Particularly the Liore episodes and the Nina episodes. The rest of FMAB is goated though (no hate to the people who prefer the first anime, it’s all just personal preferences at the end of the day)

So for the first episodes shou is basicly just the person they live with and he helps them study alchemy. This makes the reveal so much more shocking and surprising as it comes for someone who you thought was going to be a main stay background character like mustang, armstrong, and hughes

The humor of this show is classic shounen (not my favorite), but at least the Japanese VAs do it well and hence is tolerable. If I’m not mistaken, anime humor is not the Studio Geks strong suit, so I’m wondering how they will receive the humor in this show in dub. Another point to the sub vs. dub debate- I agree that there are some very good dub VAs, but the OVERALL sub acting is much better than the overall dub voice acting, hence the better overall experience.

My main gripe, I guess, is that they seem to prefer the sub yet are watching the dub. If they liked the dub more then all the power to them. I agree with (a lot) of the comments that this anime is one of the better dub experiences, while the sub offers the best FMAB experience. Watch whichever version you guys prefer! - but please keep the subtitles on regardless. Also if you keep watching the dub, do you think it's possible to switch to a version with cleaner subtitles? I do agree that Eds dub voice is kinda jarring, especially when yelling. It is what it is. I think the voice actors otherwise does a great job, however the lines themselves tend to sound a bit unnatural. Though that is a common dub issue and I guess it is hard to avoid (to my knowledge I can only think of the Steins;Gate and Cowboy Bebop dubs doing well in this regard). Regarding the Silent Voice Ueno vs Kawai debate thrown in there, I will say that on my first watch I thought Ueno was the biggest POS by a wide margin, but on my second and third watch I softened ever so slightly on Ueno whilst realising how despicable Kawai is, and yes I now think she is the worse of the two (I could probably write and entire essay on this but I will hold it in :D). I am in no way defending Ueno, she is still a POS, I just think Kawai is worse.

I think you guys should switch back to sub and watch an anime that is objectively better in dub as your first dub experience, like Dragon ball Z for example. There is no point getting a worse experience of an amazing show just for the sake of saying you did an anime in dub. There are plenty of animes where the dub is better, save the first run through of dub for one of them.

Both dub and sub are top notch and I’m so grateful that the majority of the sub preferers are being so kind about it all, you guys rock. As someone who’s studying linguistics and is deep into the world of translations I think it’s too easy to get caught up in what the best way to experience a story is. A lot of people refuse to watch/read/listen to anything outside of their native language which really is a huge shame. I’m native English speaking but some of my favourite songs are French or Ukrainian or who knows what. But I also think there is a widespread lack of respect for translators. Especially for something like Japanese to English, it’s an insanely difficult task. People will hate on translations while forgetting someone slaves over them to try and preserve as much meaning as possible. This definitely extends to voice actors who give their all to a performance just to be called bad because they had hard material to work with. It’s a monumental task to work with translated material and get all the meaning out even as just the actor. Appreciate the hard work everyone put in to get this into English. Even if it’s not perfect remember it’s easier to catch flaws in your native language and that there’s flaws even in the native one. That’s the fun of it all, none of its perfect but it’s still special no matter how you experience it

Some people are probably so used to sub which immerses them more that dub makes them cringe so I can understand how it could ruin the show for them

I've watched the entire show in both sub and dub and the former is far superior in terms of the passion and realism that the voice actors brought. But it's still the best anime dub I've ever seen, only the experience is lesser than if one were to watch it in sub.

Regardless of the poll, they chose the Dub, which means they kind of wasted our time and effort. I voted Dub for this show because I only saw this in Dud before. But I guess I'll give myself a chance to watch in the Sub. You can definitely imagine this comment would have been a crazy hater comment of the frame if they had chosen Sub. haha

2023-09-25 01:54:59 +0000 UTCHonestly at a certain point it's not even about how good the actors are, the dialogue and the way it's crafted is often so npc-like and very unnatural, the pacing of the dialogue too. And this happens purely because it's tranlsated from another language, they have to match the japanese lip flaps into english dialogue so it often has to be crafted in an unnatural way so it can be lip synced properly

I'm currently on episode 32 and sooo good, cannot wait for your reactions!!
