People are primarily here to watch first-time reactions -- constantly distracting his friends with (clearly incorrect) observations like matching-hair-and-eyes, obviously diminishes the experience for everyone involved, including his friends.

The reasons I like their works are that they take me back to my childhood and warm my heart after watching them. It's a masterpiece from the good old days like Hunter×Hunter and Fullmetal Alchemist.

But yes, Spirited Away is one of the most known and sold worldwide for Studio Ghibli. One of the reasons that it got top-grossing in Japan and Awarded for AA in the US, besides being a great movie, is that, in the US, editor changed behavior how to treat the Ghibli movie and put a lot more effort into marketing, unlike before Spirited Away. There's an unresected drama that went down between Weinstein and Hayao Miyazaki (which I will say is "a samurai sword contract") when Princess Mononoke was out in America. Long story short, film distributor failed and changed behavior when Spited Away was out. And, of course, most of the Ghibli movies are masterpieces; when marketing is right, and the movie wasn't stupidly cut like before, it gets a big hit and gets attention. This is actually a big reason why Ghibli was finally nominated for AA that year. Also, the fact that Hayao Miyazaki's movie was nominated and won the Academy Awards after years of genius work brought more Japanese people to the Cinema, making this movie the number-one spot for 20 years until Demon Slayer beat it. But again, yes. It is a great movie and one of the most worldwide successful movie for them!

Spirited Away remained the top grossing anime movie of all time since 2001 ($395.8 million) until it was beat out by Demon Slayer ($507.1 million) in 2021. Spirited Away also won an Academy Award for "Best Animated Feature" in 2003.

It's a masterpiece. It's a pretty spicy first choice, though! Also, the director is Isao Takahata, so I wished the first one would have been the movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Anyhow, hope they enjoy the first experience anyway, regardless of whichever movie they choose! Also, I am looking forward to seeing Princess Mononoke here one day, watching with them and you @Mia! Fingers crossed.

But why don't you try the Ghibli Classics of masterpieces for the first experience? Like Nausicaa of the valley of the wind, Castle in the Sky, or Princess Mononoke? I believe that those are more your style and the best way to introduce to Ghibli.
