It fudges up pacing slightly and at most the tension but as we see in the reaction it didn't end up affecting their understanding OR tension. Rewatching this after finishing part 2 really makes me feel for Eren here. Even after 4 years, he was still trying to give Marley a chance to come to a solution.... He waited till the last minute just as Tybur finished declaring war to start this process. He kept hoping for someone to give Paradis a chance, only for them turn around and put the blame on "the island devils" every time.

Thanks for the upload! At this point in the story, I was on the same boat as Cannon. Everyone was a villain (not you sweet Falco) in some way, but Eren felt more like the “bad guy” in this situation. While diplomacy was unlikely, given the deep-seated hatred for Eldians, it was an option. But not an option that Eren seemed interested in. This is one of those stories where you want the characters to talk things out, gain some understanding of the opposite side, and put aside their differences. However, this is not one of those stories.

Looking back, Eren wasn’t just giving Reiner an out, but himself as well. He feels that Reiner was justified in doing what he had to do, no matter the cost, and now it’s his turn to do what he feels has to be done. I think Eren is in the wrong, nevertheless it’s easy to see how he was put in a tough spot. It’s impossible to know if there were other options, so he did what he felt was necessary, even though he had to become the devil to do so.

Obviously Eren has gone down a very dark path, but I just love his conversation with Reiner here. He was mature enough to recognize that Reiner wasn’t acting out of malice. He didn’t forgive Reiner but he understood him. And like Reiner he was going to do everything in his power to protect paradis. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but he had to keep moving forward nonetheless.
