Kamar Taj [2008]
–Jamie Bell–
His eyes fluttered open as a pained groan escaped his lips. He felt…wrecked, basically. He had never been this hurt, in pain, and sore ever in his life.
“Ugh, what truck hit me?” The words tumbled out of his lips without any conscious thought as he then remembered after the fact that he was in Kamar Taj, and he had been injured severely.
There was a chuckle in the room as someone else replied, “Ah, yes. It was not a truck that hit you, but the fact that you tried to become the truck in the scenario.”
He turned his neck to the side, with much difficulty, and saw a very confusing looking person. His face was very youthful but his head and beard were all white, and his beard was shaped like a pointed wise elder. He also had a monocle in front of his right eye and his clothing suggested he came out of some 14th century nobility gathering painting.
“Wh–” He could barely get the words out before he began coughing, his throat completely dry. He felt the glass of water near his mouth and just let the water come in.
After two satisfying gulps, he sat upright, looking at the oddly dressed man, “Where am I? Still in Kamar Taj?”
The man, however, was focused on something else, on a floating orange diagram of some sort that pulsed and flickered rhythmically. He stayed silent, sipping on the rest of his water because he didn’t want to interrupt the man, who was presumably his doctor, and also needed some time to gather his thoughts.
He remembered….that. That horrible scene. He winced as the sound of those pieces of glass hitting the ground still haunted him. He objectively knew that the INvasion would happen in 2012, in New York, and he was nowhere near that time and place, and yet, it was all so…real.
He didn’t think he would ever be able to sleep peacefully again, and this was the first week itself. No, he could not let that happen. Previously, he thought he might get the portal to open and then close soon after, just as a way to show the world the dangers of the rest of the universe, but now?
Hell no. He was not going to risk something like that, just for an eye opening for the world, however necessary it might be. No, that could be arranged later on, with a controlled event. The Invasion, because of Loki, was anything but controlled.
“Looks like you’ve come to a decision of sorts.” He looked up to see the man, still focused on his diagram, but speaking to him.
HE nodded, “Yes.”
“Good,” The man then dispelled the dimensional energy construct, “Because you will need it. Experiencing this level of pain and then just not giving up is impressive, especially for a greenhorn.”
“What?” he asked, the single question containing dozens but he did not receive any reply. Instead, the man snapped his fingers and various knick knacks from around the room and one, even from his nose, “The Hell?!”, came flying out and deposited itself into the small satchel hung around his waist, and then he turned around, began walking out of the room.
“Hey? Hello? Who are you? Wha–”
“Congratulations on the recovery, Mr.Bell.” He freaked out and almost let out a girlish scream at the voice that came directly from his right. He slowly turned around and saw that the curvature of the room he was in before was changed. It now had an additional space to the right, along with two chairs and a table that had a kettle with steam coming out of it, presumably containing tea.
The only reason he was left with his dignity was because his throat was still dry, so the girlish scream was blocked there.
“Ahem, Ancient One, thank you but I am not fully healed yet.” He stated as he slowly turned around, taking stock of his body’s situation as the Ancient One sipped on her tea.
“But you will be, correct?” He looked at her and then nodded hesitantly, sending a small stream of CHI throughout his body and sighing in relief as the CHI began doing its work, healing his body back to its natural state.
Most of the burns on his hands, from electricity and heat were gone, and he couldn’t even feel the hole in his torso anymore, which was awesome because he did not know Kamar Taj had this level of healing. Speaking of which..
“How long was I out?” He asked her as he slowly, hesitantly sat on the chair in front of her. The Ancient One, instead of responding, set down her cup and began making tea for him, which was kind of an honor for him, plus the tea here was really good.
He might have suspected the tea to have some drugs in them if he did not know what this place really was.
“4 days.” She finally replied as she set the teacup in front of him. He robotically took the first sip as she began explaining.
“It took us 24 hours to locate Master Lu, the premier Healing expert of Kamar Taj, and also a wandering Sorcerer who travels the Nine Realms in search of more injured and interesting injuries so he can further his research into Healing Magic. Then, it took him 2 days to properly stabilise you and design the ritual necessary for your healing, because your innate healing did not seem to kick in when you were unconscious.”
“Oh.” Was all he could say to that. He had not known that. He was never really this injured before and most certainly did not spend any time sleeping before healing any injury he might have taken before. This was literally the first time these conditions happened.
“Yes, once the ritual was done, you woke up, and now, you can use your abilities to heal yourself and get back to training. You are staying, correct?” She asked and he didn’t know if it was the high from the CHI in his battered body or if he was hallucinating because of the lack of water and food, but he almost detected a hint of concern in her voice at the end. As if she was not sure if he would stay or not.
“Yes.” He nodded at the question. Like hell he was going to leave now. He needed to be strong, strong enough so that that day, that scenario never played out.
“Good.” Was all the Ancient One had to say to him before she continued sipping on her tea, keeping an eye on him. Meanwhile, he sipped on the awesome tea and focused on the steadily increasing stream of CHI in his body.
It was all rather comforting and also somewhat fassinating as he watched the slight burns on his hand that were left, something that he could feel at every movement of his hand, shrivel up and then the scars fade away as he was left with completely healed hands, as if the injuries from that day never happened.
But that day did happen, and he did see that family die.
Looking up at the Ancient One who was looking at him with the same placid look on her face, he asked the question that was burning him up from the inside.
“Was that real? Is that future destined to come to pass? Can I do anything to prevent it?”
She sighed and then set down her tea, before leaning forward, “Jamie, everything you saw that day, was a figment of your mind, something that your mind knew would be a nightmare for you. It was real, in the sense that it was a material construct. As for the future part,”
She leaned back as the tea cups and the table disappeared from in front of the, “The future is as malleable as reality itself, as you can see–” She gestured at the empty space between them, “--All I can say is that the future you dread coming and the future you wish to become reality, are both a series of steps, consequences of decisions, events. All I can do is look at possibilities, but you do not have the burden of it. You can make your own decisions, unburdened by the possibilities, so do what you want, if you think it will help. That is all the help I can provide to you.”
With those parting words, her form literally glitched out from in front of him as he was left sitting on a chair, facing the wall, no sign of a table or the other chair in front of him.
“This was going to take some getting used to.”
But before that, he needed to make a quick trip home, to see if his old Honda Civic survived the extended stay.
