Grave. .Of. .The. .Fireflies

This was so moving we literally couldn't handle. Luckily we watched this in our Juicy Tier Watch party so we were all in it together🥹

Comments

What did he said, i didn’t catch it

Chalène

Exactly. Already desensitised to suffering children caused by wars. Seen so many dead, online. I was fully aware while watching that to me the kids in this story felt like statistics or numbers0️⃣1️⃣1️⃣0️⃣1️⃣. On top of that; I couldn’t relate at all, because I don’t have siblings. I would’ve been able to get moved if it was about 2 friends that were roughly the same age.

Jem de Jager

Didn’t make you cry? Sure. but didn’t MOVE you?? You felt zero sympathy for these two children who are suffering? Absolutely wild

Ashton Wizard

i thought that aircraft was about to bomb that cave place where Setsuko was sleeping

Ron Jackson Jr

far out i teared up

Ron Jackson Jr

This movie didn’t move me at all. Doesn’t change the fact it portrays the reality of war. Duh. “Your name” did make me tear me up.

Jem de Jager

I like the title of this film. The kanji used in the title of this film has a twist. The kanji for the insect firefly is "蛍(hotaru)", but the title of this film has been changed to "火垂る(hotaru)". "火垂る(hotaru)" means "fire falls". I think it's a great title, as it shows the war fire in the film, the fragility of setuko's life and the fleeting happiness in the midst of war. Thank you for watching a great film. From Japan with love.

N

Man, that is the only movie, that hits harder everytime i watch it...

Lynn

Great. You may want to maybe watch this great classic Rurouni Kenshin tv show and movie When wind rises. ;)

skystrawberry

@3:08 why did Cannon say that? and since when did was he a Lost fan?@_@!?!? That just threw me for a loop. Thought Lost would be well...lost to the now crowd given nobody talks about it. He's a fan, wow. My respect went up for him

Ronen

0:33 Did Jackson really engage? or Brig just joking

BipolarKitten

Bro I was sobbing with u guys the whole time😭😭😭 Anyways thank u for the sick reactions as always guys❤️❤️❤️ Now u should def watch some heart warming ghibli movies. Howl’s moving castle is my go to choice for that one. It’s melancholic and warms ur heart.

Stinky socks

Spirited Away!!!

The director and screenwriter of "Grave of the Fireflies" is Isao Takahata. (Akiyoshi Nosaka wrote the original story.) Since Hayao Miyazaki wasn't involved in this movie, that quote/message must be from Takahata. Director Hayao Miyazaki was making "My Neighbor Totoro" at the same time Takahata was making "Grave of the Fireflies," and those two movies were aired in the Cinema together at the time. Unfortunately, Director Takahata has passed away, but these two Ghibli masters were truly great rivals and comrades in the film industry, creating completely different works, one for reality and one for fantasy. I love both of their pieces. I'm glad it reached people overseas.

Some other movie suggestions: Wolf Children, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Mell

This movie messed me up. I'm visiting my lil siblings tomorrow damn. Why so sad? But this is happening right now to those Palestinian kids and everywhere else. Makes you think. We can't see how bad they are suffering. This film forces us to watch it

Can’t touch this Stone

日本からのコメント失礼します。 この映画の作者である宮崎駿はこの映画で生きることを諦めないでほしいということを伝えたかったそうです。 Excuse my comment from Japan. The film's creator, Hayao Miyazaki, wanted to use this film to tell people not to give up on life.

豊田将司

I’m going to go hold my one year old now…that was BRUTAL. What the heck! 😓

Alexis Hunting

I forgot to comment this last time but rewatching this reaction while I am relaxed, it’s so cute to see these guys’ big brother instincts kicking in. One moment, they were trying to figure out if Setsuko’s wearing a diaper, then their expressions changed when they saw her rashes. 🥰

Joie Dianzon

i vote for princess mononoke as well. just to give you some background without spoiling, the theme for the movie Princess Mononoke are Environment, sexuality and disability, development vs preservation, loss of innocence, duality, non-duality, individualism and comformity.

corLeonis

Princess mononoke for next ghibli movie please...

corLeonis

Yes Mia!!!!

nans

Cant turn up with swollen eyes 👀 I got an emotional and weak heart 🥺

IAMONSTRISM Diaz

off from work for a movie is crazy ngl lmao

kiiturii

think the rashes mean something, I'm not medically educated so don't even know what, but it's definitely hinting towards it not being from malnutrition only.. The doctor also said "she's malnurished, hence the diarrhea" didn't even bother with the rashes.

kiiturii

Next time you guys want to ask us about which movie to watch would you please do an actual POLL so we can see the results accurately.

Mysterious Figure

yeah watching this the second time feels even worse... but beautiful movie. War is so horrible and everything going on now... just sad

Emily

I'm with Cannon - I've only seen this movie twice and I needed years in between viewings. It's such a difficult watch.

Teaq

This movie is so heartbreaking but such a wonderful piece of art. This is definitely the most heartbreaking Studio Ghibli movie. I'm so excited for you to watch the rest of the movies though. They each have wonderful messages as well, but in more fantastical and uplifting settings.

ShadowCat

I was depressed for a week when I watched this the first time. And I was alone when I watched it so I cried buckets

anotherpatronmember

I watched this movie for the first time in my college film class and normally we would take like 20 minutes and talk after but the whole class was SILENT. First time seeing a group of 50 adults ugly crying. lol

Daisy

everything in this comment is true!

Ashley

Go off Mia 🇵🇸

Taha Faiq

Not sure if yall noticed. In addition to the food shortage, aunt didn't give them rice but only soup at 32:40. Cousin girl and Seita noticed it, and that's why they had weird face, and that's why those kids were always hungry. What Cannon said about the aunt was right. And as Brig said, it doesn't excuse or make it any better but she was on the mind about her and her family's survival in a war where they don't know how long it will last(Her husband is off to war so he might be dead in the moment too). But also couldn't completely evil and kick those two out but couldn't help to be frustrated and mean. That's just the reality of what can possibly happen in some people. It is a Straight-up realistic tragedy. An absolutely beautiful movie.

Summer

man…

Sithy

My heart can't handle watching the whole thing again I'm gonna wait for the youtube release

Chris7o

Ghibli doesn't like to hire professional VO artists because Hayao Miyazaki believes that they are making movies, not animation. So they need realness in it. They use screen actors or amateur/no VO experience people but not professional VO actors. The VO of Setsuko was a 5-year-old girl back then who did VO for the first time. Such a GOAT! I agree with Geks! This is the best/one-of-a-kind movie people need to watch, and I love it—such a beautiful, phenomenal, and impactful movie. But yes, this is too sad to be my favorite, as much as I wish I could make it. I've watched this movie time to time since I was 7 years old, and with my age growing, I cry every time, experiencing the perspective of all different characters. Don't worry, guys. The rest of Ghibli's movies also have messages people should be aware of but deliver them with different vibes. I highly recommend Princess Mononoke, which has it all, in my opinion. But seriously, all Ghibli movies are GOAT!!(Except Tales from Earthsea.)

Lily

That was so hard to rewatch. I predict swollen eyes tomorrow . I’m taking an off from work, I can’t

IAMONSTRISM Diaz

every time I watch this movie I cry like a bitch...I only watched it 2 times I am not doing it anymore 😭 I rewatched it because of you guys

Bibi

yall gotta watch a happy movie next i cant take any more of the depression movies😭 this was my first time watching and i dont think ill ever watch that again. you guys should watch howls moving castle, spirited away, princess mononoke or for ultimate happiness try my neighbour totoro

leah

I think the reason why Setsuko was the first to get sick and pass - I've been speculating that maybe she had diabetes? Her symptoms sound right, and I think Seita was trying to get sugar in particular because he knew she needed it...? What a tough movie to watch lol and I've seen it like 4 times now and it NEVER gets any easier!!

Cat Stiny

The one who directed this movie is Isao Takahata, unfortunately he passed away. He directed "The Grave of the Fireflies", "Pompoko", "The Tale of Princess Kaguya",etc... And the one you talked about is Hayao Miyazaki. These animated movies are quite well known: "Princess Mononoke ", "The Castle in the Sky", "Howl's Moving Castle", "Spirited Away",... Including "The Boy and the Heron" his latest film which is currently being released. Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki were very good friends. They are among the founders of Studio Ghibli.

devakira

One of the best movies ever made probably! Never want to watch it again!

NikoCat11

Even with the little joyful moments of the two, you can’t help but feel a sense of dread for what’s coming. Really tragic through and through. Second time watching this and I’m glad at the ending bit because I laughed a little - really, there’s something about being sad alone vs. being sad with other people. 🥲 On a different note, there’s a running joke that Miyazaki has been coming out of retirement too many times that he finally got banned from Studio Ghibli. lol. Let the man cook and just give him his cigarette breaks. 😂 And if you ever plan to watch “The Boy and The Heron,” hope you’ll check out first the earlier movies before that. :) Thanks for the uploads!

C E.

Ive never watched this movie and i should have listened to the comments bc why am i starting my day off watching this movie🥲

Pavlo

Preach! What a timing to watch this sadly with what's going on around the world right now.

neko

Second that. Best Ghibli movie

Mia Malvik

Watch Princess Mononoke next please. It has infinite rewatchability

PepsiMan

Naruto is simply better

Brig Andrus

The fact that this stuff is happening right now is absolute facts, although I don't agree that there's nothing you can do. Staying educated about it, learning the history of the conflict and using it when you vote, and using it to educate others is extremely important. The public opinion does really matter in these cases, because it's not a regular war. The gaza strip, which is roughly the size of east london and one of the most densely populated places in the world,(they're under occupation by Israel) has been hit with 12 000 tons of explosives, equal to the power of the nuclear bomb in Hiroshima, in just two weeks. Around 7000 palestinians have died, 3000 of them are children. 1600 are estimated to be buried under the rubble, some alive and waiting for help that won't come. Meanwhile you have western world leaders like Joe Biden say on live TV that there's no proof of the casualties, as he funds Israel 6 billion in weapons for their bombing campaign and vocally expresses his support of Israels "self defense". Only 100 million went to medical aid in gaza, which is downright laughable. Excuse the Ted talk lmao, I will literally talk about this at any moment I can 😤 Great reaction, had fun crying with you again lol. Yall are the best

Mia Malvik

This is me too, I need a pick me up.

Turquoisedaze

Spit on your grave is a HORRIBLE movie (the depiction and duration of SA is putrid)

Pavlo

Man 😢

Cookie

It’s still so painful to watch, after so many years. The thing is in the midst of war, the civilians are the ones who suffer the most. My countrymen (Philippines) are actually thankful for the US fighters (my grandmother worked for them, driving the tank that sends supplies for the soldiers) because the Japanese really were brutal during that time, but this is also the other side of their story, which needs to be told. BTW, the original movie is a live action, from a long time ago.

Joie Dianzon

You should watch a happy uplifting movie next time.

JT

What a goated movie and a goated reaction. HAHAHAHAHAA you guys are right, starting my day with that movie would've ruined me. Man what a ride. It's one of my top sad movies for a reason.

⊰𝐝⊱⊰𝐚⊱⊰𝐧⊱⊰𝐚⊱

This is my third time watching this movie. I’m not okay🙂

Frida BØ

H.X.H today?

ahmed raad

I love one piece but I get the hesitation, there's too many tropy moments tbh

FURsona

i think they might watch it when they finish fmab or hxh. Either way i know they’ll get to it eventually

Joydan Bri’an

Oh God, I don't know if I'll watch this, I had enough depression with A silent voice lol I guess I'll give it a try later on

Ale

Hopefully Spirited Away is next!

Poragami

Tbf, detective conan has more episodes and the world building is utter dogshit lmao. Most arcs in One Piece are incredible and you will not waste ur time with any of them, so all this "one piece is too long" argument is kinda irrelevant

Poragami

I'll never forget when I first watched this. Way back in 2003 and my dad and I thought we were watching one of those "Japanimation" shows on Starz at my grandma's house. It was the first and only time I've ever seen my dad cry.

Lexi Browning

they should watch haikyuu tbh

FURsona

just finished watching the video and I gotta be at work by 5 this morning. no regrets thou need that hour of sleep to recover from that

Marissa

If there wasn’t amazing world building in a series where I could watch 2 episodes a week for an ENTIRE DECADE and not even be finished I’d be pretty disappointed to be fair

Jiggy

Btw Cannon McDonald's so understandable after that 🥲

Audreyldo

it's my favorite movie, so painful but so beautiful... the music, the drawings. a masterpiece, i can watch it 10 times that i would still cry🥹

Audreyldo

Brig having that cannon video in the beginning on repeat is hilarious to me lmao

Jiggy

This is the second time I watched this movie and it made me cry once more. I’m officially done with this movie.

Silvana Salinas

Commenting before watching the movie, because i know i'm not gonna be able to afterwards. Brig is soooo bias, saying "Naruto is the best" - "you're saying that because you haven't seen it" while goofing on One Piece EVEN THO they haven't seen peak peak fiction, quite literally the best world building in anime, either. Kinda dumb. Anyways, happy crying.

Poragami

Glad you guys watched this one. Never gonna forget it now, this one sticks around for good

Vernus

imma have to rewatch some haikyuu to lift my mood

Joydan Bri’an

I’m 55 min into the movie and I’m deciding if I should quit watching ☹️ war movies are always so hard to get through no matter how many i’ve seen

Joydan Bri’an

the first and last time I watched this movie was when I was 12. Twenty minutes in and I'm already a mess 🥲 The whole thing is sheer pain but also very beautiful

april 🍏

I will never forget this movie. It was the first movie and the first thing I cried to on tv. I was so young when I watched it I didn’t recognize why I felt like bursting out

Kim555

“The best movie I never want to watch again.”

olivia

ngl, i voted for this just to see yall cry

JackLover19

I watched this once in middle school and never recovered from it. Literally still have vivid scenes embedded in my head. But for you guys.. I’ll watch it again. 🥺
