Bertholdt's speech and transformation a few episodes later. Honestly, anything with Levi. He's voiced by Matt Mercer. He's known for a lot but he runs the DnD campaign critical role. Levi vs Kenny is great. His "KENNY" lives in my head rent free. And rewatching that scene just for the animation and music is awesome.

In the sub Reiner refers to Annie’s Titan as “that Titan” whereas in the dub he refers to it as “Annie.” Obviously Reiner is playing the part of a soldier, and given that he was confined with other scouts on suspicion of being a conspirator, his soldier persona should have no knowledge of Annie being the female Titan. Definitely something the script writer overlooked. Still, all the cast members give a great performance that episode, especially Reiner’s.

I have no idea why you'd change that kinda sound effect. The pitch is annoying but thematically, it's too inhuman. The Titan roar should have at least a core of humanity in it. Plus, the high pitch makes it lose it's weightiness in the mix. It doesn't feel as heavy without those lower frequencies. And I think you need that for the Titans.

2023-03-08 16:44:02 +0000 UTCAnd I agree with your characterization, that’s exactly why I love the Japanese sub more than the English dub. I don’t know, barring a few VAs like Erwin and Levi, I am not at all impressed with the English voice acting. They seem to be reading lines with a dramatic flair. Also the characterization of characters is different. Hange sounds cringey, she is actually an oddball though! Mikasa sounds unnecessarily rude and badass, whereas her character is someone who is humble and very polite (her Japanese speech is often polite whenever she is talking with anyone, Eren included). Also, being a manga reader, I don’t like the change in lines in the English dub. I understand the technicalities of changing certain lines and words to fit the flow of the English language, but I think it takes away from the original intent of the author when you change his lines. This is my personal bias, but there it is!

2023-03-08 11:51:42 +0000 UTCFor me, the dub falls short for only 2 reasons: How the performer characterizes Hange with the tone and mannerisms that they use and...MY PRIMARY ISSUE WITH THE DUB...Bryce Papenbrook's overly edgy, growly edgelord portrayal of Eren (specifically, younger Eren but any angry moments and it comes back). Everyone else does a passing to outstanding level job. The dub can be really good; it just has to deal with the performances in the sub being, on the whole, generally always spectacular. There are a few main points of comparison I always think about: 1. Carla's last words. Good in dub. Unreal in sub. There's a gut wrenching warble that just kinda sends chills. Dub is great too but still. That warble. 2. The soldier in episode 2 yelling "shut the gate" when they realize the cannons are useless against the Armored Titan and he's about to break in the gate. That raw, cracking, almost damaging vocal cords thing the VA does in the sub is an early stand out for me. Solid in dub. Spectacular in sub. 3. Eren's Titan scream. The first time we hear it at the end of episode 7. I have no fucking clue why they changed this but it's the first time we hear it. The dub screams suck. They're too high pitched and too inhuman. These are humans turned into suffering, mindless creatures; they're a human problem. The shrieking in the dub loses that. More examples in the next episode when he's fighting the Titans in Trost. 4. The reaction of the group on the walls when they see the smoke signal from Trost, signaling that Eren has plugged the hole with the boulder and humanity has won its first victory against the Titans. The shock, the disbelief, and the growing excitement of Pixis' aide and the murmurs of the crowd hit goosebump-y hard in the sub. Still good in the dub. 5. Erwin's Final Speech. One of the best speeches ever given in any audible medium in both sub and dub. This is top tier voice acting. Either way. As an American, the way the English voice actor chose to order the words was *specifically* extra effective. Hits in English with that much more punch. The connotations make it hit more in Japanese the other way. **Special mention to Erwin's other moments (specifically, when he's yelling the motto and to advance.) This isn't a voice acting issue but a language one. It's just easier to make something with these long o sounds come out more badass and fitting with a yell (Shinzooooo wo sasageyo!). And it flows better than the translation of "Give your hearts"/"Hearts and souls to the cause". Much harder to say that with any fluidity in the middle of an action scene.) Also "Advance" is good but "Susume" has the e sound at the end that you can really grind to show emotion. 6. Gabi's call to Reiner in the rubble of the Liberio raid. Sub Gabi gave me chills. Sounds like a little kid really in trouble and desperately begging for help. Dub does it well enough but I get chills from the sub. 7. Kaya's breakdown as they hold her down and comfort her after she goes for Gabi. Her screams and her wails of despair from inside the room are haunting in sub. Clear winner there. Again, not bad in dub but ooof. Right in the feels with the sub. 8. Grisha's VA yelling to Eren after doing what he did. Amazing job for both. The sub guy is just scary at delivering as hauntingly as he did. Dub is just as good in a lot of spots but I'd give the edge to the sub. These are the main differences that come to mind. I've been watched it both subbed and dubbed a lot of times and these are the biggest voice actor performances that I've found.

Also, Eren's monologue while lifting the boulder in Trost. He changes his words a little but it makes more impact at that point in the story.

Eren’s line at the end of S3 “if we kill our enemies” is good. Armin’s sacrifice is good. I’m a fan of Keith Shadis’ voice actor, so any scene of his is good. In particular I like his introductory scene yelling at the cadets, and the scene in S3 when talking to Eren about his mother, the one that plays during the credits.

Hope you like the dub either way I do like both :')

Overall, the dub is pretty good, so I would maybe watch some of the more emotional scenes in dub because you can fully appreciate the subtle inflections in the voices. The best scene in dub is Erwin's final speech and charge.

Such a good sequence. - Any Levi scene.. Especially when he’s threatening someone lol. I recommend his scenes with Zeke. - The S2 episode where they’re having the battle against the Titans and Reiner and Bertholdt.. the entire thing is so good. - Eren yelling at Reiner and Bertholdt in the forest (when RB captured Ymir and Eren) about not being humans anymore. There’s more but I can’t remember. I’m due for a rewatch! Cant wait to watch the video, I’ve been wanting to see your guys’ reactions to the dub. It’s honestly so good (as much as the sub elitists love to hate on it).

But Christa's English voice gets on my nerves tbh. 😅 both are amazing in their own right. For the English: Erwins speech(es) is amazing. I really like Levi's voice in general. Armin's voice actor does an awesome job screaming after Eren gets eaten and also when he snaps at Mikasa in season 4. Erens titan roar is cool in the English dub. Bryce Papenbrook also does a great job when Eren has that breakdown after Hannes dies. I love Connie and Sasha all the time. Mikasa's VA suits her personality.... honestly yall should rewatch the show in dub sometime and see what you think. 😂😍 I love and respect both the Japanese and English casts!

There’s more, but honestly after the latest episode I just can’t remember much about the rest of the show lol
