.Shogun. 1x1

So it begins 😮‍💨

Sorry for the weird audio in the end, upgrading softwares

Comments

Im a bit late since I’ve only just started watching the show but just to add to your comment Japan was first introduced to guns in the 15th century thanks to the Portuguese. Although there were firearms in china beforehand they weren’t widespread, plus Japan was very inwardly focused and isolationist and so had barely any contact with mainland east Asia

Delane Gill

I know this is an old comment, but... Real japanese history is as good as a source as the book, so I don't see why a second season couldn't be well made.

Gaboxxy

"it's not my favorite tradition, killing babies" says McKay with the devious smile

Sasha

wait how do you know that they're already watching haikyuu

ruichi

"When were guns invented?" Shogun set ca 1600 Protype guns wre around in China 1000 AD. First use of fire Arms in Battle was ca 1420s. If anyone knows better please comment

Scinaps

He looks a lot like theon greyjoys dad (balon greyjoy) but it's a different actor playing the dutch captain.

Scinaps

True, rage bait at his peak

Kreis

Tbh the finale was garbage, it's ridiculous how this lead people are allowed to do such a series. Literally the worst Star Wars series so far😩 ONLY the fights been cool, that's the only thing I have to admit

Kreis

It was at the mall I worked at in LA! He was with a woman but I wasn’t the cashier checking them out sadly 😭

A (Daddy Daichi)

If Shōgun’s events feel like they’re based in historical fact, that’s because the story follows a real-life power struggle. Author James Clavell borrowed many historical figures from the seventeenth century for his 1975 novel of the same name—which greatly dramatized the story of the Tokugawa shogunate and the first Englishman to sail to Japan. Although Clavell beefed up both the story of John Blackthorne’s arrival in Japan and his influence on Tokugawa’s ascent, many of the characters and events depicted on Shōgun are inspired by real historical figures.

Muhammad Affan

A good show but you will know what peak means when u start watching Dark

Muhammad Affan

NO WAY lol that is so awesome, where was it at?

Studio Geck

Oh also fun fact I saw Richard Alpert in person a little over a year ago but I wasn’t able to say anything to him 😭 I was fangirling fr

A (Daddy Daichi)

Pretty great first episode!

A (Daddy Daichi)

I think the reason Yabushige is about to kill himself is because he's about to drown anyway so he'd rather die by the sword, which is seen as a more honorable way to go. That's just my assumption though.

Andy tee

wait when i was watching the show i thought the japanese thought english language is portuguese cause theyre the only country that reached japan, thats why they refer to blackthorn and the others as portuguese speaker, seems like the only logical explanation

Henarivan Andhika

I mean...GOT.

Spencer Wattamaniuk

Everytime you hear someone speaking English, they are speaking Portuguese with the exception of John Blackthorn speaking to his own men.

Ser_Nox

Being a native Portuguese speaker and living in a country that was colonized by Portuguese Catholics, this series has become one of my favorites.

gabifelix🇧🇷

I loved this show, but tbh, I'm kinda disappointed that they're making a second season. Season 1 covers the entire book and is pretty respectful to the source material. The popularity of the show got Max to sign off on s2 purely for money. This doesn't always turn out great...

Ser_Nox

"Naruto" 😭

Ser_Nox

Thx brody

Secretly

They've already started watching it, and Jack seems to be enjoying it a lot

James

Why haven't they confirmed rather or not they are watching Haikyuu ???

Secretly

People who think the show fell off in the end are the same unstable shonen/seinen only anime fans

RPR

Brigs, ily

Sarah Wevers

You're right, it has some good themes, I just didn't like how they went about it. The british guy is definitely supposed to be funny though lol. The foreigner comes into a different country and learn its ways trope has been done a bunch of times and better imo, like idk Avatar and The Last Samurai comes to mind, recently Dune 2. The japanese politics is a nice differential but I didn't like how they did it at all, politics can be fun, like GoT or Sucession, but I didn't like Shogun's way of handling it.

Matheus Eduardo Jezini

Love that one. And the punisher too. Jon bernthal kills that role

Shadow

Just those who are disappointed Dark lost, they will fade away hopefully

~Mercedeez Lee~

All you’re saying is facts, as someone who has read many similar stories ( novels and manga ) to Shogun. It hits on theme perfectly from start to finish. It’s a well thought out ( historic ) fictional story, it does not miss

~Mercedeez Lee~

Interesting points, thanks for sharing. This is how crazy POV can be though bc to me John was not meant to be funny at all, the full comedy relief came with the Spanish guy, but the subtle "funny" guy from the beginning was Yabushige, his whole mannerisms were amazing 👏. I still think you're looking at this as "culture shock" tv when imo it's not even about that at all. I think in part is about human interactions to the unknown, which definitely continue today. It's still the same craziness calling ppl savages from both sides and not even knowing you're being called the same. Idk what you could call that, hypocrisy doesn't sound right. And I feel the frustration comes from a lack of patience although its a different kind orrrr too much feeling where it turned you off cause you wanted to do something but of course it's tv lol, idk.

S0uL YgR

did anyone confirm if they're speaking english or not

RapidStar

Off topic but wanted to know if they've already done the netflix daredevil. I know it's kinda late for that show but think they'd be into it with a lot of action and grouded

Vik Mar

I think Shogun is the best show of 2024. Yes, even better than HOTD. It is so rich with nuance in so many ways that its easy to miss the fine detail that conveys much of the important meaning in the way characters communicate, telling more than what is obvious at first glance. There are many scenes where you may find yourself completely confused as to what actually happened because you dont know the meaning of a phrase, or a gesture, or a cultural reference in a specific context. So I recommend looking it up online whenever you find yourselves confused or if you feel like there may have been something "else" left hanging that you didnt understand completely. It will enrich your understanding and appreciation of the story, the characters, and the whole show so much. Those examples show how MUCH you can infuse a "script" without using ANY words, but just using context and implied meaning while saying so much more than words ever could. It is marvelously done in this show.

Mysterious Figure

I thought it was alright. Some cool stuff but to me it just incapsulated the poor writing and what this show could have been. Found myself getting taken out of it a lot

Shadow

I’m scared to admit I loved the finale

Bambina

Fake buzz

Brig Andrus

For real. I was getting annoyed at all the people always complaining and demanding the next episode be dropped as soon as they posted a reaction, but it feels like full time Studio Gek is just not happening anymore 😢.

Daenerys Targaryen

I thought it was interesting, especially since I’m learning a little japenese, how different the language is in this show since it’s back in the 1600s. Sounds a lot more formal and longer words. Kind of how English was way different back then also.

Nonos

It’s cool that you guys haven’t read the book or know a whole lot about the history/culture of Japan at that time. Means you guys are like a group of John Blackthornes, trying to make sense of it all along with him.

Michael H

Also, like, I know a lot of my concerns lie with the way they chose to show the culture but as I've said I've seen a lot of Japanese shit and a lot of it done better, maybe because they weren't 100% focused on the etiquette and the bureaucracy of it all, which to me, naturally, it was frustrating and a lot of times boring.

Matheus Eduardo Jezini

More Naruto and GoT and less Midgun please

Matheus Eduardo Jezini

I get all of that. I think the production was really good, some of the actors were excellent and there are a few pieces of dialogue throughout that surprised me. I just think the "culture shock" being the main thing for a while was done in a bland way. "Here's british quirky guy surprised for the 37283th time that things are different here" and I actually liked him as a comedic character, but for narrative it became way too on the nose for me, like, some characters seem straight up a caricature. I liked Mariko's character somewhat, I won't spoil anything but her suppressed anger was nicely done, but again everything else was just too frustrating for me. Some of the acting got on my nerves as well, like the girl "villain" that allies herself with the other dude in the council by the end. There's a lot to rant about and not too much to praise imo. It was a lot of -borinh things keep happening... Hey funny british guy being funny! Oh more boring things again... oh good character moment! More boring stuff then they tease you for something big and it keeps not happening, and even though it's explained and it makes sense it doesn't make for good tv.

Matheus Eduardo Jezini

SAME!!! That one line I saw was like 😱 what does it mean now!??

S0uL YgR

You should see the comments below 😮‍💨

S0uL YgR

👏👏👏

S0uL YgR

Sorry one more thing, don't think is fair to compare to GOT because like you said the culture is totally different and the overall situation of the stories is just too biased in my opinion.

S0uL YgR

Hmm, you've seen a lot of this done in a non-boring way but this one feels stiff because of the culture, so you mean seen a lot of dialogue pieces not within this culture correct? Also, I think the overly dramatic moments you refer to are not meant to hype per say, but for viewers to understand the intensity of the moment so I see/hear the music as if it was the racing heart of the character. If you know the culture is boring, not my case,so it's kinda sad because it's like diminishing the efforts of the production. I believe they're for the most part Asian and goes beyond just a series, and from what I saw it does show based on the risks of being "boring." Sorry for the rant

S0uL YgR

Cannon sayin' I look like John Blackthorne 😭I'll take it tho, bro is kinda handsome 😳

TheBookerDeWitt

Is it me or Carter’s hair grew back SO QUICK!?🤣

Sarah Wevers

It really is. To me, it’s Tom Cruise‘s best movie!

Ashley K

Also the mayor of Gotham City in The Dark Knight

Paul Durbin

That movie is sooo good

Jackson Carter

RIP Game of Thrones

leefboi

Me too 😂

Jackson Carter

Oh they got that 😂

Jackson Carter

Thank you, this is good to know!

Jackson Carter

Should just take the place of the boys

Jackson Carter

Peak

Jackson Carter

Like tell me why Tokyo Vice was better than Shogun 😭

lola

Right?!? LOL Like please stop comparing this show to GOT… it doesn’t even touch S8 I’ll tell you that much 😭💀

lola

They made several comments under their post suggesting they didn’t like the last season too much… that it fell off. So yes, they stopped due to copyright AND bc the show took a turn for the worse 😭💀

lola

In solidarity with Vikings 🤘🏽

Shay Kumar

I've literally heard no one say it fell off, if anything it get's better each episode.

Ben

Not being aggressive, you’re just stating facts

daisy

I think you missed the point I was trying to make and made a reductive, knee-jerk comment

Tom Murray

Please upload more GOT!! Love this pick though 🙌

Isabella Hayes-Hollands

Haven’t watched just yet but I’m interested to see how I’ll like this show

A (Daddy Daichi)

@Alex agree to disagree 🤝🏾

A (Daddy Daichi)

So, Blackthorn/John Williams is an English navigator, sailing for the Portugese. Every non-japanese in the show speaks English (to us). Every non-japanese except for Blackthorn and the Dutchman is likely Portugese. But Blackthorn is the only character in-show that actually identifies as an Englishman (working as/for portugese)?

Dikke lip johnny

Madness

Matheus Eduardo Jezini

I'll be with you sister

Matheus Eduardo Jezini

GoT is like 1000x times better than any of those shows

Matheus Eduardo Jezini

I love that you really like it but it's not about patience. Like someone else said if it's your first interaction with japanese culture it might be really interesting but in my case it's not. It's doing stuff I've seen a lot of and in a boring way. I love heavy dialogue when it's good, like GoT, here in Shogun because of the culture it always feels stiff, even when they're doing the poems which I'm not a big fan of. The show is just very frustrating because people want to get shit done but they can't because of the bureaucracy of the culture. It's too overly dramatic at times and I get why but sometimes it seems the author of the book just wanted to display all these things but couldn't do it in a super interesting way.

Matheus Eduardo Jezini

This show is incredible! The acting, set, cast, well done fx. I think it's one of the best recent series/seasons out there. Curious to see how they'll feel about it!

Dikke lip johnny

Thank you

I❤️movies&tvshows

can we finish GoT first please lol I'm dying over here

Brandon Kidd

Whats the upload schedule for shogun bros?

Max Demian

Lol

Max Demian

ok im gonna be aggressive, People who say this show fell off are delirious

Loyd M

Damn bro… DARK IS PEAK

Griff

YES SHOGUN WON Dark is peak as well but it’s longer so good to just get this done

Zipzzty

Hell nah

Brig Andrus

And the whole hierarchy and who holds power will be much clearer as you continue to watch. But basically, the Taiko is the de facto leader of Japan, but he died and 5 regents (someone who rules when there is no sovereign ruler) now control Japan. We saw these 5 at the council, about Toranaga getting impeached. And Yabushige is the Lord of Izu (where John’s ship is), which is in Kanto region which is controlled by Toranaga.

Enma

Please watch Vikings as well!

Roxana G.

ah okay i dont pay too much attention to the comments i just saw it in the comments for the house of the dragon episode. Looking forward to it

Fleshtotem

@Sun (sorry for the long post) Lord Yabushige wasn’t just trying to save face, he was mainly attempting to control his own fate. Rodrigues said before the storm that the “attitude” in Japan is to accept fate since it is uncontrollable and everything is connected, life and death. He thought he was going to die due to the waves crashing into him and being unable to climb out. So he pulled out his sword and was going to kill himself, trying to control his own fate while preserving his honor. He felt that the rope falling on him right before he was going to die was too convenient to be a coincidence and that his “true” fate wasn’t to die just yet. So he accepts the rope, also accepting that he has no control over his own fate/life, and embraces that his life and his death are dictated by an outside and uncontrollable force like destiny. I just wanted to add that, he was also chasing after death or rather the moment before death. So him about to kill himself could (in addition to what I previously said) be a way to control his own mortality and him accepting the rope is him surrendering, accepting, and acknowledging his own powerlessness. I might be reading too deep into this and he just accepted the rope because he wanted to live but that’s my whole interpretation of the matter.

Enma

YO! Rewatching this, shit makes so much more sense now. Things I saw my first watch that didn’t mean much have so much more meaning. This is definitely a show to watch through again 😮

Taylor Blackwell

Will you have a stroke if they don't watch Dark immediately? It's 15 episodes across 2 shows. That's like a month depending on how fast they upload

SirCatelot

To be fair, Brig had a comment that said the next episode for The Boys was coming the following day before they announced on said day that they were dropping The Boys.

Christopher

Like the geks said, the connections and everything can be a bit confusing, but everything becomes clearer as it goes on. I guess if you are going into it with know historical knowledge, it can be even more confusing. The pilot (Anjin) is English (Protestant) and speaks Portuguese (which is always being spoken when the Anjin is not talking to his men) (Catholic) and sails for the Dutch East India Trading Company. The relationship that Japan has with Portugal is clarified quite a bit in the next episode(s).

Paul Durbin

Basically the only thing about this show that is different from real history are the names.

Paul Durbin

I dont know who said this show falls off a cliff, but it just isn't true

Matthew Hunt Davies

Kinda of a spoiler: The Portuguese and Spanish had two goals: the first was to convert Japan to Christianity and the second was to ultimately conquer Japan.

Abogaymer

Democracy sucks 🥲

Guadalupe Sierpes

A little bit of historical context about the rivalry between English and Dutch against the Portuguese and Spaniards: In 1600, the world's power dynamics were very different from today: Protestant England had been forced to defend Elizabeth I's throne from Spanish invasion in 1588, with the Spanish Armada intent on reinstating Catholicism and ending English support for Dutch independence from Spain. Spain was by this time in a dynastic union with Portugal; the two countries had previously divided the oceanic domains beyond Europe with the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas. Like a vanguard of global exploration (that's why the Japanese believed Portugal and Spain were the only countries in Europe, and of course Spain and Portugal kept their discovers of new lands a secret from the rest of the European continent), Portugal discovered Japan in 1543 – and began to trade Western goods such as matchlock firearms with them while also spreading the Catholic faith via the introduction of Jesuit missionaries. This context serves as the backdrop to Blackthorne's history in Shogun.

Abogaymer

They definitely make me want to vote against Dark every time now 😩😂 but they said they were gonna watch it. So I don't understand all this yapping and crying in the comments. If you don't even like the show why are you here?

Ana

Hey Cannon and Carter Richard from LOST is Rodrigues in this show

Alex

also if that lord (blanking on name) made his mind to kill himself to save face after failing to save the spaniard why did he accept being pulled up when the second rope was thrown down?

Sun

now i wanna play Ghost of Tsushima again

corLeonis

To be clear, I wasn't trying to criticize the show. There's a lot of characters being introduced and their roles aren't entirely clear (The hiearchy/who holds more power over the other etc). Just trying to make sense of it

Sun

@MateoP So there are no people from England in the entire show? You can see how that is misleading right?

naopou

Once again, Brig cookin too much and missing out on the show answering his question haha

Paul Durbin

Because it made it easier for them to do English( Portuguese) and Japanese instead of doing 3 languages!

MateoP

Yeah you probably are because the show is written very well !

MateoP

If you don’t like this show then you probably like she hulk 🤣🤡 10/10 Finally a show that can write female characters 📈 they use their wits and training to kill! Not overpowering 10 dudes at once 😆

MateoP

Not at all! As a first time watcher myself I still can't really tell what is going on, they mention the Dutch, when they are talking to the "English" who is apparently supposed to be Portuguese so yeah... 🤷 who knows

naopou

Rodriguez CARRIED this episode imo, but still looking forward to liking this show....🥲

naopou

Yes you are the only one /s

Neil Patel

Ah yes. What I look forward to the most on Patreon…the comments…

GreetswithJudgement

It's a lot to take in since it's the first episode, but it will get clearer as the show goes on. I'm happy to try and help answer any questions you might have so far.

Enma

Am I the only one having a hard time following the plot?

Sun

Hiroyuki Sanada 🐐

Enma

i got super excited when i got notif

corLeonis

my girl

Jacob Goldsmith

they said maybe to that and tbh if they do why even have polls

Jacob Goldsmith

I won’t lie the rewatch is cooking

1999

So gutted for Dark, but anyways, 行こう!

Raul Alberto Marquez Zamora

Like I said in another comment you actually replied too 🤭 I think this show is awsome in the fact it strays away from the shallow action/drama packed series now a days. I believe they are trying to give a more detailed view on their culture, including the importance of dialogue/words, hence them making a scene to show it more clearly I guess. I understand not everyone has the patience for conversations anymore but the script is really good not becoming boring for those of us that can appreciate it. In comparison some other shows are terrible at even the basics of the interactions/conversations between characters.

S0uL YgR

S0uL YgR

Mariko my queen

Paul Durbin

🙂↕️

Shadow

They will do Chernobyl then Dark most likely. Which is a better idea

SirCatelot

this show is so good idk why people hating. obviously dark is way more plot heavy but this a whole different genre. it’s like comparing apples to oranges. they’re both great in their respective lanes. anyways for the people who watched already fuji and mariko 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

Joydan Bri’an

Jokes but they both are overhyped

Alex

Great reaction I'm happy you guys enjoyed it so far. Can't wait for the next episode. And I love History too it's amazing

Ana

Shogun is historical fiction, and some of the events and characters are loosely based on actual events, or on real people that existed.

James

You really against me huh

A (Daddy Daichi)

the title of the first episode “Anjin” is sick since it means “Pilot” (pilot episode and also blackthorne the pilot who they refer to as anjin)

nans

Hiroyuki Sanada is one of the legends. Hope you guys consider adding The Last Samurai to your list of movies to react to if you haven’t already seen it. It stars Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe, and our Toranaga-sama. Really good movie! 👍🏻👍🏻

Ashley K

Excited for this. Them speaking Japanese remind me of Naruto Lol

Muhammad Affan

I definitely got a Black Sails vibe, mainly from the Anjin, but that quickly changed as the episodes went on. His performance and the setting and all the Japanese performances quickly validated the series imo

Paul Durbin

Also, Vikings is just nuts. It’s GoT with Vikings and no high fantasy elements like killer shadows and dragons. If that ‘GoT but XYZ’ formula is what you’re after, that is a good recommendation and also Black Sails—GoT but with pirates

Tom Murray

this show feels more like black sails than game of thrones in my opinion

Zechree

Some explanations: When you hear English spoken in this show, it’s Portuguese. It’s English for the show’s sake and for the audience. Do some refreshing on Protestant and Catholic histories and relations by the time 1600, this show’s setting, comes. The show assumes there’s an informed knowledge. Particularly how the Pope got involved in the age of exploration. To put a GoT angle onto it, think of the 5 regents as warlord kings of 5 kingdom’s that make up the ‘realm’ that co-rule until the heir comes of age. The fiefs would be like the states inside these kingdoms, each governed by ‘banner men’ that are ultimately expected to be loyal to the province/liege they are in and its warlord. Yobushige is one of those banner men for Toranaga. Samurai are not just warriors. They are experienced and profound in many non-combat aspects of the culture, including poetry The terms Shogun and Taiko are functionally the same in most ways. They are both single rulers similar to an emperor, and achieved that station through unifying the realm via military force. But shogun is more like a dirty word because of its history. I am not an expert on feudal Japanese history, so I’m very much open to someone correcting that

Tom Murray

Don’t worry, it’s lots of info in the first ep, but you’ll hear it repeated and get used to faces/names. And you’re right, when we hear English between John and a non-english person(rodrigues, the spy), it’s them speaking Portuguese.

Elle B.

Brigg generally values action more than the other members, as evidenced by his reactions, particularly for Vinland Saga Season 2. Therefore, I would take his opinion with a grain of salt.

Onizuka

Shogun is a truly sensational show. It's one of the few shows that give me a vibe similar to watching Game of Thrones. Don't let the negative commenters confuse you... I don't think they've even seen this show.

arcv

Let's go!! I really enjoyed this show. I forgot how good it looks, location/set design/costuming are all on point.

alee

Didnt they drop it because of copyright? I'm going to assume they really just didn't want to watch it because they would have figured something out

Jesse Gutierrez

Rage bait aint gonna work lil bro

Jesse Gutierrez

Like boring, the good parts are too scattered and smushed between uneventful long ass episodes

Matheus Eduardo Jezini

Excited to check this show out with yall! Thanks fellas💛

Wells Jaha

So interested to see what your thoughts are on this apparently hate it or love it show 👀 Just finished it last night and right back to the start with you.

S0uL YgR

But that's sorta the point, to show the details of their culture and not just the usual stuff most already know. Definitely not for everyone but it definitely deserves respect at least for the risk of being a dialogue series instead of shallow action and drama.

S0uL YgR

Sad. From the interviews I've seen there's more to it than just making another show to go viral and make money. But cool if it's not your type.

S0uL YgR

You better not be talking about the Friends I think you're talking about 😱

S0uL YgR

What do you mean dead?

S0uL YgR

People crashing out over 10 episodes…

YESSSS i need a palate cleanse 🙏

If I say it then they'd say it's spoilers

you didn't say anything constructive

Legendarygamer

They're just mad their show didn't win. Same negative crap per usual

Shogun is good & well acted. It'll probs be good for youtube since it was released this year. Hope you watch Dark next, since its pretty unique compared to anything live action watched so far. Either way hope ppl can sit back & enjoy the reactions.

For sure. Only 10 eps and Hiroyuki Sanada is the goat Japanese actor. It’s a fun watch you just gotta be dialed because theirs so many names and relationships and houses kinda like GOT. Except it’s in Japanese so it’s a little harder to internalize lol

Mitch

I know I was waiting up for the Tuesday night drop. Praying this show isn’t going to bump GOT off the 2 a week schedule. We already went from 3 GOT a week to only two.

Shogun is good but a slow burn. Hopefully Vikings is next.

They just build up like something major is about to happen and very little does. Half of the show is just culture shock, if you are not new to Japanese culture it's just routine.

PS

U watch the finale today?😂

Shadow

oh god no

kai

We watching The Acolyte next? (I’m kidding)
