I thought maybe as sports guys you guys would get the little nuance in this show about practice and wanting to be better. I understand the pacing is a little weird, but its practice lol. Also if they just went straight into intense volleyball, you guys wouldn't understand the characters at all. SnK is nothing like Haikyuu. I get what they mean, they've watched shows of life and death with extremely high stakes and now they're watching kids play volleyball and act like their life depends on it, it's jarring. I like Haikyuu, but I know it can be overly dramatic and trying too hard to be funny which can put people off but eventually the friendships and the matches and the peaks are worth it, anyone who ever plays sports can relate to a lot of stuff.

This was my second sports anime. It starts VERY slow. It took A LOT for me to get into it but once I did it SLAPS. That’s coming from someone who used to watch STRICTLY action anime. Take it from experience. It gets better. The characters start to feel like family and they KILL IT

Just a couple things: I can see how you guys find this part of the show slow, it kinda is. However, you must understand (and I think yall do), that they can't just introduce 8 characters/the whole team all at once and throw them into intense games when we haven't established them or their relationships yet. They need to introduce them a bit at a time and show how they start to learn to work together. It does have those shonen moments with flashbacks and thinking/talking during the battle, but the official matches lose that quite a bit. You'll have to look at practice matches as training arcs and official matches as real fights. Haikyu is incredibly character driven, it is quite literally the heart of the show, so developing those characters takes precedence over pacing, especially in the beginning several episodes.

My experience is, if you could make through the first 10 episodes, you would be totally hyped after this. :) It's also an epic anime like AOT, only their types are different. It hits you in a different way and is very relatable, expecially to the people, who have experience playing sports. Haikyuu is actually the top of the sport anime, in my opinion. I totally understand why you said it's slow for the first few episodes, ma family had also complained about that lol. Haikyuu just needs some time to build up the characters like every shonen anime. But if you live through the beginning, you won't regret it. Fun fact: the olympics in Paris now also played Haikyu's theme song sometimes when Japan played. As a Haikyuu fan, totally hyped!

Brig not enjoying a series ( which isn’t uncommon), doesn’t really bother me at all. Anyways we still in the early stages of Haikyuu and everyone who’s made it half way through s1 knows how much it picks up big time. Gotta let the introduction stage roll out first before we get into the thick of things. Season 4 is my favourite for many reasons, Haikyuu gets better and better each new season. Even the new movie was fantastic ( won’t say title or anything related to it due to spoilers ). They are trying something different but that’s an experience most anime watchers/fans go through. Many fans who start off with Battle Shōnen are always like this, always skeptical of different genres, especially those who dive into Shojo anime next. Same response but as they dive deeper into a genre of anime, they start to see and understand why people love it. Remember two of them were anime haters in general to begin with and look how far they’ve come

If they can get through 100+ episodes of Naruto, I’m sure they’ll do fine with Haikyuu’s 90+ episodes. Also unlike Naruto, Haikyuu doesn’t suffer from majority of the typical Shōnen tropes. Personally I enjoyed haikyuu from episode 1 and didn't think it was slow at all (this is coming from someone who's attention span has been cooked by Instagram reels) but over the years I've heard people say it was slow for them so I get where you guys are coming from. Other comments have made good points about how you're used to high frequency action so slice of life is somewhat new for you. Episode 131 of hxh wouldn't have hit so hard without all that build up, and trust me haikyuu is the same. Once you get invested in these characters the later episodes will play on your emotions like you can't imagine. I often find myself going back to watch certain episodes in season 4 just to have a good cry 😭 All 5 geks will be in karasuno jerseys by the end of this show, mark my words 🗣️

Yeah we totally understand the frustration about the pacing because the first half of s1 is like that. I've said it before and will say it again the beginning is def slow to introduce you to every character, their flaws, their advantages, their growth and the whole volleyball atmosphere,so it's alright. This is exactly it, I don’t know about others experiences but normally little matches like this WITHIN the team are just for the coaches ( since Karasuno doesn’t have a coach at the moment, this role falls on the captain and other older/more experienced players ) to get a feel of how the new players are like and where they would fit in the team. So logically there should be a lot of stopping play and communicating to work out the roles, positions and areas that need working on. Either as a set with 3 or more players to pull off certain moves and formations or a duo that works well together or an individual who can hold a space down by themselves depending on the sport. This is what helps build teamwork and trust as well, which is very crucial in team sports. Haikyuu is one of the rare few sports anime that nailed this perfectly. This is very basic knowledge for those who play sports on a competitive level and they should be able to pick up on it from these episodes on what the story is trying to get at but Haikyuu also conveyed the importance of this match in a way for those who know nothing about sports, get a vague understanding as well

I come from a long line of complainers but I don't know what it's with this show, everyone around me may be grumbling about one thing or another and I'm like yay the first "HINATA BOKE!!!". Now as it's already been mentioned Tsukishima "Tsukki" Kei is voiced by the same VA as JJK's Inumaki but if you can't tell because of his limited vocabulary consisted of only rice ball ingredients, he's also HxH's Meruem and Demon Slayer's Rui as well as the main character of every other modern romance anime you will probably never watch. Yamaguchi, you will not recognise him from anything I know Studio Gek to have watched so far but who you can recognise is Ennoshita, the black haired kid standing next to Suga. He's voiced by AOT's Porco Galliard.

But the pacing does change though. Like, that is a fact. Without spoiling, the midway point of season 1, when a match against a certain rival team is over is when the pacing changes. And I actually love that the pacing between practice and matches is so different, because that is how it works in real-life as well. And Haikyu! is the most realistic of any sports anime out there, maybe except Slam Dunk. It is the best at showcasing team atmosphere, training, mentality, dealing with losing, differences in skill, geniuses vs hard-working people etc. Blue Lock is good, but as a big football fan, it makes me angry. People just screaming, suddenly getting powerups in the middle of a game and all that is extremely annoying. I like the show for what it is, but as a sports anime it has nothing to do with how actual sports work. You can actually see how and why the players in Haikyu! evolve, how they learned new things and it is extremely rewarding seeing them go through so much training and then using that in matches. And the only matches that span more than 5 episodes are one in season 3 and one in season 4. Since you dropped it midway though season 2, you haven't seen a single match go more than 5. All matches end in 1-3 episodes, with the exception of the final match in season 1 which is 5 episodes. It is ok to not like it, I know it is not for everyone, but the things you are saying are just objectively incorrect.

I forgot to point out in my last comment but this isn’t even an official practice match, just a 3 on 3 one to see how the first years are and what skill levels they have. Like what Daichi and that said in last episode ( ep2 ), they wanna see what the first years are made of & how they’ll fit into the team. So there is going to be a lot of stopping and dialogue in between plays but it’s only these first couple of episodes. Once they get into the more serious matches against other schools and once the introductions of main cast are done, is when the talking becomes less and less on court. Just gotta give it time and let the show build up first, otherwise the story would have the typical plot holes that other shonen series suffer from

Tsukki, Hinata, Kageyama and Yamaguchi are all first years of high school. They’re 14-15 year olds, so yes Tsukki is very tall for his age. Also it does take quite a lot of practice to be able to dig ( or ‘receive’ as they say in the show ) the ball up above the setters head perfectly. Hinata is a novice, so it makes sense why he’s struggling to dig the ball. Honestly it took me a couple of months to be able to pull it off when I first started playing in high school. Also it hurt like a bitch too on my arms the first 2 or so months and took some time to get use to

gonna try my best to say my piece without spoiling anything but i’m hearing the main concern is too much context and bad pacing and i fear that never goes away. especially the pacing with the matches. i dropped haikyuu roughly halfway through season 2 because first of all i just don’t really care abt volleyball but mainly, a match can last like half a season sometimes and it was just too much for me as someone who simply just does not care about volleyball LMAO. i absolutely ADORE the characters which is why i stuck it out as long as i did and it does have some great moments like cannon was saying… all the mini flashbacks/callbacks to earlier scenes etc. are really great! but sometimes there’s too much info that’s not really necessary. if you’re looking for a straight to the point, extremely intriguing story, fun character sports anime, i’d recommend blue lock more-so than haikyuu! haikyuu to me is more something you put on in the background while ur doing chores (bc the dub isn’t bad tbh), not something you sit and discuss at length with ur buds… just my opinion! don’t get mad! That’s the great thing about shows like Haikyuu which takes character development seriously. Also there’s actually quite a few people and reactors who know, coach and play volleyball that see Hinata as a novice at volleyball ( cause that’s the point of his beginning/origin ) but straight away talk or point out how there’s so much room for him to improve and with his freakishly athletic abilities, they see potential in him. Depends what you’re really meaning by personal lives, but in a way yes! There’s plenty of slice-of-life moments intertwined with the matches. This is a super character-driven show, and the development and arcs for the characters don’t stop until the very end of the series (and manga). In fact, some the absolute best moments in the series haven’t even been animated yet, and a lot of those moments take place both in and out of matches. You get glimpses of personal moments here and there, but the majority of it is very much focused around volleyball or personal growth to do with the club. Hard to really say more without spoiling! But if your question is does this turn into a drama with more things happening outside of the court or the realm of volleyball, that’s not really the case. It’s volleyball as a medium that makes all these characters learn and grow as people.

i will say this is the first time i've seen reactors actually pick up on the fact that hinata starts off as a one trick pony that doesnt really know how to do anything. A lot of people see his fast reflexes and the fact that he can do a quick and they think he's a good volleyball player but he's really not and has a lot of growing to do. The fact that these guys saw that will make it that much more impactful when he does get better and has his moments !!

I have a tough time with this show because from up to when I dropped it, it’s literally just volleyball and nothing else. For me to engage with a sports show/movie I gotta know more about a characters personal life to actually get invested in their success. Haikyuu fans, do we get more insight into characters personal lives outside of volleyball? I dropped at like episode 14 or 15 I think.

Let it cook! Beginning episodes basically set the stage for the team itself. We learn about their personalities and what their strengths and weaknesses are. Plus, this show is really down to earth and realistic compared to action anime. It's not going to have them playing against the strongest team in the world by episode 12. It shows their training, hard work, and desire to become better. And the same goes for so many other teams and characters we get introduced to later on! To sum it up, give it a chance, and let's try not to be overly critical about a practice game that really isn't even a match, but more like a little dispute between the team. And again, it's a sports, slice of life, comedy anime. It's definitely a popular comfort show for so many people (including myself with season 2). So, take it as a show to relax to, not over-analyze. Thanks for anyone reading this far already and for listening to my yap session. But I hope they end up enjoying the watch. And if they don't end up liking it, that's okay as well, my only hope is that they aren't too critical with it when comparing it to other action or shounen!

The biggest problem with the average battle-shonen watcher is that they get numb to anything else. battle shonen is pretty much everything super dramatic and over the top with extremely exaggerated stakes like the fate of the world... Thats the problem with binging the biggest battle shonen out there as a beginner to anime. This show could use a little more good faith on you guy's part and as hard as it might be to Brigg and Mckay (this one is 150% corrupted by the battle shonen desease in my opinion. too far gone) It would do wonders to detach yourselves from the battle shonen mentality. If you judge every show is battle-shonen standards then you might as well never like anything else cause its not gonna fit. Though i know how it is. It took most of my teenage days to stop being a shonen rat and start really liking good anime instead of just battle-shonen

I’m not a fan of watching this show but I’m giving it a shot because I didn’t give AOT a shot when I first watched it. When I ended up coming back to AOT (the all time GOAT) I hated myself for the longest because there was no good reason to hate it in the first place. It’s my favorite show of all time. So I’ll watch 90 episodes of wholesome shit. Why not. Maybe I’ll like it. But don’t give up on it and if you feel you have to give up on it, watch Castlevania instead. 😂

As always, really appreciate the boys staying honest and open with their opinions 🙏 And it is true, the first few episodes of S1 are definitely slow, especially because it’s introducing all the characters, their various dynamics, strengths and weaknesses, as well as teaching the audience how volleyball works. This first part of the season really is a slow cook, but don’t worry guys! The later matches definitely have a faster pace, and the "yapping" is lessened, or at least more integrated too, to the point it would be much less noticeable. And like some of you guys were saying, the context is often important and makes those bigger moments more hype. But these first episodes are definitely slow and finding their footing, teaching the viewers the game, and showing us the first glimpses of the characters. Trust me when I say almost EVERY character is important, and all of them are being set up right now for their individual arcs. So a lot of the things each of them say are important, without you guys even realising it right now. I’ve caught so many tiny sentences in these first few eps that mean SO much when you know where the show is going… I’m super excited for you guys to see where this goes! Keep trusting the process, I appreciate you guys! 🫶

Your guys' thoughts so far are completely fair. You'll know for sure whether you like the show or not after the first season (25 episodes), but there's surprisingly a lot of groundwork that needs to be laid which is what's going on right now. It's pretty linear with its quality progression up until the start of season 4 (which is still good) I'd say It's not going to be this type of talking for the whole show, but I don't remember how long it goes on for. I'm pretty sure it stops within the first half of this season though. They'll always treat volleyball extremely seriously, so you kinda have to get onboard with that Glad you guys are giving it a shot and being open minded

these reactions are so interesting bc i feel like they’ve already kinda heard so much discourse surrounding haikyuu and it’s mostly either ppl absolutely loving it and praising it (like myself) or people doggin the shit out of it with like very little in between 😭 i feel like both can have a negative effect on y’all’s viewing experience and i’m scared because it seems like you guys like it but are like waiting for the other shoe to drop, whether it be you can’t stand it, or you fall in love with it. idk if that makes sense but to echo a comment from @paris, this show has crazy peaks but i also didn’t hate the first episodes. i’d personally say it picks up around ep 10 but it’s not that it really changes (besides getting a little faster paced) i just already loved so many of the characters and how they interacted with each other that i wanted to see them grind and i wanted to see them win. i say all this to say, i did enjoy tf out of the reaction and i’m still gonna be fiening for more 😂 i just see people talking about dropping it and while i would be heartbroken, if y’all finish season 1 and hate it then ig i wouldn’t be mad but i can’t see carter, jack, or cannon hating it by then. i’d be kinda surprised if any of the boys really hated it by then but hey, i could definitely be wrong cus again, i absolutely adore this show 😅

I don’t think anyone can call a 90 episode anime mid until they’ve at least watched the 1st season… in my opinion the first 10 eps are slow because they are introducing the characters and building up their stories. It starts to pick up after. Season 4 was absolutely goated and made me feel things I don’t usually feel when I watch anime. I hope they don’t give up on it.

I disagree, the amount of talking and flashbacks really does get less and less as the viewer gets to understand each character's motivations and understand volleyball. IMO the GEKs are just struggling because of the slow pacing and maybe some of their previous volleyball knowledge which can make the intro eps seem redundant.

Definitely let it cook! These opening episodes have a lot more dialogue to really introduce you to the team and who they are, so it makes watching them grow so much more satisfying. Straight heat and hype when the matches start up. And other than the matches that keep you on edge, this show has some of the best character development and character writing in any anime I've watched.

Tsukishima is so unlikeable 😂 I love him, he is my favorite character, nobody trash talk like him ❤️ This anime is character driven and it does take its time to introduce you the characters and show you the evolution. As you guess this match doesn't really matter, as Daichi said in ep 2 (I think) it's only to showcase the first year's abilities. Also I feel that there is a lot of negativity in the comments, like a lot of people come just to shit on the show or to give a shitty reply to another person enjoying the show. I don't know if you guys have mods here, but I'm definitely seeing people do this with only Haikyuu for some reason...

It's funny you guys keep mentioning that they keep talking mid-game, while in Naruto, every fight has someone yapping the entire fight with needless backflashes. The issue is that you guys have spent so much time watching pure action anime that offers you nothing but immediate satisfaction. Meanwhile, Haikyu slows you down and takes a more realistic approach to strangers meeting and trying to figure out how to work together. It properly introduces you to two main characters starting from ground zero together who are both now part of an actual team that wants success and wants to win just as much as they do. You actually get to see them evolve into what makes them a terrifying team instead of them already being terrifying. Trust the process and actually use this time to understand the characters on screen. So when future episodes come, you’ll actually be able to see their evolution and how far they really came.

Imma be honest this show ain’t a slow cook it’s pretty much this vibe the entire time. It’s a goated slice of life. There are hella hype moments but there’s no cool powers or insane drama. It’s just wholesome day in the life sports show. The selling point of the show is that it gets you to passionately root for the players. I’m a sports fan and I never cared so much about every single point until watching haikyuu. This shit gets me patriotic towards them HAHHAA. if you don’t feel that way by the end of the season then IMO this show ain’t for you guys 👍
