This can be an ability that was born from extreme stress due to where they might have been born in, to a unique genetic reason. Specialists are also the only ones who are capable of learning all other categories but this also means they are the only ones who have the lowest efficiency/compatibility with Enhancement (being 40% efficiency). Which means their pure physical power and defences are entirely lacking. ---- For example, a specialist ability could be - being able to summon talking animals who can tell you the coming weather of a given location. The type of animal changes depending on what the weather will be. (Basically very specific and very random ability- that would be useful to a person living in a location with catastrophic weather and this was just an ability they naturally came up with growing up there) ---

Specialists are simply people that can use nen in ways that other categories dont explain. It could literally be anything. Brigg was just probably thinking of a future event that lead him to his conclusion but its not like that. Not necessarily. Thats only one of the possibilities. Specialist is the mystery category.

They can use abilities from other categories to some extent. Setting up the power system in this way allows for Togashi (the author) to come up with creative powers/abilities that still operate under already established rules.

Transmutation actually allows the user to change the qualities of their aura, i.e. their aura can mimic the properties of other substances/materials. For example, Hisoka’s aura mimics the properties of rubber and gum (i.e. elasticity, stickiness), but it doesn’t actually become rubber nor gum (which would be Conjuration). Transmutation has nothing to do with altering an object’s qualities; only the user’s own aura. I think this was a mistranslation. However every specialist can learn all categories, just like an enhancer can learn a conjurer ability. (80%>60%>40%) Its just a category which is very rare and "special" and which isnt so easy to categorize like the other.

You fight for glory as well as for a chance to defeat a floor master and take their spot. 2. Regarding Nen categories FOR BATTLES (yeah, cause a lot of people tend to forget that you can develop you Nen for uses other than fighting). Think of it as each one representing a different video game fighter archetype with different stats or fighting styles, but also, like Carter said, remember that in the end, it all comes down to the present situation and characters abilities. While it is possible to make an overall power ranking regarding HxH characters, you'll quickly find that it is a pretty limited way to determine who will win a battle. You can defeat A and lose to B even though B lost to A, because every battle has different circumstances and Togashi is one of the few who takes this variant into consideration when writing his fights. 3. Regarding physical ability. They absolutely play a role in battle but even within Nen abilities. Nen is incredibly powerful and you need to be strong enough if only to be able to yield it. Ren training in particular also serves as a physical reinforcement. So yeah, physical strength can or not be the primary weapon of some Nen users but there is definitely a basic standard to have if you want to survive, and also serves as an advantage if you train it. Since I guess you guys are skipping the opening of every episode where the narrator explain every type, I'll just leave what he says here: There are 6 distinct categories of Nen users. Enhencer. Enhencers are able to strengthen various objects' effectiveness. (Example Gon and Wing) Transmuter. Transmuters can use their aura to alter objects' qualities. (Example Killua and Hisoka) Conjurer. Somewhat akin to Transmuters, Conjurers are able to manifest their aura. (Example Kurapika) Emitter. Emitters can propel their aura like projectiles. (we haven't met an emitter yet) Manipulator. Manipulators can use their auras to control objects and creatures. (Example, the girl that controls people by kissing) Specialist. Specialist are those with rare abilities that don't fit in the other five clases. (again, we haven't met anyone on this type yet). Hope that helps somehow 😅
