It is also much darker, and although it is different from the manga, I really thought it was a great story overall.

It was really hard for me to follow, but I promise from episode 2 and onward, the pacing is phenomenal and everything mentioned in this episode will all make sense. also! edward elric’s voice actress in the sub also played hanji zoe from aot!!

I watched FMAB for the first time in 2016. I came into FMAB super skeptical and came out understanding why it is highly regarded as the top anime on myanimelist. I absolutely LOVE the themes/philosophy. I eat up shows like this.

I didn't watch it till 2011 and didn't actually revisit it till 2016 and then fell head over heels for it. I think some people are salty and don't really care for the themes of the show or the philosophy as much as others (me). I got my brother to watch it with me for the first time recently and he loved it as well.

I believe it was made as an original for FMAB and it is a good episode imo to rewatch once you finish the series. I still love it as someone who's watched the whole show 6 times now. I think they also made it based on the assumption that at the time alot of people would have watched the original 2003 anime

It's like alchemy can be looked at like a job in the military or a hospital. Some people in the medical field specialize in illnesses of the heart and others illnesses of the stomach. Or how someone in the military could be a great marksman and another could be good at explosives. There's a base sort of knowledge/training everyone has but then if they choose to they can specialize in a certain field. Ed is a the fullmetal alchemist but he can also use alchemy to mend his clothes or mess with stone structures from a building. Or he can make a metal weapon. Isaac could probably do basic alchemy but specializes in water like how mustang specializes in fire

Ive watched it 6 times now. People trying to compare it to hxh when we voted for the next show but I don't think they can be compared. They're two very different stories. Both have pros and cons but I don't think there'll be another show/story that's better than FMAB for me. I think aot has an amazing way of telling it's story but FMAB is more well rounded for me.

ATLA fans are free to attack anyone posting even a slightly negative comment and then when that person retaliates, he's the bad guy because he insulted the story and fans, and in the future shouldn't be allowed to make a joke. But those rats who insult anyone making even a slightly negative comment are free to do whatever. This comment section is hilarious. I even got attacked for trying to stop people attacking Mysterious Figure for posting a negative comment about HxH. But hey I was pretty new here and didn't know no one moderates the comments so I was just dumb trying to be nice to all the rejects telling me to shut up on almost any comment I posted. Should have just started cussing them out from the get-go. Idk why I'm writing this here. Maybe I just needed to vent my frustration of my time here. 2023-09-10 20:35:40 +0000 UTCI did, didn’t do it for me. I’m not saying the English VA’s aren’t talented or can’t convey emotions at all, just that it feels wrong and cringe for me. Can’t explain why, it’s like you can hear much clearer that the sound has been added on (even though I know it works the same). And sometimes I also believe it’s because I don’t think the dub is as good at finding voices that fits the characters. A lot of teenage characters sounds way to grown up, mostly male characters. But can be a preference as you said, I always prefer to consume movies, tv-series and anime in the original language. Maybe should add that English isn’t my first language so that might be why too. I don’t have any nostalgia towards any dub for that reason.

But it honestly comes down to preference, you guys fully watched it on dub hence why there's bias towards it. I've watched it on both, first on dub then on sub, i personally think this anime has one of the best dubs even though i pretty much watch all anime on sub and hate other dub works.

A lot of animes have great dubs (Naruto, Death Note, Fullmetal Panic, etc.

I know that the boys have made comments, but they have considered the possibility of watching One Piece and they have not called it garbage or something unbearable to watch. Even when they always make these jokes from a personal perspective, they do not attack or say anything about the people who like that, among many other things that you have said about the story and the fans. Sub sounds like it’s the actual characters talking, while dub just feels like an emotionless overlay (not every character but most of them). I get watching in dub if you have trouble reading but otherwise it’s a strong no for me. I’m rooting for sub.

Too much happens and it isn't built up. Also, maybe I'm just misremembering but I feel like there was way more goofiness in this episode compared to the rest of the show. The show gets a lot more normal with the pacing and storytelling. It's a great show, very well written, well paced, good characters, great development, does everything well, every part is at least 8/10 imo. Has great moments, has everything.

Speaking for myself, I only agreed once with a comment that told you to shut up, but it was because what you said was not even your opinion, it was another mockery of a show that you have not even seen in its entirety and many of us like. It was a completely unnecessary comment. There was no way to have an interesting conversation about it, because you were only looking to make fun of that show once again, when it's intended to be seen by the people who are interested in seeing it. I personally am not such a fan of FMAB, but I already saw it in it's entirety, even so I am open-minded to seeing it again and realizing if maybe it is better than I think. But if I say anything, it's going to be with respect, and having in mind that maybe is just not for me. I'm not going to go to every video or annuncement that the Geks guys make just to say that it's a horrible show and that it's unbearable to watch, or make jokes about it. I am not going to speak for other people who may have silenced you when you were really giving a constructive opinion. A few times I have read your comments, and I think you get to do precisely that, make the conversation more interesting. But that occasion was not one of those. I’m not gonna lie, when I watched this it was with the English dub instead of sub, and the English dub on this might be the best in all of anime. The only anime’s I think have remotely as good dub is AOT and soul eater, if you wanna put Death Note go ahead it just don’t hit for me. So I think the Gek Boys should honestly give the dub a shot for this one, just my personal opinion.

There is little to no exposition because many people watching were familiar with the story (FMAB is the second anime adaptation of the manga). The premiere was meant generate hype from existing fans by introducing some beloved characters (that would not have appeared this early on), and sprinkling in some foreshadowing. I think you guys could have benefited from watching beyond the first episode.

I agree with people that the FMAB dub is one of the best anime dubs of all time HOWEVER I don't think I would call it as good as the sub. There are definitely dub performances that I could say are "on par" with their Japanese counterparts but none are "better" and some are "so much worse" namely most of the villains. In the sub their voices feel really unique and threatening, while in the dub I cringe every time they open their mouths. That being said, on average the dub is still way better than a regular anime dub so I would personally recommend you guys do a sub vs dub at the end of the show like you did for AOT. (Plus I remember that when you guys reacted to death note in dub you said that it stopped you from talking during the show and I would definitely rather there be talking than just silence every episode.)

I love it so much, from the animation, to the voice acting, the score, the story and the characters. Surprised to see a lot of people in the comments saying this is overhyped or not their favorite, but hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion 🙂 I mean I wasn’t keen on HxH (I dropped it when I tried watching it by myself) but I’m slowly turning around to it as I watch it more with ya’ll. I’m excited to hear YOUR opinions on FMAB. I personally watched this anime dub, I RARELY like dub but this anime has an amazing dub. If you don’t choose dub though it’s still a win for me because I haven’t seen it sub so I’ll get to experience it in a new way with you guys! Don’t feel like you need to follow every detail after episode 1. Episode 1 is technically not in the manga, it’s just a refresher/teaser for the fans because brotherhood is a reboot of the original full metal alchemist anime.

One Piece is one of the best written stories ever, in a league of its own, more comparable to other great fantasy stories like Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings than any anime or manga. Anime does have pacing issues after 500, but the voice acting and ost are goated. Anyways, I've already said all I need about OP in other comments. My point is that all the shows I listed I enjoyed more than FMAB which makes them better to me. I don't care how well written a show is if it's on a topic I don't like. There are plenty of romances that are written well, but you won't catch me watching them and ranking them high because I generally don't enjoy romance stories. FMAB is well rounded but it's not extraordinary in anything.

I like Naruto and One Piece more then FMAB, but FMAB is definitely better then them both. Naruto has tons of poor writing and half the show is filler. One Piece has absurdly awful pacing and the anime adaptation is pretty mediocre overall. The story and characters are great, but that can only do so much when Toei is adapting 12 pages of manga per episode for 500 episodes in a row. FMAB really has no big issues like that. The most anyone can say about it is that they don't personally love it or they can nitpick small things. The show overall is amazing in every way when it comes to writing, characters, storyline etc. and the adaptation itself is amazing when it comes to voice acting, music, animation. It really doesn't get any better then this show, but I still wouldn't personally put it in my top 5 because there are just shows I like way more that I don't necessarily think are better.

If there are fans of FMAB that review bomb other shows, there are fans of other shows that review bomb FMAB. The reason FMAB is in the high spot it's in is because, it does actually have a lot of fans. This is probably in large part to a lot of people growing up with the original FMA series when they only had access to the few anime they knew from what aired on CN/Toonami/AdultSwim and this being regularly aired on AdultSwim for 6 straight years over and over until FMAB then premiered there. If something like Monster had gotten that level of exposure it would also probably have a much larger presence in anime conversations and top lists, regardless of what you think of the show, exposure just makes a huge difference. The fact that so many people talk about the FMA/FMAB dubs is further proof of this, because the dub got massive exposure.

There is a Fullmetal Alchemist (non Brotherhood) series that came out years earlier that caught up to the manga and so they ended up going with a completely unique plot path about halfway through that is different from the manga, that then had a season finale and a followup movie. The series was so popular that they years later made Brotherhood which redid the entire anime but to follow the entire plot of the manga. This first episode contains a ton of info because it's both a refresher for people who watched the original series but also teases things that were not in the original anime and relate the later plot that was previously only in the manga.
