Before the mid-2000s, anime typically aired over six months to a year, but by around 2005, this period shortened to about three months per series. This shift was influenced by the rise of production committees, where multiple companies collaborate to fund and produce anime based on existing source material like manga, rather than original stories. Investors increasingly sought quicker returns, leading to the rise of single cour adaptations (about 12-13 episodes), which meant creators had to find ways to stuff more content into significantly less airing time. While initially driven by practical constraints, this faster pacing has now become standard in modern anime, often seen as a defining characteristic of the genre. With the abundance of short-form videos nowadays, the anime industry has also become aware of the effectiveness of shorter, dynamic content. So viewers who are used to the fast format may find it difficult to watch older anime with slower story progressions. Longer anime like Naruto have slower pacing is due to the anime trying to avoid catching up to the manga too quickly, leading to the inclusion of filler episodes to give the manga more time to progress. This problem also occurs in the latter half of One Piece and is still happening today. Nowadays, anime is broken into seasons rather than one continuous flow of episodes, giving both the animation studio and the manga more time and allowing for a higher quality product.
