Togashi is famously a trans ‘ally’, and very often does his best to represent gender identity in his manga. I mean, he’s married to the creator of Sailor Moon which has some of the most beautiful and effeminate male characters to exist, as well as a trans character, so I’m not sure why people are surprised that a male shounen author can have opinions different to theirs. See this video here for the many different times he has included gender non-conforming characters in his work: https://youtu.be/9w6fvtgxpGs?si=0Ix7WGf7Gb1YPp3X . In fact, trans identity and gender non-conformity is far more common in Japanese media than it is in Western media, regardless of how "good" that representation is. Think: Tokyo Godfathers, Lovely Complex, My Hero Academia, Fire Punch, Attack on Titan, Komi Can’t Communicate, etc. All these shows have very clear trans or non-binary representation, it’s not uncommon at all. Gender-bending is it’s own genre in anime and manga! There are plenty of video essays and explorations on the topic if you know how to open a search engine. If you are just bigoted and don’t want to see trans representation in your media because things different and other to yourself scare you, that’s your own issue to work through. You can just be honest and say you’re transphobic! But stating as plain facts that a mangaka well known for trans representation is not doing the thing they very much purposely set out to do it just silly and bad media literacy.

2024-04-02 16:04:10 +0000 UTCRather than explaining myself, because I now understand the confusion with Alluka, I am going to copy and paste below someone else’s well explained answer: This confusion is actually a translation error. in the original Japanese nobody but Killua uses gendered language at all for Alluka. The family doesn’t view her as human and so doesn’t assign her any pronouns. They’re actually using the word Kyoudai which means siblings. The translators chose to call her male based on the 2004 data book which lists all the Zoldyck children as male. But here’s the problem. Those data books are notoriously unreliable. They’ve been known to differ and outright contradict the manga on multiple issue. On top of which Togashi loves retroactive continuity. He may have just changed his mind. So in conclusion Alluka may be transgender. It may be a translation error. Of Togashi may have forgot/ changed his mind about what he set up. It’s my opinion that she is not actually transgender based on two pieces of evidence. First of all, Killia never says anything about it. Which I feel like he would have. The family disrespecting Alluka’s gender would be on his list of gripes with them. But it doesn’t seem to be. Second is Killua’s conversation with Morel. Morel refers to Alluka as Killua’s brother. And Killua doesn’t correct him. But Killua told Morel about Alluka and would have referred to her as his sister. Morel would have no reason to think that Alluka was biologically male. But Killua just accepts his statement. This leads me to believe the intent was altered from the original Japanese. *Credit to Nico Diangelo on Quora*

2024-04-02 15:48:30 +0000 UTCAs far as I am aware, it’s actually because Alluka is trans. She was born male, as were all the Zoldyk siblings, but Alluka identifies as a girl - which is why Killua, the only sibling who cares about her and loves her, is the only one who calls her by those pronouns. The rest of the family use the incorrect pronouns because they don’t care about her as a person (and obviously trans acceptance is still iffy in a lot of parts of the world both irl and in-universe). HxH is well know for being some of the first trans representation in anime and is highly regarded for that fact!

2024-04-02 15:39:21 +0000 UTCWhat Mckay said about not getting to see other character we love is so true cause of where the anime ends unfortunately, even though it's a solid end point. I wish they'd start animating where the manga picks up again because all those characters are much more featured.

2024-03-31 07:04:14 +0000 UTCI think Alluka is a girl. Nanika is “something” or an “it”, but Alluka is actually Killua’s little sister. The mixup of pronouns happens often with some characters in anime. Plus, Killua knows Alluka the most, so it is safe to say Alluka is a girl.

2024-03-23 04:35:08 +0000 UTCIf I remember correctly, Alluka appeared in the beginning of the show when portraits of the Zoldyck family were shown, so it is not a character made simply for Gon’s sake.

2024-03-21 21:13:05 +0000 UTCi will not lie, Gon dying because of the chimera ant arc wouldve been the perfect time for the series to end thats one thing i dislike about hunter x hunter is main characters always get healed or nothing matters in the end with their injuries. Even kite couldnt stay dead, Netero is like the ONLY time a non side character dies for real There needs to be more consequenses, Gon shouldve at least had to live without an arm
James Perrott
2024-03-21 13:16:02 +0000 UTCYou are blinded by ignorance if you think there can be zero problems with Togashis writing. Hunter x Hunter was never 100% perfect and has always had flaws. Alluka being introduced even if there was 1 mention of her before, is objectively still an "asspull", she still practically came out of nowhere and is the most convenient thing ever to heal gon when no one else can That doesnt mean its bad, but you cannot just ignore all criticism when its valid criticism.

2024-03-21 13:11:21 +0000 UTC@BigManSirob I don't understand why you provided this lmao. What I'm seeing here is even more evidence stating Alluka is a biological female. Official tankobon/bestiary references, official card game and video game references (not third party, official licensed products), direct references to the kanji used indicating female sex/gender (the same thing around the world in every country, only supposedly different over the last 10 to 15 years and only in the United States somehow). Only toward the end of the latter half of this text does the writer insert their own opinion. They even state "Alluka is a transgender girl, that's the simplest explanation" after providing nothing but literal DIRECT "simple explanations" of Alluka being a biological female. TL;DR this link has only done more to reinforce my argument.

2024-03-20 22:48:13 +0000 UTC@Sam M You hit the nail on the head. The current new wave of trans stuff is no different than "shipping" in much older series, though tbh that was far more tolerable because both parties acknowledged it was based entirely on feeling. "Pitou is trans!", "Alluka is trans!", it's just the absolute worst and, I know it shouldn't, but the fanbase often affects how people enjoy a show (fortunately most of the insane activists are focused on My Hero Academia right now and leaving the rest of anime mostly alone for the time being).

2024-03-20 21:10:44 +0000 UTC@Zappy "that doesn't understand the difference between gender and sex" Stopped reading there. I've heard this bunk a thousand times already, and it's not true, nor has it ever been. Again, the foundation for the trans argument is based on feeling, opinion, "well I think", etc. Sex and gender are different words but they are not different things. They mean the exact same thing. The trans argument ends the moment you reject this ridiculous proposition, and it should be rejected, because it's objectively false. The foundation for your argument is based entirely on subjective nonsense.

Its nothing new even though you believe it to be. But ultimately, this is an anime reaction channel, and you really shouldnt be putting your personal politics here that have nothing to do with whats going on. 2024-03-18 19:59:52 +0000 UTCThe starting foundation for an argument needs to be strong, fact based and rooted in logic. When the foundation is poor from the get go, and you start trying to stack layers upon layers on top of it, the foundation gives way and the entire thing collapses. This exemplifies the trans debate. Opinion, feeling, people "should" this, culture "should" that, are not the makings of a solid foundation. It is pointless to argue this further because these are things that cannot be argued. It is akin to trying to convince a child that their favorite toy shouldn't be their favorite. Re: Alluka specifically, show me exactly where it is stated in any official series documentation or creator statement that the suggestion you're proposing has merit. Not a reddit post, not a fan wiki (unless it cites the aforementioned), give me something concrete. Otherwise we apply Occam's Razor. The simplest explanation is the correct explanation.

2024-03-18 15:25:59 +0000 UTCNot exactly, Alluka is still referred as a 'brother' and called 'him and he' (sometimes it, but not always) by the Zoldycks. The fact that Killua refers her as a girl is simply 'cause she is trans. The Zoldycks refusing to do the same is just another proof of them having completely given up on respecting their child in any way ever since they learned about Nanika.

2024-03-18 10:43:03 +0000 UTCI actually disagree with some people saying this was foreshadowed since s2. I mean maybe a fifth Zoldyck sibling was set up, but that sibling being an all powerful genie definitely was not hinted at all. That being said, I think there are story elements provided that at least explain why her power wasn’t used earlier. Namely, Illumi’s needle manipulating Killua for most of the show + Killua doesn’t want to reveal Nanika’s existence to the world. Then of course the main aspect that Killua doesn’t like using her power and is the only one to treat Alluka as a person, not an object to fear or solve problems, and he is only pushed to use her power when his best friend is near death (which just goes to show how much he values Gon).

2024-03-18 03:54:14 +0000 UTCEven manga readers don’t know all the details, at best all we can say is (manga spoilers below) Nanika is an Ai creature from the Dark Continent, probably brought back when Zigg Zoldyck went to the DC with Netero. The Ai calamities attach themselves to people and codepend on them. That’s what happened to Alluka. As for why Killua can make wishes with no repercussions, it probably has to do with some conditions he satisfies (he truly loves Alluka and won’t abuse her power). But so far we haven’t gotten all the details.

2024-03-18 03:53:20 +0000 UTCOk so about Alluka’s gender , what I understood and I could be wrong : is that her family doesn’t care about her as a person because of how dangerous she is so they identify her as a he aka the “something/nanika” in her . 2024-03-18 02:13:47 +0000 UTCIm glad Carter noticed Pariston looks like Bisky. I have a theory as to why that is. Every character who is suppressing their true form or their amount of Nen has the same look to their eyes as Bisky does when she is in her kid form. Pariston also has the same eye look to him so im convinced he is hiding his true nature, either his real body or his amount of Nen. Its always bothered me how Pariston looks so normal even though he is second in command, like even Netero has that anime old guy look to him but Pariston legit just looks like a normal dude.

Im sorry I can understand why it seems like an "asspull" but yall gotta see my man togashi is an S-Tier writer and he wont pull off stuff like this. nanika, the chimera ants, gons rage moment they are all well planned out bits that are not random at all, I mean yes with the anime context its kinda hard to believe but in the manga you realize how much sense it all makes and even now you atleast should be like "there has to be more to it" based on how consistent togashi has been with his writing up to this point. I mean he crippled his main character in a battle shounen ofc he has to bring him back someway but the way he did it is genuinely genius because at the same time he sets up way more than just that which is manga spoilers so I cant mention it but just trust this man, the mangaka behind hxh is not an idiot I personally consider him to be in the top 10 writers of all time across all of media. Also alluka has been there from the beginning and you were able to see her back when the gang pulled up after the hunter exam to bring killua back, she just has been kept in the shadows for this moment + this episode it was mentioned that illumi manipulated killua with his nen ability so he forgots her.

2024-03-17 17:18:57 +0000 UTCI know it's a translation issue, but in the original Japanese the family doesn’t assign her any pronouns. They’re using the word "Kyoudai" which means siblings. 2024-03-17 16:52:16 +0000 UTCI’m probably reading way too much into it, but I thought Alluka was two-spirited more than anything else, or at least that it was what Togashi was doing with the character. Alluka is a girl because the other possessing spirit is a girl. Also, Alluka’s clothes feel like broadly indigenous inspired and then you add the whole “new world” imagery of DC. I don’t know, maybe it’s not that deep and Togashi just made basic trans character without a whole lore and mythology behind, but at the same time Togashi also does like to sprinkle random and niche knowledge like that in his stories.

2024-03-17 15:44:11 +0000 UTCI just wanted to explain Alluka's gender in more detail since i've seen a lot of people being confused about it (someone do correct me if I make any mistake). There isn't any mistranslation in the anime, Alluka is indeed heavily understood to have been born biologically male but identifies as a girl. We see this through the fact that all the other Zoldyck members refer to Alluka specifically through "he"/"him" pronouns and use the word "brother" to describe her as a technical member of the family. Killua is the only one in the family who refers to Alluka with "she"/"her" pronouns throughout and refers to her as his "sister", and as a "girl" later on. My understanding as to why different characters use different pronouns is because, in my view, the rest of the family members do not care about Alluka as a person, and as you saw in these episodes, they don't even really consider her a part of their family. Thus, not only do they not respect the gender/pronouns she identifies as, they don't even respect her enough to refer to her as a person, so they even go as far as to refer to her as "it" or "that thing", without even separating her from Nanika/"Something else"(the creature with black eyes). On the contrary, Killua does respect her and loves Alluka as a person and family member, on top of the fact that he knows her best, so naturally he uses the pronouns she prefers and sees her in the way that she personally identifies. In other words, Alluka is a canonically trans character, which is very endearing to see! Thank you for the reactions btw, I always love watching them and hearing your different and honest opinions.

2024-03-17 14:20:01 +0000 UTCShe didn't make any requests. She was just innocently asking for things. So when she said "pet my head", that was not counting as one of the 3 request because she were not using her power. As for how could Killua still make a whish is gonna be explained later. He made a wish there to trick them into beliving that those were the requests. Thats why Milluki said "so a computer wasn't that big of a deal".

2024-03-17 13:44:16 +0000 UTCAlluka was born a boy, but she prefers to be a girl ❤️ I don't know if you guys continued with crunchy subtitles but you can see that only Killua treats her as a girl, everyone else just refers to her as a boy. Alluka and Nanika (something) is a character I didn't expect to have during this arc, I won't say more until you guys finish tho, but she didn't just popped out of nowhere, we already knew that Killua had another sibling that didn't showed up during the Zoldyck family arc.

2024-03-17 13:24:55 +0000 UTCAll I say about the origin of Alluka’s power is that there’s a reason the U.S. Customs and Border Protection has laws against bringing prohibited lifeforms and restricted cursed items into the country

2024-03-17 12:25:30 +0000 UTCi didnt understand why Killua could make a wish. I thought if she calls him brother before making a request it is alluka speaking and not "something" therefore there werent real requests made to make a wish am i right? Or was Killua just bluffing?

2024-03-17 12:11:01 +0000 UTCIt’s more than just “gender identity.” Alluka herself refers to Nanika as a “her.” Implying Nanika is a feminine spirit. Their souls are intertwined, that’s why Alluka acts feminine despite being biologically male. That’s how you properly write a fictional trans character.

2024-03-17 09:52:02 +0000 UTCHer power is painfully misunderstood. This notion that she can grant any wish is simply Killua’s assumption. The limitations were showcased in ep 139. Let’s put 2 and 2 together. 1. She’s skilled at destroying, but fixing isn’t her forte. So she must make contact with anything she needs to heal. So you can’t just ask for something preposterous like “cure all the illness in the world.” 2. Variables have to cross for a wish to actually work. You need an X for a Y. As emphasized by the fact that rather than making money out of thin air, she teleported an already existing plane carrying cash. So basically, say you made a colossal wish for the entire planet to get destroyed. Her power can’t just blow the planet up willy nilly, but what it can do is change a meteor’s trajectory, and you get the point. 3. Time investment is a big part of her power as Illumi explained. The people you love the most is the initial collateral, followed by those you’ve spent the most time with. So it’s not a coincidence that Killua’s the only one who can control her power. Because not only is he the one Alluka / Nanika loves the most, but Killua’s also the one who’s spent the most time with her. I genuinely believe that’s an unspoken condition. Think about it. Also Alluka’s introduction serves as world building, and foreshadows BIG things in the next arc. She’s not just here to conveniently save Gon.

2024-03-17 09:38:13 +0000 UTCI love Alluka/Nanika as a character. Yes her wish granting power is really really OP but it comes with serious, catastrophic drawbacks.

2024-03-17 07:10:18 +0000 UTCAbout the Conveniency of just adding an additional Zoldyck sibling, I found this answer on Reddit... "A little known piece of HxH trivia is that all of the Zoldyck brothers' names start with the last syllable of the next older brother, end in the first syllable of the next younger brother, and have a "llu" in the middle. Illumi. Milluki. Killua. Alluka. Kalluto. But up until Alluka's introduction, there would have been an inconsistency between Killua and Kalluto's names, as Killua ends in "a" and Kalluto starts with "ka." This means that as far back as the Zoldyck Family Arc (1999) Togashi hinted at the introduction of a fifth b̶r̶o̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ sister named "Alluka," who wouldn't be introduced until the 13th Hunter Chairman Election Arc (2012). If that isn't foresight, I don't know what is." Plus as other people have already mentioned, Alluka & her powers are a segue into the next Big Arc which was in Togashi's foresight as early as the first manga chapters he wrote https://www.reddit.com/r/HunterXHunter/comments/7n6lpz/allukas_existence_hinted_at_as_early_as_the/

2024-03-17 07:09:37 +0000 UTCI get feeling like its kinda bs this all powerful force coming out of nowhere. In my opinion togashi had this planned even before the chimera ant arc and probably since we first saw that picture of the zoldyk family. Huge props to jack for noticing Alluka in the back of the photo the first time he saw it!!
Alex
2024-03-17 07:03:25 +0000 UTCthe fact that Mckay said the name of the future/next arc plus no one really picked it up is wild. Also it explains the reason for alluka's power and a good sigway into the next arc. Personally I haven't read passed the anime, mostly because I know I would have to re-read from chapter 1 to fully understand everything e.g. parts of manga were removed from the anime and Togashi barely releases chapters due to his poor health.

2024-03-17 06:33:07 +0000 UTCanother Trivia, the names of the Zoldyck Brothers has a pattern, the last syllable of their names is the first syllable of the next born: (in order) illuMI - MIlluKI - KIlluA - AlluKA - KAlluto

2024-03-17 06:02:29 +0000 UTCThey did show the sibling when we first met the Zoldyck's in the same photo they showed us again, which I really like and when first seeing it wondered where the rest of his family would come into play. It does seem a little bit like a "macguffin" but given foreshadowing for it and future things that we can't say, I think it's within reason. Loving the vids as always

2024-03-17 05:53:58 +0000 UTCAlluka is biologically male but started self-identifying as a girl from a very young age. Killua respects this, being the closest person to her. But as Milluki says, "(Killua) doesn't think like us". The rest of the Zoldycks are basically sociopaths. They don't even see Alluka as human because of her power, of course they ignore her gender identity.

2024-03-17 05:50:40 +0000 UTCLoving all the uploads💕 Also; the pronoun switch serves to emphasize that Killua is the only one who cares enough for her to respect her preferred pronouns. She obviously dresses and presents in a feminine way but the rest of the family does not even see her as a person with agency and humanity so they do not acknowledge that

2024-03-17 05:45:33 +0000 UTCAlluka and Chimera ant arc are the prologue to the manga arc after the anime. It’s not the author just came up with the idea of Alluka to fix Gon. Not sure if you remembered or not, the Zoldyck family photo appeared in the Chimera ant arc, the Phamton Troupe episode. Togashi was already thinking about a crazy story and an insane world building. Almost everyone in previous arcs show up in the manga, bonding with each other. But unfortunately it’s not finished.

DAI
2024-03-17 05:27:14 +0000 UTCIt's unfortunate, but the reason that it feels like such an asspull with an all powerful Zoldyck sibling appearing that could heal Gon is because it's supposed to be an intro to the next arc in the manga. It's implied later where "Something" or Nanika may have come from, but we never get to see it in the anime.
