Probably because of musui or whatever the gods name is, so rather than write his name and has it be erased he wrote something that'd be "safe"

But it is even more beautiful than the Tokyo you see with your own eyes. I bought a book of artwork from the film 😊If you get the chance, come on a trip to Tokyo. From Japan with love.

THe volcano - the lake, the staircase etc

2023-08-26 04:31:27 +0000 UTCThe movie follows an old myth in Asian folklore which is believed that some ( not most of us as Brigg was saying about the grandma) are destined to be with a particular partner in that life aka their soulmate. And their connected through an invisible red string which the movie's tangible object would be the bracelet/hair band(?). I think a good scene to refer back on is when their both on top of the mountain and they able to meet due to an eclipse then he throws her the string; connecting/creating a bond with each other. oh i forgot to say but its called "The Red String of Faith".

You definitely need to watch the other Makoto Shinkai movies, namely Weathering With You and Suzume, which just came out in theaters a couple months ago. Both are 10/10 as well, and they both feature the same music composer and band too (Radwimps). Also Taki and Mitsuha have short scenes in Weathering With You, and the main girl from Garden Of Words (also 10/10 IMO) is Mitsuha's teacher in Your Name.

I agree absolutely, tbh if I was in any of their shoes, living their lives, playfully changing small details in the other person’s lives, keeping notes out and teasing… I would definitely have felt a little something. What you said about Taki finally realising he loves Mitsuha after losing her and the flashback that she actually went to find him 3 years ago when he didn’t even know her. I would have been touched. Mitsuha is also kind of an outcast, haven’t really talked much to anybody around except for her two friends. Then having a connection with a guy, living his life which she dreamt of, in the city and cafe. Having conversations through journals would have done something to her heart too! And yes, absolutely LOVE this type of love story. Rather than blatantly seeing the couple fall in love, I get to FEEL the connection and emotions and the process of falling in love so discreetly.

When Tessie calls her the night the comet hits she says "I just didn't feel like going" implying that she hadn't gone to school that day (likely spent the whole day in bed depressed) Taki then wakes up in her body the morning of that day when he goes for a do-over

But when he wakes up in her body the hair is already short, and she went to Tokyo yesterday. So did Tokyo / the cutting of the hair happen the day before and we just skipped a day right to the night of the comet in her timeline? Otherwise they don’t match up.

I feel like the body swapping was a generational thing they all experienced and it started from the effects of the first comet or something, but they all had their own experiences and they weren't all just for this moment

I don’t feel like you really need to see it develop on screen the stereotypical way most romances do, given their unique situation. Imagine living someone else’s life and seeing the life they’ve lived by literally walking in their shoes. That connection is something they never have and never will share with another person. Love can be developed in many ways. I don’t think Taki truly realized that he loved Mitsuha until he experienced the grief of believing he lost her. Sometimes, you don’t know what you got until it’s gone. First he lost the ability to switch with her, then he discovered she died. That loss he experienced gave him perspective on how much that person meant to him. Then when he switches back in her body he was so overjoyed. And when they meet at the crater he finally understood what he was feeling is love! It’s not a typical love story, and personally that’s why I love it. This entire movie presents ideas to the audience in a way that is not black and white 😊 however, I can understand that may not be everyone’s cup of tea! Some people may like the romance to be more clearly built up in a way that’s easier to pick up on. Regardless, I absolutely loved watching your reactions to this! Ya’ll are seriously the best. Definitely wanna see your reactions to both A Silent Voice and Weathering with you.

Catching the small things the second time around is great: like the iphones hinting at what time you're in, her Mitsuha having braided hair and his Mitsuha is like forget it I'll make a ponytail. Her crying about the "date" was less about wanting to be on it with Okudera, but the fact that Taki would be on a date with Okudera instead. So so so glad you guys watched this! I can proudly say it's my favorite movie.

Also it's full of stylish action and cinematically very well put together. Otherwise, pick almost ANY Ghibli movie. They are super influential in the genre and you could say they are as influential as Disney classics, but from Japan. They also usually have slightly more mature themes that are expressed in a bit more nuanced way.

If you want to dive a bit deeper into it you guys might want to look up the term "Red thread of fate", which is from east asian mythology and Your Name heavily leans into that. Not to mention how 'thread' both visually, metaphorically and literally plays several roles in the movie. I'm sure there are great blog posts out there linking it to the movie as well. I can understand where Brig is coming from (wrt how they fell in love) - personally I think the movie showed that they werent really aware that they cared about each other until they lost contact, and that it was fairly gradual until then (they were kinda like pen pals in a way). Mitsuha was visibly confused as to why she teared up at the thought of Taki going on a date, meanwhile Taki wasn't really interested in his date / former crush, even though he didnt really seem to realise it himself until it was pointed out. So I'd agree that their love blossoming is somewhat subtle, but I think the signs are there. As for other movie recommendations: Pretty much anything by Satoshi Kon - dude was an artisan. His most famous work is Perfect Blue. If you watch any of his works, please try to note his scene transitions because they are sometimes very creative. A Silent Voice, Wolf Children and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time are also all very good.

After setting up Taki on a date with Okudera, she goes to tokyo thinking that she'll meet Taki and okudera but instead meets a younger Taki who hadn't dreamt of her yet, and gave young Taki her braided cords. The Taki she's been switching with is from a time when the comet already hit itomori but she doesn't know that. Then goes back home cuts her hair, goes to the festival, comet hits, itomori gone and she ded. Taki heading home from school or work meets a weird girl in the train and gives him a braided cord along with her name. A day later, he sees the news about comet tiamat and decides to go outside to the roof to see the scenery. The feeling as though he just lost something started to grip him from that moment on. 3 years later after the comet hit, Taki, a boy from Tokyo starts dreaming of a girl from the past. After the disastrous date with okudera, he decides to meet Mitsuha but shocked at the discovery that the girl he'd been switching with is one of the 500 victims of the comet tiamat tragedy. He goes to the Shrine where mitsuhas and yotsuhas offering is and drinks mitsuhas sake. Taki and mitsuha switch places one last time. This time they both have a chance of changing the future. A future where there arent 500 victims taken by comet tiamat. Taki starts the plan then meets mitsuha, mitsuha finishes the plan and then comet hits but no mo victims. Future is changed. 5 years later, (this is where the movie starts which is also where the movie ends) Mitsuha and Taki walking out of their apartment saying something along the lines of "oh i feel like i lost something, i think this feeling gripped me when the stars fell blah blah blah" cue the music and flashback(fun fact the entire movie is a flashback) off to work they go. On the train they see each other then they started searching for each other the end. Long story short, she dreams of a future boy, he dreams of a girl from the past. They can't meet one another because of the comet. But through love manages to change the fabric of reality for the better.

2023-08-22 18:27:55 +0000 UTCThis was my second time watching this movie. I remember being so tense during the stairway scene. I desperately wanted them to turn around and acknowledge each other. I was going to RIOT if they went their separate ways. I feel like Japanese animated movies tend to have ambiguous endings (IYKYK 🥲), so it felt cathartic when there was closure! Overall, I thought the movie was good but it didn’t resonate with me as much it did with the general public. Main reason being, I wasn’t fully invested in the romance, which was a central part of the plot. I agree with Brig that it felt sudden, and that the movie could have portrayed their developing feelings better. The whole writing-in-each other’s-diaries part had potential, and it could have shown them falling for each other’s quirks/personality through that. The animation and soundtrack were what stood out to me and carried a lot of the emotions.

If you ever watch Ghibli movies, you may like to start watching with 「Princess Mononoke」(97') or 「Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind 」(84'). It has a little more action than other Ghibli movies, and I believe you would like it. Such an impressive storyline and animation, drawings, and backgrounds were all written by hand. (Hayao Miyazaki prefer that way.) Maybe「Porco Rosso」too. It is an underrated but great movie. You will see the coolest pig in the world. haha You can see it in the cinema right now. They are re-releasing it this weekend. 「Spirited Away」and 「 Hawel's Moving Castle」is great too, I love them. But just you know, it is more known or popular in the US because "Spirited Away" won international movie awards, and Disney(Disney owns Ghibli rights in the US and Canada) changed how to market Ghibli movies since then. Anyway, Hayao Miyazaki's old movie is goated. Maybe good to start the old movie directed by him. But there's another director who makes great and real movies too (Isao Takahata). I believe that you will definitely find one movie you like from Studio Ghibli since they have from kids' dreamy movies to sad and realistic movies as possible.
