MASTERPIECE

Comments

Hate that the chernobyl comment sections “fun facts” are always what they learn from the end of the show and ruin it for the reactors they watch. insane ass behavior

slavicandsapphic

i had to rewatch this to give myself a detox of the bland dialogue in the recent GOT episode 🤣 the dialogue here is just too impeccable

Seth Aasland

I think it also points to the power of the protection they were wearing. Someone miles away is more at risk than you actually touching a contaminated source way closer, which is pretty crazy.

Zess

The prayers were answered 🥳

Delane Gill

Recently visited my grandmother whose little brother was sent to Chernobyl. He was done serving in Ukraine, and the day he came back home to Kazakhstan he was called back for “training” in Chernobyl. He was one of thousands of people who went to the roof to pick up graffite. He suffered from illness related to nerve system. He became unstable to the point of dangerously aggressive. He was told to not get married, but he still had kids. His daughter didn’t have a thumb, and his son had problems with his eyes and then became blind due to that. P.S. I know this is my 100th comment but I couldn’t keep it

Ayaulym🇰🇿

The end soundtrack Vichnaya Pamyat is such a hauntingly beautiful piece. It is a Ukranian hymn. Vichnaya Pamyat translates to "Eternal Memory". Every time I see or hear of Chernobyl, I remember this piece and get goosebumps.

SohamJ

Me too 😭

Euphemia Isobel

I cannot wait. I am literally checking every hour to see if they upload it 😭

Shikhar Srivastava

Dark prayers intensify 🙏🙏

Euphemia Isobel

I agree, please react to these!

Outside of DARK, since im DARKs biggest merchant, The Wire is just one of those 'must watch' shows if you wanna call yourself a tv show person and i think you guys would really appreciate the things about it that put it so high on every 'all time' list of tv shows, and it'd be a nice change of pace compared to the live action youve watched so far... Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House are really good and popular limited series that are slightly spookier toned than the rest. EDIT: forgot The Bear, my #1 recommendation after DARK

Frosty

Band of Brothers is about the European front of World War 2. Following the story of Easy Company of the 101st Airborne Division that dropped in behind enemy lines on the European D-Day. The Pacific on the other hand, is about the Pacific Front of World War 2. Following the story of a few different Marines as they fight against the Japanese jumping from Island to Island. Both are absolutely stellar shows, only 10 episodes for both. Though if you were to watch only one. I'd recommend Band of Brothers. But it's extremely tough to choose one over the other.

Henry Hargreeves

Oh my lord yall HAVE to react to Band of Brothers. Along with the Pacific. Both of which have Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg as Executive Producers(inspired to share these stories after working on 'Saving Private Ryan'.

Henry Hargreeves

BoB is 10 episodes. Spectacular enough to be glad you watched it, short enough to not feel like you're putting off something else. And you'll likely rewatch is once a year for years to come

Tom Murray

and I'm a picky b*tch if it can help XD

Frank Francis

Please watch DARK next. It's my favorite show. It's crazy good and well thought. It is as good as Chernobyl, if not better

Frank Francis

succession or dark next would make me cry tears of joy

Zechree

Now we need another HBO goat show SUCCESSION. Among the new ones it's def one of the BEST. It has 4 seasons with 9-10 episodes. The last season aired in 2023 and won several Emmys. It's very different from the shows you watched before so it will be exciting. P.S. my another guilty pleasure would be The Walking Dead so if you're considering it then ;)

Ayaulym🇰🇿

I haven't seen BoB, would love to, but I'd also like to suggest Mad Men again. Of course not a short series, but it's a nice mix of imaginative depiction of fictional characters and grounding sympathy towards historical events. It also has Jared Harris (Legasov)!

Lady Stoneheart (UnCat)

It's hard to miss with HBO shows

Uros Vesic

agreed

Uros Vesic

The Outsider, Season 1 of True Detective, Band of Brothers, The Pacific are all great HBO short series you guys should consider watching.

Brett

oh we got a wise guy

Brett

I genuinely think that if Dyatlov had been aware, he wouldn’t have pushed things so hard. If you look into him, he was CERTAIN this wasn’t operator error but rather something the USSR was covering up(lol). Like many others also said, he was adamant about none of the other workers being held responsible—just him. Though I’d argue that he wasn’t at fault considering he and many others held the belief that if they hit AZ-5, everything would shut down like normal. Makes me incredibly sad that this man was the one held more responsible(show wise) than say Fomin or Bruykhanov, two men I’d argue that were way more responsible for the goings on of the plant.

slavicandsapphic

I know the sopranos was low on the poll but it’s probably the best show oat imo. It’s very similar to GOT earlier seasons in terms of family drama (just in a more realistic setting). And I think Tony is the best and most well written main character of any tv-show so I would defintetly recommend checking that out at some point.

Nic_

Severance is a SOLID choice

Gilded Jackal

Band of Brothers and The Pacific was HBO's GOAT before GOT. I mean you cant go wrong with Steven Spielberg. Its the show he produced after the success of Saving Private Ryan.

Anthony Rodriguez

Tbf, neither of both spoilers are that serious as they really don't impact anything in the series story-wise. The worst one was the guy who said Khomyuk wasn't real lol, as the character did have a huge impact on the show.

Gaboxxy

Just absolute cinema. That's all that can be said

𝓓𝓪𝓷𝓪

This is heartbreaking 💔

DARK now or riot!!!!!!

Jacob Goldsmith

I also wathced the interview of Ludmyla here: https://youtu.be/aRFkmFLl4zA?si=pvKQSheqw_cXjRmn. (it has eng subtitles) She is upset with some inaccuracies. She says that "her Vasya" never screamed and was never in hysterics, that he was always calm and patient. That he was fun and never showed any weakness. Even in his last moments, he was able to gift her flowers... What a man... The more I hear about her story the more my heart breaks. She tells that she didn't understand how radiation worked and that she was sure her baby was protected. She and Vasily joked. He said "What if all of my hair will fall out?" and she would say "then we won't have to spend so much money on shampoo?". The story of how they met and everything about their relationship shows how in love and innocent they were. People from 5 different countries like Canada and USA came to help them financially/medically, but she was told beforehand by the people from governemnt to decline everything. So she did and stayed in Ukraine. She says that everyone uses and twists her story and life but she still wouldn't want to change a thing in her life. Now, much older, she undertsand that how bright and special was what she had with Vasily. Unfortunately, no one had contacted her about the series. So she had no idea right up until journalists started bombarding her apartment. Because of that she had to move to another place P.S. Vasily's mother is also still alive and this interview she shares her story. Turns out, Vasily always wnated to be a firefighter and very brave. He stood his ground and always was ready to dive into danger to save lives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4jAcVoef2A

History is rewritten, don't be surprised

Scinaps

Such a good show! Hopefully you watch Severance too 👉👈

Brianna Tsao

So I recently went into a Chernobyl rabithole and found out that Dyatlov in real life wasn't nearly as bad as portrayed in the show. By his understanding, everything was done correctly. Since AZ5 was supposed to shut down a reactor. Morover, Dyatlov actually tried to send his staff home due to fear of exposure and searched for Khodemchuk with the others. When he sent staff members to lower control rods manually, he realised his mistake and tried to call them back. Afterwards, he tried to clear Toptunov and Akimov of any accusations, he wrote a letter to Toptunov family saying the truth about their son, and that he did everything correctly. I honestly don't know where this story began about dyatlov being a super villain. He was a deputy chief engineer, an effective manager who took safety seriously and considered rules strictly. He actually made Toptunov extend his training several times before letting him become a SIUR. And when it comes to Legasov, it is actually the opposite for him. He had insisted on helicopters flying over the smoke and pouring sand and wasn't as reluctant to endanger the lives of people in real life. Generally there are a lot of misconceptions following the Chernobyl accident. Some were done with a purpose of dramatisation for TV series and some were just popualr beliefs that show creaters accidently believed.

Ayaulym🇰🇿

I really recommend "When they see us" for another short series that depicts a real story (central park 5). Also "The Terror", only 2 seasons but it's are really good and have real history elements

velemon

When did they say they're down to 2. I never saw the announcement they cut from 3 to 2 and didn't even tell us? Why?

Scinaps

Only season 1 the rest is garbage 🗑 luckily standalone seasons

Scinaps

if you'd like to watch another hbo masterpiece, try True detective. just 8 ep

Tommaso Ranaldi

I'd strongly recommend that you guys watch season 1 of "The Terror" if you're feeling up to another gutpunch of a show, has a lot of familiar faces from Chernobyl and Game of Thrones. I only say to watch season 1 as each season is a self contained story, haven't heard good things about season 2 tbh.

Samuel Mctague

I also thought of it in a way that boris knows he will die and feels he has wasted his life. He sees the caterpillar and he sees the beauty in the smaller things in front of us that we often overlook, the caterpillar is that beauty of life and he appreciates it now… and its also a continuation of life. it’s really sad and beautiful at the same time, they did such a good job with this show

Jessica

Craig mazin did an interview where he explained how they were shooting the scene between shcherbina and legasov and then a caterpillar just showed up on Skarsgårds leg (not in the script) and he thought of the idea that, after everything that happened , there’s still hope and the caterpillar represents just that- that life will continue🐛

Jessica

I think it's important to remember that something being dangerous doesn't mean guaranteed negative outcome. Like for instance the 3 divers that went into the water to turn the valves were expected to die very shortly after, but meanwhile 2 were still alive decades later. Meanwhile everyone that watched the plant fire from the bridge is dead. That doesn't mean that the water those divers were in wasn't dangerous, they just got very lucky. Biology and medicine work in the realms of correlation, causation, and probability, but few things are absolute. Life, uh... finds a way.

Nick K

the walking dead needs to be on the watch list!

Lucki

This extends to big corporations/businesses in the US as well. It doesn't even have to be to cover something up; horrible things are done purely out of self-interest. I remember reading about the Battle of Blair Mountain where miners engaged in strikes against unfair treatment/conditions and literally got bombs dropped on them. There have been innumerable atrocities committed by the CIA as well. Most Americans are ignorant of CIA-backed coups in South American countries. MKUltra is a fairly well-known one, but it's not like typical Americans can do much/anything about CIA actions lol. The PHS and CDC also conducted the awful Tuskegee Syphilis Study. The US is CURRENTLY funding genocide overseas. It's honestly baffling that we call ourselves the "land of the free" despite our incarceration rates being higher than any other country on the planet; slavery is also legal under the 13th Amendment if it's for the punishment of a crime. These are just a few things I can quickly list off the top of my head. At least I can say these things freely...

TheSauceGuy

I need a reaction to The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives

Hansen

The world is depressing. I kind of do the opposite and enjoy watching complex stories/characters that make me feel a wide range of emotions.

TheSauceGuy

Yeah, prob not one of the best areas to cheap out on. Like, nuclear workers should be able to work unimpeded by external political influences.

TheSauceGuy

Yeah, I mentioned that the suicide mission guys survived too as I'd forgotten about the epilogue lol.

TheSauceGuy

I had a history teacher who had us work on an argumentative paper on whether or not they were justified, which was interesting.

TheSauceGuy

You guys heard right: Band of Brothers is one of the best shows I have ever seen, and it was the starting point of a lot of famous actors. High budget all of which was spent well, and another show which is made on real events. You guys should react to it

C2-H5-OH

As a Libyan, the timing is quite crazy for me to have watched this ending today with you guys. Exactly one year ago, on the night of September 10, 2023, Storm Daniel in the Mediterranean brought historic rainfall and flooding to the eastern Libyan coast. The overwhelming amounts of rainfall and flooding accumulating and falling down from a valley (Wadi Derna) in the Green Mountain down towards the coast caused the collapse of two major dams leading into the the city of Derna, as the dams had been in poor condition, had cracks and had not been properly renovated since 2002 despite millions in funds allocated for that sole purpose multiple times since. “The dam collapses released an estimated 30 million cubic meters causing flooding downstream as the Wadi Derna overflowed”. Overnight, the flooding destroyed a quarter of the city and took thousands of lives with it. “The confirmed death toll is 5,923, however some estimate as many as 24,000 people died. The event was the second-deadliest dam failure in history.” When I woke up today, I was reflecting on the fact that it had been a full year with no finalized numbers of casualties and no real accountability for the negligence and corruption that caused this disaster, so watching the end of that episode was quite something for me. In Chernobyl, Derna and in all places that have suffered human-caused disasters, what is most deserving of the spotlight and remembrance are the sacrifices by the countless people involved in heroic rescue operations and efforts. Their actions and sacrifices for others are the finest example of the human spirit. RIP to all the victims and heroes.

Mustafa

This mini series gets the three E’s: Entertaining, Emotional, and Educational 👍

Safety Tina

I'm happy you guys liked the show. Good reactions and I'm glad you guys took a chance on this.

Daveeed

It certainly would've made a large portion of Europe uninhabitable for many years. Geks are probably exaggerating a bit too, but it's not an extinction-level event haha.

TheSauceGuy

Not the entire world, but if not contained it would've definitely made the entirety of Europe uninhabitable, with millions of casualties.

Gaboxxy

Yeah, for sure. Like, many (maybe even a majority) of Americans to this day believe that the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was justified. You have to wonder where these people got their information or why they formed these opinions. There are also more harmless things too, like how they changed when the helicopter crashes in this show.

TheSauceGuy

Some of the best stories are often based on true events and true events can be depressing a.f.

Scinaps

I was one that talked about the clothes in the basement and I apologize, I legit didn't remember it was gonna be covered at the end of the series.. Still, my bad.

Gaboxxy

I hate to be that guy but the music during the end montage reminds me of Dark.

Zechree

season 2 lol?

TheSauceGuy

What are your favorite scenes from the show? I think my top one would be the end of episode 2 where all you hear is breathing through the gas masks and the Geiger counter clicking. After that, I'd probably do the dialogue with the caterpillar from this episode and then the rooftop scene. It's kind of hard as there are so many amazing scenes.

TheSauceGuy

The scariest thing is when history is rewritten and the truth is lost to time Getting all your info from one source or media is a dangerous rabbit hole

Scinaps

Outside of the historical inaccuracies, I'd say it's a 9.99/10

TheSauceGuy

Carter made a good point about how media can reach a wider audience than other mediums to inform people about history. You do have to be careful of this though as there will almost always be inaccuracies that can alter people's views of events (but history books can do this too).

TheSauceGuy

As horrific as the Chernobyl disaster was, you guys seem to exaggerate it when you talk about how it could've ended the whole world. Also, Dyatlov was rude and reckless in the show, but he was unaware of the flaws of AZ-5. I think the show making it clear that he was in denial shows that he truly didn't think that AZ-5 could cause such a disaster.

TheSauceGuy

Sorry about my comment concerning the fireman's clothes. I did mean in the context of right now & today though, and not when this show was made ;) To be fair, I didn't make that clear and it's only been like 6 years since they made the show so I'll take that L. Sorry boys.

DudeTrue

So glad you guys enjoyed this. Not that much related to this show, but have you watched Dunkirk? If not, I think you guys would enjoy it as well

AnonX

The way yall have so much more premium content to get to 🔥🔥🔥 The future is bright. GEK FOR LIFE

thank u next

cant complain but now dark

Jacob Goldsmith

Aren't you glad you guys watched this despite it not winning the poll?

TheSauceGuy

Lmao, Roose is here too? How many GoT/HotD and Star Wars actors are there haha?

TheSauceGuy

Truck Cemetary 14:26

TheSauceGuy

Even if the AZ-5 problem didn't exist, Dyatlov should've known that the test was impossible to carry out because of the Xenon build up, but I guess he didn't want to say no to his superiors. It was pure incompetence from Dyatlov and Fomin.

JuancaMX

Criticizing the Soviet Union is perfectly fair as long as you can do the same for other nations that do the same or worse. Too many people are quick to criticize other nations and then ignore the faults of their own. As an American, there are obvious positives to where I live, but the US has also done and continues to do plenty of awful things both inside and outside of its borders. I feel like if I list some examples my comment might get deleted for being controversial.

TheSauceGuy

I recently found out there was a partial nuclear meltdown in Los Angeles in the 50s and it still hasn’t been cleaned up..

Michael

Should definitely get a band of brother and the pacific watch. Same HBO production team for both. Would give a great picture on both fronts of ww2. Marines fighting the japanese in the pacific, and then paratroopers fighting the germans in band of brothers.

Yerr

And just gonna add another comment highly highly recommending Band of Brothers

Schindlers list is sadly a must watch, everyone need to see and absorb the message in it :/ It is also beautifully crafted cinema.

i’m glad this channel gave me the push i needed to watch this show! it was fantastic the entire way through. and the length was just right! i would love for more shows to be created that depict historical events with this much quality and care. still v much hoping that y’all watch the interview with the vampire (amc series) someday soon 🤞

That Chernobyl quote was from CoD 4, which was my favorite CoD game by far. I never played anything past MW3 though as I didn't like the direction the series was going.

So good, gotta be one of the best historical dramas. Let's say thank you for the sacrifice Legasov, and everyone else... wow

Brittany (Ultraanimegirl4)

I think the word you are looking for is institutional memory. Most of the powerful government officials were born and lived through soviet times, and many of the institutions in post soviet countries are soviet era institutions, and as a result a lot of the same unfortunate issues still exist and are perpetuated by domestic institutions as well as the influence from russia and its sovietesque framework. (I'm looking at you cronyism, restriction of press and opposition candidates, strong secret security forces)

I've seen multiple Chernobyl reactions and there's always people in the comments that feel the need to spoil the ending slideshow with their 'fun facts'

Brady

pretty lame that the comments are spoiling stuff for them. we all pay to be here. i don't understand why people feel the need to overshare/give way too much context that will be revealed in the show. the less they know, the better the reaction. If you do end up watching Band of brothers, it might be for the best to record it all before posting, or avoid the comments in general. great series with lots of great moments. looking forward to whatever is next

Count Dooku

Thanks for watching - masterpiece for sure, watch BAND OF BROTHERS PLZ

Sean Johnson

What Cannon said at around 7:30 isn't quite correct. Once you're decontaminated (like we see in episode two, in which the soldier drives the armored truck and is hosed off afterwards), you're not giving off radiation anymore, so if you don't ingest or inhale any radioactive material, you're safe and not contaminating others anymore. What can still give off radiation is the particles you inhale if you breathe them in. That's why nobody was allowed to touch the firefighters, they had inhaled so much radioactive material that it was still contaminating others, even if they were decontaminated (externally) beforehand. Also, Legasov didn't have cancer (as far as we know). What makes your hair fall out is the radiation when you get cancer treatment, so it was probably the extended period of time he was exposed to radiation in Chernobyl that made his hair fall out.

roonil

I think there are animals who have adapted to the radiation. lots of fungus too. some fungai can feed off radiation. pretty neat stuff.

Niffol

I heard a statistic on some history video essay about russia. Since the stat has been tracked russia has been the #1 country for the longest amount of time in the stat of "Most Corrupt". lol vodka has a surprising amount of involvement in russian history too.

Niffol

Safe if they follow protocol. as long as the protocol is true, and as soon as anything goes wrong it sounds like AZ - 5 would have done something.

Niffol

Band of Brothers follows real accounts of soldiers during world war 2 who served in the airborne. Very very very good.

Niffol

There are some other good historical movies/series. Think a couple are netflix originals. YES BAND OF BROTHERS!

Niffol

truly a 10/10 show, they cooked with the dialogue 👨‍🍳. the character of boris was very special, growth between episode one and the finale is 🔥. the bench scene was peak, and another scene that sticks with me when i think about this show was the first convo boris and legasov had on the phone, while everyone else was meming/downplaying 3.6 roentgen, legasov started talking about the seriousness of the situation and possible evacuation, even tho he was quickly dismissed by boris, you could tell legasov was HIM from the go. rip brazza 🐐

kivu_king

never said it doesn’t but not every government acts on it. and i was talking specifically about soviet union and its legacy)

tanko97

If you think this mentality doesn't exist in ALL governments, you're truly naive. Everyone in power will do anything to remain in power.

Scinaps

10/10 episode and the finale to a masterpiece. Also PLEASE WATCH DARK NEXT and then we can move on to more BoB sadness

Nanashi

i’m really glad you enjoyed it guys and actually thought through a lot of moments and overall theme and tragedy of this show. as i don’t have any experience talking with Americans about this stuff, this is as close as it gets for me currently (i live in Poland now). and it gets even scarier when you know this type of national consciousness (idk how to better call it) is present nowadays just in a form of different nation. many post-soviet countries are still fighting to be free of this mentality of moral superiority that is in reality wrong and fake on all levels but it is being forced on them (putin is literally a kgb agent). so yeah, not much has changed. soviet union didn’t just disappeared in 1991, a lot of its “gears” are still running and it’s honestly scary….if this comment is too morbid i’m sorry, i just had to mention this..

tanko97

Please please please seriously consider watching the Band of Brothers trilogy/installments! It covers World War 2 and they are all great. Especially BoB. The order goes Band of Brothers (2002), The Pacific (2010), and then Masters of the Air (2024)! They are all their own miniseries.

Veterans Day is coming up Nov 11 - I would recommend: Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, and The Pacific. YouTube will eat those up.

Count Dooku

So glad u guys took on Chernobyl and gave it a chance❤️

Ashley H.N

This show is a masterpiece. The fact that some people from Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, etc didn't know this much about Chernobyl until this show illustrates how USSR's "cover up" was pretty effective. It's nice to see how people from around the world, like you guys, are getting educated through a show. I think acknowledging the horrors of history is the least we can do in memory of all those people who suffered. P.S. Cannon's hair resembles Kiba's hair from Naruto lmao

Ayaulym🇰🇿

Guys, if you love this so much have you ever watched "All the President's Men"? It's about the Richard Nixon's Watergate scandal. It's kind of in the vein of "Chernobyl"

Yeah I’m fine with waiting until they’re done with Dark. GOT will be over for them in a few weeks as well.

I +1 band of brothers for a short watch, but hopefully after Dark we have been waiting 😭

That bench scene is so good! The ending with the choir makes me emotional. Just thinking about the bravery of the people involved in solving the problem and the innocent people who died. It’s 10 eps and based on the stories of actual soldiers in WWII.

Time for the outsider (HBO) another 8-9/10 short series 📈💯 this show was amazing 9/10

MateoP

We don't see anybody giving radiation to anybody else in the show by touching them. We see people getting it by touching unwashed clothes, but nobody is actually seen suffering the effects of it from touching another person who has been washed down. They needed to kill the animals because they eat radioactive material and shit radioactive material (plants and other animals) and can migrate out of the exclusion zone and spread radioactive waste.

Agent September 🏴‍☠️

No man… you should have dropped 7x3 now and it would have save this horror of day

אור לפלר

It’s unbeatable.

Jessica

I didn't want to give any spoilers so I didn't post this on ep 4 but I can say it now! The bit in ep 4 about the baby absorbing the radiation is false. The baby died of liver and heart defects and radiation would not cause this, esp given how far along in the pregnancy she was. The real Lyudmilla Ignatenko was treated horribly after this came out and it's a real shame that they included this info AND had it come from a scientist to give it legitimacy. Outside of that one issue, this show is amazing and I'm so glad I got to watch it again with you guys!
