.A .O .T Sub vs Dub

I’ve watched the dub through maybe 4 or 5 times. I prefer it just because I like being able to see everything that’s happening on screen. I think the dub is better in a lot of ways and so is the sub. Erwin, Levi, Hange, Jean, Beast Titan, Grisha, Kenny, Titan roars are way better in the dub

i've never understood how people like dub over sub lol, 99% of the time the original is better.. same for the erwin speech i genuinely don't see the "hype" around it, sounded trash to me in dub.. just doesn't hit the same at all

I watched dub through the first time because I'm pretty new to anime and I find it easier than reading the subtitles, but I have enjoyed the sub on my rewatches since so completely understand the sub love more than dub. I'd say I like them equally for different characters, some can absolutely get very whiny in dub but then other characters hit me in the feels more when I get the tone - I love Erwin and Levi's dub VA's. However I feel sub gives you the original experience. Eren's sub VA is amazing. Overall I don't mind watching in either, since I mostly watch through reactors now, I'm happy for whatever they choose

I watched dub all the way through my first time and have watched plenty of sub through rewatch and reaction videos. Dub Eren kind of makes my skin crawl but isn’t he supposed to be like an annoying, bratty kid? I def like season 4 Eren sub better, but early season sub feels too old for him all the way through. Armin feels different in both but both ways are fine to me honestly. I like the dub more for Erwin, maybe Levi and the big moments (Reiner reveal, Erwin advance and charge). Honestly idrc which one people say is better but it’s def a different experience with the main 3 especially. I also find it hard to pick up on annunciations in Japanese (since I don’t speak it obviously). I can hear like volume and urgency shifts but those are pretty easy. A lot of the time it sounds deeper in pitch and slightly monotonous compared to a language I understand magnitudes better. I also think sometimes the script is a bit on the nose and people don’t notice it when they’re reading subs but it’s cringey in dub in the sense that it doesn’t really matter what the VA does (some of Eren’s season one dialogue honestly I think will sound a bit cringey in English no matter what). Also the titan roars hold basically zero relevance to me. I’m curious to see how well non speakers could recognize the tone of scenes in Japanese with just audio, no subs or visuals.

armins dub voice actor is super talented outside of armins character!!! he has KILLER range!!!! levi’s dub va will always be my favorite. matthew mercer just has a certain way with levi. DBZ is an amazing dub. so is FMAB!!! so hopefully whenever you guys check that one out, you watch it in dub!! i watched aot seasons 1-3 dubbed and when i got to season 4 it was only subbed so i love them both equally and feel like i got a fair chance to give both of them a pretty even shot

Bros, dub Naturo is awesome. Same with Dragonball. Maybe I’m in the minority, but I absolutely hate when my masculine adult male characters sound like a freakin woman when they talk, yell and ESPECIALLY scream. That’s why I will never watch DB in sub.

a couple of the dubbed VAs arent great, like Armin for example, and Funi as usual messed up key translations, but gotta say ive lost a little respect for Brigg and Carter on some of these opinions. Sub defintely beats a lot of dub but Erwin, Levi, and older Eren are top tier amongst others. Just feel it wasnt an objective look at them, Brigg and Carter appearing very bias to sub.

In the Dub they miss many key translations. They miss the trapped in birdcage line in episode 1 in the show, the birdcage imagery is revisited in the show. 'Shinzo wo Sasageyo' is repeated many times in the song lyrics, and the dub translation doesn't hit the same way when the characters say it. Eren's "Because I was born into this world", makes so sense to the story than the bratty 'Because it's my birth right'. They also butcher Levi's 'No regrets' lines. The original is more succinct.

Personally I love the more feral sounding titans in dub adult eren and armin voices aswell. Plus one thing you gotta remember. When dubbed you don’t have to read subtitles and take you’re eyes off what’s happening. Yes you have peripheral vision but it’s not the same as full focus on the image you’ll catch things you didn’t before.

I think it’s just personal taste. I have Japanese friends too and they like the voice acting. I don’t really see how voices like Yuki Kaji and could be as cringe as Paperbook’s bootleg Dark Knight voice, like you can tell Kaji has incredible range and can keep things subtle and jaded while still putting power into it. Obviously respect to all the VAs that work on this show, just my opinion.

n2 isn't actually really true, for any decent production, they will redraw mouth movements to fit the english dub. Most of the time the english dub actually puts more effort into matching mouth movements than the Japanese dub does which is very different from movie dubs where they can't just redraw

I'm definitely a sub viewer myself, but I can totally understand and agree with a few compelling arguments. 1) We don't have any idea how cringe the Japanese actors sound because we don't speak conversational Japanese. I've been told by a Japanese friend that they sound hella cringe to her, because it's all over-acted and ridiculously structured, which was a main complaint about the English dub from Cannon/Carter. 2) The English dub is written and acted to try and match the mouth movements of the animation, which means things get re-written and actors have to make weird pacing decisions when delivering their lines. Think about the terrible old kung-fu movies, and how they're constantly meme'd for the mouth moving like crazy all for the dub to say like two words. 3) The audio quality is significantly worse because the voices have to be mixed in waaaay later and by a different company entirely. They're taking the original audio and trying to overlay and blend entirely different audio, whereas the original Japanese voices are mixed alongside the original soundtrack and background noise. 3.5) As someone else pointed out, most of the Dub actors are recording either solo in a studio, or even just in their own home booth. Compared to the original Japanese being recorded often with multiple of the characters in the studio together, allowing then to feel each other's energy and connect better.

The dub is not horrible. From what I've seen and heard, some VA are quite good (Erwin's VA especially), and some dialogues have better flow than subbed version. But overall, the dub is not better than original japanese with subs. Just... NO. It's not even close. I'm sorry, but Eren's VA in dub is just awful, and Armin sounds like a Muppet. That's two of the main characters... Like I've said, Erwin's VA is good and very charismatic, but at the same time his voice lack underlying warmth and vulnerability of the original Erwin. The same with Levi. The original Japanese VA Hiroshi Kamiya has such a beautiful and unique tone as Levi. It's full of layers, hidden depths and color. While American VA's voice just sounds deep (befitting a badass) and that's it. Overall, my favorite AoT characters sound like a joke in dub (Eren, Armin, Reiner), or good but lacking something (Erwin, Levi). Btw, the Titan roars in dub are atrocious... So bad it's almost funny.

I'm pretty strongly in the Carter and Cannon camp (sub > dub for like 99% of things). I will give the Erwin scene props though. I actually felt something. Particularly when Erwin was explaining the plan and answering Floch's question about whether it even was worth doing. That part. I surprisingly felt emotional just from listening. So I would say either they are equal in this scene of probably more like 60/40 or 55/45 with sub winning out since I liked the Erwin talking to Levi scene and charge scene better in sub too.

The one part of the anime I like in Dub better is probably Erwin's speech but it is still really close. I just love the line "Because my soldiers do not buckle or yield when faced with the cruelties of this world". That just hits home for the human condition that we all face. Just have to be strong when the world is unfair.

I’m a dub guy. Watching you guys is actually my first time watching the sub. I’ve seen AoT probably 4-5 times. I prefer the dub because I love being able to see everything that’s happening on screen. I’ve also played the video games (you guys should definitely play those, they’re so fun) and I’ve read the manga which is also great

Great vid!!! I love both the sub and dub! The first time I watched AoT, I watched the Dub so I could focus more on the story instead of just on reading the subtitles, so I think I have more of an appreciation for it for that reason. I think yall would've liked it better if yall had watched the dub first cuz there would've been no expectations. In some moments the sub is better and in some moments the dub is better! I would love to see another AoT sub vs dub vid like this!

Honestly, it is all up to opinion and the first medium you watch the show in will automatically make you lean towards that medium. With that being said, I do think that the Sub just fits the writing better since that's what the original writing was in. The Japanese language's intensity matches the emotion and darkness of the world the writer made. English is a really plain language compared to more passionate languages like Japanese, German, Spanish, etc. So it almost comes off as cheesy when you hear the Dub at certain points.

I can’t lie sub ALL the way, the nuances of the Japanese language just sound better and are done better. The dun sounds so Americanised and cliche. It just doesn’t feel or sound right. I can never watch any anime in dub though so I’m definitely biased. The way I see it is, Japanese writers wrote this, I think it just sounds better in Japanese! Just my opinion 😂😂

Also I think AoT sub had the benefit of 1) Isayama himself would sit in during some sessions and give his thoughts + 2) in general the voice actors record lines together in a group, so can work off one another. Dub records in solo booths so sometimes it just feels jarring and doesn't mesh as well.

I'm a little bit under 30 minutes with the video. I think in my opinion as to why the titan's roar is higher pitched than the Japanese is what we are seeing with Kaiju movies these days like Godzilla and Kong. I don't know if it's scientifically accurate, but some studios were trying to remake what an actual T-Rex would sound like based off their vocal chords and the bone structure around their throats. They found that the T-Rex's roar would have more of a higher pitch than what we get in like Jurassic Park. So I wonder if that's the direction they were going for with the Titans. I do prefer the sub version, but I can understand the English dub's perspective, if what I said is correct.

As the comment above said, the dub VAs are so sweet and love the characters they play so it hurts to see so many negative comments 😭 Eren’s VA, Bryce Papenbrook, dislocated his jaw while working on that Paths scene where Eren tries to break free from the chains in order to get to Founder Ymir! Regarding Carter’s comment about the dialogue sounding more shonen in dub— I think it’s because we’re actually listening to it versus reading the dialogue. Since we cannot understand Japanese, the sub VAs can get away with overacting. In the table scene, for example, it was so easy to catch the dub VAs “trying too hard” because we can actually understand what they’re saying, so it’s easy to focus on their tone. That’s also to say that Japanese speaking mannerisms (don’t know if that’s the right term) are different than other languages so it might sound unnatural to us when that’s translated to English. I appreciate the dubs because I tend to multitask (full time student 🥲) and it helps to listen in a language I understand while doing whatever else I have to do!

It makes me feel a little bad reading all these comments about terrible dub😭I feel bad mostly cuz the dub actors truly are trying their best and putting it all into their work while multiple people are bashing on their efforts💔I like both dub and sub but prefer most anime in dub if ur wondering, I’m not even trying to be biased or say sub is bad cuz there are def some scenes better in sub! I just love many dub voice actors and know how genuine of a person they are and how much the series means to them and it doesn’t seem like many people here really even respect the amount of effort they attempt to put into these series instead it’s mostly just negative-ish comments. I'm with you guys that at some point all of them sound the same lol. I had to avert my eyes from one scene were Levi and Erwing were talking and they almost sounded the same but then again, english is not my first language and I absolutely hate English dub for other animes, I have watched some scenes from Dragon Ball and omg that's like the worst thing I've hear in years, I don't know, they sound so fake, like... People doesn't talk like that... so yes I'm biased. Either way, in Japan being a Seiyuu (voice actor) is a big thing, it's a profession, they go to school for it and they are some sort of celebrities. And yes, AOT has big names on the cast, like Yuki Kaji himself, but also Hiroshi Kamija and Daisuke Ono (Levi and Erwin) they have work as a duo in many many animes, they even had a radio show together and both have won best seiyuu award multiple times. There are a lot of videos on YouTube about the VA doing a live interpretation of their characters, in case you guys are interested on it.

People have already mentioned this but sub is usually superior because in Japan voice acting is a very competitive, high-paid profession while over here it's usually a whatever rush-job trying to lip sync to the mouth movements. The animation industry over there is like America's Hollywood basically. There ARE really amazing dubs like Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood though (which I hope yall watch in the future cause FMAB is the highest rated anime of all time!)

Mikasa's headaches and her 'lack of free will' was already disputed in the scene between Zeke and Eren when they were throwing the baseball and when Eren asked Zeke about it, to which Zeke said that Mikasa just likes Eren THAT MUCH that she is willing to kill every titan for him. That scene would be pointless if it wasn't true, along with many other examples where Eren has been beaten and punched in front of Mikasa and she didn't immediately jump in to protect him.

My gf is into S4 dubbed because she doesn't want to miss something while reading which I can understand BUT Hange, Armin, Reiner and Sasha (dont get me started on wth they were thinking with titans) make my soul cry when i hear because they can't even begin to compare to the great voice actors for the sub. That and the fact that there have been so many times while we watch that i groaned with my face covered and told her, "That's not what they said." Best example is the first episode when they said in dub something to the effect of "on that day humanity realized they were nothing but cattle" and i had to show her the sub ending about birds in a cage. Edit:I am SO bummed there weren't any scenes with Hange in there but ik there are so many to choose from. She is a great one because in sub she is so eccentric and emotional and the moment i heard in dub i turned to my gf and said "im sorry but this is disgusting compared to the original" while laughing, she watched the same scene when where she talks to eren all night and wholeheartedly agreed. you guys should check out even just the scene where Eren grabs the spoon or her send off for sub vs dub opinion. Wish i could see reaction but even just an opinion on it would be awesome. :p

No matter what people say, the English language nuance, or any other language for that matter, will never match up to the Japanese nuance in any anime. It's the nuance and the delivery of the language that matters. Not only can I not stand English dubs, I can't even stand Korean dubs and I say this because I am both Korean and Japanese and speak both languages. If it isn't Japanese, it all sounds cheesy and you can hear the over-acting.

I agree, it’s not just the words, but translating the emotions from the original version to the dub version is lost. It’s like the directors and dub VAs attach their own interpretation to the scene, completely forgetting the intended emotions described by the author. The same is true of Mikasa, she is supposed to be a very reserved individual who is also very polite. But they needlessly make her rude and offensive at times, which goes against her core character!

Definitely see why you say it sounds cheesy, like Power Rangers. I watched in dub first and then watched sub, and I still like the dub better (voices and script). My theory is that with Japanese audio, you have an advantage: you hear the voices, and you read the words, but since you can't audibly understand Japanese, you mentally interpret the subtitles through the voices you're hearing. It's like rereading Harry Potter after you've watched the movies - you can't get the actors' voices out of your head, so you read it in their voices. But when watching dub, you have no means of interpretation, since it's your language. Plus, some Japanese sentences take longer to say than in English, so English VAs have to talk slower, making it sometimes sound more cheesy when they're just trying to match the mouth movements. And sometimes, yeah, the Japanese delivery is objectively better.

This is the first time that I have watched AoT with English dub and it just feels wrong. English isn't my native language so I have always watched all animes with subs. Voice acting is such a big industry in Japan that you have more talented voice actors there.

Some of those scenes in dub def weren't as bad as I thought they would of been. I'm a sub person through and through but Erwin's and Levi's english voice actors did a great job :) Love the praises for Kaji Yuki though - he's one of the most talented VA's

I am absolutely geeking out rn~ There is a whole fandom, which I am a part of, dedicated to just Japanese voice actors. In Japan, voice actors are called seiyuus (pronounced say-you-s). They have a similar status to celebrities, especially popular ones like Yuki Kaji, who voices Eren, and Hiroshi Kamiya, who voices Levi. There are whole ticketed events and spectacles for popular animes where the seiyuus read scripts live and the artists who created the soundtrack play the music live. It's absolutely insane. IMO I love both sub and dub of this show. The dub is really bad at some parts and absolutely goated in other parts, whereas the sub is steady quality. So I can see why people steer clear of it. Especially in the first season.

It shows in the show in a flashback with Eren and the beast titan that with what Ksaver taught him and in his notes that there were no such things about the protecting the host being forced or happened by mistake. It was simply of just a matter that Mikasa was just THAT devoted to Eren.

Erwin's final speech in the dub is the worst. In the sub-version, it's a shockingly calm speech that feels more like an honest conversation he's having with the scouts and for the first time, he's completely open that there's no happy ending, no paradise that this will create, but to remember why they came this far and what could exist after they're gone. In the dubbed version, its just another generic macho speech

I just prefer watching media in its source language tbh. Arcane's english voice acting sounds much more natural to me compared to the usual japanese shonen dubs where it gives off that over-the-top power rangers vibe. It's like how translated texts can sometimes miss nuances, intonation, and wordplay from the source.

I watched aot around 2014 in sub and honestly didn't even know a dub was made for season one till s2. When season 2 aired i watched it with a friend who made me watch it in dub and the transition between the two was so intense, it took me so long for it to not feel weird But since then I've stuck with aot in dub besides when new episodes air, and i would say the dub is great, & although i AM a filthy dub main, i would never go as far to say it is ever better than a sub, maybe only in specific moments. The only gripes that I have with aot's dub sometimes that you guys also shared were Armin and Eren's voice actors, which (since i love to geek out over voice actors) both VA's seem to be a little out of their element for their character. Bryce Papenbrook, who voices Eren, is good for younger/teen Eren, but that deep voice that Eren has in S4 isn't really Bryce's strong suit. Josh Grelle voices Armin and I'd REALLY recommend to check out some other characters they voice (like Tokoyami from MHA), because they're a lot more suited for mid-deep voiced characters, similar to Erwin's dub voice. :)

I 100% agree with you! Especially with Levi's voice in dub, I don't hear any sarcasm in his voice whenever he gets his moment. it's like Carter mentioned, he sounds so monotone the majority of the time. His sarcastic/calm personality is what makes his character enjoyable to watch and it lacks so much in the dub. At least to me it doesn't bring out the dry humor that is in the original sub.

Loved the video!! It was fun. I HATE eren’s voice in dub, i’m a big fan of Yuki kaji’s voice he is the goat.. As always i agree with Carter, it sounds so shonen almost like a disney lmao i didn’t enjoy the dub even if it’s not that bad sometimes. My opinion is, it change the meaning and the emotion soo much!! Personally, the titan roars in sub sound like they're going "UHHHHH" whereas the dub is more unique to each and Eren's is particularly screechy, I like that about it. The dialogue is less noticeable when you're alone I guess lmao, but honestly I do feel like I can hear inflections better in English, and some characters are better than others. I hope VA work gets more investment because there's a few people you hear in a lot of anime, and the bar is pretty low. I hope its new popularity encourages an investment in paying for good VAs, or give them the time/money to deliver better product.

Even as a dub enjoyer I’ve always hated that Eren vs. Annie transformation scene. Armin’s ‘flashback’ voice sounds whiny and it’s as if it’s coming through a tin can. And Eren’s voice in that scene sounds like he’s doing an impression of Christian Bale’s dark knight. Plus the dub roar is just objectively worse.

I'm a dub enjoyer, but the only scene in this show that I think the dub is a definite win for me (other than most Erwin scenes) is the scene in S2 where Eren and Reiner are having their screaming match in the trees.

Another thing to keep in mind with dubs is that they have to match the mouth flaps of Japanese words. So, while they keep the general spirit of what the sub is saying (especially from S2 onward), they do have to change some lines sometimes to either make the mouth flaps match more naturally or because of the difference between written English (the subs) and spoken English. (That is to say: sometimes, the way we would write something is different than how we would speak it. The meaning is about the same, but the order of the sentence or the words used may differ slightly.)

The first time I watched the show was in dub and didn’t notice any issues my first time since I had nothing to compare it to. I would say overall the sub is better but I personally prefer being able to listen to the tone of each word and understand it rather than reading subtitles. Also Armin in dub is 100x better than in sub, I hate is high pitched voice.

It’s interesting how he never actually said this to them. Also I love how Armin went to punch him for hurting Mikasa just like when she punched him to the ground for insulting Armin in season 1. Their Japanese VAs are insanely talented and while the dub has its moments, the sub is just in a league of its own imo.

Not just you. I try giving dubs a fair share and love some (YYH, Death Note, bebop, FMAB). AoT just isn't it. Armin sounds like Arthur from PBS, Eren sounds like Dark Knight Bale x 2, Reiner switches accents sometimes, it's just not to the quality of sub. Good job guys! Cannon and Carter restored my faith. I think the sub is far better than the dub. I find the dub forced and cringey, but that is just me. I have found the dub voices as cosplaying the characters not actually playing them, hence they sound silly at times. When Briggs hyped certain dub moments, I was confused because I do not think there is any scene in all the seasons where the dub surpasses the sub. And I laughed at Cannon and Carter's hilarious expressions, they reflected my mirth, shock and disbelief as well! :)

I’m not sure if you guys missed it but the Ackerman power and the whole “protecting the host” thing was debunked by zeke in the 28th episode of the 4th season. Zeke tells eren that there is no such thing as “ackermans protecting their host” and that the real reason she protects him is because she “adores him”. I think we were left to conclude that the reason eren said that (knowing it wasn’t true) was because he was trying to push her away and possibly make it easier for her and armin to attack him and not feel bad about it.

Unpopular opinion but I actually don’t mind the attack titan roar in the dub. To me, I think it sounds a little more horrifying like some out of this world creature, I feel more terror when hearing the dub roar. I think both are great tho!

Oh, for sure. I got a taste of that myself when I watched S1 subbed on Netflix and then watched S2 dubbed on TV. I nearly stopped watching because of Armin's one scene in the first S2 episode. (The voice he had just shocked me that much.) I continued on, though, and, now, I honestly don't care which version I watch. Another example is Demon Slayer: I watched S1 dubbed first, and then watched S1 (a second time) and S2 subbed with a friend. Then I saw S3E1 dubbed, and it took some getting used to since it'd been so long (just under three years; that's when the last episode of S1 came out) since I'd heard the dub voices. Again, though, since I'm so used to switching between sub and dub now compared to when I first saw AoT S2, I don't mind. I'll use my friend that I mentioned as a third example: he saw AoT subbed (and, so far, to my knowledge, only subbed), saw My Hero Academia dubbed, and then saw Demon Slayer subbed. He's seen some dubbed clips of Demon Slayer and has told me he just can't do it. In particular, he can't get over Inosuke and Tanjiro's dubbed voices. (He's also much newer to anime than I am, too. He started watching AoT, IIRC, either just before or while S4Pt1 was airing. I got into anime just a few months before AoT S2 started airing.)

I think the main reason the Attack on Titan dub suffers somewhat is because S1 was dubbed in 2014, and S2 was dubbed in 2017. Believe it or not, those three years made a huge difference in the dubbing industry (and Funimation in particular, the company that dubbed both seasons). These days, however, most major dubs (Attack on Titan's later seasons included) are at least on par with the sub.

Levi is fairly monotone in the dub, but I feel like it fits his character well. He's to come across calm, cool, collected, a little aloof. That tone that conveys he's probably broiling with emotions underneath. Erwin's dub voice is one of my favorites. He speaks with such assurance and authority, very charismatic.
