pineapplegreg

To see his character arc (as well as Carters) from AOT 1x1 to now... It could make a grown man cry.

notchrisramirez

Can we all take a minute to appreciate Cannon organically coming to the *correct* conclusion that Meruem vs. Netero is the greatest fight in anime history.

notchrisramirez

That's true also netero mentions something about emotions and the heart here

Pam

Intros and discussions are the best!

Pam

Don't underestimate human's ability of evolution/malice is the right translation, showing how the bomb works in cities is also to show that

Pam

The low budget part is because is not even a super sophisticated bomb that humans use and it did that to meruem, I think it was just to show that the capabilities of humanity are greater and not worth using them on the king

Pam

Netero had pressure to kill not only from knowing that the royal guards are looking for the king and that it was risky to trust the human side of meruem but from the political side of the hunter association

Pam

That's the point to notice that anything that netero did with his raw power could damage mereum much, individuality is not where humans are the strongest

Pam

Would be nice if we switched to 3 HXH 3 FAB after this arc, FMB 50 and onwards is peak,2 episodes a week would not be enough to keep the hype

I watch the intros :D

Fun fact: When Gon and Killua first met netero they played a game where the boys had to get a volleyball off netero. Netero put a handicap on himself where he couldn’t use his right leg and left arm. In his fight with meruem he couldn’t use his right leg or left arm.

Great stuff, guys. Deploying a bomb this destructive should be a last resort, especially when you may have to answer to international laws. If you do have to use it though, then you want to make sure the effort counts. That includes making sure that your target(s) doesn't realize what's happening and is too close to escape its AoE with their mad speed, and you want to keep said AoE as free of innocents (and infrastructure) as possible. That's what leads to a mission like this. And like others've said, no Nen user's dealing anywhere near the damage of a megaton bomb. At least not so far. Togashi's been pretty careful in capping what Hatsus can do. You can even see how Zero Hand was all fiery and beautiful, lots of light and noise, but still only melted a bit of stone surface. It lacked the sheer intensity/power of the bomb that followed.

SoreDakeNoKoto

Raccoon type shit

Aidan Ross

brig said to say raccoon

Dakota

So, one of the things everybody's buzzing about in the "Hunter" series is how awesome the power system is. Power don't run crazy; no matter how strong you are, you're still just a human. Even though Netero is already insanely powerful, using an atomic bomb to kill the Ant King is totally legit move. You can see the scale of the explosion compared to the damage caused by humans. Netero's death was also a duel he longed for, fight to the strongest guy. The bomb was just his insurance. Netero showing demonstrated immense strength, so nobody would suspect the bomb trick. . Attracting the Ant King to a one-on-one duel allowed him to drop his guard and catch him off guard, cause the King never saw that coming. I think Sending in fighter jets to bomb would be too obvious they can sense it right before get caught Netero was right there next to the King when he set off the explosion. Plus, who knows if that would even finish them and it can result in many human death. That's not a real option. Moreover, this is an anime all about epic battles. Who wants to see some military showdown? Lol. Also Netero wasn't even at his peak strength though. While he might not necessarily have defeated the Ant King in his prime, the battle would have been even more insane. The scene depicting how humans use atomic bombs actually aims to highlight the similarity between humanity's evil and the actions of ants. It also reflects on the countless lives lost in war.

Isaac L

On the question of why they bothered using Netero to fight when they could've just used the bomb in the first place, its pretty much hinted that Netero himself really wanted the fight to happen. He is already at the end stage of his life and had lost a lot of his strength from his prime, hence why he needed to spend a lot of time trying to regain his strength in the buildup to the attack on the palace. As for why the bomb is stronger than Netero's attacks, I think it makes sense and honestly I feel like a lot of animes and shows mess up the power scaling between superpowers and nukes. Nukes, such as the poor man's rose are able to wipe out a whole city with their destructive power. Nen users, including Netero, have not shown any sort of feats to compare with that destructive power. Take Uvogin for example, who is a top tier enhancer, his strongest attack creates an explosion which would maybe wipe out a street, but not much more than that. This is what I love about HxH compared to other shonens, its not just about characters getting more and more powerful in order to just top the previous arc's limit. Instead its about the themes and underlying messages. So for this fight between Meruem and Netero, we had an individual who basically stood for the culmination of the evolution and strength of an entire species (albeit a young one) going up against an person who is the pinnacle of individual strength but still just an individual, therefore he can't stand a chance against a Meruem by himself. However, the bomb is a representation of the human species' ability to evolve through technology and malice, something that the chimera ants are still too young and naïve to even compete against. Apologies for the long essayish comment but these couple of episodes are a great highlight of why this arc is considered a masterpiece, not just because of the flashy fight but because of the message behind it and how much it applies to real life where nuclear weapons have been developed and used to cause so much destruction.

Delane Gill

devakira

T.Yaseen

The bomb wasn't even a nuke; the blast radius is definitely smaller than a nuke's, and it doesn't precisely produce radiation. The whole point of it being "low-budget" was to showcase that the ants never really had a chance, we didn't even need to bring the most destructive weapon to deal with them. As evolved as Meruem might be, he pales in comparison to our potential for malice and destruction as a collective species.

Gaboxxy

Alex Ifill

Meruem vs Netero is my fav anime fight. It doesnt get better than this

nocomprendo

He knew that Meruem held wholehearted desires for a just world, and that he was equipped to do that and become a great leader. And in the deepest foundation of his soul, he probably wanted to see Meruem carry out his goal. Maybe not entirely, if it meant ants prevailing over humans, but at least he admired Meruem's ideals and methods. But Netero had a responsability, a method of quote unquote "winning", that unfortunately undercut all of the things that he represented, other than his trepidatious pride in his race's penchant for cynical victory. By his use of the Rose, he destroyed both his desires for a true victory (his hopes for a pure fight more so than "victory" since he had already lost) as a result of his strength and skills, and Meruem's honest motivations for a better world/improving society. And him piercing his heart is a symbolic representation of that. Netero spurned the things that his heart yearned for, becoming what many perceive as ant-like in carrying out what he had to do. He did what he did with reluctance but conviction, because it was his duty. "I must make this fast" "Before my heart is swayed."

devakira

But this instance is one of the cases where it can be argued that he does, with a mix of the ideals carefully developed by Meruem over time, the nearly protagonistic nature of Meruem by the climax of the Chimera Ant arc, and Netero himself's acknowledgement that what he was doing may have been wrong, showing that Meruem was the one in the closest thing to the right here. And that's why it was with such a heavy heart that Netero had to do what he did.

devakira

Sorry for the essay! HxH is full of individuals who use whatever bits of material or physical power they have to change the world around them in ways they see fit. It's a story of people full of personal agency. Netero is one of the best and most interesting display of power and conviction as well, as his final stand and battle are the prevailing outcome of his life's ideals. A combination of his ambition to remain at the peak of strength and his duty to humanity. And Meruem's existence provided him with the opportunity to use all of his power in way he purely yearned for. Fighting with all he had using his martial arts mastery to defend his race, something that was acknowledged by his expression of thanks in the midst of their fight. Togashi rarely moralizes in HxH. .

Always like your outros/intros in between episodes especially on big uploads. I also see why Carter held some hope for Meruem’s potential to be a good ruler even if it was a small one; we spent a long time watching him grow and be humanized so we know he is capable of some sort of change.

Hyōga❄️

I think in one of the subs or dubs, instead of “evolution”, Netero says “malice” which ties in better with the bomb, imo. I also always thought of it as a reference to Nagasaki and Hiroshima which also shows humanity’s potential for malice or “evolution”

Hyōga❄️

oh my lord

Cookie

I think the writing is great cuz it shows how wrong Meruem was when saying how the human race was no match for the culmination of species that made him and his strength. Compared to other animals, humans have been on earth far less time, but humans have managed to evolve and reign supreme over every other race throughout history because of our built upon intelligence that has grown LIMITLESS. Due to that, now we have nukes that literally can destroy all of planet life pretty much. So no matter what, humans can create far worse. There’s YouTube vids that explain this better lol I wish I could articulate better but yeah I see where you coming from tho.

Nonos

I think that togashi is making a claim about memory itself. The ants tried to separate the palms emotions from her memories. But what they didnt consider is that the seeds of the emotions are found within the memories themselves. So whenever the memory is invoked and watered the seed of that original emotion can grow and rather quickly. Because the emotion isn't a separate entity from experience they are interwoven.

Avishai Pinckney

The finger heart wasn't random cause on Netero's t-shirt was 心 (kokoro) which means heart\soul. And in his office on the wall was the 心.

Роман Потапкин

Heres my take on the palm thing.

I believe the whole point of Zero hand, which represents the pinnacle of individual strength is to help illustrate that the power of Nen is really nothing compared to the power of human technology. Even Meruem, one of the strongest organisms to ever exist is easily destroyed by a small and cheaply produced nuke. It’s supposed to be an easy victory, the ants never stood a chance against the might / malice of Humans.

Octavius

Remember when Netero fought Gon and Killua with only an arm and a leg?

Keiji

I don’t get your last point. The HA never was a ruling power of the world, it’s just an entity that still has to answer to larger government powers (V5). If anything Nen being unable to surpass certain military weapons makes complete sense, as it shows why the HA has to answer to other countries in the first place rather than stage a coup to become its own oligarchy or something.

The Chimera Ants are super powerful but they don't have enough knowledge and experience. When you consider the Chimera Ant's origins which gets explained later in the story and the centuries of human history and evil that was necessary to create the nuke, this outcome makes perfect sense to me. It's still a nuke, which was already used to kill thousands and thousands of people. Netero had to prepare for all possibilities because of Colt telling him that the King is way stronger but he couldn't take Colt's account as definitive.

tomatosoup

Can ya’ll put up a vote for the next 8 this weekend?

Jem de Jager

Netero was not on his prime, sadly.. If you watch the hxh movie there was a back story of him in his prime when he used a single arm it was like an equivalent of 1 Rose (nuke) or something, i think it's been nearly a decade since I watched that movie. I can't remember..

accomplice

Maybe someone in the government wanted Netero (The head of the Hunter association) dead.

Jem de Jager

Mate, there are very few problems you can fix by dropping a nuke... also you may be overestimating the power or the hunter association. Not to mention that hunters arent trying to be some political force with their own nation... they have totally different goals than countries would

Marlon

Who doesn't watch the intros??? 🦝 Man, Zero x and x rose is one of the 3 episodes that I was excited for you guys to see when you started this reaction and I'm glad you like it. I understand that the point of showing that the bomb is just a cheap thing is to demonstrate how humans are capable of more destruction that an ant, in this case the ant king could withstand a beam using the whole aura of a person, but didn't resist a cheap bomb. There is really good writing here, but I'll have to wait until you guys finish the arc to give my opinion.

Ale

it’s always a great time watching anything with you 5, especially during phenomenal episodes like the ones here and the ones that are yet to come :) thank u thank u

nans

it still pisses me off that Meruem dies to some small mass produced bomb when Netero literally trained his Nen for decades and prayed for two weeks to prepare this ultimate attack which unleashed immense aura which only slightly scratched Meruem one of the most powerful nen attacks in the entire show if not the most powerful nen attack and Is still nothing compared to some cheap mass produced bomb at this point I find it very weird how the Hunter organization can even project power in the world when Nen is vastly outclassed by military weapons like nukes, missiles etc.

sean

Exactly and it was also a last resort for Netero, but ofc he still came in expecting the worst because of what Colt told him

Netero's death and the minimal damage Meruem took was expected, but it does leave you with sorrow knowing that he couldn't defeat him. I love this fight nonetheless, seeing Meruem respect Netero and put his dominance on display.

Riley

Netero is a certified lover boy ❤️

Enma

not only that, they also mentioned that it was "low-budget and compact" because in the manhwa they might be using or hiding 100x times more stronger nuke for something else..

accomplice

The whole point of pointing out the bomb was low budget and cheap was to show that no matter how scary and threatning the ants seem to be, humanity is far more cruel and cold than the ants could ever be and the potential of destruction we are capable of far out shadows any threat other life forms could pose.

Zen

Remember the part in Yorknew City when Gon ask Chrollo, "How can you kill people who have nothing to do with you?" (while it was raining getting tied up by Machi). Then Chrollo started to think for an answer and Killua was confused for what Chrollo was blabbering about.. Then now SURELY Gon realizes the answer to his own question when he THREATENED to kill Komugi (who have NOTHING to do with him or kites death or anyone elses). Gon is finally in the situation where Chrollo was when he ask that question., "HOW CAN YOU KILL PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU?" Now it's time for us to THINK what was the answer to Gon's question now that he acted on it and shown in this past few episodes..

agree with Cannon, This has to be one of my favorite fights in all of anime, it's so well made and so unique too. I love it so much

kiiturii

You guys are really downplaying the strength of a nuke... acting like a nen attack should be stronger when in reality if we think about the real world for a second, this is literally a planet destroying truly terrifying power that we have. It was clever from Togashi to have the bomb in this arc as it serves to 1. show that humanity far far outranks the ants in terms of pure destructive capabilities, and 2. illustrates the depravity and evil that human ingenuity has been used to create. As far as having the hunters take care of the threat. The hunters are basically mercenaries, the big-wigs figured they could take care of it so they paid them to sort it out. The hunters drastically underestimated the ants' strength but like you said Netero wanted to take out Meruem on his own, the bomb was a last resort which he was certain would work in a worst case scenario.

I watch the intro all the way, and I appreciate it every time! Thank you for the discussion, guys. Seriously, I totally agree with Cannon. This fight was one of the best I've ever seen. Dope and beautiful, yet hopeless but hopeful. It is so different than anything I've seen in any Shonen anime, from the start to the end. I think nothing could have been expected. All the crazy mixed feelings this fight gave me, and yet the admiration poetic narration lines left in my mind, just made me appreciate watching this show. If you haven't watched this episode yet, don't read this after. It's a spoiler.↓ Netero had him in checkmate from the beginning. He prayed to God on his thumb and index finger but gave the middle finger to the king at the same time at 1:01:22. Such a beautiful fatal flower bomb. Thank you for all these feelings, satisfaction, and jew drops, Togashi. Gotta watch that episode again now! lol

Lily

netero literally being oppenheimer

leah

leah

I feel like the point of the bomb “killing” meruem is to highlight the capacity of humanity’s evil in juxtaposition of the ants. Like as evil of the ants have been how much damage have they really caused in comparison to humanity? Humans have created a device that killed 5.2 million people and the ants have killed maybe a few thousand. The ants aren’t even remotely comparable to the “darkness” that humanity possesses and i feel the whole theme of ants vs humanity is really highlighted with the nuke being the one to meruem. The ants are portrayed as evil the whole arc but look at what humanity has done. This is just my thoughts after watching. Masterful writing by Togashi tho major respect 🫡

The seemingly excessive narration on the nuke was to show how a relatively weak nuke could still decimate the most powerful organism in existence, where the king even after winning was willing to keep part of humanity alive, people at the top wanted all ants dead, playing into the theme of humans being worse than the ants.

C E.

The cultural context of nuclear weapons in a Japanese series can't be overlooked. Remember, the Emperor of Japan was considered to be a *literal god* for generations. After the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, the Allied Powers forced the Emperor of the time to deny his godhood under the threat of nuclear devastation. The post-war generation grew up learning that no effort of man or act of god could stand against nuclear arms. The implication of a cheap nuclear weapon being more effective than all of Netero's training and Meruem's godlike existence is pretty clear in that respect.

SoClose

In the original manga, it is written in Japanese characters (kanji) so the translation they used for the English version was "You don't understand a thing, about the limitless malice of mankind...!!" However, when reading kanji, there's usually multiple meanings. It could've also been translated as this, which they used for the anime, "You understand nothing, of humanity's infinite potential for evolution." I just thought that this is very poetically written. His last words emphasize the darker aspects of humanity, implying a deep cynicism about the inherent nature of human beings, while at the same time saying that humanity has a boundless capacity for growth and progress. Togashi really is a great writer. Another cool thing is that in the English dub they use the original Japanese version and in the sub they used the English translation version.
