2023-09-21 21:39:33 +0000 UTC@rosa_gris sure but if he's able to see his father as just a hunter he's interested in, and not as his father, then why is this different for his mother? Wouldn't he be curious if his mother too was a hunter? Cuz I am at least lol

2023-09-20 02:56:31 +0000 UTC@ABC, thank you for pointing it out! That did go over my head and I thought of the first comment as more of a logical answer (that I don’t agree with) to the question why Gon was obsessed w/ Ging given the former has never met the latter before. I didn’t even relate it with the biological mom and that’s where I confused myself but I see your point more now.
C E.
2023-09-20 02:14:57 +0000 UTCI would like to preface that this is an analysis on Gon’s character and not my opinion on whether his actions are right/wrong: @kiiturii I do remember what happens next. [NEXT EPISODE SPOILERS] Gon stops the tape and Killua asks him if he’s sure. Gon reiterates he doesn’t want to know, and that Mito is his (only) mother. I think you’re seeing it as a betrayal, only if Mito knows that Gon is interested in his birth mother. However to Gon, finding out more about his birth mother (behind Mito’s back) is still a betrayal to her. In doing so, it would be like acknowledging that Mito isn’t his only mother. I would like emphasise that is what GON thinks, before my comment gets misinterpreted. You’re thinking there’s no strings attached since Ging is freely offering this information and Mito doesn’t need to know. However, it will lie on Gon’s conscience. I think we’ll just have to agree to disagree, even though I don’t really know what we’re disagreeing on. I think we all agree that Gon is fkn weird. I think we just have different interpretations/expectations for his character. Gon’s behaviour here does not reflect how people often react, but I think it’s very true to his character. Anyway, I love engaging in HxH discourse, so I appreciate everyone’s replies here. It has been fun reading them.

2023-09-20 01:39:12 +0000 UTC@C E. > "that he feels like asking questions about his biological mother would be like a betrayal to Mito. " I do get this, but it isn't just that he doesn't want to ask Mito about her, it's that even when Gon has the chance to learn about her mother with literally no strings attached, he decides not to. You'll see it in the next episode since you might've forgotten about it (though it's pretty clear you're not the only one)
kiiturii
2023-09-19 23:59:56 +0000 UTCRead the original comment and then the first reply. OP finds it weird that Gon is apathetic towards his bio mom, and the first reply with the most likes is heavily implying that because Gon has a mother figure, he obviously has no interest in his bio mom. That's what I was disagreeing with. I also don't think Gon is pursuing Ging because he is curious about a father figure. I think you answered OP's implied question, that Gon is mostly apathetic towards both his parents and is actually interested in being a hunter because he wants to see what's so good about being a hunter that even a father would abandon his child to pursue being a hunter, instead of pursuing Ging for the sake of getting a familial connection.
ABC
2023-09-19 23:39:12 +0000 UTCFrom what I understood, people have been saying that in reiteration to what Gon had just literally said here - that he feels like asking questions about his biological mother would be like a betrayal to Mito. I don’t think anyone here is agreeing w/ what he said; it’s just that they get it from Gon’s POV but that doesn’t mean it’s also theirs. I think you’ve been interpreting the comments differently because I’ve been scanning them and never thought that people mean it as what you quoted. They were saying it as facts that came from Gon’s mouth and interpreted it from Gon’s character. No one here is justifying Gon’s reaction as morally just or did I skip a comment expressing or implying so because I’m not sure where this came from?
C E.
2023-09-19 22:51:00 +0000 UTCI understand Gon's character. What I was disagreeing with was people saying, "Gon has a mother figure or Gon considers Mito his mom so obviously he has no interest in his bio mom." All I'm saying is that loving your adoptive mom and being interested in your bio mom aren't mutually exclusive. You can both love your adoptive mom and be curious about your bio mom. If anyone considers that a betrayal, then they are in the wrong.

2023-09-19 12:59:09 +0000 UTC- and he would say that with a smile and without an ounce of resentment. Unhinged Gon should really be a whole study because the amount of times I did double takes at his reactions/responses is way too many. 😆
C E.
2023-09-19 10:24:49 +0000 UTCI don’t know if your comment is in response to mine, but I would like to clarify a few things. I don’t think anyone is saying that Gon should be apathetic towards his birth mother. In fact, there are so many discussions in the HxH community around this topic BECAUSE a lot of us recognise that Gon’s behaviour and thought process IS abnormal. My comment not saying that “it’s moral” for Gon to not acknowledge his birth mother at all. I was just explaining why he doesn’t. My casual mention of Gon’s morality was not related to this Gon/Mito discourse, but it was more-so alluding to Gon’s abnormal way of thinking that extends to other topics (which I can’t get into because spoilers). Basically, I’m saying that we can’t fathom Gon as a character if we try to look at it from a normal person’s perspective. It’s not normal to have completely apathy, and yes you’re right that is messed up. When you do deep dive into Gon’s character, you start to understand his indifference (towards his birth mother, and other things..). I can do a whole analysis on Gon Freecss but it would be full of spoilers and too much for a Patreon comment. As for the circumstances of his birth, Gon doesn’t really care about that. He didn’t even care that Ging abandoned him. He’s more interested in finding out what makes being a Hunter so great. So his motivation for finding Ging and asking him his reasons for abandoning him is not about “why did he abandon me :(“; it’s more about “wow this guy abandoned his own child to pursue his dream of becoming a Hunter :D I wonder what makes Hunters so great for him to have done such a selfish thing”.

2023-09-19 03:08:16 +0000 UTC@ABC yeah agreed, if he didn't care about either of his bio parents I'd get it a bit more, but ig I'll just write it off as Gon being a bit of a dumb kid still still hope we get more of the mom side of things later on for context as well, would be cool
kiiturii
2023-09-19 02:31:42 +0000 UTCGon recognizing Mito as his mom shouldn't make him apathetic towards his bio mom. I guess it could be Gon's personality, but people are saying it like it's the most obvious thing when it's not. Considering your adopting parent as a parent doesn't just automatically make a person apathetic towards their bio parents, and if it does, then that person isn't morally right unless he knows for a fact that the bio parents didn't care about him and abandoned him. In this case, Gon has no idea if his mom abandoned him or if some other circumstances, maybe out of his bio mom's control, led to Ging taking him away. People are making it sound like Gon being apathetic about his bio mom because he likes Mito is moral and just when it's really not. Gon being afraid to betray Mito is a betrayal toward his bio mom. If his mom voluntarily abandoned him, then that's fine, but if she didn't? Gon doesn't know so it's pretty messed up.

2023-09-18 07:06:26 +0000 UTCI have the same take as @rosa_gris, Gon already recognized Mito as his Mom so it feels like a betray. One more point *SPOILER* is that in the 2011 version they deleted the scene with Kite in episode 1, which is actually very important in my opinion. He inspired Gon to be a Hunter and made Gon adore Ging.

2023-09-18 01:07:12 +0000 UTCUsually people want to find their birth parents because of a natural curiosity and/or they long for a familial connection that don’t already have in their life. As C E has mentioned, Mito already satisfies the latter. To Gon, Mito IS his mother and any mention of his birth mother seems like a betrayal to her. [Minor spoilers? for the rest of the anime] Another thing to consider is that, Gon has grown up hearing about Ging’s amazing feats from the people on Whale Island. Ging has become more like an idol figure than a parental figure to Gon, whereas his birth mother is neither of those things. She is nobody to him. He has nothing to gain from finding her. This last point is important because it explains Gon’s way of thinking beyond this topic (e.g. his morality) and a lot of his actions later on in the story. It doesn’t make sense as a viewer because his way of thinking differs from the norm.
rosa_gris
2023-09-18 00:48:05 +0000 UTCthat makes more sense tbf, I guess I understand why he wants to find Ging, but how little he cares about his mom still feels a bit strange to me (biggest example of this is in the following episode). I get it from Gons perspective more now but from a viewer perspective it's a bit confusing why they went this route still. Hope she becomes more of a thing in the manga or something

2023-09-17 23:55:48 +0000 UTCI think Gon is more obsessed on the Hunter Ging than the Ging that is his dad, if that makes sense. In the hunter exam, he’s been telling that his purpose as to why he took it up was to see what is so great about being a hunter that his supposed father left him for. Gon is secure w/ Mito being his parent figure (mother and/or father) and I do think he sees Ging as an enigma and made it a purpose to figure him out so it kind of narrows down on the why.
C E.
2023-09-17 23:25:37 +0000 UTCcan you explain it to me then? I've mentioned this same thing before but I've never been met with so much resistance about it lol, usually people agree that it's feels a bit weird so I'm curious why you feel so strongly that I'm wrong about this
kiiturii
2023-09-17 21:44:16 +0000 UTCThen we can all relate to killua about the questions he asks himself “who am I?”, “what am I going to do?”. These are questions we can ask ourselves at any stage of our lives. This is why he is so admiring of Gon who constantly knows what he wants to do and has a real goal. So in a way meeting Gon is the best thing that could happen to him.
devakira
2023-09-17 21:28:53 +0000 UTCHis entire environment destined him to become an assassin. But he managed to find freedom but no purpose yet, so one of his fears is to find no purpose and to prove his family right, that his only destiny is to become an assassin. (that's the reason why his father said he will come back home, because he thinks he won't find any purpose and for him killua is destined to become a killer, he raised him like that ).
devakira
2023-09-17 21:28:21 +0000 UTCI really like this last episode (37) and it's nice that you liked it too because unfortunately most of the other reactors find it boring. It doesn't take constant fighting and lots of action for it to be a good episode. And it feels good, something calmer and deeper after all the fighting. What I particularly like is seeing the beauty of their friendship, also their discussion about their families, their plans, their dreams and finally the parallels between Gon and Killua's childhood. Gon had a childhood of freedom, a healthy "family", he received healthy love,... While Killua grew up in an unhealthy family, he received no love or else a twisted and toxic love , he was locked up, tortured and without any freedom.

2023-09-17 21:26:33 +0000 UTCidk how you don't understand the complexity of Gon's reaction when you have Misato as a pfp which is a very layered character

After all even without Nen he stabbed his mom and escaped lol But there’s a theory Killua was supposed to learn Nen at HA when he was 6, that’s why Silva sent him there, but Killua left before he went to the 200th floor.
