A little late haha, but yeah that is almost the whole point. We have seen several times Daemon hating the Westerosi traditions and that is what Rhaenyra is responding to. Like how she disregards the politics and most rumours until her kids are threatened. Not saying she doesn’t care about the realm but she definitely does not care for the culture and the old gods (and the hightowers being religious as well makes it more apparent) and that is what frustrates Alicent, that she complies to "the order of things" while Rhaenyra doesn’t but still thrives. And yes somewhat because she is the heir, but if she was born a man no one would really hate her as much for being spoiled, like that would be expected (Aegon being a perfect example of this, like yes people would be frustrated but would not take it as an offence). So I sympathise with Alicent but I will never be team green bc even the targaryens on team green aren’t as involved with their birthright and ancestry (lack of fluency of high Valyrian and lack of history etc) bc of Alicent not understanding it and Otto straight up trying to change them to fit to Westeros.

Several of you came into this episode with a pretty negative impression of Rhaenyra. And the after show discussion exhibits a turnaround regarding several of your impressions of both Rhaenyra and Alicent. I won’t be surprised if this continues throughout the entire series. I also think it is totally fine to side with characters who you would never agree with in real life. I find it really silly when people want to question the morals and ethics of individuals because you can appreciate a morally grey or even blackish character in a story. I trust most people to be able to distinguish the difference between stories and real life. And to enjoy where an outrageous story goes without thinking you would ever endorse such actions in real life.

Martin’s stories is how he can write a story arc for a character that completely changes the way you think about them over the course of the story. He accomplishes this with quite a few of his characters in many of his stories. It is an especially amazing when a character is initially introduced in a way that the audience automatically decides they are the blackest of villains. And yet as the story progresses that same person becomes a fan favorite. I repeat that he accomplishes this many times with many characters in various stories. I will leave no details that could be construed as spoilers, but rather say that this is a core concept for George R.R. Martin. He believes there are very few truly good or evil people. That we are mostly all more complex than that, and his stories reflect that ideal. IMO it is quite silly for people to criticize your very honest reactions to the story you are immersed in watching.

2024-02-24 11:12:56 +0000 UTCsome dragon lore cus they’re so cool 😩 in this universe, dragons are not bound by laws really. the dragons are bound to the targaryens because of some spooky blood magic stuff (they might’ve been smashing ngl 🫣). so they are able to ride them and form a deep, magical connection with them, but they are literally living, walking nukes so ofc they have their own will. that being said, there is no birthright involved when claiming a dragon, the dragons choose their riders as much as the riders with the dragons. vhagar (girl btw) is very old like you guys said and her most notable dragon rider was visenya, the sister and wife of aegon the conqueror. she’s been mentioned a few times in the show, but she is famous for being a strong, ambitious warrior with very questionable morals at best. she’s kinda like daemon as a woman 😭 i think it’s a fun detail because dragons and their riders often reflect each other in personality and disposition. so along with aemond (epic) and laena (epic), knowing that visenya (EPIC) was possibly her first rider is so cool!! especially considering visenya could have been vhagar’s first rider and might’ve influenced her the most

The language she uses in this very episode says “the few times we lay together” and Jace is about the age of the time-skip when we meet him. That all suggests that they didn’t “try” all that hard. It’s honestly just an excuse to absolve Rhaenyra of any blame for her decision to sire bastards. It’s still fine to like Rhaenyra, but a lot of team black supporters also seem to want her to be infallible. It was an irresponsible decision, but she still has a lot of great traits.

House Hightower has nothing of real value to offer to strengthen the kingdom - no big military power or dragons or ships etc. The king made that decision strictly out of emotion, which is similar to how his daughter is behaving throughout the show. So from her point of view, she like Rhaenyra was also forced into a marriage but she did her duty. Is a good wife and gave the King heirs as was expected of her. She resents the fact that Rhaenyra gets to do whatever she wants and not only faces no consequences but is also protected by Viserys, while basically passing over their sons who's lives Alicent still believes would be in danger if Rhaenyra were to be queen. This episode is what made me team Alicent. Her son just lost his eye and instead of the King focusing on that, he's more concerned about protecting rhaenyra and her lies.

Also I'm team black. I sympathize with Alicent with her being used by the men in her life. However, Rhanerya is still the rightful heir. Not to mention being team green would mean preferring Aegon as king and I think it's obvious why I don't wanna see Aegon as king LOL. I honestly don't care if Rhanerya has bastards (i know it's everything in the show) but at the end of the day those kids are Rhaneryas. So in my eyes they're legitimate. It might've been a different story if those kids weren't hers or Laenors at all. But she still is their mother and they have her blood. I've said this before but Alicent's kids are just as much Targaryen as Rhanerya's (50%). Love the reactions, can't wait to see more!!

Their seat is in oldtown, which is home to the citadel, which is where all the maesters (the major scholars and doctors, basically) of the realm are trained. oldtown is also where the faith of the seven (westeros' main religion) began, and the largest sept (their version of a church/cathedral) in westeros is located. The hightower's power mainly stems from their deep involvement with the maesters and the church. Otto's older brother is the current lord of house hightower.

HOWEVER my issue with her is that even though she hates her position and lack of power (beautifully displayed in this ep), her main gripe with rhaenyra is that she wasn’t subjected to the same upbringing and scrutiny and has honestly behaved “more like a man” than any lady of westeros could really dream of. so instead of seeing this as an opportunity for real change in their society, with a woman at the forefront, alicent has made it her life’s mission to continue this cycle of women being subservient and powerless solely because that’s how SHE had to live her life. idk if this makes any sense but ultimately i think alicent is driven by jealousy and bitterness

When it comes to Alicent is driven by jealousy for rhaenyra as she points out rhaenyra has been doing shit without concequence, whereas alicent has done everything right but still not gained what she feels owed. In that way shes justified. However alicent (along with her father) is the one that got herself into this position. And the "cloak of rightousness" alicent wears is finally coming off after all these years. Alicent plotting (with otto), being spiteful against rhaenyra poisining her kids with the same paranoia otto told her in ep5 (about how thaenyra would kill all of them) etc,, But still painting herself to be better than rhaenyra when she is just as bad- if not worse,. Point is both the greens and blacks arguments are so layered and everybody got their own motives. Appreciate the hard work!

Aemond was confronted aggressively 4v1, Baela exclaims “it’s HIM” like it’s some bad thing, Aemond gets charged at first, hit first, knocked over and pummeled 4v1, only picks up the rock to act as a deterrent to stop them from continuing to attack him. NEVER once uses the rock it until JACE pulls the knife. Oh and btw, Vhagar cannot be stolen. Dragons are intelligent beings. Vhagar saw something special in Aemond, and now we are seeing it too.
