very late to the party but crab :) this is my first comment but I am on my second time through watching all your AOT videos (and have been watching your other videos too) and it's been incredibly meaningful to see; I have been absolutely obsessed with AOT these last few months since I watched the whole show on my own in one go and have been processing and considering (and watching reviews and analysis and re-watching parts); seeing you all deeply connect with and consider these characters, themes and this world which has consumed me means so much, thank you guys so much <3

catching up to all ur AOT reaction videos is soooo much fun! 😎❤️and I’m IN LOVE WITH UR SEASON REVIEWS! they are so entertaining, also I’m very happy that this was filled like FILLED with Erwin praise and love. the way i relate to Cannon and Carter this season. “everytime someone mentions Erwin it feels like a punch in my gut” *sigh* me to this day 😔 oh and the detailed characters/scenes/etc analyses are great! Especially about Erwin’s character, I’M LIVING FOR IT! but also wanna say that Levi is to me actually a very intriguing character, and ig more deep? than he sometimes is perceived to be, you can see he truly cares, he’s just not very “showy” with his feelings (unless its anger lol) and how often he mentions that he hates pointless deaths, how he threatens to break erwin’s legs bc he obviously doesn’t want him to die and yet doesn’t outright says “stay because i don’t want you to die”, lmao imagine your bestie threatening to dismember you everytime you’re about to do something reckless, very cute type of love language, so here for it🥺 floch also mentions that both Eren AND Levi brought their emotions into the whole who should get the serum thing, and he wasn’t wrong, Levi wanted Erwin to rest, he didn’t want Erwin to be brought back to this hell even though the most logical decision would be to chose the commander. anywaysss yeah always love hearing your point of view and thoughts! thank you for making reaction videos❤️‍🔥🔥

In the manga, Levi stabs Zeke in the mouth and pushes his sword inside through one of his eyes. The anime censored it, though just before the scene cuts, you can see his sword coming out from Zeke’s eye… that was brutal!

The hardening isn't all the same. That's the simplest explanation. The crystals in the caverns are self illuminating and softer than any other hardening, that we've seen Here are some differences between titan shifters: -Annie's hardening is see-through when she isn't in the titan -Reiner has yellowish permanent armour and a little bit of extra hardening for climbing -Annie can use her hardening basically at will, anywhere on her body -Eren can make structures with his hardening and it's destructible with the swords -Annie's hardening can not be destroyed with swords -Reiner's permanent hardening can't be destroyed with swords -Zeke can harden in his human form neck while in titan form

i actually think they would love some of the early arcs.... zabuza arc and chunin exams arc. those arcs even have some really dark scenes. plus the naruto power system isnt the typical linear scaling like dbz where more push ups and more gravity = MORE POWER and even more push ups and even more gravity trainuing =EVEN MORE POWER indefinitely until the universe cant contain em lol. some naruto fights have erwin smith level strategy

I'm glad Jack also picked up on what I mentioned on 3x17. Armin instantly and without hesitation threw away his dream and his life to defeat the Colossal Titan. That takes some huge courage, too, and I'm glad to see one of them acknowledge it because it is highly underrated. For Erwin, Levi had to make the choice, he even tells him he's making the choice for him because he can tell that Erwin doesn't have the full strength to give up his dream and do what he needs to do as commander. There's nuance to what Armin and Erwin both had to do that makes this not a 1:1 comparison, but it shouldn't be hard to acknowledge Armin's immense bravery to do all of this in the span of minutes: understand his life means winning, lying to his friends, lying to Eren, keeping a poker face, facing the Colossal on his own, having his skin sloughed off from heat (you know how painful that had to have been? That was a slow death), and giving up everything you want in your young life in an instant without anyone needing to say "I'm making the choice for you, Armin."

It was explained in S3 Part 2 that the reason for the 13 years is because Ymir herself lived 13 years as a Titan. Hence "The Curse of Ymir".

the problem is that it's literally just to let them get away with blowing half of Reiner's head off in the next episode. we see it for two scenes and then never again. it just... exists in those 2 or 3 episodes and that's it. With other sudden titan abilities, we either see them used more and more (eren and hardening, or Bert and steam) or at least mentioned (female titan's scream). Bertholt knows about the armor's ability, so I'd assume the military does as well, but it's never used or brought up in the entirety of S4

My hot take is in S3P1 they added tranquilizer darts which weren’t part of the manga. Technically it’s a bit story breaking because whenever they need to subdue a Titan Shifter before they transform, they can just put them to sleep. They were able to create Thunderspears from the government tech yet couldn’t find their supply of sleep darts 🤣 it would’ve come in real handy during the rest of the series but oh well

It was easily avoidable too. Just have Reiner dodge Levi split second so the sword doesn’t get a clean pierce, or have him harden his neck like Zeke did in his human form before Levi assblasted him. I guess those options don’t have the same “epic” impact as Reiner surviving a sword through the neck though.

Also, if I have to explain about why do titan shifter has to die after a certain years, I would say if titans with powers don’t die at all than it’s just too OP. They can heal themselves and strong power, hardening, etc without taking a toll on their body just sounds unrealistic. Dumb titans are just dumb so I think it make sense they can live on forever cause they got no powers.

Kenny is Levi’s foil character and adds a lot of depth to their background, in the same manner Reiner is Eren’s. That, plus the fact that he’s the first to bring up the existential question about using the Titan spinal injection to preserve someone’s life, is why I think there’s so much hype around Kenny. Plus he’s just badass and brings in some of the best combat scenes in entire series.

So this is not a spoiler but I just wanna say that the writer is so genius that he manage to end the manga at 139 where 1+3+9=13. Also representing the 13 years life span and the 9 power of titans. Not saying that this explains cannon’s question of why it has to be 13 years but not longer or shorter, but I think it’s a smart decision of the writer. He definitely planned things out and decided 13 years is most suitable for the story

I agree a 100%...the sub for Erwin is so much better, and as you rightly pointed out, the dub to me feels like the VAs are reading lines albeit dramatically. Also, Erwin's lines in the sub are more in line with the manga which is the source material. I do not like the changes they make in the dub, though I understand that they have to do so due to translation. I did not like the dub as much as the sub. The sub has always been far superior than the dub in my opinion. Also, how can one forget Jotaro and Dio face off 😂😂

Little things can break suspension of disbelief, and in a show like Attack on Titan where I give it so much credit for the incredible small details, I’m also going to critique small details as well. Not sure if you touch on it in the season review since I’ve been catching up slowly, but I’d like to clarify about Erwin and Erwin’s dad. In the scenes where the torturer is describing people whom he tortured for trying to learn the truth, Erwin’s dad is among them. He’s the teacher killed by the Internal Police, and it’s directly implied that Erwin was aware of who killed his father and how he was killed because he stops talking about his dream immediately afterwards.

I just can’t back Briggs opinion of Erwin’s Charge in Eng. Dub being better… 😭😭it lacks so much of something I can’t figure what it is, but its like you can just tell the VAs are reading lines. The VA for Erwin is just difficult for me to grasp too. Erwin is this pretty stoic guy, quiet, and not very forthcoming with everything he thinks. But then it’s in moments where his arm is bitten off or his charge that you see the quiet resolve go away and this internal rage comes out in full effect. We have seen it with the mission to capture Female Titan. But, he does hesitate if it means certain death for him. Armin treats all lives the same if not more than his. Loved the talk about Erwin's speech. With the switch inside him to be able to abandon his dream for the sake of humanity. To honor the fallen soldiers he feels so much guilt for. Erwin calls himself a "conman" telling lies to convince people to die. And has always had the selfish desire to his actions. He has this internal conflict of "Am I doing what's best for me, or what's truly best for humanity's future?". But, that final speech Erwin realizes he is not lying. He believes every word of that speech and always has. It's just, this moment is when he himself fully commits to that through the sacrifice of his own dream. This moment is when he believed his own words and gave the most inspiring speech ever.

I'll toss in some scenes that are slept on because of more iconic scenes when making a "Top 3" list. -Learning that Eren ate his Dad. Where has the mysterious Dr. Jaeger been this whole time?! WHAT!? That realization is such a turning point in the show's direction. -Carla reassuring Eren and inspiring his confidence from beyond the grave. "It doesn't matter if he's special. Look at him, he's so cute. He's already special because he was born into this world." Just such a beautiful and touching thing. -Kenny's entrance on the rooftop in episode one. That really shook me on my first time through the show. Something about the weightiness and firepower he wields was so intimidating. I was genuinely scared of this guy. -"Give up on your dream and die" - Levi. Something about the bluntness of those words is so impactful. That's the moment it really sinks in that Erwin is about to die.

Levi vs Beast is a masterpiece. I think, the best scene I have ever seen. Levi only has a chance at winning because he catches him by surprise to get close. Then, he uses merciless precision and calculated deception to win. First, he takes off the arm the Beast attacked him with. Gets behind him. Pretends to go for the nape. The Beast takes the bait, leaving his eyes unguarded - Levi's true target. Then, as the Beast is in shock he lost his eyes, Levi immediately cuts both his achilles. The show set up these titan weak points throughout the show, and then this scene pays it off by Levi taking advantage of all of them to win vs the powerful Beast Titan. I love how fast the scene happens. There's no wasted movement. No wasted opportunity. No hesitation by Levi. It's now or never. And, the violence of stabbing him in the mouth when he cuts him out is undeniably satisfying.

I felt vindicated when you guys mentioned your hot takes. 1) I agree with Jackson that Armin was the better choice. I guess it depends on how you define “better choice”. On my initial watch, I chose Erwin. But having rewatched this, and thought about more than just “what’s better for humanity?”, I chose Armin. 2) I thought Kenny was so out of place when he was introduced. He felt like a last minute addition to the plot. His character and entrance would’ve been epic if his existence was foreshadowed in previous seasons. That being said, his death speech is one of my favourite quotes of this show because of how relevant it is to the overall story. 3) The way Historia was able to locate Rod Reiss’ nape, destroy it, land safely, immediately gain the public’s favour will always be the most ridiculous sequence of events in this show and I cannot accept this as a “hot take”.

About the hardening in the crystal cave not being as hard as annie's shell, I think this was explained during Eren's training with Hange. If Eren focuses the hardening on a smaller area, like his knuckles, it becomes harder compared to when he spreads it out his whole body.

Definitely agree with this, Kenny’s entrance while it is out of nowhere and I do get their grievances with it, I can ignore for the most part for his awesome character motivation and what he brings to the show altogether (without him it, ep.18 “midnight sun” probably wouldn’t be a masterful episode without his last actions/words to Levi) his character is the example of flipping the stereotypical character motivation of wanting for power bc it’s power, but instead he wanted to be compassionate and not a shitty human being bc he saw the most powerful person (in his eyes) be compassionate (eg. Uri Reiss). I do agree that his last message, “everyone was the same…everyone was a slave to something” is the thesis of the show. I think the more they’ll watch, the better appreciation they will be to Kenny as a character… or maybe not… 😅

Andor is a great show overall. It just so happens to be set in the Star Wars universe. It can take a while to get into the show because it's slow in the beginning, which can turn people off. It's definitely worth watching all the way through. The payoff is worth it. It's way better than the Kenobi or Boba Fett show. It can be slow, so you can think of it as two 3-episode arcs, followed by 1 breather episode, then a 2-part season finale. Sucks that the show didn't get have a lot of viewers compared to the other Star Wars show or HoTD or Rings of Power.

Personally, I think the only thing that held me back from being totally satisfied with Armin's "death," is that - even though it's an amazing scene - I think Erwin, as a character, gets more closure from his death. Armin constantly struggles with this idea that he's expendable, and that his life isn't worth anything, and while he's dying he says "This is all I have to give," as if, still, he doesn't quite see the value he brings to everyone around him. Erwin, at least, was able to let go of his dream and the burden of being commander, and also resolve some of his guilt at sacrificing people for his own gain. He also seemed to be getting more and more tired and conflicted as the story went on, and his smile and "thank you" to Levi made it clear that he was almost a bit relieved at his own death. But whether it was actually better for humanity, who knows lol. I don't think anyone will know for sure until the whole thing finishes

Also, as for the pacing issues in the beginning, I totally agree. Part of the problem is that, generally, the pacing in the show is usually between 1-2 chapters per episode, and in that section they jump through a whole volume in an episode in some cases. I think they wanted to start the season with a bang, and the beginning of the manga section is a little slower (they spend some time building into the intrigue, discussing why they have to start focusing on the problems within the walls, as well as spending more time on titan experiments), which I get, but I think that definitely added to the feeling that there was no transition out of the last season.

I thought when Historia was calling herself an enemy of humanity, she was referring to the fact that because she has royal blood, she should do the right thing and eat Eren. By eating Eren, she would access the founding titan's powers and "save humanity". However, she chose to save Eren and that's why I think she was calling herself an enemy to humanity, because instead of "saving" humanity she was choosing to save Eren.

A late crab for me! This was such a great review though, and I have so many comments lol. For clarification on some of the technical stuff, the titan sizes and powers are kind of controlled by what titan fluid they ingest. So the syringes have spinal fluid that are drawn from specific titans, and those are used to give the titans certain qualities. For example, the one Eren ingested said "Armor" explicitly, the one that Rod ingested in the manga had katakana on it that spelled "Strongest Titan," and the fluid Levi used on Armin said "Normal Titan." Also, now that you guys know it was Zeke's spinal fluid that created the Season 2 titans, you can think back to how weird they were (even compared to normal titans), with some of them leaping or holding out their hands like wings, and that's likely because they ingested fluid from a Beast Titan, so they're all kind of mimicking different animals. I would guess they control the size by injecting fluid from different sized pure titans, since the rest of it is explicitly stated to be a result of that (in the manga at least). Also, for the Reiss chapel, nothing is explicitly stated there (so your problem with that totally still stands). Someone already mentioned the density thing that they bring up with Reiner (because the titan hardening is more spread out across his body it's not as impervious as Annie's hardening is), but what I mainly wanted to bring up is some stuff that was mentioned in the manga about the Scouts' swords. Idk if you guys picked this up, but when Mikasa is trying to kill the Armored Titan, her grapples do make it into his skin, but the swords can't penetrate. That's basically because, manufacturing-wise, most swords, even if they were high quality, weren't going to withstand constant titan-fighting, so Paradis prioritized making many, lower-quality blades that could be replenished easily to make better use of resources. So the grapples canonically can penetrate things that the swords can't cut, which probably also plays a factor in the Reiss chapel. (sorry for the long comment lol)

Ignore the fact that I'm practically talking to myself here- I don't mind Carter's opinion considering I had the same one the first time around too and it's completely fine to not love certain characters. But I see Kenny as an incredibly nuanced and introspective character. His speech before dying is absolutely brilliant, but easily overlooked when you're watching for the first time because there's so much going on. His fighting abilities is probably the least interesting part about him I think lol, he has so much depth to him. His relationship with Uri is super interesting, and I wish it'd been explored even more

While this doesn't entirely answer the question of the weird ODM physics I just wanted to point out that there's 2 parts to the ODM gear. The first is the grapple hooks itself and the second which is very important, is the gas which actually allows them to accelerate from the ground. Without the gas the grapples are pointless - so its explained ( I can't remember where exactly), for example Levi and Mikasa are much better at killing titans because they use more gas than grappling in order to have looser movement and more freedom. This can also apply to scenes where they are falling down when the colossal titan propels his steam or when the scouts jump into the sky - they use the gas aspect in order to land safely when they are tossed by the steam and whatnot. While this specifically isn't directly mentioned, that's what i inferred from the mentioning of how better titan killers and users of ODM use gas a lot more than hooks (for up and down movements).

Also, to add to the hype of Kenny, he is an Ackermann, and Ackermanns are way OP, and he has one of the best lines in the show - "Everyone is a slave to something, everyone has to be drunk on something to push on in life..." or something like that! And also in general, he represents a very interesting bag of characterisitcs - a low level thug aspiring for greater powers, not for the sake of power, but to be a better human being, a more compassionate human being. Also, it is to be noted that almost all of AoT has been well adapted from the manga, EXCEPT season 3 part 1. I feel you Carter, cause I felt the same way about the anime. I think they had to adapt 20+ chapters into 12 episodes, and as a manga reader, there are many convenient plot devices in the anime for season 3 part 1, which are not so easily available in the manga. I think many people were expecting about 22-24 episodes for the uprising arc, it was a surprise that they adapted it in half the amount of episodes. Hence the sudden entrance of Kenny, etc.

I agree with Jackson’s hot take: Erwin sacrificed other people to reach the basement, while Armin sacrificed himself to let other people (such as Eren) reach the sea. Armin cared more about the survival of humanity, and his goals lie beyond the walls and sea. Erwin made it clear that reaching the basement was more important to him and the second he saw the basement, he would’ve been satisfied. He didn’t have any other goals or plans beyond the basement. Yes, Erwin sacrificed himself towards the end but that was because of what you guys basically explained— he felt guilty about previous deaths he had put his scouts through and his selfish desire for the basement. He wanted to prove to himself that those deaths weren’t for nothing. The speech was for the scouts as much as it was for himself. I still love Erwin though, I was honestly rooting for him during my first few rewatches of the show. He’s such an interesting, complex character and his speech is so goated (pls watch it in dub) the fact that he couldn’t reach the basement when it was right there makes his death all the more tragic.

For hardening part it's stated that the walls, Annie's crystal and Reiner's armor are all the same thing. And when Eren fights Reinerhe breaks his armor because his hardening is focused on smaller area making it more effective. My guess is because the walls and the cave encompass such a large area they are breakable/chippable like when Annie breaks a piece to reveal a titan while climbing the wall or where Reiner hides before the battle

You guys might’ve missed it but they did explain why it’s only 13 years. Founder Ymir only lived 13 years after obtaining the Founding Titan. This fact is also called the Curse of Ymir. But also when you think about it, it makes sense for such powerful titans to have a downside. Mindless titans don’t have any special powers, so it’s also a punishment for them to live for a long time running around without a goal.

I like these guys because they actually get super deep into dissecting a show instead of just giving superficial praise. I feel a lot of reactors either blindly praise it like 'cool fight' or 'yo it's Levi lesgo', which is understandable, but it's cool how these guys can be hyped but also take the time to dissect things and figure out whether or not it makes sense.
