To understand why people are so attached to Naruto you have to know it was many people's first real anime. It's with this one that people discovered cartoons could be epic and emotionally heavy. Especially with how easy it is for a younger person to empathize with Naruto. Yes everyone watched the occasional pokemon and DBZ on the TV but when it comes to binge-watching from start to finish, Naruto was for many the first. It's a show that still now can easily act a gateway to anime in general. To cite another big 3, One Piece is far more japanese in spirit and expression than Naruto. So it's an easier start when prior to this the most anime thing you've watched was Avatar, and not difficult to feel some familiar connection to. Appart from that specific fact, Naruto has objective qualities going for itself. It's a show that is able to combine many different moods in a good way. The amazing soundtrack helps a lot with that but Kishimoto also definitly knew what he was doing. We feel a sense of deep mystery and excitement as we see the characters progress through the show. The world in Naruto comes over as both familiar and friendly but also rough, boring and indifferent. In a sense it feels more real than most shows, like HxH or One Piece where there is a stronger emphasis on curiosity, sense of wonder and adventure than anything else. The dramatic aspect of the show is well done. Naruto as a character feels like a kid, and so do most of the other side characters we follow. They are both kind but also egoistic and everyone can act cold toward someone sometimes. The sense of love and comradry but also envy and jealousy all characters can feel towards each other is also something we don't see that often in the newer animes even though children and adults feel it all the time. It just all adds to a sense of reality and creates an intimate connection with the show. Ultimately this aspect is perfectly exemplified through Naruto's interaction with the world. Now of course this is not to say the show is not heavily flawed, because it is. The pacing obviously sucks, saying they overuse flashbacks would be an euphemism and my personal take is they overuse substitution jutsu and other cheap plot devices to subvert expectations and come over as smart in stupid ways. Shippuden is not much better, the stakes are overall higher but the pacing can be atrocious. It can come over as inappropriate to call Naruto underrated considering it's extreme popularity in the world, but in a way it kinda is. People that watched a lot of shows tend to dunk on it and imo they tend overlook it's distinctive qualities.

This anime was GOAT when I was a kid. Now, honestly, I would skip like 2/3 of it. There are certain arcs, and episodes that I like to watch from time to time, but rest of it is not up to date. Pacing is horrendous. I didn't mind before, but now u can feel every second.

I would recommend you to drop one piece, for me personally even the dog story is enjoyable because of his story. If you’re not enjoying the first episodes then you’re not going to enjoy one piece. For me is the story and the characters.

I know I am super late but your thoughts are justified. The thing is with weekly anime, since they have to air every week there's no down time. Whereas for seasonals they can plan out more time for specific episodes, in weekly if they do, they have to sacrifice another episode, or part of the episode. If they make a Naruto remake I truly believe it could be one of if not the best anime of all time.

the pacing of the show is due to the fact it was adapted so early on in the process so the show needed to stall to not catch up to the new chapters at the time. it can get annoying

Supercuts are bad, it ruins the intended viewing experience from the storyboard artists and directors. Also fillers aren't even a thing in the canon episodes lol what are people talking about??? The anime specifically designates episodes as filler to avoid this issue of mixing the two, unlike One Piece's approach. Also the Geks should watch the Novel adaptations in Shippuden once they get there, the guides mark them as fillers but Kishi has clearly intended for them to be canon content that he couldn't include in the manga.

Naruto heavily suffers from pacing and flashback issues to a fault. A lot of people will say "you need to watch how it was originally televised" But I heavily disagree. I'll always recommend "Rebuild of Naruto" to save them the pain of dealing with the egregious flashbacks.

Yea up until alabasta one piece actaully adapts like 3 chapters an episode which is great pacing for an anime. It doesn’t become noticeably slower untill enies lobby imo and doesn’t become truly bad until post ts.

For real though. Early One Piece pacing is actually pretty good in comparison in my opinion. It doesn’t start to get slowed down until Alabasta and by that point you’re already invested in the characters and storyline. My biggest gripe with the East Blue saga is the recycling of the same formula during the “collect the crew” part of the show...at least that’s what I call it lmao

i’m sure other people have mentioned this, one reason for the drawn out moments were to build suspense. i recall watching a few episodes of naruto when it was airing in the states and really buying into it because i guess narratively that was how it was done back then. also, the flashbacks could seem excessive on a straight watch through, but back then things wouldn’t always air in order/new episodes wouldn’t be out for weeks/months. i think it was a way to summarize prior episodes to jog the memory. tv was a whole different ball game back then haha

As a person who KNEW all the spoiler of Shippuden beforehand and still sat down and watched it, I was blown away at how good it was. The fight, characters, plotlines, everything is so EPIC. Genuinely, from the get go Shippuden picks up in quality. HOWEVER, there will be a lot pf flashbacks and the pacing will still be slower than jjk or aot. I would suggest to literally skip them and/or find some fancut versions were there are no unnecessary flashbacks

I wouldn't hold out hope for the pacing to get better. The pacing is pretty slow the whole way through, which is why I suggest watching Naruto Kai if you really get tired of it (https://narutokai.gitlab.io/episodes/naruto/). It's a fan edit that cuts down on all the filler and padding and flashbacks. Oh god the amount of times you see some flashbacks. Naruto is a legendary show but it is very flawed. It holds a special place in a lot of our hearts because we've been watching it from young, but rewatching it can drag.

Bleach has exponentially better pacing than Naruto. By episode 37 we would have been deep into the Soul Society arc, and in the middle of the Kenpachi fight. I don't care what you say, there is no doubt in my mind they would have enjoyed Bleach much MUCH more with the same investment of episodes. Take the rose tinted glasses off. Save for a handful of moments, pre-Shippuden Naruto is an absolute slog. It feels like there's no storyboarding or editors on staff for over half of the series. FMA Brotherhood is a "slow burn". Naruto is something else entirely.

If we’re gonna go down this logic, then they’re only 3-4 non filler fights from the prelims, which doesnt make any sense. Even if some of the characters are unimportant to the main plot at this point, they are still reoccurring characters whose skills and personalities are shown within the fights. I don’t think they should watch a supercut of the show as that just opens the door for them to do it again in the future when the shows pacing dips off again, which takes away from the experience of actually watching the show.

Carter and Cannon 100% valid opinions on OG Naruto. Jack just has that one piece patience lol. OG Naruto is hard. Because of the pacing you get like some crumbs of peak or crumbs of plot reveal, but the payoff is so worth it. You are almost past the thick of it and by the time you end OG, you're going to be so excited to start Shippuden. You will feel the vibe of a more mature show and the characters get so much deeper. Also like Brig said, some of the most goated villains in anime!

This may be spoilery so if Cannon, Carter, or Jack are reading this stop now! One thing I will definitely give to Naruto (mostly Shippuden) is that it definitely doesn’t shy away from character deaths and hitting hard with emotional moments. I feel like with early Naruto the emotional moments are kind of dulled and ruined by skirting around it making the same points just with slightly different dialogue. I think that’s where Carter is really getting lost too honestly

To me, it’s easier to get into OP cause things happen in the episodes way faster than they do in Naruto. And just to clarify I’m comparing first 75 or 100 episodes or so of both shows

I remember binging Naruto so hard when I was 14, and now rewatching it almost a decade after , I'm wondering on how I had the patience to do so. The pacing is terrible but I was at the edge of my seat. I think it's pretty obvious this pacing style on one hand was the norm back then and on the other it better fits with kids' attention spans. As we get older we want something that can grab us from the get go, if not... it's kinda unbearable. I think the best way to watch Naruto is with one finger constantly on the fast forward 5sec button 😂 but that's not very ideal for reaction purposes. Poor boys, stay strong the better parts are yet to come !

I'm gonna tell you guys my experience with NARUTO. When I was younger everyone was watching it but I never got around to it. As time passed I got out of anime and only during COVID did I get back into it. Obviously I started with a fresh new shounen at the time, MHA. I liked it a lot and then I was like 'maybe I should finally watch NARUTO'. At the beginning of the anime I was exactly like you guys even thinking that I didn't need to watch it and should stop because new gen shounen was doing everything better with better pacing too (that being said I thought and still think Demon Slayer is mid lol). I stopped watching it but then was getting recommended through Youtube Naruto and Shippuden's most iconic moments and people's reactions to them. I thought 'fuck it I'll never watch the actual show let me see what these hype moments are all about'. After witnessing a number of these clips I was shocked by how good these moments were even if I had minimal context. That's when I went back and finished the show and have never regretted my decision. NARUTO as a show has very many issues but when it hits it HITS like no show. Not even newer shows have reached the heights this show did. Btw if anyone still refuses to watch the show give the manga a look because in its purest form Naruto is an amazing story.

I enjoyed watching Naruto in my early 20s with binges, but it's something I grew out of since hitting my 30s. Also, it's not something I would recommend to former anime haters, but out of the big three, it was probably the best option. In regards to pacing, there are peak moments, but if I recalled correctly, they are mostly action-based, so it won't be like the second season of Vinland Saga where you were patiently world and character building for the first 8 episodes and then emotionally hit with episode 9 along with the rest of the season. I do remember the story and pacing does get better in Shippuden, but you guys decide what you want to watch.

Sorry this isn't related to Naruto, but I would love for you all to check out Mob Psycho 100. It has 3 seasons. But it's one of my favorites. The humor, the story, the characters, the art style, and the actions scenes makes it all worth it. It has a unique approach as an anime that makes it different from the rest. Both the dub and sub are really good. Honestly, I couldn't get into Naruto either. I tried a few times and it just wasn't for me. But I know it's a cult classic in the anime community :)

Hello, y’all, I’m sorry cause I know this is not related to Naruto and maybe you’ve already heard, but One Punch Man will actually have a season 3!! Trailers for it got released a few days ago (no release date yet but it’ll likely be this year?). I’m saying this cause I had said in an older post that there’s pretty much no chance for us to see a season 3 anytime soon but I’m surprised and excited about the news!! Just thought you guys should know since you might be reacting to it pretty soon.

They should watch the DUB, I am usually a SUB person. But Naruto has a good dub. The voice actors are chosen well and it's comedic moments are better in the dub than in the poorly translated subtitles.

All the big 3 have filler mixed into the normal episodes. This was all the weekly anime back then. Personally I think that’s the best way to get into it. Naruto is my favourite childhood anime but I think all of your criticisms were fair. Newer shonens like JJK really improved on a lot of the downfalls of Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach which I think makes them seem way slower in comparison. But I believe you will end up loving the show.

That’s fair. But I think it’ll definitely be worth it, considering the fast-paced newer gen anime they’re accustomed to, I would give them some more time to adjust. And for me the payoff in the long run makes the dragging on in some parts completely worth it. No anime they’ve seen has that payoff. Yes Chunin exams are popular but for me it doesn’t come close to what the story becomes, the cycles of conflict over love and the masked man who seeks to finally restore it. When I think back on the show, I don’t think of Chunin exams. I think of what it means to love

If you’re watching a show for as many episodes as this and you aren’t enjoying it much are you really going to force yourself to keep watching it when you could be watching something else you like better? If it takes too long to get to a central theme then that’s a very valid fault of the show in general. Also. Many people agree that the Chunnin exams are where Naruto starts to get good so I think it’s fair to say if they aren’t loving it after this arc then there’s a good chance that it’s just not a show for them. Okay so I’m gonna come at you guys with a bit of a hot take (Naruto fiends please don’t come for me) but I honestly enjoyed Naruto a lot more as a kid than I do as an adult. When I first watched it everything felt so cool and special, but as an adult I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t fall a little flat for me personally. However! With that being said, better is coming! You are about to get into the good stuff so just keep plugging away at it for now. BUT! If you aren’t feeling it after the Chunnin exams are over then please don’t feel pressured to continue with it. We want you to enjoy the anime that you watch as much as possible (at least I do) and I’d rather see you guys reacting to something you absolutely love than something you’re just okay on. If you keep grinding on though I think it will become more worth it as you go though

Talking about also pacing, we also have to keep in mind that back in the day Naruto was a weekly anime. Most animes you guys have watched have been seasonal animes, seasonal animes will always have better pacing than weekly ones because the studios have to make sure the episodes don’t catch up to the manga. Hence the filler and pacing issues. I feel like that’s why sometimes there’s a lot of flashback on these weekly animes because the watchers that would watch weekly had to get reminded of what happened in previous episodes and there wasn’t streaming platforms before so you didn’t have the means to watch episodes again.

I compare the start of naruto and start of ONE PIECE. And Naruto is a lot harder to get through for me. Naruto has really peak moments but the journey sometimes can be rough. Unlike ONE PIECE the journey because of the little comedy it has I can bare the pacing. Still though the peak of Naruto is worth the wait!

one of my all time favorite anime but i also thought it was a grind when i first watched it. Mind you i was watching it as it was airing. It does pick up pretty quickly after and i think watching it at a more consistent rate might help with the feelings of it dragging on. Just hang in there guys!

Yeah the buildup is slow but once everything is set it's gets super good. Also yes its been 37 episodes but this is a 500+ episode watch. Yeah. You bond with characters more, as there is tone of filers, and u get to know them so well. But, it is very painful watch if u want to binge it.

This anime was GOAT when I was a kid. Now, honestly, I would skip like 2/3 of it. There are certain arcs, and episodes that I like to watch from time to time, but rest of it is not up to date. Pacing is horrendous. I didn't mind before, but now u can feel every second.

the pacing of the show is due to the fact it was adapted so early on in the process so the show needed to stall to not catch up to the new chapters at the time. it can get annoying

Naruto heavily suffers from pacing and flashback issues to a fault. A lot of people will say "you need to watch how it was originally televised" But I heavily disagree. I'll always recommend "Rebuild of Naruto" to save them the pain of dealing with the egregious flashbacks.

Yea up until alabasta one piece actaully adapts like 3 chapters an episode which is great pacing for an anime. It doesn’t become noticeably slower untill enies lobby imo and doesn’t become truly bad until post ts.
