Like how the most famous anime in Japan would be either One Piece or Demon Slayer according to sales, Death Note in China, and probably Dragon Ball or Naruto in the West due to its amazing western adaptations and cultural impact.

My anticipation to see them succeed made me fall in love with the story *edit* I got the episodes wrong. I was sold on One Piece by episode 24. The Arlong Park arc was incredible though all the way through.

2024-01-19 12:35:33 +0000 UTCOne Piece is not a story you follow from point A to B, it's an expansive world that you live in with the characters. That's why it's such a beloved series... When you make that mental shift and start wanting to just live in the world with the characters, the episode count stops mattering and you actually appreciate it's depth. Naruto and Hunter x Hunter both have this same thing... You have to live in the world, and follow the plot in it's slow moments and fast pace peaks. It's probably my favorite thing about manga/anime as a medium... The worlds are so massive, it becomes fun to just live in them through the characters.

It's been one of my favorites since I was little and I can tell you that it really holds up imo (ignoring if people have issues with old animation in the begining and what not) and only continues to get better. Also I hope I'm not spoiling but just a little rough sum up for why the series are so long cause Luffy's crew are usually stationed on certain location for either a fighting or exploring (that kinda takes about 50 ep), the worlding building are then added into it which is spectacular. Also love the idea at the end also I hope you guys are enjoy Naruto too

Going to so many places, that have unique environments, rules, people, etc. captures that sense of adventure so well and is big part of why a lot of people love the show. I also don't see how it's a stretch to say that most elements are done much better in One Piece when compared to Naruto. Granted, I'm very biased, but the writing and sheer scale of the world, with all its characters, histories, and cultures, are well executed and developed. This alone stands above Naruto.

2024-01-18 22:51:20 +0000 UTCImo One Piece is one of the great modern epics of our time, up there with LOTR. The story and characters are good from episode 1. What new watchers have trouble with is the art/animation and the fights. I think that people often make the mistake of assuming that because Naruto and One Piece are compared so often, that they would be very similar, but this isn't the case. Arguably the biggest draw of Naruto is it's fights, but that couldn't be more opposite of OP. Although One Piece is also a shonen, its main appeal is not the fighting nor animation. It's the story, characters, and worldbuilding. The fights, art, and animation DO get better as the series goes on, but these are just additions, not the primary pull. If you guys started watching One Piece, I'd definitely stick around for the entire thing.

I even watched YouTube videos about the lore and characters, and reread certain parts of the manga. I was obsessed with it... and then I discovered One Piece. All I'm going to say is that Naruto is a great anime, but One Piece is just on a whole other level. It feels almost like it's a prerequisite to watch Naruto first, only to fully appreciate the greatness of One Piece later.

I was like you made fun of it and didnt want to watch it but decided to give it a go and man I'm glad I did. I loooove Naruto and for a long time I thought nothing could beat it but OP world building, characters and emotions just blew it out of the water for me. Plus Luffy is the GOAT he is HIM. The pacing issue pain is very much worth it for the absolute EPIC moments in this show. I cant wait for you to start the journey it will be the trip of a life time.

There’s a couple of characters on Naruto that lack origin stories and they are important characters too. Even side character in ONE PIECE have incredible backstories and some complex. Don’t get me wrong there’s some top tier characters in Naruto 1 thousand percent, but in terms of character depth and development I think One Piece takes the crown IMO.

Naruto does the things I like better and I can forgive its issues because of how much I love it. Also, I couldn't tell you if it's just nostalgia or what, but I could never care about a character in One Piece the way I do Jiraiya and there is no character comparable to how absolutely sick Itachi is (subjective ofc). One Piece backstories have made me cry multiple times and the plot is just obviously more well thought out. The world building is infinitely better and it all comes together very well, although I do disagree that the pacing is similar. The One Piece pacing is just worse than Naruto because Naruto used filler to avoid catching up, while One Piece just paces things slower. Naruto is just easier on a rewatch, while One Piece works better if you're following along weekly. And obviously, Naruto's fights are way better than One Piece. One Piece does well with the big reveals, but the actual combat is incredibly lacklustre.

If you regard it as an adventure journey, it would be fantastic to watch. It’s very creative and Luffy is very adorable. I realized that the reason why I dropped it is that I was anxious to see how they complete their goal, which ruined the whole experience.

Rather than just introduced and forgetten abt like naruto. So yes the pacing is def more of a problem but it has way more stuff to cover. But both indisputably have pacing issues. Plus weather conditions change all the time it can be summer and warm one minute and winter storm 5 minutes later. Same with the ocean currents. That’s it is only possible to travel with “log poses”. Which keeps the log of magnetic field of islands and point to the next one in grand line. You need to reach an island and stay there for a time for log pose to point to the new island. So, in short it’s worldbuilding justification so they need to hop from island to island. Also even if you go from the sky you need a navigation and conventional navigation tools don’t work in grand line. To answer Mckay’s question why this world needs to be so big: Narratively, one of the big themes of One Piece is “adventure”. Leaping through the unknown and discovery. Hopping from island to island with different climates, animals, flora, people, politics and conflicts provides this sense of adventure and makes the audience feel the same sense of wonder and excitement with the crew. Having so many different places enables the author put different themes in the spotlight. There are arcs that deals with colonialism, racism, slavery, war, class and wealth inequality, genocide, censorship,civil war, blood and found family, gender and so on. So under whacky and whimsical designs, so much dark and realistic stuff is going on in one piece. I would say it is a bit like Star Wars which has so many whacky stuff as well. Bright, colorful and comedic designs provide a contrast with the real and terrible conflicts covered in story and many of the arcs have this narrative of finding ugly truths in places that looks whimsical and happy which goes along with the designs. One of my favorite things in One Piece is when Oda shows a side-side character with the most absurd design, and a while later gives this character a hard af backstory. Well, this comment went unintentionally long just as One Piece lol. But as everyone know OP fans can’t shut up about the show because there are so many things going on to talk about: worldbuilding, narrative themes, characters, theories etc.

My buddy watched and said i had to see one piece. That it was the only show that knocked naruto off its pedastal by a mile. I finally as an adult gave it a shot, and i can firmly say, (Now being caught up and really keeping an open mind) that naruto is not even close in terms of world building, politics, story, plot or any other metric except naruto may have a higher peak when it comes to specific fight scenes. It really isnt close. Yall may hate on it, but once u try u’ll have a hard time even fighting for naruto in an argument when it comes to comparing the two. Naruto looking back has so many plot holes, the “talk-no justu” bails him out of every situation and side characters are introduced then forgotten about. Whereas one piece has risk, has boundaries, and has limits, while still finding a way for side characters you met 100 episodes before to somehow be relevant and impact the story down the line. And luffy is just THAT GUY. After being a naruto fan pretty much all my life, i am ashamed to admit i at one point had him over luffy. And im ashamed that i ever thought that naruto was better. Its a great show, and based off pure nostalgia i absolutely love it. But when it comes to comparing the two. One piece wins by a million miles. One piece does have pacing issues, but so does naruto so that side of the argument is kind of irrelevant, when both suffer from the same issue.

Naruto was my very first anime and i love naruto very much even with all the ridiculous filler BUT i believe One Piece is better than Naruto in my opinion for various reasons from the World building (you've seen how large the world is now and the way we get to experience each aspect is amazing) i love the story of one piece. the Characters themselves, the character development for them and the bond the crew has for each other. also the animation progression from where the anime started to where its at now is jaw dropping. idk there just some sort of emotion you get from how strong Luffy and the Crew care for each other that you just dont get from alot of other animes.
