Then he just snaps and writes Lind L Taylor crooked and at like a 10X of the size he normally rights. Just a cool way of showing how he completely changes in that moment through the text itself

Light Yagami is a murderer, so the writer deliberately gave him an unlikely name to prevent children with the same name from being bullied at school.

To add on to this comment: There is a trend in Japan where parents give their children “yoonique” names by using Kanji 1) as the phonetic symbol, regardless of its meaning or 2) for the meaning, regardless of how it’s actually read. For scenario 1: Imagine Eren was a Japanese student, and his parents gave him a kirakira name. Instead of using エレン (read as “Eren”), they use 永恋, which could be read as “Eren” (永 = “ei”, 恋 = “ren”). However, the meaning of the Kanji has nothing to do with the meaning of the actual name. (Collectively, 永恋 translates to “eternal love”. Kind of fitting for his character when I think of the lyrics of Akuma no Ko 😢) Scenario 2 is Light’s name. His parents most likely decided on the name “Light” first, and then chose the Kanji with a similar meaning. Unexpectedly, they decided to use the Kanji for “moon” (月, read as “tsuki”) instead of the Kanji for “light” (光, read as “hikari”). At first glance, you would not know his name is meant to be pronounced as “Raito”.

Coincidentally, “kirakira” (キラキラ) means shining, glistening or sparkling; which kind of alludes to “Light”. Light’s full name, Yagami Light (夜神月), is also interesting. His surname, Yagami (夜神), translates to “night god” and his first name, 月, means “moon”. 月 does not actually mean “light” and would normally be read as “tsuki”. If anything, you would expect his name to be ライト(“raito”) which is Katakana for “light” (because his name is derived from an English word). However, the mangaka decided to use the Kanji for “moon” as his name. I think the reason being, to continue the theme and reinforce the idea that Light views himself as a God that lights up the dark world.

The aggressive way it’s done in the dub is so much more epic IMO

That makes the name “L” symbolic since the letter L doesn’t exist meaning the character doesn’t exist (essentially anonymous) making it difficult/impossible for Light to find who L is 🤯 Anyways I am so excited for you guys to witness the greatest cat and mouse chase in anime history 😊
