P.s. HOUSE OF THE DRAGON covers a 20 year era only. NOT 175 years! LOL. That’s not a spoiler😘💯. The story is that fight between these two Targaryen Houses. Green (Aegon) vs Blacks (Rhaenyra). Maybe they will eventually go to other periods in time and tell stories of house Targaryen. Aegon the Conquerer possibly. It’s fun though I mean having a sprawling story in Game of Thrones. HOTD has to open up to more locations in s2 I’d imagine!

Everyone's opinion is valid tbh... From the reporting, it really looks like GoTs season 8 was a despicable attempt by David & Dan to end the show quickly so they could hop ship to a massive payday on their terrible Civil War project (Which they abandoned anyway for a bigger paycheck from Netflix...). But we lived with these characters for a decade, it's valid to have enjoyed the conclusion of their epic journeys regardless. And TBH, people were upset about Season 8 only because they had too high expectations. It was clear from Season 4 onwards that as D&D needed to branch out into new material to wrap up the story within at least 2 less seasons than GRRM wanted, the quality of story heavily degraded. People just held out hopes D&D were following some super secret detailed story outline given by GRRM (which it turns out he offered every season, but they didn't even bother with after a certain point...). People think writers like JK Rowling legally have way more creative control of their adapted properties than they do, simply because studio execs often give them final say over things as a courtesy to keep them happy... But Game of Thrones cast/creators had 2-3 major contract negotiations that were reported throughout the show's lifetime, and each resulted in higher pay for cast/crew/D&D, according to reports, and less influence for GRRM. That won't be the case in HoD, considering GRRM has won his post-GoTs wrestling match with HBO execs in the press (the man basically took the head off of HBO execs by name in the NYTimes right after GoTs ending was panned, for example...). So people need to just stop complaining about whether GoTs is viewed too nicely or too poorly, and just take it for what it is.

Just a point I wanted to make (and this won't spoil anything), but just be aware that sometimes this show (GOT) gets the Song of Ice and Fire history/lore wrong lol (the writers of the series didn't always do a good job of staying faithful to the books/lore). For example, the events of HOTD take place approximatley 200 years before GOT, but there is a scene where Jorah will tell Daenerys that the dragons have been gone for 300 years (which is impossible since in HOTD there were many dragons still alive). So just be aware that sometimes things won't make sense from that perspective, but you can always ask us, your Patrons, for clarification on Lore stuff <3

This is largely a show thing. GRRM is excellent at writing nuanced women with strength and agency. In the book it’s clear that Arya and Sansa are very different but it doesn’t favor Arya over Sansa. Dany’s first night with Drogo is also a lot better - she isn’t raped, it’s consensual because he’s being very kind and gentle with her. and she stops being timid once she rides her horse for the first time. She feels free and tells Drogo he has given her the wind. That relationship is way sweeter in the books imo

GOT came out before the modern wave of identity politics. The show is much more like “Mad Men” in its characterization compared to a show like HOTD where it is clear there are other considerations than just plot driving the story. HOTD can arguably be viewed as an apology for GOT’s perceived treatment of women and minorities. There was a ton of backlash just to the Dothraki culture, let alone all the instances of SA in just these two episodes. I am not a woman, but I still believe GOT has a far more balanced and realistic depiction of womanhood compared to many other shows these days, including HOTD. With characters who can appeal to all types, even if yes there is a bit of cringy Arya/Rhaenyra Tomboy=good feminine=bad going on that can just be chalked up to attempting simple characterization to casual audiences for a show released in 2011. There will likely never be a “Feminism 101 speech” in GOT like Rhaenys gave to Alicent in episode 9 of HOTD. Feminism, female agency, and the patriarchy are major themes of GOT, but it is not the sole theme the way it is in HOTD.

Interesting point! I'm not sure whether you're right or wrong, but I always viewed early-show Sansa being about innocence, not femininity. Imo, Rickon, and sometimes Bran, are portrayed just as annoying and naive as Sansa. (And arguably, this is true of Rob, Ned, and Jon as well, but the show doesn't portray that clearly at first.)

I think a lot of people start blaming Sansa in this episode. But you have to remember she is 13-14 years old, she knows she will marry Joffrey, he is a prince and he was wounded. If she told the truth it might have affected her relationship with future husband/king and even queen. Plus Joffrey trying to hurt butcher's boy won't be counted as something worth to attack him. Nobody will scold him for being an idiot.

i agree. In truth ( and this is in no way supposed to be mean), I was getting pretty anxious, distressed, even frustrated, especially in ep1, with all the suggestive remarks. I love when reactors get the space to process at their own pace. Even if they dont initially say a lot, It doesnt mean theyve missed parts, just making sense of it. and its ok if they dont get everything, thats why people enjoy watching a series more than once :)

It’s most definitely a spoiler to talk about your opinions on a character. Just think about how they have changed their opinion about characters before when the story progresses. Saying that you like or dislike a character tells something about them and how they will act throughout the series. For example, if there were a character they really liked that the commentators hate then they would know that that character does something that changes everyone’s opinion and it influences how they are supposed to feel about that characters and can ruin plot twists. Just stick to discussing the episode in question.

dany's hands were hurt because she's not used to riding a horse for hours and hours, it was also why she was sore before (though the wedding night might have played a part of it as well). it's also why she's so tired, riding horses takes a lot more effort and muscles than you might think and to be thrown into riding all day when you either never have or barely have before, along with not eating like you're used to and being stressed, is utterly brutal. not to mention there are only less than a handful of people there who speak the same language of her and the two main people who do are her brother and jorah, so she probably feels completely alone (just giving context to why she's not smiling!)

Yes. The betrothal was agreed to as well as Ned agreeing to become Hand of the King. The show didn’t do a very good job of clarifying that, but the book does a better job of that. The one clue you get to this status in this episode is Joffrey telling the Hound that he is scaring “his lady” and then when Sansa says that her father only permits her one glass of wine with dinner, Joffrey tells her that his princess can drink as much as she likes.

Many times the peasants had no family name and were often known by their profession or their geographic home rather than a family name. This is somewhat based on European medieval history. It’s where we get a lot of our more common last names like Baker, Fisher or Smith etc. The following is a list of the bastard last names for Westeros by region: Crownlands Waters (this is the lands around King’s Landing) Dorne Sand (Southern most part & a desert region) Iron Islands Pyke (a group of islands off the western coast) North Snow (the Starks are Wardens of the North) Reach Flowers (this is the Breadbasket of Westeros & the Hightowers rule the largest city in the Reach. But they are not the ruling House/Family of the Reach) Riverlands Rivers (Its ruling family is Ned’s wife’s family) Stormlands Storm (the Baratheons are the ruling family here) Vale of Arryn Stone (in HotD Daemon’s 1st wife was from here) Westerlands Hill (the Lannisters are the Wardens of the West) You will notice that I only listed 2 Wardens. That is because these are the only two areas that are identified as having a Warden. It is rather confusing. But it seems like the title of Warden is something that the king can bestow. But separately, each of the so-called Seven Kingdoms has a Great House, which is identified as the primary House of that Region. All the Great Houses pledge their fealty to the King. And then every other House in each region pledges fealty to the Great House of their region in addition to pledging fealty to the King. The Warden’s seem more like a title given to the person who administers the law in the King’s name, like Ned did by executing the deserter from the Night’s Watch in the first episode. But since the Great Houses also fulfill that function and there were only two Wardens ever mentioned, in either the book series or the show, it is unclear what the distinction is between the two titles. I’m not going to go into who all the Great Houses are here, especially as you still have not met some of them. My purpose was to give you the bastard names for each region and give you a reference to someone from the region if there was a reason for you to already have a reference for a particular region.

Keep in mind that Sansa is thirteen in season 1. Being put in a trial like situation with such a power inbalance is just overwhelming. Also I guess because Cersei must've gotten her out of bed, so she probably influenced Sansa in how she should behave/ seeded pseudo-loyal behaviour to her future husband. Basically just a little girl. Arya is an exception with her rebellious nature coming from that backround I guess.

the highlight for me in this episode was tyrion and daenerys. with tyrion it kind of shows you that although he’s lannister he doesn’t agree with their actions. and with daenerys her wanting to establish some kind of control over drogo within their relationship. just tells you that although she’s timid she’s still a targaryen , that sense of wanting power is in their blood.

I like how Game of Thrones depicts these things as people often emulate what is around them, especially at younger ages.
