Just by reading your comment, I remembered the scene and cringed hard. Ed in the sub sounds like a fighter, a challenger, someone who's making the promise of a lifetime. Which fits the scene. He just forced open a door that should not open, just to make this promise. Ed in the dub sounds like a kid roleplaying this scene with their friends in a treehouse during summer. It's not even close. It's so bad that I feel sorry for those that have only consumed this anime dubbed and nostalgia doesn't let them realize that the dub of the main character is very far from good.
