live action will always have to be the original audio no matter what, but for anime, it depends since these are animated characters so the dub and sub VAs can embody that character in their respective version. In my case, I started with dub at a young age then moved to sub b/c dub wasn't catching up with the sub. There are some great dubs out there too!

I started anime as a kid with dub and gradually moved to sub when the animes that I was watching didn't catch up to the sub. I found the dub to be simple than if I were to start with a sub (maybe I wasn't knowledgeable back then haha). Tbh, just to name a few, animes like Naruto, Bleach, Yu-gi-oh, Beyblade, Blue Dragon, DN, Pokemon (who can forget lol), etc were great in dub. Dub took over my earlier years and I enjoyed every moment of it. I had to shift to sub to continue watching a few of them and many others. Of course, I started to gradually like sub as well. The largest issue that va's for dubbing face is that they are given a script and told to make it match as well as they can with the animation RIGHT NOW!!! and the dubbing just doesn't feel right because of that. There are some AMAZING anime where they did it right but most of the time i feel like the english show companies don't care to do it right and it just doesn't hit as well as the original va's that were ivolved from the start. Nah the “second part” of DN is nowhere near as bad as GoT s8 lol. S8 was so bad it literally killed the goodwill GoT cultivated over a decade. No one discussed its merits after lol, people now just remember the stain that was s8 It’s more like s5-6 GoT. Interesting but clearly not as peak as 1-4. Though the manga is better since the anime rushed through some parts.

I usually prefer sub almost always, but this dub is truly exceptional. Light’s VA is bone-chilling from what I remember and I just love L’s VA and his eccentric portrayal. Of course, I might be a tad biased because I originally watched the whole series dubbed since the friend that watched it with me would only watch it in English. Then again, I also LOVE the AOT dub if not prefer it now circa season four, so some may find my opinion controversial, lol. At the very least, you guys gave it a chance and that’s awesome.

I actually think most people are kinda overdramatic about the ending part of Death Note being "worse". There's plenty happening in the story to enjoy and when I came back to the show and finished it I was glad I did. Yeah, the thing about the part of the show that Brig is talking about is that there is a clear break in the writing. And the second part is not bad it just feels so bad when compared to the first part I would the first part a 9.8/10 and the second part like a 6.8/10. It's not it's just meh... Centuries is a bit of a stretch. First anime ever dubbed was exactly 60 years ago...not gonna lie i expected more recent than that. Imo if a show is being watched by a native English speaker and the dub and sub are both at least fine(some smaller budget shows are truly unbearable, but basically any popular show fits) then the real answer to sub v dub is which one you watch first. This is a take from someone who was a dub watcher and then converted to sub. Every show I have seen first in dub I think the dub sounds better and same for sub and everyone I talk to this opinion holds up. I'm 90% sure it is because your brain hears the first voice and connects it with the character. Ofc this may not be true for individual characters, like even though I saw first 3 seasons of AoT in dub, I still don't like armin's voice in it as much, but its accurate for shows overall. Just my opinion

again, it should not even be a question to watch anime shows in dub. Just watch it on the original audio. Would you try the japenese or french or whatever dub for a show like Incredible? Just some clarification: the 'old man' the shinigami were talking about is not an actual man that Ryuk gave a deathnote to. They were refering to their 'boss' or like the shinigami god. If i remember correctly they were talking about how Ryuk had 2 death notes without their boss (the old man) knowing about it. Or Ryuk just didn't give it back, not 100% sure. The reason why the Dub's voice lines aren't perfectly 1 to 1 translated is due to the animation. The animation is perfectly synced only for Japanese character lines (I'm pretty sure), when the characters talks, the animation shows that. If you tried to perfectly translate it to English, you'll most likely see characters continuing to talk when the animation has already stopped, leaving it janky and jaring, almost like youtube video which has 1 sec behind audio issues. So because of that, the dubbing has to 1) try to convey the overall message as closely to the original meaning, and 2) making sure the English words is within the character talking or aka the animation!

The thing with Anime like Death Note and Code Geass is that most of us watched it a long time ago, like almost a decade ago. Back then Anime wasn't as accessible as it is today, and a large percentage of watchers could only find it in English, not Japanese with subs. This is why so many people recommend the dub; it's what we grew up with.
