Kamar Taj [2008]
–Jamie Bell–
“Fuck!” He swore as the portal’s sparks fizzled out in front of him, his hands shaking from the continuous practice he had been doing in the courtyard. Kamar Taj’s teaching pattern was….odd, to say the least.
There was no fixed syllabus, but there was a basic training course. That course was for people who wished to become Masters and he of course wanted to become a Master but more than that, he needed to Master his own powers. He had a huge head start when compared to normal people, at least he hoped he had, so he was going to focus on his powers first.
He communicated that to the Ancient One and he was suddenly no longer obligated to finish even the basic course. That meant that he would no longer be allowed to learn spells as well. The sling ring stuff was fine but using Dimensional Energy without the appropriate training would just lead to untold disasters, or so he was told.
Which is why, he was here, at 3 in the morning, a week after the disastrous run, after which he only ran around the courtyard boundaries, waving his hands in the air multiple times like an idiot.
Shaking his head, he tried again. Hands steady, breathe in and out, closed eyes and place visualised, and then slowly wave his hand in the air, with intent.
Those words right there were literally all the instructions they were going to receive about the portals, nothing more nothing else. It was odd, to hand over an instantaneous planetary transport system without a manual, only a couple of odd sentences.
His face broke out in a grin, as a small hole opened in space, the old window with the old curtains visible through the hole. “No!” His concentration broke as the small hole began closing rapidly, only moving back to its original size when he waved his hand multiple times in haste.
Before he could try and widen it or stabilise it enough for him to anchor the portal back to his house in Vancouver, a loud TING! sound reverbed in his brain, distracting him completely as the portal fizzled out.
Only this time he was not concerned about that, he was more focused on the loud sound in his mind, which only meant one thing and had not happened for years now.
He ran, to his quarters because this was not something he could do out in the open. He needed an enclosed space and if he was not hallucinating the sound, it meant that his entire understanding of his power levels was about to change.
Running past all of the other corridors, he finally arrived at the back alley of Kamar Taj, where most of the empty housing spaces are, which house temporary guests. Throwing the door open, he closed it behind him and leaned against it for a moment, taking in deep breaths, not because of the exhaustion but because of the excitement while running here.
He could still hear his heartbeats.
Taking a few steps forward, he sat on the ground cross legged and closed his eyes, diving into the UI of his powers, so to speak. He didn’t have this handy dandy thing when he was little but over the years, he built it up in his mind. Actually, it took an embarrassingly long amount of time to get it functioning properly, for what little it looked like.
It was just a little dial, with various energy types getting a small part of the circular dial. Every single energy type also had a level indicator, which was not really that helpful because he had not found a functional limit to his energy absorption. What it really did was take the amount of energy in the largest energy type and then compare the rest of the energies to that.
It was not a perfect system and he did not really rely on it but it was there.
BUT that was not the thing he was focused on right now. What he was focused on was the new container, the orange and red glowing one, that held very little, really negligible energy in it.
He was not sure if his OFA could absorb Dimensional energy or not but apparently, it did.
“Yes!” He pumped his fist after opening his eyes as he scrambled up and tried to open a portal, but this time, by using the Dimensional energy stored in OFA.
“Yes!” He cheered as the portal opened much easier this time, without any delay and no resistance, along with the current location as well, which was just a dust covered bedroom.
His cheer faded a bit as the container soon ran out of energy and the portal fizzled out of existence. It didn’t dampen his spirits too much as he tried doing it the other way this time.
It took a lot of tries, felt absolute garbage while doing the whole flowing energy thing and the portal barely opened, and yet, once he checked on his reserves, he saw a slight uptick in there, barely worth mentioning but still present.
“So, that’s how it is,” He whispered to himself as he continued working on his portal and then the Eldritch shape summons with renewed vigor.
The reason why he sucked so much at the regular Dimensional energy manipulation stuff was because his powers were interfering with the regular flow of energy, siphoning away a part of it before he could use the energy for spells, resulting in subpar performance. He was sure he could stop that with enough practice but for now? That was good enough progress for him.
Even if he failed in using traditional sorcery and could only rely on the Dimensional energy he had stored in his powers, that would be more than enough. He needed something to make a dent in the shithole this world would soon become.
Portals alone would help a ton in his endeavour. The ability to get in and out of situations, without relying on outside energy was more than good enough for him. Plus, this was just the start.
If he could take in neutral dimensional energy, then he should also be able to take in energies from different spells, spells of different Patron Gods, like Watoom or maybe Dormammu.
“Whoa, I just had chills,” he muttered to himself as he switched to the heat container and heated his body up on instinct, despite the temperature being perfect.
Good lord, how powerful was that Demon, to generate a reaction even when his name was thought of, let alone uttered.
Shaking his head, he banished the thoughts of the supremely powerful foe that even the best of humanity had trouble dealing with, let alone him, who was barely getting started. He needed to start small, not try to chase after Sorcerer Supreme level targets.
With a grin on his face, he gave up the Portal exercise because he really felt like that was not the most optimal way to absorb Dimensional Energy and sat down to meditate.
Letting Dimensional Energy flow through one’s body and getting used to the feeling was step one. Body Reinforcement was advanced stuff but because he already had experience with CHI, he could do it within minutes of finding Dimensional Energy flowing through his body.
Let’s see if he could use that same meditation to just fill up the container that was OFA.
He could already imagine himself beating the absolute shit out of HYDRA, and open portals at the right time in the right place, so that his meagre strength could have the absolute maximum impact.
“I am so going to make this work,” he muttered to himself, with an absolute shit eating grin plastered on his face. It finally felt like progress to him, and it was delicious.
