They're very complicated and very real characters, they're not perfect beings who always make the objectively correct decision. Both of them have the weight of the world on them for different reasons, both of them crack under that pressure sometimes, and both of them lash out. Both of them are traumatized kids. I've been binging these reactions, and the girls are both so critical of both of them.

Put simply, yes, Iroh was heir to the throne and Azulon was going to honor their tradition however some key points happen that changes everything. One of them was already stated in season 1 (Ozai should know the pain of losing a first born son)

Additionally, he just had a near death experience and within minutes, after waking up from a coma (I guess), they told him the world thinks he is dead. The shock was real and Aang needed the time to go through his emotions and process them - which is completely normal. And Team Avatar and especially Katara did understand him. That’s one of the reasons why I love Avatar, because you can actually relate to the characters and how they deal with emotions, feelings and behaviour in different situations

The S2 finale had a *lot* more buildup and was the end of an entire story arc spanning over half the season (beginning with The Library). The S2 finale, while "cooler" because of the whole thing with the Spirit World and the giant fish monster, doesn't have the same sort of weight to it, and it doesn't have as much buildup, either.
