Corlys was the one who sought to marry 12 year old Laena to Viserys, not Rhaenys. Rhaenys appeared unenthusiastic, at best, about the the idea. Rhaenys didn't want to marry Laenor to Rhaenyra, but Corlys did and they were married. Then there's the time when Rhaenys asked to have Baela named heir to Driftmark and Corlys said no. Corlys was fighting in the Stepstones for 6 years. Once he woke from his coma, she didn't seem to keen about that absence. Yeah for sure equal partners in marriage… lol Name one way that Rhaenyra being Queen is “progress” given that she is lauded as the single exception across the realm. Rhaenyra being the only one above the laws of the realm isn’t progress for anyone other than Rhaenyra. You don’t have to defend an episode that was widely disparaged as being the worst of the season and the closest thing to Season 8 we’ve gotten since 2019. This is the same episode where Otto says “the door remains shut until we finish our business” and then no less than two minutes later Harold Westerling (who’s character should be long dead by now) walks right out the door with zero repercussions. Haven’t even mentioned the fact that it reduced the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms to a foot fetish victim for shock value… Just calling a ♠️ a ♠️.

Rhaenys is always shown as an equal partner to Corlys in everything and specifically in arranging Laena's marriage. She even determines which side House Velaryon took in the war. But again all of that is immaterial, her speech is specifically about Alicent using her power to prevent progress. Nah, it makes total sense because Alicent is not just doing men's bidding in general, she is specifically fighting for the rules of succession to not become more egalitarian towards women so she herself can maintain her power. That’s funny I was so not into the Targaryens at all when watching this thought Dani was bleh so much I wasn’t sure I wanted to watch HOTD. I’m glad I did because it was good but it still didn’t change my opinion of Daenerys at all. It’s just funny to think about. If i watched it first I wonder if my opinion would be different because at this point even almost done with season 1 that’s all they know is HOTD. They compare it a lot but then again there is so many stories and houses and things to get to know in GOT where as there really isn’t much else to go with in HOTD besides green or black.

Way more happens in season 1 of GoT vs. season 1 of HotD. HotD takes place over the course of about 30 years, and by the end of this same episode all we've had a lot of the same story beats (some incest, some murders, death of the king and a coup attempt). The difference with GoT is there is stuff going on beyond Westeros (the Others and the Dany plotline with the Dothraki).

Maester Aemon is the Mad King's uncle, not his brother. This episode teaches you not to take any character for granted in GOT. It's crazy how much they can get you to care for a character in one season. This world is crazy, y'all haven't seen anything yet! For me, I'm very interested in the royal family(-ies) and the succession, it's fun to learn the history. George R. R. Martin built this world and its lore almost like no other.

Aemon was a middle child and became a maester, thinking that the line was secured, but then his older siblings died, but he refused to go back on the oath he took at the citadel, so he actually doubled up and joined the nights watch, so his younger brother Aegon (Egg is his nickname) could take the throne. The throne passed to Aegon’s son, Jaehaerys and then to his son, Aerys (The mad King).

I love this explanation! Ned's death hits so hard I remember putting away the book for a week or so afterwards. The only thing I disagree with is HOTD not accomplishing the same gut-wrenching feeling with Viserys' death. We knew from the very beginning Viserys was going to die, and he was showed almost dying a couple times. His death was slow and agonizing, not quite as shocking as Ned's, and that is the difference. For me personally it was scarier to see Viserys' slow deterioration due to an illness since it's something more likely to happen in real life and something I am afraid of

Baelor is the statue that Arya was clininging to in front of the Sept. He was ninth Targaryen King. They called him Baelor the Blessed or Baelon the beloved - he was a religious man. The sept stairs is where Ned was beheaded. The Sept is where most coronations take place. Also weddings and other religious ceremonies. The man who grabbed Arya and had her look away is Yoren. He came from the nights watch looking for men to take back with him. Ned knew he could trust him with Arya because Yoren shares brotherhood with Benjen Stark, Neds brother.

Amazing reaction u felt pretty much exactly how every single fan felt seeing that for the first time. Ned was universally everyone’s favorite character in season 1. His death is quite possibly the best/craziest plot twist in television. No other show truly can reach the highs of GoT besides maybe Aot at certain moments.

I was going to say, he's definitely not his brother. And yes, they completely removed Jaehaerys II (the Mad King's father and Maester Aemon's nephew). Maybe they can retcon it by ol' Aemon being a bit senile and skipping a generation on accident lol. They leave out plenty of other things with the Targaryens in the show too (I won't mention them). It's understandable though as the Targaryen family tree is incredibly complicated in the books. HotD took some significant liberties, but many were done to simplify or make things easier for the audience and they don't impact the plot much or at all. One example is the Veleryons being white in the books and black in the show.

incoming yap session because as much as it sucks, i love the execution of ned’s death this ep is one of the reasons i think got s1 > hot d s1. hot d is a visually stunning show and i enjoy the writing too, don’t get me wrong, but to make me feel so much emotion for a character 9 eps in is a feat hot d didn’t accomplish even with sweet old vizzy. and it’s important to note that although ned’s death is shocking, it was never outside of the realm of possibility and it actually seems likely quite a few times (“i’ll tell you about your mother the next time i see you” like come on, even though that’s not exactly indicative of time, we know that ned is never going to see jon again). at several points during your guys’ reactions someone said that ned is cooked and that it’s kind of inevitable bc it seems so glaringly obvious at the time. but then, they offer you the slightest bit of hope with varys’s and cersei’s proposal. now, rather than focusing on what is ultimately joffrey’s decision, we’re made to focus on ned’s inner dispute. this is both assuring and nerve wracking because we’ve seen how much ned values his honor but we also have seen the strength of the love the starks share for each other, each of them quick to jump at each others defenses. so when the scene comes and ned is forced to choose btwn love and duty (love that dialogue btwn jon and aemon btw), many viewers are just hoping that ned can push his honor to the side for the sake of his life and the realm. and he does. he throws away a huge piece of his identity and it doesn’t matter because the fate of his life and the realm as a whole rests in the hands of an entitled, homicidal teenage boy. so ned dishonors himself, his head is taken for it, with none other than ice, his family sword (ouch), and the credits roll 🫠

Actually Maester Aemon is the Great-Uncle to the Mad King. His brother was the Mad King’s Grandfather. However to simply things the show runners took out one generation from the books. So in Game of Thrones they made Maester Aemon the Mad King’s Uncle. But another show set in this universe is in production right now. It will be called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. And it takes place during the time that Maester Aemon is a young man. I’m hoping that show will replace the lost Targaryen generation that this show removed. After the ending of Game of Thrones was considered a flop by many, they have gone back to being more accurate to lore of George R.R. Martin’s world. House of the Dragon has done a good job of that in Season One. So I’m hopeful they will continue to do so.
