Ye like I said the Tanaka one is just a slightly different feel. However the Kageyama lines completely change his characterisation. Middle school Kageyama wouldn't praise Hinata, he would just be mad at himself and his team mates. That's kinda the point of his character starting point. And you can see how on episode 2 all of them were confused by the inconsistencies this created when "all of a sudden" Kageyama is saying Hinata is a bad player.

Yeah I watched first half of Blue Lock and ended up dropping it because I found it a little boring lol… I’m sure it is still really good for a lot of people, but the message being one of just solo-power and egotism with the super-dramatic battle royal setting feels a lot more lame when you’ve already read the entire Haikyuu manga and seen how profound and beautiful a sport grounded in reality and true life lessons can really be. I doubt anything in Blue Lock will EVER make me feel the way the "What will you become tomorrow" panel made me feel in Haikyuu

Cannon, there are things outside of living in literal warzones or having to fight some supernatural villains (which isn't a thing in real life) that can get people super emotional y'know. Thus there are a few who actually talk and think, about something like a sport, the way Hinata does in real world. Different people have different priorities. Some are super competitive so sports can become life or death for a bunch of them. It's a real thing lol.

If you're used to subtitles being a certain way, then the Crunchyroll ones may irritate you but they're not necessarily wrong. Like Tanaka is LITERALLY saying "I get excited/aroused/stimulated when she ignores me!" [he uses the verb "koufun-suru/興奮する" ]. If anything, from your example, the blu-ray subtitles seem to water down some of the translations imo (or make them simpler sentences). The Crunchyroll subtitles are translated more word for word, so they're a little clunky.

Rewatching this again while waiting for the next Shogun drop, Haikyuu is really such a fun and wholesome series. Besides the amazing characters and the depth the story goes into with what it’s like being an athlete, a lot of it is very relatable. The passion and drive shown through Haikyuu characters with a sport like Volleyball just makes the world in the story feel real. One of the many reasons as to why it’s my second favourite anime of all time

The subs for haikyuu on crunchy are actually good compared to many other subbed shows on crunchy. There will never be perfect translations and yes the subtitle team at crunchy use weird translations most of the time for every show but that doesn’t make Blu-ray subs automatically better bc I’ve seen crappy Blu-ray subs a lot of times as well. It is what it is guys so let’s just enjoy the fact that they are watching this 😊

Ye it's really weird to me. I've never used crunchy roll but I always assumed that the biggest western website for anime releases would use correct subtitles. Or at the very least update their subtitles to be correct once official Blu ray subs are released. It's kinda crazy to think how many people must be using crunchy roll and probably completely misunderstand some shows or have different perceptions of them because of these translations. It also definitely is worse with some shows than others but in Haikyuu and Naruto it is especially egregious(or maybe I just notice it with those shows since they are some of my favorites that I've watched multiple times), and very often when the studio Gek guys are confused about a plot point or characters motivations it is just because of bad subtitles. I personally always prefer subs as well, but if they are just completely mistranslated like this I'd recommend just switching to dub. In general Haikyuu is a good dub and can make it easier to follow the action.

These are Crunchyroll subtitles. I checked because I watched this 10 years ago with fansubs sub and they are a little different. Definitely the one that stands out the most is Tanaka's line to Kiyoko, since I don't remember him EVER implying something sexual with her... I think the english translators take a lot of liberties and sometimes the dialogs even come out of character, which is a shame. I check the subs in my mother language, and they say the exact same thing you put there as the bluray subs.

Where do they watch anime? It's again just really weird subs that often even change the context of what's happening. Same thing with Naruto and some other shows. Love the show and the reactions but it's just a shame constantly reading subs and being like "wait that's completely different from what they said in the official subs". For example: "That Guy. He scored a genuine point." vs "Our point was stolen by him!" Or: "This guy overwhelms me." vs "I could barely follow him with my eyes." Just a few examples but I think they completely change how Kageyama comes across as a character, and considering how character driven this show is it kinda matters. In the sub they are watching it's like Kageyama just wants to praise Hinata, while in the blu ray subs it's about him being frustrated with himself and his own team. Same thing kinda with Tanaka: "It turns me on when she ignores me!" vs "I love it when she ignores me!" Ye Tanaka is supposed to be a bit weird but straight up saying she turns him on changes the tone of it quite a bit. This also explains why then later on they are confused and thought Hinata was playing well, but the first episode is supposed to show that he is very bad at basically every skill except his quick reflexes and explosive jumps. Just in these 2 episodes there were already tons of these character inconsistencies. Afaik they watch sub because they want to experience the shows more authentically but if they keep watching wrong subtitles I feel like it just defeats the purpose of watching it subbed instead of dubbed.

At first, I also didnt get why Haikyuu was popular like that. I was skeptical, like cmon, how can a sports anime be good? I would rather watch real life sports instead. But boy was I wrong. The slice of life makes the series very relatable. Even more so in the future when it gets into depth about volleyball and each persons experience with a sport. I get why Cannon thinks "Its just volleyball", but its not, this is more than just a sport. All these predictions are funny as hell when you are a Haikyuu fan. I felt the same before I started watching it too (+ I'm not even into sports), but I fell in love with it once I finally gave it a chance. I'm pretty sure a lot of people think that Haikyuu will be repetitive/boring because they know it as "an anime about volleyball" (and like, yeah, it is 🤣). But if volleyball was all the anime is about, it would be essentially the same as watching a series of animated volleyball championships (which was sort of my original impression of the show), and that certainly wouldn’t make for an interesting anime. But the other main thing about Haikyuu is that it has a really interesting cast of characters with relatable/realistic struggles, and the show does a fantastic job of tying those into each character’s journey/goals. Sure, we want our main team to win the matches, but the thing we end up cheering the most for is character development/overcoming personal hurdles lol Btw, if you think the animation was good for these first two episodes, you’re gonna REALLY like it when they start having official matches - I’m pretty sure that’s where all their budget goes lol The OST is amazing too.

So a few things... -High school is 3 years in Japan -This is a Shonen so it does have a lot of dramatic dialogs lol -Most famous sport in Japan is baseball (and Sumo), men volleyball was in slope so the author of this manga (Furudate) wrote this with the hope of inspire boys to start playing again (and boy he did, Japan's national volleyball team is currently top 2 at Olympics) -In sports clubs there are managers which are students that don't play but are an aid to the team, keeping stats and doing miscellaneous works, that is that girl's role. -Hinata in this case is a last name, in Naruto's case is used as a first name -Haikyuu ran from 2012 to 2020 in the Shonen Jump. -The Voice actor cast in the show is insane, some of them actually became famous for their role in this anime. I was hoping you recognize Rengoku's VA here but oh well... I know you guys will trust the process and we all will be here just screaming when the matches happen lol

what you said about "Fallen champions" is true, but the subs on "The Crows that can't fly" is actually correct, Daichi said 飛べない烏 which means "The Crows that can't fly" like mentioned, yes it is translated to "Flightless crows/birds" sometimes but it is not that away from the meaning when it comes to using it in a figurative sense + all of anime subs are off when it comes to certain lines, however I notice when it is an important quote or line that affect the story, they do not fk up the translation which is the most important thing ofc

Volleyball was popular in Japan, but only Women's Volleyball. Male Volleyball was in a big decline until Haikyu! came out. It literally saved the Male Volleyball scene in Japan, where their National Team is now top 5 and just won a silver medal like a month ago, their first in history. And other countries are big fans too, a lot of them even have characters from Haikyu! as mascots. Haikyu! openings and OSTs are played regularly at volleyball matches too. It had the same effect on me as well. I hated volleyball until I saw Haikyu!. I watched it in my first year of highschool and I have been playing volleyball weekly for 8 years now.

I don't know what streaming service you guys are using but the translations are a bit off. For example, when Daichi tells them what they are called by rival teams, it is actually: 'Fallen champions" and "Flightless crows", not what is said there. Not that it is bad or breaks the story, just hope they don't change some of the iconic quotes of the show. And while the anime takes a while to get rolling(I loved it from the start but I know it is a bit slow), when it gets going it just doesn't stop. As for the music, it has an amazing soundtrack, especially during hype scenes. The composer is Yuki Hayashi, he does the music for My Hero Academia and the soundtrack for that anime is one of the best ever. The guy just does not miss. Kageyama's VA is one of the upper 5 clones in Demon Slayer s3. But you will know him as Genos from One Punch Man. And his most iconic role apart from Kageyama is as Tenya Iida, from My Hero Academia, with which Haikyu! shares a lot of voice actors. Oh and for the end, the studio that makes Haikyu! is Production I.G. which also made Kaiju no.8.

Basketball is almost never on the main broadcast TV, but volleyball is, when the VB World Cup or Asia Cup is held.
