Episode 3 can feel like filler on a surface level but imo definitely isn't. There's a lot of world building but even outside of that if you only care about the story as it pertains to Joel and Ellie Because you've all finished the season it's safe to say this But there is a lot of parallels between Bill's story and Joel's story throughout the rest of the season. The letter Bill wrote for Joel especially literally ends up summarizing the conclusion Joel comes to by the end of the season. It's quite literally spelling it out for him and the audience. And for people who played the game beforehand especially and knew what was coming As Ellie was reading that letter we know exactly what it was foreshadowing that happens in the last episode.

The show really does play up Henry as this public enemy #1 who has committed some heinous crime and needs to hunted down by the entire clan. That part is different from the game. I also agree with Kathleen, the leader of the group, lacking charisma, conviction, and overall leadership qualities. Perry seems to be the one who should've been the leader. One commenter described her as "soccer mom turned revolutionary leader" lol. If there's any consolation, I think it's the idea that she represents what happens when a good person is pushed beyond her limits. She has lost her brother who she loves dearly and is now on this downward spiral of vengeance. She's filled with rage and anger. She even lies about Henry calling in mercs from outside the QZ. In a way, she's going something through similiar like what Joel had gone through. Joel lost his daughter in the beginning of the show, while she lost her brother. And we know the toll that it took on Joel and what he had become. He had become hardened, jaded, apathetic, and emotionally distant. He didn't share the same feelings with Tess and she did with him. He's lost a part of his humanity, and so did Kathleen.

2023-03-06 00:10:34 +0000 UTCI agree that the Bill and Frank episode felt kind of like a filler, but I wouldn't call it a filler. There were elements of world building, character development, plot advancing (albeit a small part), and most importantly it helped us understand the world they live and what's worth fighting for. One, we learn that FEDRA committed horrible acts of evil. They killed innocent people, including children, because the dead can't be infected. Two, introduction of raiders who live outside of QZ. The biggest takeaway from the episode is that despite the terrible circumstances of the world they're living in, it's about trying to find something worth fighting/living for. We saw that that Bill had found someone to care and fight for. We're seeing the same thing develop in Joel. It started with Tess' last dying wish and this episode only reinforces it.

2023-03-05 20:30:52 +0000 UTCbill and frank were suspected of being in a relationship in the game, however it was never really confirmed (unless the creator of the game came out and said that’s how they meant it) but if you did read the suicide note Frank left, their is no way Bill and hun were just friends or buddies, they had a much deeper connection then that, so i’m glad the episode was able to show that. However i do agree it shouldn’t have taken up a whole episode

2023-03-05 14:30:46 +0000 UTCAnyway this episode was awesome, probably best one so far. I love how Ellie and Joel's development is happening because of Ellie's efforts. If she acted stand-offish like Joel they'd be getting nowhere. I love Joel but Ellie is definitely growing on me, too.

2023-03-05 05:33:32 +0000 UTCyea the game is basically an alternate timeline where frank gets tired of bills lonely isolationist lifestyle and tries to leave but ends up committing suicide after getting bit. Bills still alive but hes super miserable and gruff. The game’s Bill is a reflection of Joel if he continued to to be a lone wolf, the show’s Bill is a reflection of Joel if he learned to care and let someone close again.

2023-03-05 05:33:13 +0000 UTCi do think they didnt have to go as deep into bill and franks story as it did but thematically it builds Joel and Ellies character arcs. the point of seeing that entire side story was to establish the concept of someone learning to find love and someone to care about again even after the world ends. It was important to establish that concept right at the end of act 1 and right as Joel and Ellie are starting their own journey together. Bills letter at the end basically summed up/foreshadowed Joels entire character arc. but yes it did probably take up an unnecessary amount of time
