2024-04-22 20:52:07 +0000 UTCAnyone else here excited for them to get to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind? I've seen a lot of people excited for Princess Mononoke but no one mentioning Nausicaa. I feel like if you liked Ashitaka as a character then Nausicaa is similar in a lot of ways. Anyone have an opinion? Nausicaa is my personal favorite Miyazaki film, even as old as it is.

2024-02-14 00:18:42 +0000 UTCWhen director Miyazaki was making "Spirited Away,'' he said he wanted to base the story on Kenji Miyazawa's work "Night on the Galaxy Express.'' The assumption that Haku is the older brother who drowned while trying to save Chihiro who fell into the river was also made to bring it closer to the episode that appears in "Night on the Galactic Railway.'' This is not officially approved but this is one of the theory that the guy, who used to work with Miyazaki, analysed. Haku reincarnated as god because he died to help others and this is why he doesnt remember his previous name. This guy also talks abt so many things that make sense to this theory but its all in japanese so its kinda hard for me to translate cuz im still learning eng.

2024-02-12 06:50:01 +0000 UTCHe regained his memory once she reminded him of his true name as the Kohaku River. If he was her brother then that would not have been his true name and it would not have freed him. It's a nice sentiment but you have to ignore certain facts in the story to make it work.

2024-02-12 06:19:26 +0000 UTCI already commented, but I wanted to share a couple things. 1) the character growth that chihiro has is because she learned from Haku who helped her with no expectation of being rewarded. We see this repeated when Chihiro helps Haku, the baby & mouse are inspired by the selfless deed which helps them grow too. 2) the theory of the human-like women is that the longer you stay the longer you become less human and forget. 3) no-face to me was supposed to represent greed and gets overwhelmed by the greed of the bathhouse workers. This is why being in the country with Zaniba is so good for him. Though the spirit world depicts humans as selfish and harmful to the environment, the true message is that humans are not like that on their own, they grow to adopt what they see, so Chihiro’s pure good comes from Haku and that it’s important they’re both kids since they’re relatively considered pure good. 4) the parents being pigs/not being in the test is because the idea that her parents aren’t as neglectful as we think and only pigs would actually be that horrible which is why her parents were excluded from the test. I think that her parents aren’t as bad as they seemed at the beginning because we are seeing chihiro’s perspective of her parents. She’s very concerned with her own life and how the move disrupted her life. So post adventure, the parents aren’t perfect but there is more caring dialogue from the parents such as “everything will be alright, honey” and “a new home and a new school? It can be kinda scary”. Both sentences imply the parents do pay attention to her. 5) definitely the movie is less confusing to Japanese people because of children’s tales about the spirits. 6) the randomness of the plot is less so for sure after the first watch. But also if you break it up into episodes and not think too logically about it, it makes more sense. Especially considering this is all the perspective of a child and a child doesn’t use logic to dictate decisions, they use emotions and experiences. For example, the first “episode” is her family entering the spirit world through the tunnel. Does it make sense to think about why a tunnel would lead to such a place? Not really, but it happened. The second episode is Chihiro losing her parents and navigating by herself for the first time. The next is her accepting her role to take care of herself alone and what work actually entails. Then the bath scene with the spirit is to show her experiencing hard work paying off and trusting her own judgement. And pretty much the rest break off points are self-explanatory. The randomness of the actual designs of the characters again makes sense following Japanese myths and lore. But the plot is a lot less obscure when looking at it this way. You’re supposed to feel lost and confused because that’s what Chihiro is feeling and also how life can feel. Additionally, there is huge belief in fate and Miyazaki really likes to play into that to give his films a sense of magic. 7) The river being filled in makes more sense if you’ve seen Miyazaki’s other films because environmental concerns are a HUGE theme. Since this film was made in 2001, I think three or four other films preceded that which have a lot of environmental awareness so it’s not as bizarre of a one-off backstory. 8) the ending is also supposed to be left with questions because it really replicates the feeling of “not looking back”. If we got more information, we would be returning to the world. I know that was a lot and honestly I have so much more to say, but these were my takeaways from the film. Great reaction guys!!

2024-02-09 20:07:41 +0000 UTCFavorite movie for sure. This movie made me fall in love with Miyazaki films and Joe Hisaishi (composer). The music is truly phenomenal and triggers nostalgia that is specifically one which you can only feel but have no actual memory to recall. At least that’s what it does for me. This is also one of the only Miyazaki films where the protagonist looks very different from his normal drawing style (ponyo also looks different but it’s more abstract). This film also taught me that not all love is romantic or familial, love for a friend is unique because usually it’s someone who you got to choose to love while romance comes later and family was established for you. Also, the part about Haku and Chihiro being related has not been verified by Miyazaki. It is a very intriguing theory and would make for a good back background story, but the only reason I would negate the explanation is that it would subvert Miyazaki’s critique on environment which is something he has explicitly stated he cares about. Again, the theory is interesting and not impossible.

2024-02-09 18:48:51 +0000 UTCGreat reactions as always. This was my third watch and what both Carter and the others express afterwards about their overall thoughts on their respective first and second watch is completely how I felt - “flashbang” is really a great word for it. I think for most shows and movies you kind of find yourself predicting where the story is gonna go, and you will be mostly right most of the time. But for Spirited Away it feels pretty much impossible right from the get-go. You never know where you’re gonna go, or what will be happening even just five minutes in the future. I think Carter’s call to not say anything whatsoever was the right move. You can only have that blind and overwhelming experience once, but you can in theory rewatch the movie and appreciate the finer details as many times as you want.

2024-02-08 19:35:07 +0000 UTCHaku is actually Chihiro's older brother. He died and became a river spirit when he helped her from falling into the river. When Chihiro got her memories back, she was naked in the water (in old times in Japan it was normal for kids to play in the river naked) and there was one hand with sleeves, that's Haku's hand helping Chihiro. She forgot that she had a brother due to this accident. The reason why Chiriro's mother was a bit cold to Chihiro was because of this accident. She was so upset because her son died so Chihiro's father wanted to make a fresh start in a new environment, and that's why they are moving.

2024-02-08 06:35:58 +0000 UTCThis is a Miyazaki classic for a reason. I love the fantastical elements he uses in his films that seem so outlandish but become endearing. It's such a unique world and seeing Chihiro's character growth is so wholesome to watch. I kind of think that some Miyazaki films get better the more you think about it afterwards lol. I can appreciate Carter's rewatch takes. I think on a rewatch you get a better opportunity to marinate in the bigger picture.

2024-02-07 21:43:00 +0000 UTCExcited to hear Princess Mononoke is next! That one along with Castle in the Sky is one of my favorite Ghibli movies/movies in general! And in regards to the ending discussion, I really don't think anyone can blame you for having questions and all when you don't know what you're getting into lol. Spirited away is definitely one of the busier movies, with a lot going on! Maybe its just because I grew up watching them, but I never really felt the need to question many of the things in Ghibli movies and such to the same extent I might with other things - not because I'm not thinking of it (there's much to think about!), but because I feel like its one of those things where you just accept the journey as it comes, yk? And then they definitely make for great rewatches, where you have the big picture, and can go on to even better appreciate the little details~ Also yes, its definitely partially a cultural thing as well. Spirits and the like are pretty prominent throughout Japanese culture thanks to the influence of Shintoism and such, so its really not so strange for them to make appearances in media and the like as it might be for more western audiences.

2024-02-06 22:19:06 +0000 UTCThis was the first Studio Ghibli movie I ever watched and I became obsessed with it, watching it every single day, multiple times a day! One thing to note about Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki movies is that whatever he's feeling inspired by or wanting to do in the moment, he just does it, so sometimes it seems random but still also connected somehow. Miyazaki went all out creatively on this one! Also, I'm about to leave an ESSAY about a lot of things you guys had questions about (and then some) to try to clear up some confusion. You might've already watched a video essay, but I'm still going to add it here. There are a lot of cultural nuances in the movie that gets missed for obvious reasons. One example, the Radish Spirit in Japan is known, among other things, as someone who has parental characteristics and adores kids. That's why he follows Chihiro to the top floor, because he's concerned about her and wants to make sure she gets to where she needs to go. Japanese people would understand this, but of course, Westerners would think it's weird without that cultural context. Also, Lin is a fox spirit but takes on a humanized form because it's easier for the others working in the bath house to approach her in that form. Unfortunately, she's stuck at the bath house. We also see a lot in the movie where Chihiro is called lazy and spoiled and it's true. In Japanese culture, children doing chores is important so that they can become self-sufficient in these everyday tasks when they get older and in hopes of them becoming responsible adults. This is taught to Japanese children when they're in elementary school, especially cleaning the classroom which includes wiping the floors. Because Chihiro isn't able to keep up with her peers when doing her chores, it's clear to Japanese viewers that she never did these chores before and thus lived a spoiled life. Lin also says, "It's like you've never worked a day in your life," and it's because of this cultural nuance. Respect is also important for obvious reasons. That's why at the beginning of the movie, Lin scolds Chihiro for not saying thank you or showing appreciation to those helping her. It comes off as rude, but it's an expection in Japanese culture, though most Japanese wouldn't point it out like Lin lol. In regards to Haku, and as mentioned in the movie, he was a river spirit, but his river was drained by humans to make room for apartments. This means he ended up losing his home (the river itself), and so he wandered without a place he could go back to. Eventually, he showed up at the bath house and ended up staying there as that become his new "home." The Japanese believe that everything has a spirit and that they take on many different forms. The spirits with bigger responsibilities are the ones that go to the bath house to cleanse and replenish itself after a long day. River spirits typically take on a dragon form in Japanese culture, which explains why Haku can become one. The "stink spirit" is also a river spirit, and it's odd that they just wrote it off as "old and rich," but he's actually an ancient and wise river spirit; thus, he looks like an elderly man and can also take on a dragon form. But when you first see the spirit, it gets mistaken as a "stink spirit", and there's a reason. The scene of Chihiro and the workers pulling the thorn out of it and all the trash spewing out is actually Miyazaki's take on environmentalism. Basically, humans had polluted the river spirit's waters with so much garbage and random stuff (such as the bicycle) and that's why it became dirty and "stank." This comes from Miyazaki's personal experience when he was helping to clean the waters in Japan and found bikes and so much trash in them. Lastly, Chihiro forgets her memories of being in the Spirit World. She's not supposed to have any connection to it. And when Haku says it's a promise that they'll meet again, people theorize that he means they'll meet in the afterlife. In the Japanese sub, Haku says something along the lines of, "I'm going to quit being Yubaba's apprentice and go back to my world." which means that his world and Chihiro's world is still different and that, logically, the only way they'd meet again is in the afterlife (Spirit World). I really like this movie because Chihiro is just a normal kid trying to adapt to a new world, and through her experiences she learns to accept things and not judge what's different from what she's known. She learns to become self-sufficient, gain courage to face her fears, and survive without the form of any supernatural power. She's just trying to be a decent person and because of that people gravitate towards her. She doesn't let people's misconceptions of her change her kindness towards them. She's super relatable too, and you find yourself rooting for her. The storytelling is also super whimsical and creative, and I think the randomness makes it enjoyable because you can't predict what's going to happen but it's still a pleasant surprise.

2024-02-06 19:14:21 +0000 UTCI second that suggestion for Sword of the stranger. I think its probably the best showcase of sword animation in all of anime even today, and it's a masterclass in cinematography, as well as a superb soundtrack that will give you chills all over your body with instruments hitting incredible highs in perfect sync with pristine piercing sounds of swords clashing... its just divine how it all comes together with so much adrenaline rushing through your body as you witness such greatness of human achievement. A masterpiece on so many levels. As for Princess Mononoke, I really think for such an old film, you should really go with sub, since the dubs in those days werent that great.

2024-02-06 07:46:04 +0000 UTCI watched this movie like 6-7 years ago. This was a really good rewatch. I’m not very movie smart enough to understand if there is any inner meaning or anything, but I very much liked what’s there in the front. Super dope animation, so much mistery, leaving alot for the watchers to interpret, beautiful music…A wholesome watch altogether. Also makes me wonder, as unrealistic a story it is, what happens after? how would you live out the rest of your life if something like this happens to you at a young age?????

2024-02-06 07:40:01 +0000 UTCI feel like we have to remember Miyazaki made this movie for Japanese children. 2024-02-06 04:53:47 +0000 UTCI remember reading somewhere that said Haku was actually Chihiro's dead older brother. He wasn't always a river god, but dying for someone else, which is considered one of the few ways to become a god in Japanese Myths, turned him into a god after death. That explains why Chihiro's parents weren't so caring for her, cuz they considered Chihiro the reason their son died. If you look closer into the flashback Haku had, a shoe got flooded away, and a hand(of his) reached into the river. Love in the movie isn't romantic but the will to sacrifice yourself for others, like what Haku did for Chihiro, and Chihiro risking her life to help Haku.

2024-02-06 03:47:50 +0000 UTCI think it's just cultural differences in storytelling and what we expect. we get so focused on plot and external conflict where eastern storytelling just doesn't. and you just end up at the place the story began. definitely can be frustrating at times

2024-02-06 02:33:11 +0000 UTCThank you for this reaction! This movie will always hold a special place in my heart. I watched it when I was a kid and many times afterwards. It's such a strange, scary, but magical place that she gets thrown into rapidly. I love how Chihiro brings out the good in others and makes them feel safe. The music makes you feel emotional and calm. Hayao Miyazaki makes the most beautiful films. His art is a true masterpiece. But for a non-anime recommendation even though I love anime, but for something different, could you maybe consider a Korean movie called Train to Busan (2016) that was recently released on Netflix. It's so good and intense. I think ya'll would love it. Well maybe not Carter since he gets a little squeamish... haha but the film keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time and you're rooting for the good guys.

2024-02-06 02:11:30 +0000 UTCOf course you are not the only one but I don't get how it could be boring. I mean there was everything happening in this movie. But maybe the first time watching this movie there is just too much happening as the couch said.

2024-02-06 00:48:51 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure there is a lot on this movie that we miss, just for not being Japanese, like the whole things with spirits for example, I'm sure there is a lot of symbolism that might be rooted to the culture. This is only my second watch and the first time I saw this movie was like 15 years ago, but I remember almost everything. It's my favorite Ghibli movie and it has an special place in my heart, even if I do think it's weird sometimes and had other elements I don't understand.

2024-02-06 00:39:18 +0000 UTCJapan reveres many spiritual beings since they arent a monotheistic religion so they have endless spirits and gods they worship, pray to or give offerings to for even daily benefits. Having a bath house for the spirits in the story shows how the spirits need cleansing from all the impurities they accumulate due to influence from the human world. It's especially obvious in that scene where Chihiro cleanses the river spirit from which all manner of human world garbage is being pulled out, and what she got from that spirit was later used to cleanse all manner of sickness... river spirit - water - a symbol of healing. Then you have Haku being a river spirit too, but he forgot his name because again humans built their apartments where his river used to be... again, another example of humans destroying the gift of nature. But the greatest thing I love about this film, and if you watch more of Ghibli films, you may notice something they all have in common - every time even the "bad guys" are either forgiven, or given another chance at redemption. And this is what I feel is the greatest message of LOVE, and what love in its purest form is all about - kindness and forgiveness. I dont think Chihiro is old enough to have romantic love for Haku, or to even understand that kind of love... the kind of love she embodies is the purest love there is in my opinion - selfless kindness and forgiveness. Several times she offered everything she had and could for others even at her own expense and at the expense of her own parents when she didnt have to, and she did it out of pure want to help someone in pain. This is something you can be shown and taught through the love a parent has for their child which is the purest kind of love there is. This is the love Chihiro knows, and what she embodies and shows towards every other character in this story. She gave a chance even to the No-Face spirit when no one else would. This is the open mindedness and almost naivete you only see in children, which is why I love Ghibli films so much. They all have this strong message of kindness and forgiveness. Even would you forget everything else about the story of any of those movies, I bet you wont ever forget how you felt when those tears came out of nowhere yet you still felt so happy. And thats, I think, how it should be.
Mysterious Figure
2024-02-06 00:36:37 +0000 UTCOh this show has tons of deep meaning behind it. I’ve written an essay about it when I did Asian studies at university. Can share with you a couple of interesting facts. When Chihiro’s name is taken away by Yubaba there is only one Kanji character left on the contract paper, it’s 千 (Sen) which means one thousand. Yeah don’t get confused, the same characters might have various pronunciations depending on how they’re combined but this character alone is a mere number. It shows that Chihiro loses her identity and personality and becomes a numeral value to the place. Another interesting fact I could share is that in Japan people follow Shinto religion and there are like more than 8 million gods and they can be represented by literally any objects, places and creatures like stones, foxes, rivers and even radish :) So don't be surprised by such random creatures like the Radish Spirit in the show. People worship it for agricultural prosperity.

2024-02-05 23:33:41 +0000 UTCWhile I agree that'd be nice, I thought the dub for this was pretty good. Though, I don't know why Haku's voice was so aggressive lol. I feel it gave him a different vibe. Mononoke will be weird for me in dub though, considering that it takes place in ancient rural Japan.

2024-02-05 21:57:01 +0000 UTCWhat a good surprise! To confirm, nobody is human besides Chihiro in that spirited world. I love this movie; I'm glad you guys liked it. As you say, this movie is something that you watch more; you will find many more things(especially thinking about what No-face is). I didn't recommend this movie to you guys before because it is weird, and Hayao Miyazaki strongly made this for children. Adults enjoy it, but it's more for kids to expand their magical imaginations with the growth of Chihiro as mirroring themselves and being aware and caring for surrounding nature at their age. (And yes, "spirit" is deeply rooted in Japanese culture. Also, unfortunately, even dud is good, it missed quite many elements and characters personality when compared to Japanese script.) I can't wait to watch Princess Mononoke next!! Also, I believe that Castle in the Sky and Naucicaa(you REALLY HAVE TO DO A SUB FOR THOSE THREE) would be your jams! I think you have yet to watch the Ghibli movies, which can be your top 3. All Ghibli movies are handwritten, one frame to frame—such beautiful and detailed animations with incredible music. Hope you enjoy more Ghibli to come!
