If you rewatch the Hughie scene at the end his mom seems to have noticed at some point he wasn't there just to say his final goodbyes. She's glancing at him weirdly and later when he gets up to go grab the coffees she's staring at the chair where Hughie put his coat, and the V is in the coat pocket.
