I came back to rewatch this series with you guys again just cuz I wanted to rewatch AOT but also get the reactions, but Carter asked what the other guys' reactions were to that episode, and I wanted to answer with my perspective. I watch this show in dub, and the initial reveal of Reiner telling Eren that he and bertholdt were the armor and colossal is sorta in the background, moreso than in sub. Like you still hear it, but its being said at the same time as Hange is talking, and there arent any subtitles to show you exactly what they're saying, so if you arent paying attention, you don't quite get it the first time. It's insane directing and writing honestly. I mean, the entire show is, but that part is just unreal. Flabbergasted is the best way to sum up my initial reaction. Utter shock, and disbelief. When i showed this show to my friend for the first time, he reacted the same way. It does it to everyone, its so good.

Back in 2013 when Season 1 just finished, I had no patience at all so I decided to buy all the available manga volumes that were released at the time and catch up with the latest chapters. Then I had to experience true suffering by waiting monthly for new chapters AND waiting 4 YEARS for Season 2💀. Cannon and Carter are so lucky that they’re getting into AOT now because they can binge it all the way through till Season 4 Part 3 comes out. And having finished the manga, I’m super curious to see how they adapt that ending and seeing the boys’ reactions to it!

The Clash of the Titans Arc really lays the groundwork for a much grander story in Seasons 3 and 4. "Opening" and "Children" are fantastic episodes in that regard.

It’s so frustrating (in an awesome way, obviously) how bc they know so little about titans they can’t just outplay the other side (bc they totally did with Reiner here). They have to outplay them and somehow guess what the titans’ next move will be at the same time, despite having no information. I love how in this episode, Isayama uses an anime trope (one that Carter hates) but at the last second, he flips the script. You hear Eren getting all psyched up in his mind, going through his memories. You think Eren is going to find the strength to stop the Armored Titan. He stands up and goes for his attack but gets punched super hard and goes flying.

Yeah the cooking contest episode is weird, but I liked Distress. Is it considered anime original? Idk, I just enjoyed that it fleshed out some of the characters a little.

I think someone else mentioned it but I really appreciate how this episode handles rage. Eren’s three previous fights relied on brute strength and blind rage. Even his last fight with Annie, though he was relatively in control (for the first half, anyway) he still relied on rage. Here, doing so resulted in a nearly immediate loss. He only recovered the fight by thinking of his Titan form as an extension of his body, and fighting strategically. In this way, he mimicked Annie, who also fights as if she were in her normal body. This gave him an advantage over Reiner, who was worse than Annie at combat training, and relied on his brute strength in Titan form, even while having the advantage of armor.
