2024-03-21 18:16:59 +0000 UTCWow, yes true I never thought about what Carter said; the thing with the two 9.9 episodes having such opposite endings is very interesting. The "villain" having a good ending, and the "hero" having one of pure tregedy. Meruem taking his last breath smiling beside the person he loves, and Gon mourning the death of a person he loved. Both tragedies in their own way, but one is sweet while the other is bitter. What a good observation.

2024-03-21 17:46:54 +0000 UTCmeruem and komugis ending gets me everytime,,🥲🥲 people talk about the end credits scene getting them, but im ngl,,im in tears as soon as komugi is, if not sooner shjdnx the way that meruem keeps asking if shes still there,,no longer needing to stand alone at the peak of the world, but instead just wanting to know that someone else is still there with him,,simply wanting the one he cares for to hold his hand, and call his name 🥲🥲 the way that komugi "sees" him with her hands for the first time, when he can no longer see her, and holds him through the likely realization that he is inhuman, without even a moments doubt or mention of it,,like his humanity is silently acknowledged without words, regardless 🥲🥲 also loved the discussion of how gon and meruems storylines parallel eachother too + in regards to the talk about the bombs and such, i can kinda see where carter is coming from, but i also think they and the opening scenes play an important role in the message theyre trying to get across,,japanese history clearly having a large affect on the description and impact of the bombs,,the depiction that no one, not even meruem and his guards could entirely escape their affect,,the fact that humans made such things to use against other humans, and that we're just as bad, if not worse then the ants - which i think can definately be argued in many ways, considering that unlike ants natural state, theoretically speaking we have morals and empathy. ideas of right and wrong, vs simple survival or domination,,personally i enjoy the thought provoking aspect of it all, though i can understand that its just not what some people were expecting (which imo can be good in its own ways too i think) - granted that seems to be a bit up carters alley still, so hopefully with a bit of time the arc can settle nicely for yall, despite the less cared for pieces!

2024-03-13 11:11:58 +0000 UTCHere's a copy-paste of a spanish comment I read on youtube regarding the scene in which Meruem remembers Komugi that perfectly encapsulates the feeling: . "He heard his name and his mind tried to capture in images what Komugi is for him, with the shape of the cosmos, of butterflies that open their wings, of white roses, with the shape of the sun and beauty. And he was stunned by so much light. This is love, something that escapes logic, that revolutionizes you and is made of the same material as dreams and art. Metaphorically, his brain quickly sought to relate that feeling to the beautiful things he had seen in the world, because they are made of the same thing". One of the most beautiful scenes I've seen in any type of media. I don't think I've ever seen unconditional love represented so perfectly and with so little words; hell, in his image of Komugi, he doesn't even remember the snots in her nose, her imperfections are irrelevant to him.
Gaboxxy
2024-03-12 17:42:32 +0000 UTCYes, although this "poison" is even worse than radiation because it's contagious and acts quicker, while also slow enough to cause a perfect chain of death. And it makes sense that, as powerful as Meruem is, he is still affected by it because like you said, it's inspired by radiation, and radiation is actually deadlier the more complex and organism is, which is why humans are more affected by it than most animals.
Gaboxxy
2024-03-12 17:37:38 +0000 UTCJust to add, obviously the "poison" is a reference to the radiation left behind by a nuclear bomb

2024-03-10 23:25:05 +0000 UTCHonestly the whole talk about the overall power scale and problem carter has with how hunters were made insignificant because nukes exist etc. Jack is right it was there to show exactly this to take power from what hunters are because thats exactly what they are, they aren't global super powers they arent the avengers rather they are hidden, only a tiny part of the population even know about things like nen. The thing is it seems like nen is everywhere because we followed gon and killua who's goal it was to get stronger the whole time they permanently gathered at hotspots for nen users, heavens arenas 200th floor, york new city auction, greed island and now kites obligations tieing into the chimera ant arc. And after all this knowledge about nen even this supreme beeing meruem someone who completely breaches the limits of nen we even knew about facing the pinnacle of humanity someone who has trascended human limits this guy netero he was just a "puppet" of the goverment because powers like nukes produce so much force and are so devestating that nen is still nothing but an accessory and exactly the reason why nen users dont run the world. Now there is something I can only tell you about after you have finished hunter x hunter so I guess its spoiler I guess or maybe brig can read it if he watched up to the last episode? so SPOILERRRR WARNING : : STUDIO GEK MEMBERS DONT READ THIS ONLY BRIG MAYBE IF HE WATCHED THE LAST EPISODE ASWELL I CANT REMEMBER IF HE WATCHED THE LAST ARC ASWELL : : SPOILERRRR WARNING Now as for tearing down this whole concept and the boundaries of nen is done purposely to introduce something thats coming up in the manga and already has been mentioned in the episodes you have already watched before it is not random at all or unfiting it is actually quite genius and I think the best way to level up your world building and power scaling in all of manga and it ties directly into the overall story progression. Also remember meruem can absorb the nen of others that is his hatsu he is a specialist who has an infinitely better version of chrollos ability without the conditions and even adding the consumed nen to yours so, wait that doesnt make sense right? Why can he be so overpowered without conditions or anything that doesnt fit into the overall concept of nen and the scaling that has been established, well it was mentioned at the beginning of the chimera ant arc that those chimera ants are a forgein species that came from a "different place" and this exactly what this aludes to in this "place" things are different the scale of everything is different because hunters or more like our whole conception of nen is just a fragment of smth bigger. Maybe i'll delete this later and type smth like this under the last episode again to avoid spoiling anything but I tried to be vague in case they accidently look at this part of the comment for a sec I didnt name any special name or words.

2024-03-10 22:10:20 +0000 UTCWell I think that's the whole morality that hxh is exploring here, people have developed and can use these destruction weapons; they have all this power, but they don't use them anymore cause they're inhumane. Human's malice can be a scary thing, scarier than the ants. So at the end of the day which are worse? The ants for being on top of the food chain or humans malice (nukes)?

2024-03-10 17:03:41 +0000 UTCNice for mentioning it though, i fully understand not remembering to do so in the moment too, id forget all the same I think Meruem and Komugis final moments are my favourite moments in the entire show outside of gon and pitou, if not equal. I think the fact that stupid nect time preview with that music and gons happy cheerful voice was actually left in was the genuine worst moment of the entire series. I cannot belive they let that kill the mood so so badly. The episode was meant to end in silence and be so impactful, it still was but everyone sees that preview and it takes you out of it INSTANTLY i hate it so much

2024-03-10 16:57:23 +0000 UTCi wish there was none. I hated those 2 phantom troupe filler episodes this arc i wont lie, HxH is at its peak when it doesnt focus on the earlier characters for me

2024-03-10 16:53:14 +0000 UTCI have such mixed feeling on all the pre chimera ant arcs, and the final arc after watching this arc. Like this arc has many downsides and bad moments still, but overall its by far the best arc in the series for me, and it IS the series for me, when i think of HxH i only think of this arc, it is its own show tbh I enjoyed many moments in the previous arcs, but aftet this arc i find it extremely hard to go back and watch the older ones, i think its just the overall goofiness and weirdness i dont like compared to this arc, i love how its always dark for the most part from start to finish, its so much more serious with such higher stakes, the music plays huge role in the atmosphere too, i kinda hate the old upbeat goofy hxh ost but all the chimera ant arc music is so good and different i think the end of this episode shows what i feel so perfectly, that ending with meruem and komugi is absolute perfection, 10/10 and genuinely so upsetting and affects me a lot when i think of it, but when it cut to that stupid goofy funny happy "next time" scene with happy gon and that music it genuinely annoys me so much, i cannot belive they felt that was acceptable to even keep in for this episode ngl i just dont like how this isnt the final arc, it feels so wrong to go back to "old hunter x hunter" after this, even if i like parts of the next arc, it just never sits right with me just moving on from this arc the way they do idk

2024-03-10 02:25:25 +0000 UTCI really enjoyed your discussion at the end, I'm really glad Cannon and Carter liked it so much! I was worried that you wouldn't like this episode and this ending for Meruem. I would have liked them to live and see the after but it's probably better like that, when I think about it, a scenario where they would have survived seems strange to me you imagine "they lived happily, played gungi every day and had... No" in reality it wouldn't be that simple. It’s a great conclusion to Meruem’s story.
devakira
2024-03-10 02:15:26 +0000 UTCDespite the fact that Poof could read the emotions of others, he was paradoxically the most antipathetic, particularly towards Meruem's emotions and desires as well as the deep attachment he had towards Komugi. It's only at the end that he realizes Komugi's importance to Meruem. "This is how deeply he values her." Finally Pouf had a miserable death he died like an insect, poisoned and crawling on the ground surrounded by the humans he hated so much...

2024-03-10 02:13:33 +0000 UTCParadoxically palm became a better person and more "human" by becoming half ant.

2024-03-10 01:02:49 +0000 UTCI don't think it's outlandish for people to be stronger than Meruem. It wasn't mentioned in your reaction, but while Meruem may have been a culmination of all these beings and his race along with having the ability to absorb nen which is huge, he was basically a child. If he was given more time to practice and actually use his nen and absorbed more people, especially if they were stronger than the couple people he ate, I think he would have been much more powerful. As it stands though, we saw him eat a little girl and 2 chimera ants. That's it. Then he has a massive increase from absorbing part of his royal guards ands gains the ability to fly and read people's mind basically. At the rate we've seen the chimera ant progress, I think he could've and would've been much stronger and I think you have to keep that in mind when considering the show's future.
Phoenix
2024-03-10 01:01:12 +0000 UTCAnd one other thing I wanted to mention is the progression of how the ants are portrayed in the story. Originally we see the ant side of them more, then like I mentioned the show starts introducing more human characteristics but in a way that doesn't change how the viewer feels about the ants, having the ants want to learn names and developing other human characteristics builds intrigue but we still dislike the ants as characters. However, throughout this arc the amount of "humanity" within the ants very gradually increases and builds to the point where eventually the audience views them sympathetically and to me that choice seems very deliberate. It seems like early on the author wanted to plant the seeds of the ants having human characteristics while still painting them as antagonists that need to be eliminated so that he could surprise the audience by comparing them to humanity once the humanity within the ants increases while Gon succumbs to his rage.

Rodrigo Figueroa
2024-03-10 00:49:44 +0000 UTCI started writing a super long comment talking about why I love this arc but I realized it would probably turn into an essay if I said everything I want to so I'll try to keep it short lol. I absolutely love this arc, to me it stands as one of the best in anime and is one par with the best AOT arcs, Marineford in One Piece, Slave Arc in Vinland, etc. Mereum is tied with Askeladd as my favorite anime character (I love layered, conflicted antagonists) and Killua is also top five for me because of his excellent character progression throughout this arc. The Chimera Ants as a race are fascinating to me, I love how the show focuses on their more animalistic "ant-like" traits at first such as their group dynamics and structure before then slowly and subtly introducing human characteristics such as identity, pride, search for meaning, forming of connections, loyalty, etc. The choice of having a race that possesses both human and ant characteristics in order to directly compare these different traits is just so genius to me and makes moments such as Pitou protecting Komugi or Pouf's maniacal monologues or Meleoron choosing to avenge his father so interesting. And then the choice to explore the ant traits in Gon is fascinating as well and so subversive for the genre, I haven't watched that much anime but I haven't seen any other anime deconstruct the resilient, loyal, optimistic shonen protagonist archetype besides Hunter x Hunter. Idk to me everything in this arc is so masterfully executed, there are some flaws such as Palm's date with Gon or the story's pacing suffering at times but all in all this arc is one of the greats and is huge part of the reason why HxH is a top 5 anime for me at least.
kingkoopa98
2024-03-10 00:45:25 +0000 UTCYeah that was a crazy statement for sure. Wing even says Gon is a 1 in 10 million talent. Heck I would say that’s even an underestimate given what we see in his adult form, he is certainly an exception among Nen users. You’re not gonna see most of the Nen fodder from GI pulling off a Gon and killing Pitou lol.
ssj4rit
2024-03-10 00:25:55 +0000 UTCThe ending song “Hyori Ittai” means “two sides of the same coin.” IMO it underlies how ant/human are similar and both have their good and bad that should be acknowledged. Malice (Rose) kills Meruem, but compassion/love (Komugi) changed him in the end. Both, for better or worse, were instrumental in the success of humanity.

2024-03-09 23:45:09 +0000 UTCLoved your outro guys, they should be this long more often, when the moment calls for it! I wouldn't mind it at all. 2024-03-09 23:38:17 +0000 UTCI didn't like how they made the happy go lucky song after such an emotional peak. They could've gotten rid of that for this episode. And it's such a hard show to compare to others since the arcs are so different from each other it almost feels like a different show.

2024-03-09 23:26:27 +0000 UTCAt first, Meruem doesn't tell Kumogi that the person who stays with him will die. He just followed his heart - I want to play Gungi with Kumogi - and he didn't consider Kumogi's thoughts. But while playing Gungi, Meruem is once again touched by Kumogi and he tells her the truth and lets her choose. Every time I rewatch it, I'm always amazed to realize that every moment he's with Kumogi, Meruem becomes more of a "human" than a "beast" under her influence, until death comes.

2024-03-09 23:26:04 +0000 UTCI don’t think it was ever a 9.9. It’s always been a 9.8 since I remember watching it in like 2021. 9.8 still a high rating for sure tho

2024-03-09 23:12:28 +0000 UTCNah you just haven’t thought about this, I did. You literally reinforcing my point. There’s already 2 versions, each with completely different art style, direction, and atmosphere. What the hell makes you think there couldn’t be another one down the line? There’s literally a new One Piece in production. HxH could do a yearly seasonal arc by arc. By the time it gets to the election arc it would be around 7 years. Should give Togashi enough time to at least finish the Succession War.

2024-03-09 21:24:45 +0000 UTCThe fact that he, the strongest, fell in (love?) with kumogi shows reality. Loving someone doesn't mean you have to be with the greatest person or best in everything. It's about someone who makes you happy and contented. We can see how meruem and kumogi is happy with each other, playing gungi. Despite of everything. Despite of the death itself. It's the feeling that you express towards them that makes it wonderful and incomparable. This is a slow-paced story, but we can't change the fact that it's cookin'. I know some got bored because of it, but salite to those who finish this masterpiece. I love how they talk about the screen time of Palm and welfin before, and now conclude that they're not just a side character. Also, i'm very emotional about meruem's and palm's conversation. He's willing to beg just to see her for the last time. While palm is very in denial at first, it breaks her heart to see this scene. Your king are willing to do such things for kumogi. 🥺

2024-03-09 21:13:46 +0000 UTCFrom r/HunterXHunter "Did anybody notice kokoriko(a gungi technique) means King itself? This technique try to win the game by making King piece isolate. But Komugi tells him this technique is Shiro( road to death) a while ago (ep 104). Isolated king must die. But she shows him a new tactics to save king in ep 135. It means "king doesn't have to die". In reality, king didn't be killed by Netero's nuke attack. But king counterattacked her and shows that isolated king must die after all ( by poison). Komugi finds a new counterattack and said "I'll go with you". King is not alone anymore. Meruem tells her he can't win even once(He couldn't beat kokoriko). It means Kokoriko is not shiro anymore. She saved the isolated king. The black screen at the end has a couple meanings The dying king has lost even his sight. His mother named him Meruem as "Light shining on everything". It's stated that "His en shined into the palace as if it's sunshine" and "He manipulated light particles to search Palm in a house" a while ago. He got a god-like light power at that moment. But black pages suggests that he doesn't have any light now. This is a view that Komugi was seeing from the beginning. She couldn't see any light. To her, he was just Meruem. After all, those pages show us that he lost everything but gained what he trully wanted. He didn't need any soldiers, palaces, countries, power, strength, even his sight(as Komugi). He just wanted to play Gungi with Komugi. This is the same to her too. She had nothing besides Gungi. Nobody loved her and couldn't play Gungi as well as she did. She was lonely Gungi King(Queen?). But she gained Meruem. That's why she cryed when he counterattacked her new kokoriko. She once needed to create and kill tactics on Gungi by herself. But she gained the perfect opponent and can create tactics with him(I guess to create tactics suggests to create a baby as she said kokoriko is her baby.) The one "Light shines on everything" loved (and was loved by) was a blind girl. What a story! They started a new(the last) game in darkness. "1-5-1 king". "9-5-1 king". Then it was stopped. These two king pieces don't go anywhere anymore. Two kings (King of living things and Gungi King) are together forever."

2024-03-09 19:58:01 +0000 UTCThat scene never fails to make me cry, I'm a mess again watching it with you guys XD There's something about watching Meruem gain humanity over the course of the arc and watching him die when he finally became 'human,' feels really tragic. I really liked Meruem by the end, and I wish he didn't die honestly, but I think this was the best way for him to go out and the proper conclusion to the arc... Ugh such a sweet scene, and one of the best moments in the whole show <3

2024-03-09 19:10:30 +0000 UTCHey, I’ve never really commented but I feel like I gotta weigh in specifically on Carter’s nuke … concerns. You gotta think about what the show has told us about the Rose when they first introduced it. Firstly, as previous comments has said, the show tells us that production of the Rose has been banned and a few are being held by government. What was also shown, (but wasn’t explicitly said), Netero was able to obtain that nuke, probably not without difficulty, because he’s CHAIRMAN of the hunter association. I mean there was a whole scene where some big government officials literally told him to end the threat no matter what. So clearly these people in power only really had to bring out the Rose because it was pretty much known that Meruem was a huuge threat to humanity. Why is this important? Because I think Carter, you’re stressing out because you’re afraid two people will be fighting in Heavens arena or something, and someone’s just gonna pull out a Rose bomb (is the gist of what I’m getting from what you’re saying). But from my previous paragraph, you know that’s not gonna happen. Like normal hunters, or even really strong ones aren’t gonna just casually have access to a freaking Rose bomb. It was used by Netero based on the situation and threat to humanity, and involved people and doctors that probably took place behind the scenes (even though they showed us some of it). The Rose isn’t gonna show in the normal hunter conflict that happens in this world. Meruem was a situation where it was humanity vs. a singular threat, but everything else in the show so far has been hunter vs other hunters or obstacles. Like kurapika isn’t just gonna stop his heart and pop off a Rose bomb just to kill a troupe member. So yes, while the Rose is still a possibility and I understand your line of thinking, you’re letting something, that was very logical in the scheme of the plot of the show, stress you too much. Also Brig stop spoiling stuff man. You might not be saying anything specific, but at this point in the show, people are SUPPOSED to think that meruem is the strongest Nen we have or might ever see. Love the content. Keep it up dudes!

2024-03-09 18:45:50 +0000 UTCI mean I don't think it's that they're scared of showing emotion. Crying≠Emotional, I'm sure they all still felt the sad tone of the scene. Like Cannon said lmao it's his nature that he lowkey wanted Meruem to brawl out with his new nen. I don't think it would have made much of a difference how they watched it as there was another video I can't rememebr which one, where Carter was tearing up.

2024-03-09 18:04:12 +0000 UTCI like that Meruem ended up getting rocked by a nuke, cause it doesn't matter how strong you are or how much military might you think you have against a nuke you're gonna get absolutely rocked no matter what. It's humbling and it puts things in perspective, cause reality is at the end of the day if someone absolutely wanted to put an end to a country or planet they could. Honestly, I've never thought about getting a nuclear bomb dropped on our heads, but it could happen which is absolutely terrifying lmaooo

2024-03-09 17:15:01 +0000 UTCI think the series moves away from pure power scaling (or aura volume), and does more with ability compatibility. Otherwise it’s not sustainable, Dragon Ball kind of gets away with it but still.

2024-03-09 16:42:40 +0000 UTCFrom Reddit 'I believe this opinion stems from a misconception about nen and its role in Hunter x Hunter. The Hunter x Hunter universe does not revolve around nen. Nen was never presented as some kind of ultimate power that surpasses everything in existence, that allows the user to be invincible to everything except nen. Yes, nen can allow one to block bullets, and even RPG blasts if one is skilled enough, but that is nowhere close to the absolute superiority some people seem to believe nen grants over everything not nen related. Time and time again, Hunter x Hunter has demonstrated that nen users can be challenged and defeated by conventional means. I think Uvo is a good example of the limit of strength you can get with nen. What I mean is, the dude tanked a rpg point blanked and laughed, had the strength to shoot a projectile out of his mouth with the power to go through someone's head, and lastly made a gigantic crater with what Machi described as "just a normal punch with a little nen added", also the dude was offended when someone compared him to a tank. It's impressive, but nobody should really be expecting anything more then that when nen is involved. Hell most characters can barely take a gunshot, at that moment they should have realized tanking a rpg isn't normal, let alone a nuke to the face.'

Meruems development throughout the whole arc to the point where we start to sympathize and root for him is astounding. And him and Komugi switching roles at the end is just beautiful. Meruem losing his sight, constantly asking if she's there and having to use his spiritual en around the room to see. Komugi having her eyes open during his final moments, finally gaining her own sight and seeing him for the first time by touching him. And yet despite seeing he's not human, she still stayed. People dislike dune bc of it, I think that's stupid asf personally but to each their own. Never on my initial watch or rewatches of this arc have I ever felt like I just wanna skip past everything. It's consistently captivating and the peaks of this arc would absolutely not hit the same if the time and care wasn't given to every aspect. Ima stop dickriding in this comment section tho

2024-03-09 10:24:31 +0000 UTCAll the critiques when it comes to pacing and presentation is valid. Again, it’s the reason why I think there’s gonna be a new rendition. It’s just a matter of time until people realize there’s a market for it. If a new, seasonal version of HxH with better pacing, animation, visual storytelling and art direction, darker more gothic color palette, non spoilery OPs and EDs with thematically fitting songs, better background art and sound design for a more immersive experience….It would take this series to a whole new level.

2024-03-09 10:12:09 +0000 UTCas an ex-shounen lover, I came into HxH a few years ago hearing nothing but “This is the best shounen.” So obviously expectations were high. The other thing I heard was CA Arc was goated. While I liked some aspects of HxH at first, it was a far from living up to my expectations. When Chimera ants arc started I was interested at first, but as it came up with bloated content that I was deeply uninterested in, I started getting really frustrated by it. So when I finally got to the “good parts” I was already beyond annoyed, although I did like and appreciate them, it didnt entirely shake off the annoyance with the show and pacing, that I had overall, and it sat on the back of my mind the entire time. It left me with an overall impression that HxH was mid with some good moments, and up until ~12 episodes ago of this rewatch, I still held on to that statement. But now on the rewatch, I was able to just enjoy it for what it is, and I must concede that the payoff that we got from these 12 or so episodes is insanely good. Whether it is worth the painfully drawn-out setup is another thing, but no questioning that the payoff is there.

2024-03-09 09:59:41 +0000 UTCI get Carter’s point about not knowing what to think about the nuke solution and what it means for the importance of Hunters, Nen and the future of HxH. That said, obviously the idea of nukes and radiation poisoning is something that is closely related to Japanese history, so having it be a commentary on how monstruous nukes are is kinda cool I think. Also thinking about how the most powerful, perfect being was still helpless against cancer or radiation poisoning. These are real life issues, and this end puts them into perspective, which I think is kind of cool, and a bit scary
Asbjørn Kennedy
2024-03-09 09:47:26 +0000 UTCCan I just say that I think all of Carters critiques of the arc are valid, I personally disagree with all of them chimera ant arc is peak fiction for me, but I also understand that it's not for everybody. Carters anxiously likes it but not at that same level About the pacing issues, I use to think the same on first watch, but on second watch I realized that peaks of the arc wouldn't hit as hard if it wasn't for that build up. And those hit perfectly hard and it feels if something were to change it wouldn't be the same feelings for the peaks. Now for the nuclear bomb I understand the point, but if it was some Nen user that defeated meruem it tie as well wit themes of the arc. That's why netero said "I am not alone" when he activated the bomb. He actually admitted defeat himself but that humanities malice defeated the ants. I think it is very poetic that I wouldn't change a thing Also I think meruem is the strongest being in the hxh universe, anyone that says otherwise is just comping xD

2024-03-09 09:22:24 +0000 UTCThe other thing you have to realize is that neteros whole thing is that his attacks are really fast. None of the characters ever talk about how physically strong the bodhisattva is, so it’s entirely possible that there are other hunters out there with stronger raw physical power. Futhermore broken specialist abilities exist, hell netero and the king aren’t even immune to manipulation, so they risk getting fully controlled. There are a ton of possible ways to defeat even post rose Meruem without resorting to someone who’s just flat out stronger
za ab
2024-03-09 09:19:50 +0000 UTCWhile watching the after discussion there are a couple things I wanna add. First off I don't know if its brought up but in the after credit scene when Meruem keeps asking Komugi if she's there, it's because he went blind. His constant need for reassurance that she is still with him and her consistent desire to stay with him even with the knowledge that she will die. It's so beautiful but so fucking heartbreaking. Second for the royal gaurds Brig has a good perspective on it. They all do have different ways of showing loyalty, but that ties into the major theme of humanity in this arc. Pitou has easily the most drastic change after the attack. She goes from being possibly the most unhinged and ant like of the three to an incredibly empathetic person. She understands the king the most, she's brought to tears after witnessing the effect that Komugi's injury has on him. She only tries to kill Gon out of loyalty to her king as she understands the threat he poses, but she feels sympathy for Gon as fucked up as that is. She's probably my third favorite character in the whole anime. Youpi wavers ideologically. He has no human side but he has an honor code and can respect humans enough to spare them even if they may be an enemy to his king. He is still incredibly loyal obviously as after the Rose he completely shifts perspective and views humans as only an enemy. Pouf is also an incredibly well written character but yeah I hate him too. He never changes his ideology of wanting Meruem to fulfill his role as king and never wavers from his ant side.

2024-03-09 08:47:34 +0000 UTCCarter to touch on your point about the potential of bombs in this series: the bomb that Netero used is one of a small few that exist in this world. This isn’t a spoiler cause they touched on this before but the production of the Rose stopped once it was discovered just how deadly it actually is. So it’s not something that would be an easy option to use I don’t think. Also! That whole topic really made me think about Netero in a new light too. If he knew he had the bomb I guess I’m just confused how he morally decided that he would let all of the other hunters potentially die in a fight that he could easily win alone. Maybe he just didn’t want morale to get low if his death from the bomb didn’t end up working. I’m not sure but it’s interesting to think about for sure

2024-03-09 08:43:03 +0000 UTCidk if this is a hot take but i think it really is a case of the peaks kinda carrying or rather making some of the lulls worth it. like ok yeah, i think it could have been more succinct. whether you think it could’ve been 5, 10, or 20 episodes shorter, i think a lot of people can agree that certain parts dragged a bit. but i thank GOD that i watched those episodes every time i think about gon vs pitou or netero vs meruem or meruem and komugi’s relationship or literally just meruem and gon as characters. so it’s kinda like how can i not love the arc that gave me all of that 🤨

2024-03-09 08:39:13 +0000 UTCFirst time commenting, but something interesting to add: the line where Komugi mentioned how she may not be worthy, but would be willing to offer herself to the king, that’s an old-fashioned way for Japanese women to accept a marriage proposal.

2024-03-09 08:26:22 +0000 UTCdont know if y'all mention this in your discussion as i'm still watching as I type; but if you notice at the very end komugi is touching meruem's face and holding his hand by the end, and in doing so she 'sees' him for the first time and realizes that he isnt completely human, and she still holds him and calls him by his name anyways coupled with meruem slowly losing his vision as a result of the poison, those two die together as complete equals.. this arc is such a masterpiece and culmination of togashi's writing i could write paragraphs about every little detail

2024-03-09 08:19:36 +0000 UTCwhat ALWAYS makes me sob is the end credit scene. i think it’s so beautiful that in their last moments meruem and komugi reach a new level of understanding and love for each other (HOWEVER the viewer perceives this love). meruem, literally the strongest creature in the known world, is dying a slow death and begins to lose his sight, which forces him to rely on his other senses like sound and touch to perceive komugi’s presence. and komugi, someone who has lived her entire life like this, touches his face and finally “sees” the person she has come to love🥹 and i think it’s important to point out she doesn’t even FLINCH at his outward appearance. it seemed like she felt his arms, his body and then his face and i think that it was obvious to her that he wasn’t human (or at least not normal) but she doesn’t care. this is a person she loves enough to die with. that’s it ☹️

2024-03-09 08:05:05 +0000 UTCNothing interesting here.. just boring stuff! A perspective of what really DEFINES us as humans is not by LOOKS but by our ACTIONS. A dog saving a child is more human than a man trafficking children's. The man was an ACTUAL human being but has a heart of a monster, but the dog was the one that LOOKED like a monster but acted differently. This is what's happening to the ant's AFTER consuming humans genes "emotional instability" that Youpi experienced and so as the other ants. The real Diego said that good and bad will always exists wherever you go or whoever you meet and "In this world filled with evil, all that matters are the things that make us happy" (PAUSE.. just let those words sink it in your head for a bit)... Meruem and the Ants found their humanity in the end, but were exterminated all the same (by humans). Diego was a vile dictator responsible for countless atrocities against his people, but was nonetheless able to retire to a life of peace and happiness, WHILE the fake Diego was proly made by nen or something else. The things that you see in these episodes are depictions of REALITY, NOT a lot of anime show's this picture of poverty, inequality, corruption, death, all the things that you can relate right now hearing the NEWS of war from Russia, Palestine, Gaza, Ukraine, etc. Children's' are dying, people are starving, they show this here in hxh because it's REALISTICALLY BASED IRL (maybe that's the reason why I like this show), they show this examples in other anime's too but it's still too much animated fantasy you can barely tell the difference.. All we can do about it is ACCEPT, Gon accepted his fate, the King, Kumugi, Pitou, Gyro, etc. - to live or die is NOT something to FEAR it's about how you USE your time to DEFINE your own happiness while you're still breathing and not waste it.. - just like Meruem and Kumogi! I couldn't ask more for a better ending.. Some people likes to watch shorter anime's but personally I prefer the longer once. A great example of a not being rushed and OUT OF CONTEXT death! Since, the very beginning of this Chimera Ant Arc to the end of it, it was well written even the so called "boring parts" did actually mattered.. . even the so called game "Gungi" mattered.. Rest In Peace to all the characters that passed away in this arc..💐❤️🔥 As our home boy - Bean said "A job well done!".. 🫡

2024-03-09 08:01:03 +0000 UTCYou can't just nuke all your problems away lol, they solve like 1 specific type of problem out of millions. I love the inclusion of nukes in the show as it helps to ground the universe in a more realistic setting, same with the political aspects of the show like the world powers paying the media/hunter association to cover up the ant outbreak. I do get where you're coming from but I don't care at all about power scaling, this was the only arc of the show that had world ending scale and consequences so the use of the ultimate weapon is totally appropriate, and within the narrative helps to illustrate humanity's monstrosity and genius. Most of the stories in this series are at a much much more personal scale that no government would ever care about. This show is almost never about grand plots for world domination or whatever so the Hunter association's position as a powerful (but not world dominating) entity, full of unique and interesting characters with equally unique motivations fits perfectly well into the established world.

2024-03-09 07:56:18 +0000 UTCIm ngl I don't even know how you can be confused about feeling emotional in this episode. Meruem is one of the most human characters at the end of this arc. His development is the best of any antagonist oat. This episode for me is like the most tragic shit ever and it makes me bawl every time I watch it. The end of LOTR is the only other scene that gets me this bad. Gon and Meruem both reach tragic conclusions at the end of this arc. Gon loses his humanity and goes to the darkest place imaginable where he would give up his life to satiate his rage. Meruem gains his humanity throughout the arc and realizes his purpose has nothing to do with ruling the world. Through gungi Meruem and Komugi develop a genuine love for each other that is so unbelievably pure that just the utterance of her name after his amnesia filled him with happiness. I don't want to write an essay or anything as I already have in a million other comment sections for this arc but Meruem is the greatest antagonist oat, and this arc is untouchable. Also RIP Toriyama

2024-03-09 07:35:53 +0000 UTCNo matter how many times I see it, I still cry. Episode 135 is an episode I will never forget. Meruem spends his final moments with the one he loves and admires most, Komugi. Despite his imminent death and the pain he suffers from the poison, his sole concern is Komugi's well-being. In the midst of their dire situation, they discover solace in each other's presence, treasuring the precious time they have left together. When Meruem is first introduced, he embodied the epitome of strength and authority as the king of the Chimera Ants. He is portrayed as ruthless and formidable, never letting his guard down and displaying an unwavering confidence in his abilities. However, as Meruem now faces his impending death due to aftereffects of the bomb, he experiences a profound sense of vulnerability and mortality. In his final moments with Komugi, Meruem exhibits a rare display of humility as he confides in her about his fears and regrets. He no longer sees himself as an invincible king, but as a mortal being with limited time left to live. In the end, he learns the true meaning of empathy and compassion, ultimately finding redemption in his final moments. Despite being different species and positions, they find understanding and acceptance in each other's presence. As they bid farewell to each other, their bond remains unbroken, a testament to the power of compassion and empathy in overcoming even the greatest of obstacles. I just wanted to add this, Rest in Peace Akira Toriyama, the Father of Shonen Manga. Without him, this masterpiece most likely wouldn't have been made, along with the Big 3 and many other great series. Like countless others, Dragon Ball was the first anime I ever watched, it introduced me to a new and captivating medium for art and storytelling. For this, I am eternally grateful, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope the anime industry sees how fragile life can be and give their creators more time and the help they need. Like Oda said, I pray for his soulful rest in peace. May heaven be the joyous world he envisioned.

2024-03-09 07:35:28 +0000 UTCI keep XMen and Marvel in mind when I watch this. These powers (nen, ability) are used in the real world. 2024-03-09 07:32:40 +0000 UTCI love how Meruem and Komugi parallel Gon and Killua, “the light that illuminates all” “you are light, sometimes you’re so bright and I can’t look at you” Meruem and Komugi dying in a lovers suicide which Killua stated he would do for Gon in chapter 286 togashi cooked so hard, there’s definitely a lot more but I cba to add them all

2024-03-09 07:21:21 +0000 UTCthis arc is honestly one of my favorite arcs in anime just cause the messages that are shown through out this arc. also, the character development and realizations that are shown throughout the arc are unmatched for me. for Gon you see how drastic his character "changed" throughout this arc but when you rewatch the show you realize with little hints here and there that Gon has ALWAYS been this Feral and was just a ticking bomb waiting to go off. For Killua, it points out how much he has changed since the beginning of the series to now. KING Meruem is one of my favorite antagonist in all of anime and episode 131 is in my top 5 best episodes of all time Also this is a super duper hot take lol but i lowkey lost respect for Netero when he did the bomb for 2 reasons, 1. he damn near killed MY KING and 2. it was such a dirty underhanded tactic to do after losing a 1v1. i completely understand why he did it and everything. i just didnt respect it.

2024-03-09 07:10:27 +0000 UTCi’m so glad carter brought up the point that meruem, the strongest living being, spent his final moments with probably the weakest living being rather than like, dying in battle or something. he went from someone filled with rage and power etc. to someone so kind and loving etc. and komugi is the reason for it so him getting to spend his final moments with her is so full circle (and will never fail to make me cry every time lol)

2024-03-09 07:07:55 +0000 UTCone of my favorite little details in the arc is that with Meruem's evolution he fulfills that meaning of his name, with his en literally being light. The way they tie it all back to him mother naming him is so so well done.

2024-03-09 06:41:24 +0000 UTCOkay so to keep my answer as short as possible while still covering as many points as I can: This arc is the culmination of everything that HxH is as a show and the messages it wants to convey. A lot of people don’t love the pacing of this arc but for me, I honestly think that everything is done in a way that adds suspense, intrigue, and investment into all of the different aspects that get explored in this arc. Looking back on everything that happened from the start of the arc (and let’s be real the start of episode 1) it all fits into place perfectly and it all plays a role in the outcome of the events of this arc. I do think that some juxtaposition could have been rearranged to not take viewers out of certain moments. However, doing that would take away a lot of the suspense and investment that builds up in those lulled periods of time. The themes that this arc (and show in general) tackle are easily some of the most layered and philosophical that I’ve seen in any anime. The fact that it can take you through Gon’s descent into a monster all the way to Meruem’s discovery of his own humanity and have it hurt as deeply as it does just shows how well crafted an arc it is. Not only that, I think it raises some very interesting questions about the true form of humanity. Is humanity strictly a concept for humans or can it be more than that? I think the comparisons between Gon and Meruem are enough proof that humanity transcends beyond a species and that just because someone is human that doesn’t mean that they have humanity inside them.

The culmination of everything in this arc and as a show in general really comes together in this episode and it hits hard. I don’t cry often from anime but this one got me good lol

2024-03-09 06:29:54 +0000 UTCThe bomb was poison, the aftermath was also poison. Pouf and Youpi got sick because they were just hanging out in the area while they looked for the king, and because they were all hanging out in close proximity to each other, they were just radiating the poison into each other that entire time, so it accelerated their deaths

2024-03-09 06:25:41 +0000 UTCmasterpiece is really all i can say. this will be my third hxh watch with yall and i can definitely say for my first watch, i struggled with the pacing and actually ended up watching a lot of chimera in 1.5x speed and overall, it was my least favorite arc just because of that AND i was so happy with the king died bc i hated him and his intentions from the beginning but upon my second rewatch, i realized its paced the way it is for a reason. and i also came to REALLY appreciate the king too. he went from being top 10 least favorite characters to top 10 favorites. my main issue alongside the pacing in my first watch was the lack of caring for the side characters. i just could not get myself to care about ANY of the newly introduced characters, even knuckle, morel and all them. but again, upon rewatching, you come to realize just how important they are. i love all the underlying themes and messages within this arc too which in my naïveté, i didn’t pick up on first watch. netero is such a goat, meruem is top 3 anime “antagonists” of all time for me, and hxh is my second favorite anime of all time simply because of how much this arc and these characters mean to me. sorry for yappin LOL

2024-03-09 06:20:12 +0000 UTCGod Meruem and Komugi’s final moments are some of the most moving scenes in all of anime, I quite literally shed tears for them and still get very worked up every time I watch or read it on my own.
andythesaladgod
2024-03-09 06:18:02 +0000 UTCIt is poison but its specifically radiation. And the scenes in the beginning go to show that humanity is just as depraved, self centered, and broken as the ants. It shows people living the high life and partying while other starve on the streets. It shows people killing other in war and then their own people forming factions and oppressing the survivors. This whole arc shows the duality of humanity and how we arent any different on a large scale from the ants we are so scared of, the only thing separating us is who is in control. Specifically with gon and meruem they are reflections of each other. Mereum gains humanity as his character progresses and gon loses his humanity as he progresses. Hell of story and a hell of a way to talk abt some really deep topics if ur willing to read into this show deeply and explore it thematically.
