I don’t know if you guys ever have any interest in revisiting FMA, but there’s a couple of really good OVA’s! (Official original video animations). Brotherhood OVA number four is called “Another Man’s Battle” if you’d like a little more backstory on Roy and Hughes specifically. It’s set both during wartime and in the academy when they first met (which was referenced in this episode!)! Regardless I’m so enjoying this FMA rewatch with you all!

Though, you can in fact not like the show for your own personal reasons, but you can't say it's bad. FMAB is far from overrated, it deserves all the hype it's kept over the years and if you cant see why it's this good you need to study a little mor about what's not mentionned in the manga or anime.
