The one gripe i have with this otherwise almost perfect show ist that they don't really explain the difference between irradiation, contamination and radioactivity and chose to go for full dramatics. Just because a person was irradiated doesn't mean that they are now contagious and radioactive themself. When you got a sunburn through solar radiation, you're not going to emit solar radiation yourself and pass the sunburn along. It's basically the same with nuclear radiation. Once you are out of reach of the radiation you're good (not really, but you get the point). Cancer patients dont turn radioactive during (external) radiotherapy. The only problem occurs when there are radioactive particles (like the ash/dust from the reactor fire) on your skin, clothes, hair. When you don't wash those of and carry them around with you, you are indeed contagious and a danger to others. Even worse when you ingest those particles, because there is no way to get rid of them. Then you are radioactive yourself and also potentially contagious. I assume the firefighters did inhale radioactive dust and they were emitting some level of nuclear radiation, but the amount was probably significantly lower then the dosage Lyudmilla had already received during the time she stayed in Pripyat after the accident. And even if she got irradiated through her husband, then she still wouldn't be able to pass radiation along to others because she only received external radiation and is not radioactive herself.

@Griffin Yeah, but even in those cases of extreme exposure, it's not that radiation is contagious per se, but it's simply that there was more exposure to irradiated elements in the air, which are absorbed in the body and take a while to be ejected or fully absorbed by it. And even then, it's more about how you absorbed those element than even just the amount of radiation. . In the case of the Chernobyl incident, because the core literally exploded, it irradiated all the debris, dust and smoke in the air, making it extra dangerous as it was easily inhaled by all the people there. Those particles got lodged inside the victims bodies. Even then, though, the amount of radiation they would be transmitting to other people is minimal, it's more about the damage already done on a molecular level, which can't be stopped.

From what I understand (which is just an interest, I’m not a nuclear engineer), the “contagiousness” of radiation poisoning was somewhat overhyped in the show, as in reality once the firefighters were out of their clothes and had been washed, they weren’t a danger to those around them anymore. They were already sentenced to death, because the damage to their DNA was done, but they were no longer radioactive. The portrayal of the firefighter and his wife is one of the few gripes that people had with the show in regards to realism, as they did a really good job presenting the story as we know it otherwise

I read this under a youtube video and its actually interesting how they portrayed Dyatlov when in reality he wasnt that arrogant and bad. : The real Dyatlov tried to help others in the aftermath of the explosion. He personally went looking for Khodemchuk (quite the contrary of “fuck Khodemchuk”), and he twice ordered Toptunov to go home and later tried to send away Akimov as well, at a time when they both could have still saved themselves – they had spent most time in the control room and had not yet absorbed a fatal dose of radiation, in fact Dyatlov had received more radiation than them at that point. Which is why he became sick sooner and was carried away, while Akimov and Toptunov, still feeling well, decided that they should stay and help and went to the coolant valves, where they received their fatal dose. And the real Dyatlov never, ever tried to blame Akimov and Toptunov for what had happened. On the contrary, he even wrote Toptunov’s parents telling them that their son had fully done his duty and that the accusations that had been laid against him (Toptunov) were injust.

Honestly before she even got to the hospital in Moscow she was screwed anyway. They were in that town, she was out when the dust was falling from the fire. She went to the hospital in Chernobyl to see him and was surrounded by people burning and directly exposed. Also even if they told her it was radiation the general public at the time didn't know just how bad it was even by being near people.

ok not nearly as bad as i thought it would be based on the caption... but i enjoy watching really heavy & dark shows so i feel like i have a bit of tolerance. that said, this show is definitely heavy and the fact that it depicts an actual historical event makes it all the more affecting. this show makes me feel emotional from start of episode to finish.. not even just the overtly brutal moments. its the overall tone. soooo well done & im so glad im finally watching thanks to u guys.

Concerning building a nuclear plant underground: the problem is that you still need to let the steam out. If you didn't know, the nuclear reaction is used to boil water that turns a turbine which creates electricity. I think underground if would be difficult to let enough steam out for the powerplant to work and not let the chimney completely exposed at the same time

Interesting stuff! Usually the body “absorbs” the radioactive particles over time, with denser tissues (bones, for example) taking up the most. Prior to the Chernobyl disaster, there were cases of young girls consuming radioactive particles that would go on to die terrible deaths; one case being a girl whose spine was so eaten away that her tiny amount of body weight caused it to crush in and collapse on itself.

Fun fact: in my field of work there is a cardiac procedure designated for people who historically had a stent placed post heart-attack (basically placing scaffolding into a closing/closed artery) that has abnormally aggressive endothelialization (the body growing a type of tissue over a nonbiological object) that repeatedly keeps sealing off the heart vessel. The intervention of last resort involves placing actual radiological isotopes into the stented area in order for it to disrupt the body’s aggressive cellular growth. It requires a nuclear physicist and everything! It’s not a common procedure, however

One of the few (if not only) major inaccuracies of this show is this idea that radiation victims basically become "contagious" and spread more radiation to other people. If you were to be hit with even a huge amount of radiation, as long as you ditch your clothes and literally take a shower, you wouldn't be spreading any significant amount of radiation to others around you.

For some more insight, Gorbachave wasn't technically the leader of the Soviet Union till 1990, he was the leader of the communist party. But because the party had a complete monopoly on power within the Soviet Union the leader of the party was essentially the leader of the Soviet Union. They actually toned down some of the effects of acute radiation poisoning for this episode. There's a report from the nurses that when Akimov (the one with no face left when Khomyuk visits) tried to stand up from his hospital bed the skin from his ankles and feet "fell off the bone like socks". You're right that they should have just put them out of their misery

I haven't finished this episode yet, but i just wanted to chime in bc I think a lot of the med aspect of radiation gets a bit skewed in this show (I believe that it was probably the dominating thought at the time but it's not what we now know to be true). The patients with radiation poisoning may be somewhat radioactive but not to the extent the show leads us to believe. What is causing their symptoms is the fact that the radiation killed off ALL of their hematopoietic cells (ie: their bone marrow) so they cannot make any immune cells, any red blood cells, or any platelets. So, being in the room without protection is more dangerous to the patient and not the visitor.

The Fukushima disaster? I believe it was rated the second worse NPP disaster since Chernobyl. When my mom was a kid her sister (my aunt) and her mother (my maternal grandmother) were out walking in the rain while my grandfather (maternal) and my mother were watching the news. Suddently they interrupted the news cast to inform the people of Sweden that the rainfall was potentially carrying fall out and to get inside immediately. Apparently my grandfather had paniced and ran out to find them as quick as possible while he told my mom to go to the boiler room in the basement until he came back. As you may recall, the radiation outside of the USSR was first detected in Sweden, as it was mentioned in the show, and at the time my grandfather (maternal) was working as a nuclear securtiy engineer in Sweden, so he really understood the scope and seriousness of the situation. Fortunately, Chernobyl was solved before it proved to be world ending, when it many ways already changed the world. It was a real event for million, billions of people and we are still seeing the effects of anti-nuclear sentiment today because of fear of it re-occuring. I am excited for you guys to finish this show as it really is a masterpiece.

@Chaffi Now that you said this, I do remember one of the boys telling him something along the lines of "no, but you are argentinian", but I can't remember the context for the life of me.

@slavicandsapphic Yeah, they based that whole storyline on the actual memoir by the real Lyudmilla, and she herself believed it was contagious, so the showrunners just ran with that narrative.

I think I remember that he mentioned that he lived in Argentina for a while.

this show hit's diffrent from every other show , knowing all of this happend in real life is scary and disturbing

Had no idea he was Richard Harris' son! I love Jared's performance in Fringe. It's small, but memorable.

I just have to add that I love the actress playing the fireman's wife (jesse buckley). She has a lot of amazing indie and top roles but I fell in love with her as Marya in BBCs take on War and Peace she was sooooo good.

Petty bribery is still super common in former-soviet countries especially in the healthcare system. Because the system worked so badly everybody got into the habit of paying to get ahead and sadly that mindset has stuck around.

The thing with radiation exposure is that some people die from smaller amounts while others manage to survive incredibly high dosages, so it's not always this objective thing.

Vasily's wife (the one in hospital 6) probably wouldnt know what radiation is... The environment in USSR would not have distributed information freely, I think a lot of people would just think that they were burned and would not understand that radiation poisoning happens at the atomic level

Ooh the actor who plays Valery Legasov is not in Harry Potter, BUT he is the SON of the actor who played the original Dumbledore. Legasov is Jared Harris and Dumbledore was Richard Harris. Jared Harris is a great great actor, also love him in Mad Men and The Expanse.
