It may not be as exciting or carry the suspense of the rest of the episode, but it's just so perfect in demonstrating the way Toranaga operates. Toranaga is very intentional in what he chooses to say to Yabu because while they both can assume that the other is aware of Yabu's shinanagin's, Toranaga never reveals what position he will take regarding his trust in Yabu's loyalty. Instead Toranaga only asks questions and lets Yabu infer until Yabu has commited to a story. He knows Yabu is not going to incriminate himself, if he can he'll try to keep himself in a position where loyalty to Toranaga is still possible. So Toranaga leads Yabu on until he is essentially allowing Yabu to choose between loyalty to him and death. Even when he asks what Ishido's offer was he is guiding Yabu into the story that Toranaga can accept. Obviously none of this means Toranaga actually trusts Yabu, but it allows for Toranaga to continue using Yabu while also leaving Yabu's true loyalty unclear to Ishido.

2024-07-22 04:10:27 +0000 UTCWhenever we talk about the "odds" we're talking about betting odds, and how it works is the larger the number is in the minus, so -100 would be more likely to happen than not, but not by much. -2000 would be very likely to happen. The larger the number is after a + the less likely it is to happen. So +1000 is much LESS likely to happen than +100. So when I ask what are the odds that Mariko and John get together and Brig says its -250, thats fairly good odds, and throughout the course of the episode it kept getting larger like -1000 because it seemed like the odds of them getting together were getting better as the episode kept going. Hopefully that makes sense lol
