Attack on Titan Season 2 Review

Season 3 will start being posted this Friday! Cant wait to hear all your thoughts on our review!

Comments

well put. She's such a complex character put so early in the show that it can make some people really dislike her. Her position and feelings can't even be fully understood until you get way into Season 4

rayman

Please watch the OVA Ilse's Notebook! The usual watch order for reactors is between S2e1 and e2. It was released before S2, I think.

rac coun

Ymir is very underrated. I felt the same way, watching it for the first time, but I feel very different now.

rac coun

I think the can that Ymir reads is one of the most easily overlooked and subtle breadcrumbs in the whole show, because it's such a small detail and it's surrounded by so many other huge moments. We think about the immediate implications of what this means for Ymir, but not about the can itself. And then three people in two episodes get revealed to be titans and you never remember it again. With Ymir's struggle versus Reiner/Berthtold, I think it's easier to invest in their struggle because even though you don't know their fully story you feel like their is a lot of weight behind their choices because of the things they've committed to. With Ymir, it can feel like she is being overly wishy-washy about which side she should be on and when they trying to convince her to help them leave with Eren it again feels like she's making a dumb decision, but for her situation I think the lack of context hurts her reputation a lot more. She's saying a lot of suggestive things but there's not much to latch onto as a first time viewer unless you commit to giving her the benefit of the doubt due to her knowledge, which she then refuses to share with Eren (and by proxy you) which can really make you dislike her as an answer starved viewer.

Nick K

It definitely makes sense in context. Eren had last transformed during the fight draining his energy, and then his energy was put to work recovering his limbs afterwards, so he really had no time to actually recover his stamina since his fight with Reiner. Whereas on top of the wall with Reiner and Berthtold they had plenty of stamina and their sudden injuries from Mikasa they just used to trigger their transformations. Yes they were serious injuries, but the important thing is that they had not transformed recently, and they had not spent a lot of energy on recovering serious injuries up to that point so they had plenty of energy. After that they weren't missing that much flesh over all so it was a pretty quick recovery for them while in titan form and after reaching the forest Reiner while being fully healed had an opportunity to actually recover stamina for several hours, meanwhile Eren had a much larger amount of flesh to regenerate. Both arms versus just one hand and some deep cuts.

Nick K

i think it's harder to understand ymir and like her without understanding the show as a whole. Her face when bertholdt screams someone come find us was heartbreaking. She understands them.... and thats why she left with them.

Tresa George

I agree with you guys regarding ymir and historia, i think historia arc was by far the weakest one on the show, i dont know why, but to me she is a very boring character, maybe she has more development in the manga, but in the anime she is just a little boring compared to other arcs and characters

LePrism

Just wanted to add that the warrior episode is only ranked 11th place on IMDB there is more to come😂✌️

Isabella Manocchio

lol i know I was just kidding 😭

Bibi

damn you guys moving so quick!

lydia

Not sure if anyone else has answered your question about Eren not being able to transform to save Hannes but this quote from the wiki explains it well. "The ability to transform into a Titan can be hindered by injuries inflicted on the human body. A human can transform into a Titan with injuries as severe as a missing limb, but only if a previous transformation has not occurred recently. If a human emerges from their Titan form and receives severe injury, this person cannot transform into a Titan again until said injuries have healed."

James

Carter and Cannon wouldn’t want to watch season 4 part 2 intro. They’ve said before that if any intro has big events in it they would be mad. It’s better if they went in clueless

Kim555

No way bro asked for 12 episodes in one weekend 💀 they said they watched to 12 but Carter can’t edit 12 episodes and upload them all at once

Kim555

I see you mr. "owl" living dangerously and i love it

RoninTC

WESTBROOK TO JAZZ WTFFFFFF

Kevin

Season 3 hands down will be the season that makes your jaw drop. I rewatched S1-S2 after S3. It’s all connected. Can’t wait for you to reach THE EPISODE this season.

Julio Salazar

Just FYI you forgot to put the Attack on titan tag for ep 23 post on here

rdot

Guys… you think it’s crazy now, but it only gets CRAZIER. Hold on to your hats!

Niko

Wow, already at the halfway point. Can't wait for P2

Jeffrey

is it possible to have season 3 ep 1-12 be uploaded over the weekend I CAN'T WAIT ANYMORE 😭

Bibi

Season 3 part 1 is really good..but omg part 2 is so freaking wild I can't wait to see it again with u guys and ur reactions will be priceless

Rodrigo Figueroa

that probably explains why i was frustrated my first time watching. season 1 is obviously still great and has questions but like you said its very easy to watch it from a surface level action adventure anime. I first saw it when i was like 14-15 so i just wanted to see epic scenes of the scouts fighting titans and eren rampaging as a titan. when i saw season 2 i still approached it with that mindset and didnt understand why the story got so complicated out ofnnowhere. DEFINITELY have way more appreciation for it now especially watching it with yall and seeing first timers actually take it seriously

nomorepartiezz

6 years ago man… also congrats to Lebron hope yall get rid of westbrook today lol

nomorepartiezz

not to spoil at all but you’re officially at that point i always say the show elevates. enjoy man, yall are in for a wild ride in the next couple days. hell the next month probably.

nomorepartiezz

omg that's so far in you're like 38 episodes away from catching up. you still got 28 days to catch up before the last part streams. good luck :) and enjoy

Kim555

I love that some of the best AOT moments aren’t action scenes! The Erens monologue after finding out Reiner’s brain is a little broken is so chillin I get goose bumps every time!! Or when Armin lies to Bertholdt to get him to bring his guard down!! Love your commentary :D can’t wait for season 3!!

OrangePudding

3x12!

Studio Geck

gotta watch it then 😂

anna

i think it's better to watch s4 part 1 intro if these guys want to react blindly, part2 is more spoilery than any other aot opening, but i completely agree, the hype is unreal (my favourite op) – but also, it's not that hard to guess what will happen without seeing the op anyway

anna

Which episode are y’all on IRL?

Nash

S3 p1 opening is my favorite and doesn't have spoilers! :)

Johnathan Nilsen

This is Cannon and I agree I think that’s why I like it. A show that does that EXTREMELY well is Lost, somehow you’re emotionally invested in 20 characters 😂😂

Studio Geck

Yeah that shasha saving the girl episode sure is random, hope they don’t do random episodes like that in season 4 again ^^

lydia

For most people, season 3 part 1 is somewhat slow, but imo it was fine. You'll understand but yeah

Reckless

I have probably watched that scene from episode 6 near 50 times. And I will watch it 50 more I am sure.

7thdilemma

Watching season 2 was an overall better experience than watching the first one because I took the show more serious and spent more time theorizing, trying to put the pieces together, struggling to put together a story that makes sense. I initially thought this show was just an action-adventure show and I was just along for the ride. I didn't theorize much, I enjoyed the show as it was. I didn't realize the story was so much more complex. Season 2 just gives you so much information, but so little at the same time, because most of it doesn't make sense without the broader context. So my mind was just going is so many directions on what the story is really about, and you end up having more questions than when you started. So much mystery, so much questions. * Where did the titans from Ragako village come from? * Who is the beast titan, and what's his motive? Why does he not know what ODM gear? * Where did Ymir come from? It was 70+ years ago, but why did it look like they had military uniforms and rifles? * Why do Reiner and Bertolt want to go back to their hometown so badly? * How did Eren get the coordinate power? Why is he so special? * Why was Erwin smiling when he found out that the titans were really humans? * Who is the real enemy? Why did Ymir say that killing those two powerful titans won't change anything? I could go on and on. It's reasonable not to like Ymir while watching the show the first time. You need to be exposed to the larger context to really appreciate her character and her place in the story. It will all make so much more sense as the story progresses, and you can come back to season 2 while we say - "We told you so!".

Jeffrey

I meant part 2. The song just hits different

Ben Burke

I think they already said they won’t react to it. It’s in older comments’ replies

lydia

Do you mean season 4 part 1? (M* W** ?) cause season 4 part 2 intro is quite spoilery, it’s about R******g. If you’re talking about season 4 part 1’s intro I absolutely agree!!!! The visuals are so subtle that it’s not enough to spoil anything but the chills! Season 4’s intros songs set the mood for the episodes hyper well! Carter and Cannon should really consider watching it!

lydia

as much as I love that opening, it shows a good amount unfortunately.

farkzzy

plus its in english lol

nomorepartiezz

I know that y’all are mixed on watching the intro or not because of the spoilers, but hear me out. Like Brig has said in the past, the season 4 part 2 opening is so hype it makes me want to commit unspeakable things. You gotta watch it the first episode, it’s v v light on spoilers since with the show slowly showing it’s true colors and themes, a little visual tease isn’t enough to give anything away. The visuals in that opening, however, are absolutely CHILLING. A must watch, I gotta say. Please consider it!

Ben Burke

I'm with Cannon. One of my fav scene is when Berthold broke out the question while in Reiner's hand. It truly gives a sense of desperation on his side that is not revealed.

Gregorius

Gosh I remember when season 2 was airing.... Seems so long ago now. Can't wait to see you guys start season 3

Branflakes

Samuel is awesome!

marlassett

I think there are a couple spoilers though so i don't think they should – i feel like it's better if they react blindly without knowing what to expect of the season. I think they should skip the openings and do a separate reaction video later.

anna

Please watch the opening and ending of season 3 part 1, most of the frames are flashbacks so IMO don't count as a spoiler.

Edgardo Delgado

I think it becomes clear when you rewatch the show. When you have no idea what is going on, where she came from, who's the other side, what is her motivation, it's hard to understand her. Especially when there are all these question marks about her character while there is a very intense fight going on, it's hard to care or even try to figure it out. When you already know what's going on at the 2nd watch and you can pay attention to the details without stressing about Eren, Hannes, Armin, Erwin etc. you can kind of figure out the puzzle that is Ymir. Especially because at this point you are not as attached to neither Historia or Ymir as Mikasa, for example.

anna

i definitely agree with that – nothing gives me as much power as youseebiggirl haha

anna

What i personally liked about S2 was that it gave a lot of development to side characters. I don't see that often in shows, they generally get neglected while the focus is on the main cast. I was glad they got fleshed out a bit more – like, Historia or Ymir were irrelevant in S1 (i didn't even know Ymir's name) and I thought it would remain like that, i was surprised they became so important. Same would go to Berthold and Reiner, but i unfortunately got spoiled lol Also, when Eren broke down after Hannes' death, the voice actor Yuki Kaji gave an AMAZING performance. It's honestly gut-wrenching, i get chills every time.

anna

I'm glad you guys enjoy this season as much as s1. I was kinda nervous when u guys started s2 because for me personally s2 is somewhere in 8.5 where as the other season would easily get 9.5 or above from me. maybe bcs they gave a lot of screentime to Ymir which I personally really dislike

vjr25

If you guys want to listen to some sick Attack on Titan songs look up Samuel Kim on YouTube he makes great remixes that i listen to all the time while I work out, 10/10 would recommend.

flamehead x27

I don't know how far ahead you guys are but PLEASE do not skip the end credit scene in season 3 episode 12 ITS IMPORTANT

Merary Ponce

I understand yalls feeling about the Ymir and Christa arc (about living for yourself), but trust me it will become more important later

Caroline B.

Yall need to catch up before March 3, yall got 2 more long seasons to get through. I'm SO ready for yall to see season 3, it's about to get real juicy!

Caroline B.

Really? I watched that episode today and missed it. Djel Sannes is the one who mentions it first, right? But if I recall right there's a visual of it later on.

L.Lindberg

Seeing as some of the OST is living rent free in your head, you guys should check out the Attack on Titan suite on YouTube. It's like 18ish minutes long and goated front to back. It's all live performance and really cool to see just how incredible the composition behind the show is. Also spoiler free 'cause it's just music no images.

George

Season 3 episode 2 actually, they have seen it so in case they don’t know armins parents are the couple that used a hot air balloon to fly and try escape the walls

Sean Carroll

Yeah but in today’s day and age everyone gets offended by something so they find it hard to ignore. I’ve been deleted off two patreon previously for giving advice to the reactors

Sean Carroll

This is pretty important that they cut from anime version season 3 episode one that’s NOT a spoiler, Eren can’t talk because his Titan doesn’t have lips simple as that. Don’t know why they cut it but it’s just confirmation

Keane

i get that but the way they explains that or the way she explains herself just is very convoluted or confusing. maybe its something thats a little lost in translation, idk

nomorepartiezz

I'm conflicted with how I feel about Ymir honestly. I never found enjoyment in her character and I forgot she even existed. I understand the idea that was behind her character, but her entire ark with Historia was just way too long and drawn out. If they had shortened it, I think Ymir would've been a more likable and relatable character.

manderlee

I have to admit that I felt the same way as them. It wasn't until I re-watched the entire series and paid more attention to details that I finally understood ymir and historia's side stories, I realized then that I overlooked so many things.

tdawg

yeah, that's exactly why I said it's understandable, they didn't catch that minor detail :D

tdawg

Well even before Reiner and Bertoldt. The whole dilemma of her character arc is that she cant escape her own selflessness. We see that shes a slave to this even back to when she first learns about historia. She is constantly trying to be selfish throughout the show but cant do it, which is why she was willing to sacrifice herself for historia and why she ends up going with llllainah and berutorutoh at the end out of guilt. So you're saying she was free from when she turned back to a human until the point she met Historia? Idk if Id use that short period of time as evidience that this is "The only character in AoT thats truly free". You're basically saying, this character was a slave 90% of her life, but because of this short period of time, she is the only free character. Also If anything, given what we know of Ymir she was probably being a slave to her selflessness throughout that time period as well, we just dont get to see it

Flare

AoT music is the best workout music honestly

Evan Leary

Bro if you guys think this season is crazy wait for season's 3 and 4

Rock Drake

Don't think at titians powers as something that has strict rules. We don't know why eren wasn't able to transform on ep 12. It might be the injuries, lack of stamina , the shock of seeing that titan ecc. They are all valid reasons. Same thing on season 1 where he failed to transform on multiple occasions or he made an incomplete trasformation. Also you can be good or bad at using these powers. Annie is a clear example of someone who is really really good at using his titan. While eren barely understand his power(s).

Gianluca Angeli

Lol from the time she turns back into a human to the point of her at the castle. That time she’s free. She even says when she first saw the stars the first thing she saw was freedom. But yes she ends up going back down the path of not being free when she decides to go back with Reiner and Bertoldt. But it makes sense for her character to do that. If it wasn’t for them breaking down the wall she would never have woken up from that nightmare. And once she woke up from that nightmare to the point of probably the castle she was totally free living for herself.

Jake the Movie Geek

Lol wait what, she's not free at all. Not gonna spoil anything but she's literally a slave til the end, it's the whole point of her arc that she never learns how to be free and remains a slave to her own selflessness. She's probably one of the least free characters in the first half of the show

Flare

Agree. Plus Cannon and Carter are smart, they catch up things fairly quick. The would’ve known what’s coming if they watched that scene.

lydia

Jackson's take was pretty accurate for me at least. Upon rewatching the show I've done a complete 180 on some characters in terms of how I feel about them. That's why I try not to give too much shit to people who are watching it for the first time. It's better to be honest than fake a positive reaction to everyone anyway.

George Nedev

I know why she goes back to them but emotionally speaking I just couldn’t believe it and couldn’t get it especially she finally find the one she loves.

Miranda

Despite not caring about Historia and Ymir, the Historia first kill scene was the truly underrated scene imo. The animation was soo smooth + the music!

lydia

I mean she said it herself, she felt guilty about being granted a life, she ate one of their mates and she recognizes that this isn't her life to live, so she "gave it back" by going with them and saving them. The "power of the titans" was kind of already explained but not getting it on your first watch is more than understandable because I didn't either, but I think ymir does explain her view quite well

kiiturii

I don’t think season 4 redeemed Ymir.

lydia

I think the main part you guys didn't really get about the ymir thing is that she's not really on anyones side, she doesn't know who's side she should even be on, and that's part of her struggle. There's more context later on but if you weren't really feeling it now then you probably won't later either, maybe on a rewatch who knows

kiiturii

Yes we are going to watch all of them and rank them in the end

Studio Geck

It should be there! I’ll look right now

Studio Geck

Can we get a top 3 for part 1 and part 2 of season 3 instead of just top 3 for season 3 as whole? There are just so many things that go on in each of the parts of season 3 that I think it would be difficult to narrow it down to just season 3 lol

Bibi

Will your cousin who just went through the first season be joining the group at some point?

James

Just another day of people mispronouncing Berthold’s name 🤣

lydia

I get missing things in the heat of the moment, especially after what had just happened in the show, but it really seems like they don't pay attention at all whenever it's a ymir or historia scene. which, in turn, furthers their distaste towards their little side story. it's kinda disappointing especially when you're given a decent amount of information about why ymir and historia keep flip flopping sides from their dialogue, but it just gets talked over

Northyee

Thank you. I hope that too.

T. Law

I love the "A shield forced to be a sword, and a sword forced to be a shield" 😆. It's really fitting.

Hann Klim

About the standard of injury and transformation part, I think it’s something to do with one’s body energy level and how well-trained the person is with the titan power. I think how eren could get more energy is for example go to gym, get shredded and as Cannon said get some rest. Think about Eren, he had a massive fight with the female titan a day ago, not having enough rest, then went to the castle, and fight Reiner whereas Reiner was just playing chess, checked connie’s village and throw a titan out of the castle the day before he has to fight Eren. So I assume Eren’s energy level is so much lower than Reiner at that point which leads to Reiner can heal himself much quicker than Eren could. (+ Reiner is much more familiarized with his titan power)

lydia

Most of us viewers glossed over the nitty gritty, considering what the fuck just took place 😂

long ass username

How does it ruin anything? You realize you can just ignore comments other people make, right?

long ass username

Hope things get better for you 🫂

Hann Klim

If anything they can watch it once they finished s3? It's a cool scene(? Idk how to describe it 😂

Hann Klim

Oh boy….

James

I don't really agree to that. For me, when I first watched aot, I also had the chance to binge it and EVERYONE was tolding me to look up for this special scene. Doing it was probably the best decision in my life lol. Like this scene just brings the hype and the excitement to another level... idk just my opinion

snoobcat

My hot take on Ymir is that her character is very symbolic. I don't hate her; I actually think her character is very interesting. Someone in the comment section said that Ymir is the only character in the show that's truly free, and I agree. The whole point of her character is that she is neither good nor bad -- she only lives for herself. Nothing's black and white with her; she always makes decisions that are in her best interest, which is selfish, but isn't that how we are as humans? It wasn't until she met Historia that she found a stronger reason to live. When she discovered that Eren was the Coordinate, she realized that there was a future in the walls, so there was no need to take Historia away. Although Ymir wanted to be with her, she noticed how much Reiner and Bert were struggling. And so Ymir decided to go with them and sacrifice herself because she knew Reiner and Bertholdt couldn't go back empty-handed. She felt bad for them and simply wanted to "give back what she stole". I don't think the story behind Ymir's is boring, I just think it's really confusing at first because you want her to choose a side. But the thing is, in life, there is no good or bad. Human emotions are more complicated than that. So I think her character is really symbolic in that way.

Katrina Vieira

When I watched Season 2 I didn't like Ymir and Historia at all and don't get why they have so much screentime while I only want to see Eren fight and those 2 are still debating whether they should leave or not, but I've grown to appreciate Ymir and the screen Ymir touchs Historia when she leaves is still heartbroken and Ymir chose a road where she knows she'going to die and I still don't get it. I know she's a good person and she's the only one who can understand Reiner/Berlto situation but still, choosing a path that you know you are going to die for someone is something else.

Miranda

This is gonna be the longest week ever 😭

Joseph Vitale

There's a lot of different 'opinions' about when the titans can transform so here's the facts from AoT Wiki: ''The ability to transform into a Titan can be hindered by injuries inflicted on the human body. A human can transform into a Titan with injuries as severe as a missing limb, but only if a previous transformation has not occurred recently. If a human emerges from their Titan form and receives severe injury, this person cannot transform into a Titan again until said injuries have healed''

Mia Malvik

real

nomorepartiezz

My favorite scene in season 2 is definitely Hannes' death scene. Here we see Eren's emotional breakdown, Eren's feelings of weakness and utter hopelessness, and Mikasa's confession of feelings towards Eren while she's thinking they will probably die here. It's like the lowest of the low where all hope seems lost.

Caspar

1. Yeah, bad wording by me. I meant that she was born and lived her life in Marley. Meaning that she has some level of knowledge of how that culture operates. Which is probably not very much living in an Eldian slum. 2. I don't think that's true. The Great Titan War ended 100 years ago. Wouldn't Marley need to have some kind of Warrior inheritance system in place since that time? 3. She definitely knows she's a Titan. Once she knows that, wouldn't she infer that she somehow ate a Titan shifter? Maybe it's not until later that she realizes it was one of Marley's. 4. It's probably right that she didn't know the extent of her royal blood. But, she thought of Historia as "insurance" as some kind of bargaining chip. Why would she need a bargaining chip if she wasn't worried about someone coming to reclaim her titan?

Jag_227

To Cannon/Carter: On second thought, I think it's the right choice to skip the after-credit scene in S3 - it only has a big impact when you have to wait to see the payoff, but since you guys are essentially binging the series, you'll get to the scene quickly nonetheless. The tease only has value if you're left to stew on it for weeks, like we did when the show was being released, lol.

The Owl

I always got the feeling it sometimes functions like a fail-safe: when the body receives massive trauma, the shifter transforms so they can heal; but if they're already healing from massive injuries, their body prioritizes healing over a transformation (as Reiner/Ymir say).

The Owl

He's my personal favorite.

The Owl

I didn’t think the story behind Ymir was bad, but I agree that it wasn’t very captivating. However, there are elements in the Ymir-Historia story that will be important in season 3 and beyond.

James

Oh, and about Armin's parents: It's pretty subtle, but you find out what happened to them towards the end season 3.

L.Lindberg

So, Carter, I know why Reiner could transform though his hand was cut off when Eren couldn't because hes still healing, but I won't tell you. You'll see, trust me. In regards to Ymir and Historia, I didn't care at all about them the first times I watched the show, but I've had years to digest and I feel the manga shows them in a better way, but either way it's fine not to vibe with a character. Ymir and Historia share an experience of outside pressure from the world to deny themselves and sacrifice everything including their identities, if that's not something you connect with I don't think you'll feel for them, and that's a-ok. Cannon, I love Reiner too. Second favorite character throughout, my favorite character appears in season 3.

L.Lindberg

33:00 the Ymir & Historia plotline interferes with the pacing of other plotlines in this season, I'd agree. There will be more context in the future that makes the viewer appreciate it in hindsight, but in the moment, you guys are right that it feels slow/out-of-pace/or just not as interesting as other things going on. It's a fair criticism. It's an inconsistency with the stakes between the fate of humanity and other main characters' lives versus a character moment between Ymir & Historia who aren't as important to the viewer compared to Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Erwin, Hannes, etc. All shall be answered, and all will make sense, however. People are gonna differ with which characters they relate to/enjoy. Keep being honest and authentic with your thoughts, feelings, and reactions to the story, writing, etc. - that's what we're here for.

The Owl

It's totally fine not liking a character, even though they might be well written. I personally really like Ymir and find her actions to be understandable, so I'm gonna "defend" her and give my character analysis of her from season 1-2 (no spoilers for later seasons): From what we know, she was an orphan from a town beyond Wall Maria. She got "adopted" by a cult/church/whatever, was given the name Ymir and was worshipped as a goddess or royalty of some sorts. Ymir and the rest of her followers got taken by soldiers and turned into titans. She roamed as a titan for 60 years until she ate Marcel (Reiner and Bertholt's friend), which made her turn back into a human. From that point, it seems that she made it inside the walls and became a thief in order to survive. When trying to steal stuff from a church in the Interior, she overheard some priests talking about Historia and decided to find her by joining the Cadet Corps. I think the reason why Ymir acts the way she does is that she never had any normal relationship in her life, she was more or less alone for 75+ years. Ymir lived only for herself at that point in time. I imagine there was never anyone she could really trust or relate to, until she met Historia. That's why she comes off as apathetic to most people, which is more or less true. She probably could care less about the rest of the world, as long as she can stay with Historia. She would do anything to keep her safe. Which is why she agreed to join Reiner and Bertholt in the forest, she believed that Historia would be safer with them. The reason why she changed her mind in the end is for a few reasons: 1. She saw Eren use the power of the Coordinate, which made her belive there is a future for Historia inside the walls 2. Ymir could relate to Bertholt and Reiner's situation as well and wanted to keep her word to them after they let her capture Historia 3. She feels both guilty and thankful for having eaten Marcel, their friend. She probably wanted to pay them back for the years she got after having been a mindless titan for 60 years

Markus

MASSIVE SPOILERS BELOW DONT READ CARTER OR CANNON Great comment , however i will give a few corrections. 1. Ymir isnt marleyan, she is eldian born in marley 2. the warrior program was not a thing when ymir was living in marley, it only became a thing when grisha was a restorationist and zeke was a child. Remember ymir is over 60 years old technically 3. Ymir couldnt have known she ate a warrior or someone at all when she is reborn as she asks bertholdt on the tree how it all works. So also wouldnt know she would eventually need to be brought back to marley. 4. I also doubt Ymir knows the extent to Historias royal lineage, it is definitely unknown on our end what she heard from the priests to the extent you are assuming. And I seriously doubt she understand how important royal blood is in regard to breeding future titan shifters.

Sean Carroll

also shoutout cannon for the reiner love. definitely one of the best characters in the show even after becoming the antagonist

nomorepartiezz

guys please u gotta do a reaction video on YOUSEEBIGGIRL live performance!!! mostly it's music producer who react to this so their reaction video mostly is based on their admiration of the musicial composition. It would be fun to watch u guys react to this bcs ur reaction wouldn't be of a musical analysis but from an AOT watcher standpoint

vjr25

LETS. GO. I cannot wait.

The Owl

Ymir is Marleyan. So, she knows about Marley's military strength. She knows about the Warriors society. As a child, she was groomed to be this religious figurehead of some Restorationist movement. After Marley found them out, Ymir accepted the blame in place of all those adults who were truly responsible. For this, she was made into a Titan and kicked off the wall to be left on Paradis island forever. She starts to get buried in the dirt because she isn't moving at all. Unknowingly, the Warriors en route to the walls to carry out their mission, stop to rest at her location. Miraculously, she awakens now and eats one of these Warriors. A short time later, she awakens, reborn as a human. I assume she eventually realizes that she must have eaten a Warrior from Marley, and knows that they will one day return searching for their lost weapon. In the interior of the walls, Ymir overhears information about Historia, a bastard of royal blood that is being sent to the scouts. She joins the Scouts in order to get close to Historia. So that, when Marley comes to reclaim their Titan, Ymir can use Historia as a bargaining chip so that Ymir can attempt to not be eaten by one of Marley's own warriors. However, upon spending time trying to get close to Historia, she sees that Historia is making many of the same mistakes that Ymir made in the past. Trying to be liked by others. Trying to be a good person to please others. Trying to be a hero and sacrifice yourself to benefit others. Ymir's life was ruined by trying to achieve these things. But, by some miracle, she was reborn, and given a chance to live free from being a slave to those motivations. She routinely tries to guide Historia to the same realization so that Historia can live for herself and not be a sacrifice for other's benefit. Now Ymir and everyone is trapped on the tower as hundreds of Titans are coming to kill them. She decides to reveal her power and fight this horde of Titans. She could have turned and ran away, leaving everyone to die. But, she fought to try to save Historia and everyone. Despite trying to "live for herself", she is still a good-hearted person that isn't going to abandon Historia and her "friends" to die. She nearly dies in this moment. Reiner and Bertolt see that they have found the one that ate Marcel all those years ago. Now, they're thinking, "We have the Jaw Titan and Eren, another Titan shifter, so let's just take them both now and run for Marley. We can finally go home." (They don't know at this point that he is both the Attack AND the FT/Coordinate) After 2x6, Ymir wakes up seeing that Reiner and Bertolt are, in reality, Marleyean warriors. She knows that they must want to reclaim their Titan weapon from her by bringing her back to Marley. Reiner makes a sales pitch to Ymir. He points out that she knows how powerful Marley's military is. She knows that Marley can wipe out this group of people easily. So, he offers Ymir that she return to Marley with them. Reiner and Bert claim they will vouch for Ymir, trying to convince Marley to let her live. Maybe telling them that Ymir will be useful to recover Historia at a later time. Reiner is not guaranteeing, but he's saying there's a chance that Marley will allow her to live because of this. As they're escaping the approaching Scouts, Ymir realizes Historia must be with them, and demands that Reiner and Bert stop to retrieve her. They say it's too risky, but Ymir threatens them. Ymir believes that delivering Historia to Marley will give her a future. She believes that there is no hope for Eldians on Paradis island to fight against Marley. Marley will be happy to get a person of royal blood to breed. Historia will be bred like an animal, but she will be alive and have a future. They recover Historia and continue trying to escape to Marley. In the finale, it is revealed that Eren is the Coordinate. Reiner, Bert, Ymir did not know this. Ymir knows that this power, in the hands of someone like Eren, gives the people of this island a chance at survival against Marley's overwhelming military power. She says, "This means, even in the walls, there is a future." Knowing this, she no longer intends to bring Historia to Marley to be bred like an animal. She leaves her behind on the island in the hope that Paradis will prevail against Marley in it's future battles- allowing Historia to have a future. Ymir chooses not to stay behind with Historia. She chooses to help Reiner and Bertolt survive this mayhem and return with them to Marley. Now, she no longer has Historia as a bargaining chip, and upon returning to Marley, she will almost certainly be killed. Then, atop the wall Reiner asks why she would do this. Ymir says she is lucky Reiner's group came to attack the walls that day - giving her the miracle that gave her a second chance at life. She knows Reiner and Bertolt are fucked. They came here on a mission and lost 2 titans, and couldn't capture the FT. They will be killed upon returning to Marley. Ymir agrees to be their prize to bring home "Yeah, we royally fucked up the mission, but look, we got the jaw Titan back!" This spares Reiner and Bert from being replaced by other warriors and killed. Ymir chose to give her life to save them. Doing the same thing she did as a child, but no longer because she is naïve and wanting to please others. But, because she is a good-hearted person that wants to help Reiner and Bertolt by returning what she stole. She got to have her second chance at life, and now accepts her own death. That's my take on Ymir's character with full context of the show. She is a character I have grown to love very much.

Jag_227

Ymir is definitely my least favorite character. Yet, how I’ve always said, every character plays a part. But I’m so stoked for season 3!!!! Letssss goo🔥

*NO SPOILERS* 11:10 Regarding Eren being unable to transform at the end of S2 - Remember what Erwin says when they faced the Female Titan the first time: the Scouts were foolish to think Eren "set the standard" on Titan powers. Healing is definitely a part of it, as Ymir & Reiner explain to Eren, but the fact we see Berthold & Reiner transform when they were injured proves that there are apparent levels of expertise in controlling Titan powers. Mikasa slashed Berthold's throat & Reiner lost his hand, for God's sake, but it didn't matter one bit. Eren transformed the first time while missing an arm and a leg - so we know the extent of the injury might have something to do with it, too. I think this is a subtle way that the author reminds the viewer that although Eren can do all these amazing things, he's not necessarily GOOD at any of them (which is like... perfect characterization). This is a huge theme for Eren's character up to this point - he is a REACTIVE character who struggles or is hindered from making an impact on the world around him to save those he loves (aka a PROACTIVE character). On this note, my question to Cannon & Carter is, if Eren is a REACTIVE character, who is Eren's foil (opposite), at this point? Someone who DOES impact the world around them (for good or bad), whether they want to or not? A shield forced to be a sword, and a sword forced to be a shield. Not a trick question or spoiler, I'm referring to only what we've seen up to the end of S2.

The Owl

MASSIVE SPOILERS below, massive rant DO NOT READ REPLIES (This is for Mckay, Brig, and Jackson, and everyone else) You asked, so I'm going to give my perspective on Ymir, but it's impossible to do without massive spoilers haha. That's the nature of how this series is written.

Jag_227

and yea ive commented it before but dont feel bad for not liking ymir. you’re not supposed to understand her yet. everyone is confused and frustrated by her during this season on first watch i remember feeling the same. hell even after understanding her later on she can still be a polarizing character obviously as seen with Brig lmao

glad to see how much you guys loved the reveal in S2E6. I think it’s universally agreed upon as one of the best anime scenes ever and for good reason. now you know why we hyped it up so much. i think the show gets a lot better from here but in terms of individual scenes i still find myself going back and watching that more than anything. theres lots of scenes that might have a better reveal, or ones that are more emotional, ones that are more hype or have fire animation. but that scene has all of it. its just 2-3 minutes of absolute perfection and demonstrates why anime can be so engaging. and yes the music is so incredible, thats just the cherry on top for attack on titan in general. i genuinely dont even know what genre to call the music in this show but its always so good

nomorepartiezz

That's the right decision, the reaction to it and everything that follows will be completely fresh and undoubtedly one of the best moments.

BDR

When I first watched, I agreed with your guys' opinions on Ymir. But on a rewatch it made way more sense. You guys seemed to miss the part where Ymir literally ate Reiner/Bertholdt's friend, which she says "saved" her from a nightmare. Her going back to help them was to repay the debt she owed to them. I think you guys naturally are against her because she's the "mean girl." But it should be clear now that she's not a bad person. You also missed the part of dialogue where Ymir says that because Eren is the coordinate, Historia might have a future in the walls, thus having her think she will be okay if she leaves. Those 2 things are the reasons why she flip flopped her actions. I suggest rewatching to read the dialogue again from the last couple episodes.

BDR

Characters Reiner Despite not knowing much about him, Reiner is still such a complex character in this season. Dealing with the shock of finding out he's the Armored Titan. Then, finding out he has a split personality and has been dealing with overwhelming guilt, yet still moving forward with whatever obligations he thinks he must perform. Such brilliant character writing. Mikasa I thought she had a lot of memorable scenes in this season. Attacking Reiner and Bertolt on top of the wall, but being unable to bring herself to do it with the intent to kill. Dealing with the aftermath of Eren being kidnapped and being heartbroken that she might not be with him anymore. Confronting Ymir and Historia saying "You're mistaken to seek compassion from me. There's only so many lives that I can care about." Gives me chills every time. The scene with Eren after Hannes' death was so sweet. Ymir With hindsight, Ymir becomes one of the most interesting characters imo. It's kind of impossible to understand her at this point. I have so much love for Ymir after understanding the context of these events.

Jag_227

The Warrior scene is #1 for me as well. I never imagined it was Reiner and Bertolt. I thought it was brilliant the way it was revealed so casually. Reiner's monologue before turning is so interesting. Another memorable scene is Eren waking up to Reiner and Bertolt standing on the branches. Then, that whole interaction between the four of them is so good. It introduces so many new questions and half-answers. And you see how much Reiner and Bertolt's actions weigh on their minds. "Reiner, you're not a soldier. You and I...we're warriors." Love that line. The scene of the 104th confronting Bertolt on top of Reiner is so emotional. I love that nothing is black/white in this show. "There is no future in which humanity can inhabit these lands without Eren." And then Erwin gets his arm bitten off and he's like "Forget about me. Eren is just ahead. Keep going!" So badass. Hannes' death was so intense. The voice acting performance by Eren (Yuki Kaji) gets me emotional every time. The Mikasa and Eren scene that follows is so beautiful.

Jag_227

Are you guys going to react to the opening ?

Fatema alrowaiei

did something happen to the “no regret part 2?” i can’t find it anywhere.

Jack

Wheres aot in 9 minutes?

Matt T

Cannon saying he likes Reiner really takes me back when I watched this the first time. I couldnt believe he is one of the bad guys. Calling him the villain though .... :D cant wait for more.

Neltran

So about the transforming while healing : you're only unable to transform if you're hurt and if you've recently already transformed once. Reiner and Bert hadn't transformed before so they could still do it. But Eren in the Scream episode had already turned to fight Reiner before that so he was unable to, and because his fingers were missing. So it is an energy thing

Mia Malvik

In the last episode when Ymir discovered Eren possessed the Coordinate she thought to herself, "So that's why reiner and bertolt wanted eren. I guess there's a future in the walls after all." I noticed you guys didn't really pay attention to that minor detail because you guys, we're shocked that eren had just controlled a titan. Haha that's understandable. I'd be shocked to. With that thought in the back of her mind, as she was about to retreat she saw that Reiner and bertholdt struggling. So, she leaves christa behind because well there's a future in the walls. She felt sympathy towards reiner and bertolt since she's the only one that understood their position, and she felt like she owed them for bringing her back to life and allowing her to start a new life.

tdawg

Hard agree on the soundtracks hahah, the one playing in the warrior episode is YouSeeBigGirl and Vogel I'm Kafig is in season 1 with Carla being eaten, and basically all the times eren transforms. They're quite easy to mix up

Mia Malvik

I think to add to this, there is also a factor of endurance to transform multiple times, it takes allot for your body to undergo these transformations its also why you dont have to be severely injured to do it. Like Eren getting a nose bleed in S1 after transforming 2 times close to each other.

sesaka

And I totally hate him lol but that’s the thing. It’s all about different opinions. And I’m fine that they don’t like Ymir or Historia (I’m hopeful they’ll like Historia more in season 3). At the start of all of this I actually really liked Cannon’s hot take of hating Levi because that’s just such a rare opinion lol

Jake the Movie Geek

I like the red haired guy........

Sean Carroll

But we’ll get there. I appreciate the raw reactions and can’t wait for you to watch all the way through!

C E.

I totally agree with you. Lol I mean I’m someone who likes a popular hated character in season 4. But I still stand by that I think this character is extremely well written. Though it seems most of the fanbase just hates said character.

Jake the Movie Geek

Loved the review! Didn’t get the Ymir-Historia scenes in the middle of all other things happening the first time I watched this either especially since I was feeling a lot of frustrations w/ those info I don’t and can’t understand at that time.

C E.

To clarify the conditions of turning into a titan: The person must initially be fully healed, then they must cause an injury while having a goal in their mind. The person is unable to transform into a titan if they are pulled out of their titan form by an injury. Their bodies prioritizes fully healing their bodies before returning the ability to turn into a titan. Back in season 1, Annie didn't call the titans to set her free when she was trapped in the forest but as a "smoke screen" so she can slip out of her titan form without being spotted. She could've had an injury when slipping out but there was a good amount of time between her transformations. She did kill one of Levi's underlings in her human form first. It is 100% possible for someone to turn into a titan multiple times in a short amount of time, as long as their main body doesn't experience an injury while in their titan form before being ejected out.

Alex Ramirez

Respect for holding your opinions. Viewers of this show are very divided on who they like and it will get worse as you go through the show. This is kind of a warning that viewers will try really hard to defend a character and that really ruins the part of the show for me. I hope you guys keep watching the show and give your unfiltered opinions on the story and the characters. Nothing is worse then people telling you what YOU should like. Enjoy season 3 it's going to be a blast!

Clown

I enjoy your thoughts and opinions of aot, very refreshing since I rewatched it alot, so to see you guys experience it for the first time is nice! (also after s3, I'd like your guys opinion on which season was your favorite before jumping into s4? like a tier list i guess..)

Kyra Sun

Yeah the kid. I can easily defend why I like that character but I can’t due to spoilers. So I’m trying to be super vague

Jake the Movie Geek

A hated character in Season 4? No spoiler but is it the kid? From what I remember people hated her for some reason. I mean Cannon was direct about his dislike toward Levi and Levi is my favorite character in AOT LOL. I respect people who form their own opinions and don't get easily swayed by the majority's preference, as long as they can defend their opinions with reasons, whether or not I agree with them.

Jay J.

The Gek Boys: Gives Season 1 and 2 scores of high 9s Me: Gave Season 1 an 8.5 and Season 2 an 8.8 after my first time watching😐 But I appreciate how clear and honest you all are with your opinions, especially when critiquing the show from a critical and enjoyment standpoint!

Justin Callang

Just keeps getting better and better with each season.

matt

I totally agree on your decision. I mean if you guys are so focused on avoiding spoilers that you’re not even watching the intros then definitely don’t watch that post credit scene

Jake the Movie Geek

Yeah I mean I can’t really talk because a hated character in Season 4 is a character that I love. I’m all for different opinions

Jake the Movie Geek

The only non spoiler thing I can say about Ymir why I like her is because she’s like the only character in AoT that’s truly free. I’m fine with your guys opinions. I’m sure most of us are. That’s why we signed up for patreon to get your full uncut takes. I think you guys will like Historia more in season 3. She’s one of the main characters for the first half. Just a suggestion for patreon is to upload one video every Monday-Friday. So theoretically if you were to do that you would upload S3E1 on the 13th. That way the uploads are consistent and we also don’t have to wait as long for the next upload.

Jake the Movie Geek

"Defend Ymir with your life" I'm defending her with my life since I'm sick and still here commenting. The reason why Ymir did that will be revealed in S4 but you have to connect it by yourself. If I'm still around I'll explain it to you.

T. Law

I'm glad you guys have your own opinions about the characters regardless what people say. The whole thing about ymir and historia this season didn't do it for me either. Maybe because previously there were not many scenes of those two characters and I guess I just didn't get to be emotionally invested in their story, so when they showed it this season (alongside other important shocking scenes) I didn't care about it. Plus I agree with you guys about ymir's motivation. Even after watching AOT so many times (yes) and reading the manga, I still find their scenes in this season a bit tedious. Tho Historia 'redeemed' herself as a character to me in season 3.

Jay J.

Some of my comments for the season: For me season 2 is far better then season 1, ive said before I didnt get hooked on the show until the female titan arc so season 1 feels slow to me at some points but I definitely appreciate it. What I love about season 2 is that we get a core group of characters we focus on including characters who werent prominent in season 1 (mainly 104th cadets). Season 2 has a constant feeling of an invisible disturbance which keeps you tense. In regards to characters, Reiner, Ymir and Bertholdt are the standouts for me. I will also say to the guys who have seen the show that if Ymir wasnt there in critical moments like saving everyone at the castle or saving Reiner and Bertholdt then some of the most critical future scenes would have been impossible. Ymir did some incredibly important actions this season. Also she doesnt just leave for a random reason, when eren uses the coordiante she recognises that this is the reason Reiner wants him and while thinking that she looks at Historia and realises that maybe the people in the walls have a future after all. She was originally trying to bring Historia with her because she understands the state of the world and doesnt see the walls as a safe place to be for the future but after erens power is revealed her mindset is changed and she finally makes the hard decision to sacrifice her love for Historia by letting her be safe inside the walls (ymir is in love with Historia in case you werent 100 % sure), she also understands the situation riener and bertholdt are in so decided to give herself up as paying them back for when she stole MArcels power 5 years ago. I dont have an issue with any of you disliking her but I just want you all to understand her character as fully as possible (as of now) and make a decision because you all still seemed confused about particular dialogue or actions which I hope this comment clarified. She is extremely selfless in reality even if her actions dont always look liek that, the backstory was supposed to make that clear despite the insanity and confusion of her backstory.

Sean Carroll

They don't need to see the after credit teaser for s3e12. They can just keep watching since they don't have to wait. The teaser is just a good even if you watch it after imo

T

Agreed.

Joshua Weathers

it definitely worked better as a preview for something that is about half a year away to keep you intrigued. I think while binge watching it definitely becomes a spoiler, because you can deduce certain outcomes based on that scene not having happened yet.

Zain Ali

Just to clarify if the titan shifter is already in the healing process like eren´s fingers he can´t transform but if he has a previous wound like reiner´s arm he can transform

Chaffi

Yea I see where your coming from, I never picked it up. I was just so intrigued on what would happen lol.

Joshua Weathers

it's a spoiler if you break it down and watch frame by frame

Paul

I have seen many reactors who could predict what is going to happen while watching part 2 of S3 because they saw it. The scene is not a spoiler at first sight, but as you go through part 2 u'd be able to guess even when it still did not happen. So I do recommend not watching it.

Saeed

Nah ymir isnt my fav! but after seeing the show you would understand her character more… Just trust the process and believe me AOT doesnt show random scene for nothing 🫣

Fatema alrowaiei

That's totally fair, at the end of the day it's just a little post credit scene that happens in the show later on so it's no biggie. Can't WAIT for your guys live reaction to all of it!

Joshua Weathers

Ya a lot of people are really split on it. As much as I would love to watch it I think we are going to just wait to see it whenever it happens live in the episode later on. We just don’t love seeing stuff that’s going to happen later and prefer to have it just happen.

Studio Geck

We know it’s not necessarily a spoiler, but we just hate hints about things to come and like to see it live. I know they put it there for a reason and to let people think about it but we just prefer to wait :)

Studio Geck

For sure dudes, fair enough!

Flare

I think we are going to skip it, just because we want to wait for the scene to be brand new

Studio Geck

I really recommend you guys see the post credit scene at the end of s3 ep12, some people say it's a spoiler, but if you haven't seen the show then you don't know what's exactly happening in the scene, so I would recommend it plus it just gets you super hyped for s3 part 2, which is the best section of the series imo.

Joshua Weathers

so stoked for season 3!!

foxx

Hell yeah, been looking forward to this. Have you guys decided whether or not you are going to watch the post credit scene at the end of s3e12? Some people have been saying not to watch it but imo it's absolutely meant to be watched. I think people are getting a little too protective over spoilers and are forgetting what a spoiler actually is. The way they do that teaser too is so unique too, it's a standout moment of the entire show. Cool with whatever you guys decide though

Flare

man i’m really glad you guys are enjoying the show so much. also listening to the ost is so relatable 😂

Dony29

Oh yey! New upload.

Hannahbelle

So hyped. You guys are going to lose it season 3!
