Work culture in Japan is very toxic so a very big portion of people are working the whole day, and it’s becoming common to see people sleeping at work and works to have separate employee living spaces at the office. Most middle age- older workers are so overworked that there’s no way they would be able to have enough time or energy to actually be Kira. So the likelihood that it’s a younger person, say high school to college, which have more free time and energy, as well as the fact that most students live with their parents limiting the need to work and financial burden and stress isn’t an outrageous conclusion to come too. The hours Kira are active are outside of school hours, not work hours, in Japan. So a keen observation on L’s part which the police agreed with bc it’s makes more sense from a Japanese persons perspective.

What I meant was that there may be several groups of individuals whose occupations would match with the timings of death other than students (maybe that is the schedule of a housewife, or a part-time worker, etc.). I am sure L would have thought of these probabilistically, it perhaps wasn't conveyed well in the anime. He only stated the possibility of the individual being a student (can be a college student as well, perhaps), and his immediate zeroing in on this specific group was what made me think perhaps that was a bit too much on the nose (of course, Light then switches up his timings, which then solidifies the student theory). But anyway, I am sure that it was an educated guess!

That said, if you could please try episode 8 in dub I promise you the meme moment (which you’ve likely seen/heard already with no context as it’s iconic) is delivered so so so much better in the dub. The dub Ryuk, Light and L just have this sassy flavour that doesn’t come through in sub in my opinion.

Even 5pm was considered leaving very early.

Personally, I prefer L and Ryuk’s English voices. I like Light’s English and Japanese voices equally. Look, I’m a Miyano Mamoru simp, but I think Bradley Swaile is just as impressive as Light. He can sound corny at times, but there are times when his performance is better than Mamoru’s. This is a hill I’m willing to die on.

2023-05-02 00:10:23 +0000 UTC@shiro The point of reading into the timings of the killings was to determine any patterns, had light been an unemployed adult, the patterns would have been much more sporadic and would most likely not have alligned so well with a students schedule (strict on the weekdays, free on the weekends) of course Light could have just been smart and "spoofed" his indentity and pretended to have been a student from the beginning, but L was probably quite confident that this wasn't the case because he proved that Light was very careless until after the first confrontation. Had he been more paranoid and careful from the beginning, he wouldn't have fallen for that trick and even with all this, L still considered members of the police force suspects too, he didn't rule any adults out, he just made the conclusion that it was most likely a student and that he'd have to add the families of the police force into the suspect list too

There was certainly evidence to back it up, but he wasn't 100% gung ho on 'only focus on students, ignore everyone else'. It was just another avenue to entertain (and it became even more likely when Light changes the timings of the deaths, as it makes it obvious Kira is trying to divert them away from the student hypothesis). L also deduced Kira had a childish mentality (when provoked by Lind L Taylor, he decided to kill him even though he didn't know he was a criminal, just because he got shit talked lol). Moreover, as for the reason Kira wouldn't be unemployed, I mean, unemployed people tend to have no strict schedule. The schedule they got from Kira's deaths were pretty regimented. That alone might not be enough proof, but coupled with everything above, the student hypothesis becomes more likely (and once again, it wasn't a definitive claim, just another possibility L didn't want to ignore since everyone assumes the youth are innocent in many cases).

Not 100% 'he's definitely a student, only focus on students'. He was just entertaining every possible avenue, and the evidence certainly leaned that way. And then his theory became even more likely when Light decided to change up the timings, as it makes it more suspicious that Kira is trying to divert attention away from the student hypothesis.

Next to that they also looked at the holidays etc. Someone who works does not have consistent holidays as someone who is going to school. that together with the other things he noticed. it just makes it more likely be a student and someone who is young, then someone who older and working. He never said it was 100% sure a student, just that it is more likely a student (so % favour of it being one). Unless something else suggest otherwise you would also go for the highest chance so L is just going on the highest likely chance until his thought process is proven false.

I’ve often found L’s conclusion that Kira is a student far-fetched, but given that he caught Kira in such a brilliant way in the previous episode kept up my interest and I was willing to let it slide.

Now, I think Cannon thinks more ahead than maybe a lot of us did in the first watch because he saw AOT first haha and is a normal thing because we want this show to live up to what has been promised... BUT I think that it is really logical concluded that Light is an student and not a adult worker because of the childish behavior due that direct confrontation... Also, Light demonstrated his level of maturity by wanting to kill L at the moment he told him that what he was doing was evil... besides, the working day in Japan in 2016 (to put a date, because in the anime I think it was 2008) was from 10 to 12 hours a day... that means that half of a working day would be about 6 hours... so it's likely that if you start working at 7:00 am your schedule ends at 5:00 pm, so the hours of work and the hours when the killings began do not coincide... The working culture in Japan was really abusive at that time (it still is) so have free time after 4:00 pm was a thing only a student could joy...

Personally, the voices aren't a big deal as long as I understand the juicy plot and the version that will give me the least amount of headache (like pausing) lol.
