The saddest part about Kuina's story is that most likely she killed herself. A Japanese guy told me (and you can actually Google it) that people used to say that someone "fell of the stairs" for sudden deaths instead of disclosing the suicide as that brings dishonor to the family... my only advice after hearing your views on og naruto is that regardless of what comments say, don't hesitate to switch to one pace if at any point you feel like the story's dragging, even if it's "too early" according to some people... one pace gets bad rep but it's mostly from people parroting what others have said and not having watched it themselves. I'd rather you do that and form your own opinions than have you lose interest in the whole series just bc of pacing issues.

It's been forever since I watched the Syrup Village arc and I know it ranks low for a lot of people but, I was surprised on re-watch to notice how well produced it was for the early episode of 90's weekly anime. There was a ton of nicely composed and story-boarded shots, a lot of care put into the backgrounds and direction of mood too. It's honestly grown on me now.

Not sure how many people catch this but in the Captain Kuro backstory flashback when he's setting up his plan to fake his death, he leaves a single navy soldier alive and then makes note of how he broke the guy's jaw. If you paid close enough attention you may have recognized this nameless man. He probably got a decent promotion for being responsible for capturing the infamous Captain Kuro though... This isn't a spoiler because it's not "revealed" later on, it's just up to you to put two and two together. Anyways it's a young Captain Morgan if you hadn't got that yet.

The Gaimon Island episode is based off the cover stories in the manga. The manga has covers that show a mini story going on with a random character we've seen to give us an update on their story basically. this was the first cover story i think. makes for good "filler" not really important to the plot, but it is canon.

Indeed, what's considered filler (in the sense I'm using the word) is somewhat open to interpretation. And there can be arcs that are 95% filler, 5% development, and everything in between. There is a lot of this kind of 'filler' One Piece, and it's up to the viewer what to do with that information - if they're completely in love with the show and enjoyed the filler parts, then they should continue to watch them. If however they aren't super into the Tom and Jerry aspect of One Piece, but tolerate it in small doses, then they probably want to skip 14 episode arcs that is all Tom and Jerry, minus development.

Btw “uso” means liar in Japanese. And Usopp is a homophone/nod for Aesop as in Aesop’s fables. Usopp tells tall tales and fables of his “adventures” to the little children and Kaya. This is a common theme that Oda does where he takes names and ideas from fairytales and childhood vibes. The Going Merry = Merry Go round, usopp’s pinnochio nose, the boy who cried wolf etc!

I knew that Zoro backstory episode would hit hard when they started talking about when they'd see Kuina in the show again 😂😂😂 I feel you Cannon, that ep was definitely the best ep for me when I watched it the first time. Trust me, there will definitely be more emotional moments like this down the line (theres more in this arc + near arcs). One piece is peak when you try to understand and feel for the characters, the show really does a good job at character building in that regard. Hope you guys stick with it, but maybe figure out a way how to manage the next 1000 episodes (cut fillers, consider switching to One pace, etc.)

Brig and McKay are being such haters and I love it! This 180 will be harder than Jackson and Carters with AoT. I mean characters not using the most deadly attack and them not dying where a normal human would are THE most common tropes in shounen. These 20 episodes have already shown a hint of why one piece is popular imo. So many characters, and so many meaningful links between them. Like Usopp's dad being with shanks, buggy and shanks knowing each other, zoro knowing these new randoms, etc. These things are small, but they add up over time to create a very immersive world. Some you'll hate, but some you will absolutely love, and when oda gets in his bag (e.g., zoro backstory), it just cooks.
