God the voice actor did such a good job conveying the pure anger and sadness that Levi was feeling as he was tearing that Titan to shreds. I can’t watch that whole scene without crying.

The anime is different to the manga in many ways so while I think this fucks with Levi's character I accept that he isn't the exact same character in the anime as in the manga. I do think Levi’s motivation is supposed to have a lot more to do with a certain thug (no names, no spoilers) than this OVA lets you believe though.

He does kind of me of Eren's ambition to exterminate titans. I've forgotten how much this episode not only provides more information about Levi's backstory but Erwin's as well. We know Eren's source of motivation, so the question is, what motivates Erwin to save humanity from the titans?

Here is what Erwin said to Levi when Levi tries to kill him and Erwin is holding the blade with his bare hand: “Who was it who killed my subordinates? Killed your friends? Was it me? Or was it you? […] It’s the titans. Where did they come from? Why do they exist? Why do they kill humans? I don’t have the answers. None of us do. Limited by our ignorance, we’ll continue to be devoured by the titans! If we just stay shut behind the walls, we are never going to escape this nightmare. Take a good look around you! No matter how far you go, there aren’t any walls here. In this open space, I believe there is something there, illuminating our despair. But there are those who seek to prevent us from venturing beyond the walls. They are consumed by selfish thoughts of their own losses and gains from behind the walls where they are safe! It’s only natural. During the past 100 years, hindered by the walls, the eyes of humanity have been clouded. They cannot see the landscape that lies on the other side. But what about you, Levi? He wants to see the same light that Erwin sees at the end of the tunnel. Maybe it's an exit. Maybe it's just a blaze of harsh flames ready to incinerate them. Either way, Levi is going forward.
