Don't agree on the painted lady being completely filler,it shows how the war also negatively affects the people of the fire nation. And also the character beat for Katara helping anyone who is in need,even if they are fire nation citizens. Still not a great episode but I don't think it's completely filler. Some people also argue that the Headband is filler,which I disagree with for similar reasons(worldbuilding).

I am so glad you guys reacted to these two episodes back-to-back, because I think they pair really well together. The Storm provides an introspective look into Aang and Zuko — their insecurities, weight of their responsibilities. There’s a lot of parallels to drawn there. It also sets up the dynamic between the two from this point on, and makes their one-sided conversation in the forest much more poignant. It’s kind of wild how the writers decided to put these episodes after an episode like The Great Divide. Truly a disservice to the show.

The best episodes in almost any show are the ones that use parallel writing to compare 2 characters or situations that seem very different on the surface. The storm is one of several episodes that display this effect in all its epicness. The Avatar and the Firelord is one of my favorite episodes in season 3 for this reason!

I think this episode gives the silliness of the first few of the show a lot more context. Yeah it was Nickelodeon and they probably had to be that way to sell the show, but it makes sense in that Aang had JUST run away from being the Avatar. He must've been in complete denial and delusion.
