Also, fun fact I haven't seen anyone else mention yet, but Slave 23/Hoenheim was actually voiced by Aaron Dismuke, who did the voice for Alphonse in the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime! I know you guys haven't seen that one, but it's kind of fun that when Aaron was young he had the higher voice for Alphonse and now as an adult with a more mature voice he was able to voice their dad xD

I think "Father" needed half the lives simply so he could create his new body and move out of the flask, because he can't survive out of the flask. The body is like his new flask

2024-02-21 12:08:02 +0000 UTCWhile I love episode 40 and I think that flashback is one of the more memorable moments of the show, I’ve come to love the writing of episode 41 so much after some reflection. The theme of episode 41 largely revolves around the conviction not to take lives that Ed and Al has. Miles calls it idealistic, and as a viewer it is hard to disagree with him, especially in the face of people like Kimblee. And the show doesn’t try to prove him wrong at all, in fact it reinforces it in the fight against Kimblee, where he himself points out the ‘stupidity’ of trying to spare the life of your enemies, and then hits Ed with a fatal wound. So the way of life that Ed’s chose was just naive idealism in the end? Well not exactly… even though his mercy nearly got him killed, it is the very same mercy that made the chimeras help him heal himself, and take him to a doctor. Not just that, but Kemblee’s ruthlessness assisted in the chimeras’ betrayal. There is more to mercy and ruthlessness than just the immediate fight in front of you, or even personal feelings. Ed may have chosen the more difficult path, and we do see that, but what he gains in return is outside help and the ability to make allies. The chimeras were dumbfounded that he asked for their help when they were just fighting each other, and his only response is “yeah..”. It is perfectly in character for Ed, because it is basically how he behaves towards everyone else all the time. It’s not like the writing of it is particularly complex, but it is so, so beautiful imo, and it works really well. Episode 41 might very well be my favorite episode due to this <3

And I think brig saying "I've gained so much knowledge but do not feel enlightened at all" is how a lot of the characters in this show feel lol. The philosopher's stones in the homonculi come from "father" so we can assume that they are the souls of the citizen's of Xerxes, especially w envy confirming that the contorted bodies he's made out of are what were once the citizens of xerxes

The more fuel you have in the stone the longer it lasts, the more energy can be used by using up those souls. That's why the priests stone disintegrated, it ran out of energy, not because it was "fake". It's super weird when Ho apologizes before shoving his hand in izumi, but I think he was apologizing to the soul that was used in order to help her out. He's just like Ed and Al, he sees those people still as people, people he literally knew.

We don't know the exact process because it was hohenhiems master that made it, but that is why it's so knowledgeable despite just being made and living in a flask. Imagine being hohenhiem, seeing the dead bodies of everyone he ever knew, cared aboutz respected. And if he listens he can hear all of them screaming in agony. And that little shit had the audacity to say "I think I'd be happy if I could just leave this flask" *LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER*

She wanted to convey the pain she felt of what it was like to give birth and this we have that scene of Ed getting the metal pulled out of him. Olivier is a stone cold woman and seems super extra regarding mustang and her brother. But while it all has some truth to it, she's mainly being extra to make sure the brass doesn't try to use Alex against her or take him hostage like hawkeye. And I LOVE how they so easily communicate in code. Like they just get it, no confusion, complete trust between multiple people

2024-02-21 02:09:38 +0000 UTCWith Xerxes being in the middle between Amestris and Xing, we now know that Father went west towards Amestris and Hohenheim went east towards Xing as the golden man as May says. Father, sought to spread his knowledge of alchemy and influence primarily in Amestris, which turns into a militaristic nation where alchemy is often used for destructive purposes. Hohenheim, on the other hand, travels to Xing and shares his knowledge, leading to a different approach to alchemy in that country, where it's focused more on medicinal and healing practices. I just thought this is a cool sort of mirroring between Father and Hohenheim how we see the nature of Xing and Amestris's alchemy is based off their own nature (idk if that makes sense).
