2024-09-18 22:05:42 +0000 UTCI’m so glad yall watched this series, I had no idea till I stalked the patreon out of boredom. I already knew a lot about Chernobyl going into the show but it still teaches you a lot! And mannnnn oh man did they deliver with the cinematography. Some of my favorite art pieces make an appearance in this show, having them hanging in the background is so powerful.

2024-09-16 04:32:50 +0000 UTCYep, in all my years of history classes in US we never made it to the end of the curriculum lol world wars were the farthest it'd ever go. The books did cover them though, you just had to be curious and read ahead lol not to great detail by any means.

2024-09-08 23:56:33 +0000 UTCIs it really spoiling if it's literally an historic event?

2024-09-06 02:42:37 +0000 UTC@Thomas Strunk nah, he wouldn't have been killed that quickly because of radiation, that's not how it works.

2024-09-06 02:39:19 +0000 UTCI agree with all those points, but I prefaced it with “general sense”. The average person working a corporate job in business, does not have to worry or understand what happened, the consequences, etc., to get by in life or for their job. However someone like me, who is studying electrical engineering, should understand this events impact on a more scientific level if anything, and anybody wanting to work in a STEM related field, I would say should at least know the bare minimum of what occurred here and what happened after, as it’s an event that should never be repeated again. The only point that you stated that affects the general public’s lives, is the somewhat irrational fear of a plant blowing up if you live near it. However, most people don’t understand and shouldn’t have to understand how nuclear reactors work and operate, so fearing a dangerous outcome from an unknown entity is pretty fair.

Griffin
2024-09-02 05:19:40 +0000 UTCI agree about people not knowing - absolutely nothing to be ashamed about. If you never learned or barely learned, why would you know it? But I disagree wholeheartedly that it doesn't affect modern US society. This event resulted in huge overhauls in practices and regulations for nuclear energy across the US. It's a huge reason why people in the US are still "scared" to live near nuclear power plants. It's the reason why every terror threat results in huge protections on nuclear facilities. It's a huge reason on why we had protocols on what to do when radiation reached US soil from Fukushima. And many scholars believe it had more of an impact towards the Soviet collapse and ending the Cold War than the Space Race or anything else we ever did. It also created billions in research for treatments for radiation poisoning, etc. And in scientific research, it's created entirely new areas of study. Just cause you don't see or hear about something often doesn't mean it doesn't affect you often.
Griffin
2024-09-02 05:12:36 +0000 UTCWell, they've revealed the *what* but not *how* or *why* yet
Griffin
2024-09-02 05:00:24 +0000 UTCUS History education generally cuts off after WWII, or at the very least glosses over everything after 1950. So anything after then is more likely to be known from pop culture than from school. Like I would expect people to recognize Gorbachev's name from the Kennedy Berlin wall speech clip, if anything.
Griffin
2024-09-02 04:57:03 +0000 UTCAnother crazy thing is that because of all the nuclear testing + disasters like Chernobyl, etc, there are isotopes found all over the planet that never existed on the planet before- in the air we breathe, in the food we eat, on everything we touch -- just in very tiny amounts. Scientists have used this to do some really interesting things. We can date almost anything on the planet to *before* nuclear technology and *after*. For instance, it has been used to correctly identify art forgeries, because something painted in the 1700s couldn't possibly have the isotope under the paint on the canvas or mixed in with the paint itself. Similarly, old vintage wines have been tested and verified by checking for post-nuclear isotopes. It's something no one can fake because the traces are everywhere and so small
Griffin
2024-09-02 04:55:38 +0000 UTCYeah the craziest part is some of the isotopes we've created in our nuclear testing have half lives of 10s of thousands, 100s of thousands, and even millions of years. They aren't naturally occurring, so it's something that even if humanity dies out, other intelligent life would know we were here long afterwards.
Griffin
2024-09-02 04:49:49 +0000 UTCYeah the photos of that are haunting.

2024-08-30 05:36:24 +0000 UTCAfter watching this mini series for the first time, it definitely made me reconsider having a job where radiation is a workplace hazard. ☣️😂😭Also, reading the book “Radium Girls” helped me understand how radioactive particles affect the human body (mostly ingested in that circumstance). The history of radiation usage is as horrifying as it is fascinating

2024-08-29 13:49:48 +0000 UTCThis is the translation of that announcement scene (roughly as accurate as possible) “ATTENTION ATTENTION. For the attention of the residents of Pripyat. The City Council informs you that due to the accident at Chernobyl Power Plant in the city of Pripyat the radioactive conditions in the vicinity are deteriorating. The Communist Party, its officials and the armed forces are taking necessary steps to stop it. Nevertheless, with the view to keep people as safe and healthy as possible, the children being top priority, we need to temporarily evacuate the citizens in the nearest towns of Kiev region. For these reasons, starting from 27 April 1986 2pm each apartment block will be able to have a bus at its disposal, supervised by the police and the city officials. It is highly advisable to take your documents, some vital personal belongings and a certain amount of food, just in case, with you. The senior executives of public and industrial facilities of the city have decided on the list of employees needed to stay in Pripyat to maintain these facilities in a good working order. All the houses will be guarded by the police during the evacuation period. Comrades, leaving your residences temporarily please make sure you have turned off the lights, electrical equipment and water and shut the windows. Please keep calm and orderly in the process of this short-term evacuation.”

2024-08-29 07:06:33 +0000 UTCFor around 45:00 mark; “Vnimanie” (or Vnimaniye, not really that important, just a difference in Slavic languages) means “Attention” - the speakers were saying “Attention (…) there’s been an accident at the Chernobyl NPP (…) you’ll be evacuated (…)” that’s the core of it, but also as much as I could understand. My language is similar to Russian, but still I can’t hear and understand all of it

2024-08-29 06:14:54 +0000 UTCI think it should be mentioned that death due to cancer/radiation exposure is not a certainty for many of these people in Pripyat. 2024-08-29 06:07:53 +0000 UTCI am glad you guys get to know what happened and how much of a disaster this truly was, through this show. I wasnt alive when this happened but I am from Slovakia (Czechoslovakia back then) which borders Ukraine. Slovakia got hit by the radioactive cloud as many European countries did and I can imagine how scary it must have been for everybody. Also I cant imagine what would it be like if those other 3 reactors exploded as well...

2024-08-29 05:41:21 +0000 UTCI was curious as to whether or not the pilots of the Mi-8 helicopter that crashed survived. I figured they didn't, but people have survived far worse (they did not survive). Regardless, in my search, I found a video of the helicopter crashing. It seems that in real life, this was months after the meltdown and had something to do with the building of the sarcophagus. Also, the helicopter didn't crash because of radiation (in the show or real life); its rotor blades broke after making contact with a cable. https://www.reddit.com/r/CatastrophicFailure/comments/146mbow/an_mi8_helicopter_crashing_over_the_core_of_the/

2024-08-29 05:24:29 +0000 UTCAlso reading the transcript versus seeing the show is really interesting. You get more of the subtext from the scenes. The way they describe Khomyuk in her first appearance, "There's iron in this woman" goes harddd

2024-08-29 05:11:52 +0000 UTCSo glad you guys dropped this video before I have to fly out tomorrow morning. A fact about the military general, General Vladimir Pikalov, that drove the truck to get the dosimeter reading himself. He fought in the WW2 battles of Moscow and Stalingrad, and Kursk. Before Chernobyl, he had already led numerous successful liquidation and prevention efforts in other events. He took control of the cleanup effort for Chernobyl. The first time I watched this I got chills when the 3 men who stood up to volunteer said their names out loud, because you know those are the real names of those 3 heroes. This event was a tragic disaster, but in the face of it, many many heroes were made.

I think seeing babies or pets suffer is so much because there's just no way that they can understand. 2024-08-29 04:27:25 +0000 UTCHere is an amazing fact: Aleksandr Yuvchenko (the man who cut himself holding the door to the reactor open) received what would be a lethal dose of radiation for most people. He spent an entire year in the Moscow hospital receiving constant blood and plasma transfusions. He survived until 2008, where at the age of 47 he finally succame to his leukemia. Some people are built different. He was a pretty big boi.

2024-08-29 03:40:29 +0000 UTCIdk why but moments of this show are reminding me of the movie Deep Impact. Have any of you ever seen it? Elijah Wood stars in it.

2024-08-29 03:21:05 +0000 UTCBrig, the helicopter actually hit the cable on the crane that caused it to crash. I also thought that the helicopter just stopped working on my first watch because of the radiation. This is the real life video of it which shows it better (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuNtgYtF4FI). Also, that ending scene is exactly why I've been saying in the poll posts that Chernobyl's sound design and tension building is second to none.

2024-08-29 02:49:29 +0000 UTCBrig is COOKING about the terrifying bureaucracy of the USSR, At the height of the USSR, 1 in 5 of the population were informants for the STATE, meaning children would rat on their parents, neighbours would inform on neighbours to the KGB. The NKVD would do night raids and kidnap, torture or slave labour anyone deemed minutely non-loyal to the party. They literally created a society based on fear to step out of line... This is why even the Party leaders will only repeat what is deemed Party "Truths" because no-one wanted their family or themselves to disappear overnight

2024-08-29 02:45:11 +0000 UTCCannon nuclear fusion is still far away from being solved, but very recently they managed to make the first fusion that generated more energy than was used to trigger the fusion. You will certainly hear about it if they solve fusion, as it would basically unlock unlimited energy for humanity

2024-08-29 02:41:46 +0000 UTCAfter only watching the intro, you don’t have to apologize for not knowing about the history behind the event beforehand, as there is a difference between being an idiot and being ill-informed. At least where I’m from, you only have one year of world history education, which doesn’t even cover this event usually, and if so then briefly, so I wouldn’t expect a lot of Americans to understand what happened, without going out on their own to understand the history. This isn’t American history, and this is an event that doesn’t really concern modern U.S. society in a general sense.
