Sasha is one of very few comic relief characters in this series, which is special because of how bleak it normally is. A character that brings a new, refreshing personality, at least imo, is a good character. Sasha is that. She even had her own personal development and character arc too, learning to give up on her old hunting ways and integrate with the rest of society. She is a great character.

Reiner says "You supposed to have the most powerful ability of all us, but you never use it unless you are told." This I believe refers to it.

A story without her, would be very different in the sense that, Gabi would most likely hold on to her strong hatred which would affect the plot. And without Sasha, the characters would be way more depressed than they were which would also affect the plot. And, you saying that she didn't bring anything to the story while also saying that her character is bad in the story, does not make any sense.

We KNEW way in advance that she was Gabi’s target, but also that someone in the C/S/J trio was going to die just going off of what Connie said. “I’m just glad you both made it, no offense to the other guys but you two are special.” *15 min later Sasha gets capped* Not saying to can’t have a predictable death but man I love when you know someone is going to die but all the characters are in such high risk situations, you don’t know who it will be. Sasha’s death episode had that surprise at first, but then they made it clear that she was going to die when she shot the who Police guys in front of Gabi… for me, her death would’ve been more surprising if she had died by Gabi and we didn’t even know Gabi was on board. Like imagine it’s one of those cut scenes where we think everyone makes it out, gabi rolls our, shoots Sasha, and then as soon as we see her shot on the floor in cuts back to again however long before she even saw Sasha shoot those guys…. Idk I think that would’ve been sick anyways that’s my hot take😂

The basic version is: Yes, it's an ability, but one that Armin has not yet learned to control. Marley knows what abilities their titans typically have, and they have training meant to help grant their Warriors those skills. Bertolt was also said to have a natural talent with his Colossal titan; he notably didn't lose control on his first transformation. During training, he was able to work towards greater control of the known Colossal titan abilities including how to use it's destruction energy emission abilities at will, and to prevent them going off by default on transformation. Meanwhile, Armin simply doesn't have access to the knowledge of the abilities or the specific kinds of training. The three times we've seen Bertolt transform without an explosion were all while he was on or by the wall, which for millions of colossal reasons he didn't want to damage too much.

It's the death of characters like Sasha, Erwin and Hannes that makes the show feel impactful. The reason Bertholdt didn't explode the first two times is because he was testing if the King of the walls would actually retaliate by using the rumbling and didn't want to risk it. That was one of the main points of their mission besides obtaining the Founding Titan. I believe it was Tybur who mentioned that in part of his speech. Plus I don't believe they knew where the founding Titan was and they didn't want to risk it by blowing her up cause they wanted to retrieve her.

The Colossal titan can choose to transform normally or charge up for an explosion, the reason why Bertoldt didn't do it the first 3 times is because he was next to the walls. The explosion of the Colossal Titan would be strong enough to destroy the wall and accidentally let out a few "mindless" colossal titans that form the wall. Back in season 2 the reverand shouted at Hange to cover up the colossal's face before the sunlight hit it (titans move with the energy of the sun). So Bertoldt transformed normally in order to not cause a small but mindless Rumbling.
