I think you guys will like it as well, and the writing will get better from here on out.

2023-07-03 07:41:01 +0000 UTCMan, I love these two episodes plus the next one. This is where this season turned from “really good” to a “peak” for me. Farming is truly goated. The rest of the season from here on is all bangers in my opinion. Why retainers mess up with their farm, I think that is a great question. First of all, they are clearly assholes. But also, I think the story adds another layer to their motivation which makes it so great. They think that their position in this society is threatened. Like Einar said in second episode of the season, they don’t own any land, so they have to work for the master too. They don’t have the autonomy and freedom of a landowner and their freedom is limited too but not as much as slaves and that gives them a false superiority that they don’t want to let go. In this episode their belief in status quo is again questioned by the fact that “slaves” can farm even better than a “free man” which puts them in a reactionary position again because their ideology is slaves can’t and shouldn’t be farming so they deserve to be slaved and used like a livestock whereas retainers can have some form of freedom and be hired to farm instead of slaves. This false ideology serves a justification of the system in which retainers try to preserve their social position (“being better than slave”) but their economic position as well. The real fear they have is if slaves can be used for farming than why would landowners hire farmers? And if somehow actually get their freedom by farming, they can even be competition for them too. Einar is pro-solidarity of the people of labor that’s why he is so shocked and angry about retainers doing this (“They should now the difficulty and joy of growing wheat.”). Retainers feel they are getting shafted by the system and slave labor but instead of siding with people who does the same work as them (support their emancipation and form solidarity), they blame slaves which is group that has no power and most exploited. Unfortunately, this type of class positioning of the people in the middle is seen all the time in history when utilizing rhetoric against any minority group that tries to find emancipation. For example, same kind of abhorrent arguments and justifications were used in pro-slavery and pro-segregation side in USA not too long ago. I mean that was just one subplot in last two episodes. There are so many things covered with side characters so well. The story explores ideas around how accumulation and distribution of property and wealth shapes society and can create unjust power hierarchies through side characters like Einar, Gramps, Snake, these two kids that punished, Ketil and Arnheid so well. And it does that while also having an insanely good, character developing story arc about his main character trying to overcome his violent past. Which makes Vinland Saga such a peak show. Anyway, I can go on forever but I feel like this has been so long already, so I look forward to upcoming episodes and I hope you enjoy it.
