Late for the party. I like how the author is always willing to make bold decisions that people either hate or love. In my first watch, I appreciated how the Welfin-Ikalgo scene was placed between Netero and the King fight. To me, it shows the author’s empathy toward his characters; he deeply cares about all of his characters regardless of how minor they seem. It also shows that he "selfishly" doesn't tell the story for the audience, he tells exactly how things are going with the characters and what happens at the moment in chronological order, making them so real. The author made it seem as though all fights were equally important to him, with the order of the fights determined solely by what occurred before and after. It feels very intentional and interesting. The Welfin-Ikalgo scene is also beautiful and unpredictable. I thought the same as Welfin; I totally didn’t expect that Ikalgo could pull the triggers so many times after not being able to kill Bloster and being parasitized. HxH has always been very unpredictable since the beginning. I recall being impressed by Gon’s reason to be a Hunter in the first episode (being a hunter must be so great that his dad abandoned him) and thought that I was about to watch something very special.

I love slow pacing shows, and movies, as much as I like watching action. But when it is done with intention. Just padding time by showing the same conversation from 4 different angles is not a good storytelling anymore. We outgrew that cliché 10 years ago. Also, I would agree that taste changed with time, I do not have much free time anymore, and I love when show respects that. I can watch LOTR extended edition every time, bc all the scenes carry something important that adds to the experience, but filler adds nothing. I used to say that fillers make characters more interesting, since you have more time with them, but now I realize it is just a cheap method of extending the show (This part does not apply to HxH, they don't have fillers, they do OP thing where episode that should last 15min lasts 20 )

Yeah there's definitely a problem of needing things to constantly happen, but it doesn't necessarily excuse repetitive or over-indulgent introspection scenes. It's one piece of (good) Western media I still prefer to anime. A lot can be said very effectively without cutting to a character's internal thoughts. My favorite shows (Better Call Saul, early GoT...) are incredibly slow and masters of subtlety and show-don't-tell. It's only a very slight problem in HxH as far as I'm concerned, but more so of anime like Naruto, which I still love to death but it is ROUGH sometimes. Not to mention anime has the benefit of every little detail in the animation being deliberately drawn/animated, meaning the animators can be deliberate with every character's movement or expression.

^ this is a perfect example of how our opinions on media consumption have changed over time. Nowadays, it's all about ADHD/TikTok brain (like the first comment mentioned) and that things have to be CONSTANTLY happening and happening fast. It's really an interesting phenomenon. Perhaps it's just that people are more critical of their own time. I personally don't believe much of this arc could be cut down, especially 20 episodes worth lol, but with the shift in pacing of recent anime/manga, it's made a lot of people turn to dislike slower paced stories that take more time to spend on characters, storyline, or world more.

Lol this is exactly what I did, the pain waiting weekly for each episode, from ep 122 to 123... I even wrote blogs so people would watch the series. HxH was underrated back then if you can believe that. Also on a side note - no, cutting 20 episodes (even if they are slow) is a ridiculous statement. Not to forget the best of hxh is the slow thought-provoking storytelling it so well excels. Ikalgo's journey as well as Plam's and especially the conclusion to Welfin are some of the best the show has to offer and could not be done without granted slow but subtle buildup. Well tbf my fav anime is about 7 kids in prison so that could just be me then.

Yeah those are my favorites too. Unless for the Marineford. I especially liked Whole Cake Island and Dressrosa had my second favorite character in it. But what makes your and Jack's statements irrelevant are the episode ratings. While Whole Cake and Dressrosa got about 30 9.0+ episodes, the whole 33 episodes of Marineford had 31 9.0+ ratings.

SPOILERS WARNING— I know the last arc is controversial and hit-or-miss for some ppl but personally I love the reincarnation idea, it truly does make the story tie together for me in so many ways. I mean you could write endlessly about the character/story relations, there are just so many links between morals, characters, story. And a lot of it does focus around creating a world of love, so much so that it has been a driving force of both action and conflict for generations. The links you can find in Shippuden are something that just don’t exist in HxH

I really don't care for sub/dub debates, I just enjoy what I enjoy, but this entire arc has really good dub performances. I often throw something on while going to sleep so I look for good dubs so I can follow along without watching and I struggle to find an abrasive dub actor in this arc that takes me out of it. Not to suggest you switch to dub here at any point but if any of yall are interested in a rewatch I'd recommend giving this arc specifically a try, even Gon's jan-ken chant changes and is less cringe I believe.

Seeing how much they’ve loved this show so far makes me even more hyped for them to experience Naruto Shippuden. If they think the story here is good, I simply can’t wait for them to quite literally fall in love with Shippuden, which aside from the elite fighting, storytelling, world building, character+story layers/depth, and the way in which it all ties together at the end (which is on a level different from any anime they’ve seen and top-tier in anime in general—exceeding Attack on Titan, which I am happy to debate on) Shippuden is itself a story about love and restoring that love.

Then ask "I don't understand why they didn't elaborate that part" but then Ikalgo's episodes ELABORATED those part and now you're basically like "I wished they didnt showed this part it would've been fine". You can still skip certain borring episodes if you want and try to say it would've been fine if they didn't existed, but remember when it existed that you complained about it because you never tried to understand why it existed why the author put that there. One of the reasons why I love this show is the subversion of expectations that blends seamlessly into the story-telling. I remember not too long ago Carter was fussing about how would our team tackle the Royal Guards given the latter are so much superior in strength. Youpi alone managed to almost take out all of the hunters, and he pretty much would have killed everyone, but Togashi gave him a brilliant character development that worked so well for him during his battle with the hunters. Also, going back to the Hunter exam, do you remember what was the final task? One-to-one match wherein you had to make your opponent surrender without killing them. This is exactly what Mereum has to do to Netero, make him surrender without killing to learn his name. Had it just been to kill Netero, I think it would have been a relatively simpler task. But to make someone surrender especially when you have superior strength without killing them is a lot more difficult. I love the full circle back to the Hunter exam!

This is so true, one of HxH's main intent is to subvert expectations and to challenge conventional storytelling tropes. This is why we never really get a lot of crazy fights compared to other shounen anime. It just goes to say that whatever anime you watch there's always going to be a person that will hate it or not like it. Complain about its story progression of how slow, quick, and imperfect it is. Even AOT which I think for me is 10/10 for other people it's still lacking something like the "ending", for hxh the "yapping" and hiatus, for one piece the long story 1000+ episodes. The existence of a "Perfect Anime" is impossible unless EVERYONE agrees to it. Every anime reaction channel is critique and think that their opinion is (somehow) "right", but what about the authors that wrote those stories/manga, at least - most - of them in their point of view of creating their own anime for them it's a MASTERPIECE in their own right but for readers and watchers that's something we would never understand because we're just judging we didn't put sweat and brain in that paper, we just judge and think that every anime lacks something. A never ending cycle of dissatisfaction! sad..
