That scene in the alehouse was actually more brutal in the books Arya overhears Chiswyck in the bar telling one of his “funny” stories that after the hands tourney when Loras cheated to beat the mountain they stopped at an alehouse on the way back to the westerlands the brewer keeps talking while all the mountains men know to shut up when Gregor is in one of his moods the brewers 18 year old daughter is fetching them all drinks one of the mountains men tries to sleep with her the brewer confronts the mountain about what one of his men did and says “My Layna is no whore ser.” And Gregor looks at him and says “she is now” he then tosses the brewer silver rips the daughters clothes off and rapes her on the table in front of her dad and brother who was killed trying to save her then each of his men take turns as they laugh after they were done he demands the silver back from the brewer saying she’s wasn’t worth it to top it off the daughter was actually 13 so they really toned it down for the show

After that it stayed in Kings landing but it was kept save as a potential bargaining chip with the Starks. In fact one of Robb's demands to the Lannisters in the books was the return of Ice. But as the Stark army is now defeated Tywin is free to reforge it and gain Valyrian steel for his family. The Lannisters used to have one of their own, the sword Brightroar, but they lost it centuries ago.

@lola She's absolutely underrated. People are more drawn to characters who have epic trials, victories, moments, etc... Sansa gets none of that in these seasons. Her character is incredibly nuanced compared to most of the rest of the cast.

Just wondering but what makes you prefer the new actor?? I’m just curious, I mean no disrespect. From what I’ve seen, it seems like some people are just annoyed of the way original Dario (Ed Skrein) looks. Here’s my perspective. I think Ed Skrein has way more charisma, not just more charisma but he actually seems to have a lot of charisma and an aura about him. The new actor just has that plain generic handsome look, like he’s constantly cast in CW shows or as the romantic lead in Hallmark movies. Yes, the new actor ultimately does a solid enough job making the role his own…but it just pales in comparison to Ed Skrein. Ed’s portrayal was also more booo accurate as the character had a flamboyance about him but still had that confidence and was a bad ass, while the new actor just retains the cockiness somewhat but lacks an aura. I think that people in high up in film and Hollywood agree with me as Ed Skrein got cast as important villains in large films with powerful creatives behind it: Deadpool, Alita Battle Angel and Rebel Moon, while the recast actor seems to be stuck as that generic looking handsome guy though he did did get lucky enough to be cast in a beta male supporting role in Rebel Moon.

Dany is honestly my favorite of them all. She is a dreamer; however, she’s also pragmatic and a realist. She has known pain as she’s known joy. But past her queenly status, her army, and her dragons, she is just a girl. Although she is matured beyond her years in the sense of that she’s only supposed to be 16 I believe, her true age often shows through in her impulsive actions. I love this about her because it serves to remind that she’s still just a young girl and one that was forced to grow up way too fast. The girl is utterly governed by her heart. But it is her heart that inspires others’ confidence in her and their will to follow her in the first place. But truthfully, I really do just love ALL the women of GOT and the varying forms of strength that they embody.

Right now she has the same vibe where she hasn’t done anything really (I don’t wanna spoil the future lol) plus the true reason I think they like Tywin and hate Cersei is because Cersei directly caused Ned’s death and has been directly hateful to some of their favorite characters, Tywin has only been hateful to Tyrion and has otherwise praised characters like Robb. For the record, Francis (Ed Skrein) was portrayed like the book character but toned down quite a bit. He’s supposed to be very flamboyant but very good looking and with a lot of rizz. In the books his outfit is very colorful and he died his hair/beard blue. So the clean shaven, long hair of Francis was a toned down but still flamboyant looking in its own way. When they recast actors, they chose not to try to mimic the previous actor so they just went with a different look. The new actor is okay but he looks like Jaime and he definitely pales in comparison to Francis and his casual look is definitely is much further away from the look of book Dario than Francis, who kept the spirit of the books. Plus the actor Ed Skrein has way more charisma than the new actor.

I've watched this show a few times now, although I haven't fully rewatched it in a few years. The last time I did I was like 19... Now I'm older, and I see subtlties in these characters I never really appreicated before. I never fully appreciated Sansa's character. She was less dramatic, she had less victory moments, but man she is the character I'm drawn to most in this rewatch. I was her age when I really watched the show, but now I'm old enough that on these rewatches I see her as a child, and her character arc is completely different to me now. The depth behind her eyes when she looks at other characters is different now. She's by far the most underrated character in these first few seasons in my opinion.

Tywin is a principled man, Cersei is a traumatized woman... So the reasons they do things is different. Tywin does things to advance his family name, to improve his and his familes' standing. Cersei does things for more personal and self serving reasons. Even the way she loves her children is a self serving love. Her kids are something she is prideful of, so she holds on to them as extensions of herself, and loves them at their own expense for her personal emotional gain. Honestly I like Cersei's character. To me she is the other side of the Sansa coin. She is Sansa if she fully accepted her duties and paid the price for it. I think Tywin is written to be more respectable than Cersei. A lot of his scenes are structured in a way that leads to you thinking, "wow this guy is ruthless and wise". He's like a war commander... He's not respectable morally, but he's respectable within the realm of what he does. Cersei, with better scene structure, could have and maybe even deserved to be perceived similarly. She's smarter than even the men in the story make her out to be.

Agree with everyone. It's hard to try to explain Dany in Patreon comments. All I know is that her character (whether book, series, or a blend of the two) is still my favorite character. She is very head strong and can come off a bit rude (like Charissa explained), but overall still the GOAT.

Yeah that's what I mean, if it wasn't her BTS problems, the writers and directors messed up, and I definitely think it was more of the latter, but I've been on subs where people lose their minds if you talk about the show and bts realistically lol so I'm cautious. I didn't really say anything definitively, but I did also read that Emilia had an idea about who Dany was that clashes with trajectory (a diff story than the walking around london story). I have no idea if that tidbit is true, but if so then that's what I meant about the "vulnerability and strength". Which some actors do really struggle with portraying and is a pet peeve of mine.

Breaker of chains monologue felt quite powerful and iconic the first few times but then afterwards it’s like 😴 I feel like missandei and jorah soften her a bit and I like seeing those sides of her but majority of the time it feels like she’s just blank. This is taking into account how she grew up and what she’s had to go through. But 🤷🏽‍♀️ not for me I feel the same about jon but his friendships with the nighwatch kind of save him I feel like and he has *some* personality.

Yeah that annoyed me a lot about Dany, it's hard to but a finger on, but I think Emilia Clarke forgot how to play strength and vulnerability together, but it could also be the health issues she went through with a brain aneurysm and surgery in S2?. Maybe she's afraid to show weakness at her job as an actor in general and it's coming through to the character? But I agree, it's very one note and I think they didn't give effective stage direction for her character, but in the books her inner thoughts are portrayed heavily so you get a better idea, and that can be harder to translate on screen.

I totally agree. But jon also wasn’t sold to savages like a mare. He chose the nights watch and said the vows even after knowing what it’s about. Dany made do with her situation and fought her way to the top which is why she’s become cold. I don’t think dany needs to be opposed morally to be a better character. They just stripped her of her personality. Jon is also never “in the wrong” bc he stands by his honor. His character has just been put in better situations for development. Ppl tend to forget that dany has been wronged many times bc she naively trusted people. So now she trusts no one. When jon hardens, he’s got edge. When dany hardens, she’s gotten cold or unlikeable. Tywin is just as one sided but he’s beloved, which is why a lot of dany criticism is not genuine. So while I mostly agree I see both sides. It really just comes down to the writers. You would think such a big character like dany would’ve gotten more screen time thus far so we can connect more with her character.

Robb never had it, they never returned it to him after they used it to execute Ned (in the books, iirc in the show Ilyn Payne used his own sword). The Lannisters disrespected the Starks so much even after destroying them, it's so sad, melting down their ancestral heirloom because you've killed the "last male" of the house

My issue with dany is whenever she tries to be epic or high and mighty it is just super cringe to me. I can never take her seriously. Her only epic moment for me was the unsullied takeover and killing kraznys. With Jon snow I agree his earlier storyline (1-3) is a bit of a slow burn. The reason I love him is his storyline from now on. He is a hero and an epic one at that. That’s what interests me more than a queen taking over cities that I find have no bearing on the real plot Dany for however many seasons spends time gaining an army so that when she actually arrives at her main plot she is ready. I just don’t enjoy her plot at all because it always detracts me from what I actually want to see in Westeros.

Dany is very one sided bc the only time we see her is in leader/queen mode. Other than season 1 they haven’t given us a scene since that shows her personality or anything. It's time for a Thenn history lesson from the books. In the books, the Thenns are the most advanced of the wildlings as they can forge their own bronze weapons and armor rather than steal them like the other wildling clans. I think this is partly due to the giant valley that they live in. They speak the Old Tongue of giants and the First Men; they interact with giants much more than other wildling clans. They don't all shave their heads and ARE NOT CANNIBALS in the books; they are seen as the most "civilized" of the wildlings as they have laws and lords. In terms of cannibalism, the ice-river clans are known for this in the books, but it's not done as a fear tactic, but rather because they live in an area where food is very scarce. The showwriters basically combined some aspects of the ice-river clans into the Thenns. They sometimes merge characters/groups like this to simplify things for the audience or avoid having a much larger cast.

The one thing I love about this show (from these earlier seasons) is the development of all of the characters, and how the writing was able to move us to love and root for characters we did not like at the start in a way that make sense. Pertaining to the opening scene with Tywin, remember that the very first time Tywin was introduced in this series, he was skinning and butchering a stag. The stag is the sigil of House Baratheon. And with King Robert’s death, House Lannister was elevated above the Baratheons, who they were also fighting with through Renly and Stannis. Throwing the wolf pelt onto the fire was similar symbolism, as Tywin has symbolically defeated House Stark through engineering the Red Wedding. One thing this series does a good job of is naming the episodes with titles that have multiple meanings. This episode is a good example. Who were the two swords? You could say it was the two new Lannister swords that Tywin made out of Ice. Or you could say that they were referring to the two Stark swords highlighted in this episode, Ice and Needle. Back in Season One, Syrio Forel told Arya that girl or boy, she was a sword. So you could also say that the two swords that were the focus of the episode were Arya and the Hound, as the last lengthy segment of the episode was the fight that they dominated. Lastly, the final scene of the landscape on fire is indeed a result of the Lannisters’ soldiers and their hired henchmen. The Lannisters have been responsible for loots and pillaging the part of the country referred to as the Riverlands since Season One. Tywin literally sent the Mountain and his men out to terrorize the Riverlands after Catelyn took Tyrion captive. In one of the early scenes in the Lannister army camp Tywin gave the orders to burn the Riverlands. This was the reason that Ned sent men after the Mountain and ordered Tywin to present himself in King’s Landing while he was the Hand holding court when King Robert was hunting. You might remember the peasants who were there seeking help because their crops and lands were being destroyed. The Mountain had left them a bunch of dead rotten fish as a calling card. This was to signal that the marauders were seeking revenge on House Tully. The dead fish were poured out on the floor of the Red Keep. The men that Ned sent out to track down the Mountain eventually became the Brotherhood without Banners. King Robert and Ned were dead. But they still felt honor bound to help the Smallfolk, who were still being the victims of the Lannisters. This is why when Arya, Gendry and Hot Pie were captured and taken to Harrenhal the torturers kept asking everyone about the Brotherhood. They wanted to capture them because the Brotherhood was causing the Lannister soldiers so much trouble. But the Smallfolk were protecting the Brotherhood, who have become a sort of Robin Hood society. All the burning you saw in the landscape at the end of this episode was to illustrate how ravaged the Riverlands have become under the authority of King Joffrey’s soldiers.

Season 5 is based on the last book. There are parts they adapted poorly but there are also great parts. I think the reason people dislike it is because the fifth book is a slow burn like that season.

At the end of the episode the carnage shown is where the Mountain has been terrorizing the countryside. The Brotherhood was hunting him and the Lannisters for it. The mountain was left at Harrenhall when Tywin left. Then Robb moved into Harrenhall and the Mountain went out to harass the people in the river lands. Alister Thorne is not the Lord Commander he is only in charge until a new one can be elected The maid telling Cersei about Shae and Tyrion was crazy. Can’t wait for the next episode. Loved the reaction. ❤️ Danerys dragon snapping at her shows what Viserys said in season 1 HOTD. The belief that we control the dragons is an illusion. They had the HOTD Season 2 premiere last night in NYC it was so great to see the cast there. Only 12 more days to go. Hopefully you guys are going to incorporate Season 2 in to your watch schedule here. Really great reaction to this episode. Next episode please add subtitles.
