2024-08-02 03:04:04 +0000 UTCMy eardrums got shattered with the Ingles argument 🤣 this is my husband and I arguing all the time. All Carter is saying is what he USE TO THINK, and ya'll were just fighting him on what his poor brain understood BEFORE you guys set him straight. He can't change what he initially thought and that's all he was trying to explain, how HE understood it, not that he was correct 🙃 this is the importance of listening and comprehension skills kids, stay in school 🙂↔️

2024-07-23 06:03:58 +0000 UTCCarter is saying there’s no reason to use the word “ingles” if he was speaking Portuguese or Spanish the subtitle would say “English” so his logic makes sense.

2024-07-21 21:14:31 +0000 UTCThis show takes place before/ at the start of the Edo era in Japan, so before the Shogunate, before the Empire. Also it's based off of a book so not specifically historically accurate if hardly at all. They weren't going to make a season 2 at first because season 1 ends at the end of the book, but due to popular demand they're continuing it. Personally I really enjoyed the show, but in my opinion the reason it fell off is because the end is very anti-climactic. For a non-spoiler reference, think Game of Thrones season 2 where they didn't show any major battles due budgetary constraints.

2024-07-21 06:29:27 +0000 UTCRegarding Toranaga talking to the Catholic Priest about the Portuguese bases, I see why you guys didn't initially like that cause it does seem like a very quick and hasty thing to reveal, but remember that Toranaga is still working to undermine the unity of the council. He knows of course that the Portuguese talk with the Christian regents, and now they have even more cause to object to Blackthorne's presence knowing that Toranaga, or any Japanese really, is willing to listen to him. We see this developing in the very next scene and with the following assassination attempt which Toranaga is able to show was indeed meant for Blackthorne.

2024-07-21 01:58:02 +0000 UTCLord of the Sus @Brig doing his thing here too. Also he totally missed an important fact because he was too busy mucking about with the Gek who didn't know Ingles, means Spanish in English.

2024-07-21 01:17:00 +0000 UTCIt's actually kind of funny how they zeroed in on Ishido having this hairstyle, because for Ishido it ironically sort of works against him with regard to distinguishing his status. This is because Ishido, while a regent, actualy comes from peasant beginnings and is also strongly regarded as being mostly a bureaucrat over anything else. See scene of Ishido stamping his papers, bald head and all. So for Ishido specifically the hair choice, while not really out of place, can come across as unnecessarily domineering. You probably notice that Toranaga on the other hand doesn't feel the need with it.

2024-07-20 21:53:50 +0000 UTCHere's what I found out about the hairstyle. The hairstyle is called chonmage, and they cut that way because: 1. Helmet Stability: The chonmage hairstyle helped secure the samurai's helmet during battle by shaving the top of the head and tying the remaining hair tightly. 2. Hygiene: Shaving the head made it easier to maintain cleanliness and reduce lice infestation, a significant concern in the Edo period. 3. Heat Dissipation: The hairstyle aided in dissipating heat, making samurai more comfortable in heavy armor and during hot weather. 4. Status Symbol: The chonmage symbolized the samurai's status, discipline, and adherence to bushido, reinforcing their societal position. 5. Cultural Identity: Over time, the chonmage became a distinctive marker of samurai identity, emphasizing social order and class distinctions in Japanese feudal society. Sumo wrestlers still use this hairstyle but use different versions of it. As to why some lords or high ranking people don't have this haircut, I'm not really sure. It could be a choice made by the show, or someone like Toranga is so well known that he doesn't have to cut it to show his status.

2024-07-20 16:44:26 +0000 UTCLOL the argument 😂😂😂 It’s also my understanding that they speak English in the show just for the sake of viewers and it’s actually Portuguese that the characters are speaking to each other. Rodriguez and Blackthorne could be speaking English to each other but he calls him Ingles bc he’s an English (British) not bc he’s an English speaker 😁

2024-07-20 15:14:39 +0000 UTCWaiting for you guys to finish this show so we can finally hop on the best Netflix series Dark. Shogun is amazing but Dark is next level.
Muhammad Affan
2024-07-20 15:12:43 +0000 UTCAdditional info: Toranaga is loosely based on Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa Shogun who formed the longest-lasting shogunate in Japanese history. At this point in time, because of Portuguese influence, the recent-ish warring states period and the Korean war... Japan is /very/ divided. Toranaga will use that to his favour :)

2024-07-20 15:04:27 +0000 UTCShoguns are not always necessary as the daimyo can take care of their own regions. In case of civil war, periods of instability or external war Shoguns are typically brought forth to lead japan. A Shogun takes over the title of Taiko. Shogun's must have pedigree, our boy Toranaga comes from the ancient Minowara family which makes him a potential Shogun candidate.
Paulo Santos
2024-07-20 15:03:28 +0000 UTCUpvote this please so the boys can see: - Emperor is the divine leader of Japan. They are rarely seen, they are more of a symbol than an actual leader. - Taiko is a figurehead appointed by the emperor to act on their family's behalf. - Shogun is the Commander in Chief. - Daimyo are generals (typically clan leaders). - The council of regents is made up of the leading Daimyo as a temporary solution (political stalemate) until the Taiko's son comes of age.

2024-07-20 11:28:11 +0000 UTCJust before the TV show was released, FX uploaded an introductory 6-minute-long video into the history and backstory.
