The context was completely different, but the point remains roughly the same - to say that even though he was the most powerful man in the region at the time, his might still paled compared to that of God. As a Dane, knowing this famous line beforehand made that moment pretty sick ngl, though I totally get why it would confuse the heck out of you or seem kinda random lmao Vinland Saga generally has a lot of historical facts right, especially in terms of how the culture is portrayed (I'm mostly referring to general stuff and not so much what the historical characters said or did). Makoto Yukimura deserves praise not only for his incredible storytelling and art, but also his extensive research into viking culture

I want Vinland Saga to win so bad, it's one of the best show's I've watched, not animes, shows, it is one of the best, but I doubt it will win considering the competition this year and the type of audience it appeals to.

It was like a full circle moment when Thorfinn said “I have no enemies” 😭 such an iconic line , just gives me goosebumps!! There’s no anime this year that even compares to Vinland in those aspects. If Vinland doesn’t win anime of the year, it’s literally because “Anime of the year” is a popularity contest and as we already know, VS doesn’t have nearly as many fans as the rest. Y’all are stuck on comparing this season with the last but S2 as it stands is a masterpiece in its own right.

Another thing which I think is important in anime especially is daring to show the 'boring' parts of a story. I have so much respect for writers who do that, because you just know they care more about writing a good story than satisfying the audience in general with baseless 'hype'. That being said, I love a lot of anime and I don't hold all of them to that standard because I enjoy the fun and careless vibes too

2023-08-07 18:13:35 +0000 UTCIt would depend on how you would judge something to be "anime of the year," but things that I usually look for in an anime (or any show/movie for that matter) include complex themes, character development or multi-dimensional characters, "showing and not telling" the story, and well-constructed writing. This is why I don't watch 95% of shows and movies out there, but Vinland Saga has definitely restored my faith in story-writing.

For the Gek's earlier posts which were hosted on Streamable which is blocked in my country, the choice of VPN server made a big difference in rate of buffering.

While most people will see Olmar's decision to surrender as cowardly, it takes someone with courage to go against the norms especially in a time period when fighting is considered a necessity and an honor. I am glad you guys are having this discussion on whether peace can truly be achievable through non-violent means, or with more fighting. This is a philosophical debate to considered when watching future seasons of Vinland Saga..

The way I see it - Canute wants to stop random violence by being the king and having the sole monopoly on violence. He says in S1E18, "I will give meaning to your battles, I will tell you when to fight", etc. He wants to unite the Vikings under him so that they follow his command and do not commit raids and violent acts randomly of their own free will. They will only go to war if Canute commands them, and he intends to go to war as a last resort, having given his 'enemies' ample time to reconsider and surrender. He also wants to put a stop to pillaging during war, which he can do only when he is the commander of the armies and Vikings under him. We as the audience know that he wants to requisition the farm to finance the Danish army in England, but Thorfinn and Einar don't. From their perspective, either he is punishing Ketil for Olmar's actions, or he just wants to take over the farm, which is why Einar calls him a thief and asks him to create a farm of his own instead of stealing what is essentially others hard work. Thorfinn really has nothing to leverage against Canute's arguments, because he really does not know the true reason for Canute's actions. And Canute does not want to back down, for the sake of his kingdom depends on acquiring this productive asset (farm), for which he even came himself to requisition the farm. Seeing it play out in the next two episodes will be interesting.

That's what the duty of a king is." it basically comes down to making sacrifices(through war/death) to build peace which is very ironic imo I also LOVE the moral debates that occur in masterful shows like aot, vinland saga and death note!
